As a disclaimer: I didn't write the title of this article, I never once said these were 'downhill trails'.

Thanks for the share anyway PinkBike!

@will-Greenfield. Great vid. The trail did go down, and on a DJ, you handled it well. Would like to see more Hardtail video's.
What size bar you running?
  • 10 0
@omegalung: Thank you! Bar width is 750mm and 38mm rise!

You did say downhill, and tracks. Nice video though. It looks like a great place to ride.

Would have been more fun watching you ride those trails today as would be an other story riding in the wet?

 @Will-Greenfield:
That's Nuts ! Not been there for a while, it looks a lot smoother since B1ke took it over.

Reloaded the page, the title has improved Smile .
  • 3 0
@vinay: Not sure that is an improvement, DH trails are any trails going down hill any way!

What's a dirt jump bike?.....oh yeah they were cool affordable multipurpose bikes (street, trail, park... looking at you Giant) you could 4x race as well. They also had those 'crazy' 26" wheels my grandpa told me about before the Great Reaming by the bike industry to push other wheel sizes and make them nearly obsolete.

No but you did write the clickbait title of the youtube video though. That's kind of what that page is all about though so *shrugs*.

I mean, all of that looked like real smooth trails.

It should start with a sentence “do you really need a 160 fork on your hardtail”. Just came back from the woods where I rode a DJ. Absolute blast.

BTW to people offended by this being called downhill, well no1 clickbait titling backfires again, and nobody said anything when Caldwell Visuals made a vid with Stanton and the lad rode smooth stuff and video involved riding over 10 roots in total. Oh yeah he sent the 50to01 line, sorry BMx racers send bigger things on 20” bikes, not much credit there. But the video had Hardcore Hardtail in it so luddites and shaken elitist were ejaculating all over the place.

Sweet vid!

Been riding everything from DH, Enduro, bikepark to natural XC on DJ bikes since before @Will-Greenfield was born. always makes me happy to see youngsters riding DJ bikes. Anywhere.
Bikes are awesome!
Especially wee ones.

As someone who has ridden a DJ down trails like this with only one brake and nearly bald tires: it's harder and scarier than it looks. Sick video!

Its all very good and lovely. However, that is certainly not the most challenging of downhill tracks ive ever seen. Now if he rode down Fort William on that bike it be seriously impressive!

When I was 40, I rode a steel hardtail (jamis dragon 27.5) with a brooks saddle down the downhill course at Sea Otter and it was loads of fun! I did case the last jump but picked up my bike and sprinted across the finish line Wink

I started off on a jumper, then 650b hardtail, and now process153 29er. I would love to own all three again but thats a smooth flow trail compared to the rocks/boulders here in southern Utah where you would be walking that bike down most trails. I'm actually jealous of the trail in this video cause theres not enough flowy jump trails in st george Utah.

I agree, there isn't much you can't do on a hardtail, but this is really more of a bike park flow trail than a gnarly downhill course...

 Take it to Aston hill
  • 3 0
I used to ride Aston Hill and Rogate regularly on a hardtail a long time ago but they are definitely more fun with suspension, especially AH. Still very doable though, although my bike wasn't out of choice 20 years ago - I was just young and poor.

@tremeer023: I took both my hardtail and my full sus once just for a laugh and it was awesome fun on the hardtail but I felt battered afterwards. Wouldn’t fancy it on my dj though
  • 3 0
@tremeer023: Much the same here - I used to ride Aston Hill with a DJ hardtail with an 80mm Marzocchi fork and Magura Julies (to all intents and purposes, it might as well have been with no brakes) for years. I was too young and poor Razz Agreed that as much fun as I had back then, I wouldn't trade my current all mountain full susser for the HT on trails like those at Aston Hill as you just get battered.

For sure. I can still remember the arm pump from AH very clearly.

Rode one on the north shore for many years. Absolute blast and great in the tight jank.

Ok no let’s try that in whistler ...... let’s say goats gully not
A-line

Cool, but it says a lot about the difficulty of the trails you're on that you can get by without a front brake.

EDIT: Ooooh Pinkbike added the "downhill trail" bit. Nvm. Boo pinkbike

DJ bike to start riding downhill is normal in Portugal, its cheaper, you learn and you have lots of funn. The bikes have a nice and confortable geometry do ride downhill. 120mm to 140mm are fine to ride, even 100mm if it is a nice suspension, good tires, strong wheels and both brakes.

Video of me riding a downhill trail my friend @Rafael-barbosa DC Amstaff.

As others have said, that's a pretty smooth trail and anything more than a hardtail seems overkill. With that said I was traveling with my 160 bike and gingerly making my way down a very tight, very techy/rocky/rooty, switchbacky narrow trail with long, sheer drop offs to one side, and up comes a guy on a cyclocross bike...bouncing up and over rocks and pedaling like a beast...quickly.
At that moment I had the thought to throw my high end, long travel carbon bike off the mountain and quit riding.(I did sell that bike, after).
Ride what you want, how you want and whatever makes you feel good!

The walk-up trail was more techy than what he rode... I think I saw a few roots he walked past, and those steps to climb that hill... Title has now been changed to "bike park trails" lol
  • 3 1
I was expecting rocks and roots on the trail. Not smooth and flowy trails. Anyone could ride that. Title of the article is deceiving Frown

What? I started riding this way...I guess people call them Hardcore Hardtails now... DMR trailstar with a Z1 drop off. Worked a treat.
  • 4 2
Just because the trail goes down hill doesn't make it a DH worthy Trail wow that must be the Troy Lee adidas jersey
  • 2 1
It's been anesthetized since B1ke took over, and there are some gnarlier trails there, and it is also called a DH bike park, which is a rather loose description. But this is England and we have Hills not Mountains
  • 2 0
@pigman65: it was a lot more "natural" a couple of years ago, b1ke are very good at what they do, however they do seem to prefer jumps and flow over gnar, which is a shame in my book

Can't please all the people, all the time.

Smooth riding, good style, and fun editing, but I missed the part with the downhill trails.

I rode Hamsterley on a DJ hardtail, and 100mm forks. It was quite wet too. Good stuff!

Used to ride half nelson/psuedo tsuga on a DJ bike. Had a "normal" mtb too but riding flow trails like that on a smaller bike makes for a fun challenge.
  • 2 0
Noice. Now come to Squamish and hit the trails on a cruiser LOL etc...

No need for full suspension on flow! I had more fun on my hard tail riding flowy trails like these. I actually avoid them now that I have a 200mm DH bike. It's exhausting.

If you use premiere pro there's a few scripts to add small camera shake to appear like someone else is filming - you can also film super-wide, crop then add movement; still, awesome job !

p.s. - self-filming myself Smile

That's on the "blue" trail, it's a good fun trail though

Trails looked smooth....I'd say HT's are great fun. However my knees have a different opinion unfortunately.
