Whistler Bike Park: Fire, Ice, and Dynamite - Park Report

by WhistlerMountain BikePark

In the 80’s cult classic action sports movie “Fire Ice & Dynamite” by Willy Bogner, a millionaire fakes his death and forces all of his creditors and estranged children to partake in a multi-sport adventure race if they wish to claim his fortune. If you have not seen this cinematic piece of sporting genius you need to. The acting is terrible, the humor is kooky euro slapstick but the stunt work is incredible for the time. Essentially all of the Red Bull events you see popping up in your social media feeds can be traced back to the races in this movie.

What does this seemingly irrelevant movie review have to do with you? I’m glad you asked. The endeavors we have undertaken to get the Garbanzo and Creekside trails ready for opening this weekend have amounted to a not dissimilar adventure race with all manner of wacky snow removal tactics being deployed to get things open. We have pushed, pulled, cut, dug, tracked and stomped that snow into submission and even managed to do some good trail work to get things primed for the season opener. You can expect a few bits of trail to remain closed due to some residual snow or water damage but overall there will be a great offering of trails from top to bottom.

Your Garbanzo offering will include; Blue Velvet (with the odd section closed), In Deep, Fatcrobat, Captain Safety, Little Alder, Lower No Joke, Lower Freight Train, Duffman, No Duff, and Side Track.

Return to the Creekside will be via Dusty’s Downhill.

The race is not over yet, we still have Top of the World to get open so our tactical planning and shovel work will continue into late June and July. Now if only I can get a screenplay approved to make the sequel to “Fire Ice & Dynamite” at Whistler Blackcomb, I can already envision a cameo by Brett Tippie.

See you in the Park.

Most years Garbo opens soft, gets beat up and then dries out really rough. With 30mm of rain forecast in the days leading up to Garbo opening and trails likely already wet due to the huge volumes of snow, I would love to see a delayed opening to let the trails dry out properly and set up for the rest of the season.

Hopefully this has been taken into account with what is open. Also, no Too Tight?

At the same time, I just love sliding around on Garbo flow trails until they dry up then hit the tech because that's what the zone is best for... I don't think they could possibly please us all

Gonna keep hanging out down in Fitz this weekend I think. Greasy In Deep/Captain Safety scares me and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

@mudmandhbrazil: A business cares about money? Shame the devil. What about your feelings?

people from Bikepark say they are using many tactics to melt the snow showing not respect to the environment. On the comments I see 2 persons saying that they wanted a late opening for the trail don't be destroyed when riders ride it on mud and snow due to a soon opening. So looks like Bikepark just want to open as soon as they want to get money and not when the weather permits.

@mudmandhbrazil: I'm not sure if this news to you but Whistler is a business that is trying to make money. If they thought opening early would ruin the trails they wouldn't do it because they would make no more money from those trails. Why don't we let the people that own and profit from those trails make a decision about when they think its ok to open.

Will be checking them out in a couple of days. First time for Whistler, thinking about renting a V10 from Evolution, and a Bronson for a few days (want to buy a Bronson so makes up for a good test ride). Anybody got some good tips for a first time visit? Will be there around the 20th-25th of June.

Tips on what bikes, beer, hotels, secret stashes?

I work at Evolution! We would love to give you some insights as too sweet trails to ride and fun things to do! Our V10s are sick as well!

don' buy lunch at the base of the lift, take the extra walk to find cheaper food.
For example bike and bean charges $4 for a small powerade, if you walk to the grocery store tou could get 2 for that price.

@Bomadics @ParkerLikesToBike : Sweet, thanks for the info. I need to find other things to do to keep the girlfriend happy. Any after-ride or off-ride days to fill up with things to do? Yeah I know something but that's being Captain Obvious...

@Dennisvdb: If your non-riding girlfriend is supporting your riding, spend the money for the two of you to go to the Scandinave spa. You won't regret it.

For non-bike things, various breathtaking hikes around, sightseeing up the lifts & peak to peak, zip trek, rafting, atv, climbing, list goes on...

@Dennisvdb: no shortage of lakes to check out either

@kevin267: One does not simply go to Whistler for non-bike things.

Went there for the first time last fall for a week for our honeymoon. Crank It Up, Crank It Up More, Del Boca Vista were some of our favorite trails. There's a pretty good little pizza place in the village that sold cheap slices. Can't remember the name, kind of tucked behind a patio. Ice cream at Cows... do that. We rented bikes from Arbutus Routes, great shop. Whistler is pretty damn amazing!

Ride as much as you can! I'll be there at the same time. I'm curious about the Bronson too but I think I may rent a GT Sanction for a day and give my dh bike a rest.

@ParkerLikesToBike: We already drove to Manning Park, Banff, Jasper, Louise and Moraine, Wells Gray... Enough with the lakes already haha.

@Dennisvdb: Think about the Superfly tree top adventure course as an alternative to biking that gets the adrenaline flowing.

@Boardlife69: actually there's a shit ton of people who does

Brandywine falls are right south to the village, 5 min walk from the highway, and they are stunning. If you're a highballer there's a famous train gap a few km north, heading to Pemberton, If not, deserves a visit just to see how fucking insane some people are. Howesound brewpub in Squamish for craft beer lovers. About secret stashes... well, they're secret, good luck
