PRESS RELEASE: YT Industries

We're breaking fresh ground and dropping an all-new MTB-dosed collaboration with revered footwear giant Vans. Led by an ethos to LIVE UNCAGED, we rise above the noise and are never afraid to do things our own way. The launch of this co-branded collection cements that, drawing from both the new and shared influences Vans brings to the party for a team-up deep in street culture.

From our inception in '07, YT has had a mission – to put gravity-driven, performance products within reach of mountain bikers across the globe. With Vans, we take our next step. BMX and MTB share close ties, and the Vans x YT Industries 114 highlights that. It's built for the needs of the Vans BMX team, making it a match for heavy jump jams, bike park laps, and endless pump track sessions. Beneath its casual silhouette, it packs the VANS WAFFLECUP™ BMX outsole, POPCUSH™ cushioning, and DURACAP™ underlays to supply the support, protection, and durability progressive riders demand.

For beyond the bike, the collection includes a set of Vans x YT Industries La Costa sliders inspired by the brand's mantra. The ultimate in convenience, this slip-on is set to upgrade your downtime and features a heritage, waffle-inspired outsole and an ULTRACUSH™ LITE footbed for plush, all-day cushioning. What's a shoe launch without an edit – skate legend Steve Caballero features alongside YT Industries rider Erik Fedko and the team in this clash of worlds as they unleash this shoe to the global stage.

 I’d buy them, but I don’t ride a YT
  • 54 0
But do you drive a van?
  • 32 1
@bigtim: Only down by the river
  • 2 0
I have for sale. Problem solved.
  • 1 0
@everythingsucks: where you shot your baby?
  • 3 0
#SOLD OUT! I had a look and only tiny sizes are left in the white and black. I can't wear a lot of red, so I'm out.

Also, they are BMX 114s with a fancy colorway. I like my 114s.
  • 1 0
@enduroNZ: solid music reference, but, correct me if I’m wrong, I think @everythingsucks was talking about Chris Farley on SNL. Either was the song and the skit are both awesome!

Van's do colabs with everyone these days, so it's not biggie. I'd love them to launch a proper MTB range, I like the BMX ones for the feel, but they lack decent protection. Also too soft for proper DH & YES I have seen Kade etc riding in high top old school's, but he could ride in flip flops.

flag FuzzyL FL (Apr 25, 2024 at 9:39) (Below Threshold)
Obviously they will collaborate with absolutely everyone if they are even willing to put those questionable YT lightning bolt runes at the back of their shoes… (not surprised that the color choice is black white and red, though… - how especially a German company can be so insensitive to the symbolism they’re throwing around is beyond me - unless it’s fully intentional, of course… m.pinkbike.com/photo/26252289)
  • 6 2
@FuzzyL: dude! It’s a “neigschaut”. Especially as a German you should be aware of YTs marketing themes that this shouldn’t come at a surprise.
  • 7 0
 Oh no.....here we go again.

The new model looks like it could work well for mtb

  • 3 1
@nfontanella: For those $120 I'd rather go for 5Tens, it's been a year of use/abuse and I can tell they perform awesome with 2 serious crashes and more than a 1000 miles on them.
  • 5 0
@nfontanella: my son gets a hookup on Vans shoes and recently got the new Lewis Mills. They’re very burly and noticeably heavier than other models he’s had in the past. I know they’re BMX focused, but they seem super MTB appropriate.
  • 3 0
@Hogfly: Yep, the LewShoe is the BMX 'Peak' linked above.
  • 3 0
@drjohn: I know what their branding looks like. If they are fine with who will be buying these shoes that show two parallel lightning bolts at the back, well, then they’re probably fine with the political agenda of these people, too.

Unfortunately, many people in Germany are in that kind of symbolism, adidas was also surprised by their number 44 national jersey selling like crazy and finally took it off the market. Any brand can decide, what they want to be associated with.
  • 1 0
@FuzzyL: crazy that they have an African American brand ambassador in America since they’re supposedly so racist.
  • 1 1
@Hogfly: I’m not saying they are racist - and even if they were that would probably not mean that they would not use a black spokesperson.

What I’m saying is that their use of symbols is highly insensitive and will likely be purchased by the wrong people/for the wrong reasons. Brands like Lonsdale had to spend a lot of money on campaigns trying to get rid of that image again.
  • 1 0
I got a pair of Ride Concepts / TGR colab: functionally I really like their shoes, just enough style to stand out without looking like a clown (I have big feet) and clearance rack prices - pick three!
  • 17 1
$50 dollars for slides? That's wild
  • 16 2
Cost to manufacture is probably like $1.25
  • 14 1
But they are inspired by the brand mantra:
"live uncgd"

"Uncgd" by sensible pricing structures and a basic regard for language, apparently.
  • 1 0
@Jshemuel: and at least 1c of that goes to the person in the sweat shop making them
  • 1 0
@ROOTminus1: They’re talking about the best eggs to eat.. cage free, live
  • 9 0
I still only ride in Van's AVE pro's. Oddly, riding shoes are too stiff, too gripy, and the lack of pedal feel just never felt right to me.
  • 1 0
I agreed with you until I started destroying my metacarpals and jamming joints lol
  • 1 0
@Asuhhdude: The only time I've ever had foot pain was when wearing riding shoes, had to stop on chunky descents a couple times to rest my feet. Lol it felt like I was wearing dollar store steel toes on concrete for 10hrs
  • 9 1
Not going to lie - those white ones are slick.

So am I too assume these are made with thick / stiff MTB type soles like you'd find on Five-Tens?
  • 7 1
The bog of corporate lingo is great and all but what does it actually mean? Is the shoe stiffer? Is it as uncomfortable and un cushioned as previous shoes? I ain't tryin to wear a uncomfortable noodle of a shoe with decent grip.
  • 3 0
@ShredDoggg: Ive owned a pair of the vans BMX shoes and the ones I had were the same sole as the street ones just with a more pedal oriented tread pattern. Hopefully that isn't the case here as floppy flat pedal shoes suck.
  • 4 0
@ShredDoggg: if it’s anything like their others in this range (popcush sole and has that rubber bit on the inside of the foot arch) then - from my experience - Vans have gone from being that older flimsy noodle shoe, to this new style which are the only shoes I wear now for riding, skating, work, play, gardening, gym you name it they are my new favourite and only shoe, mainly because the slightly more ridged and stronger sole just hits the spot for everything… Maybe it could be a little more ridged for DH/trail riding which hopefully these provide.
  • 4 0
My Vans BMX mids (114s I think?) are somehow stiffer and more supportive than Half Cabs or SK8 His. I don't think the BMX line use any special sole compound blend. I have done all-day hikes in them and they are firm and supportive.I would think these have at least that level of support. Since Vans was bought by VF (Supreme, TNF, Dickies, etc) I have been drifting to Etnies, but these look pretty cool. I ride YTs though, and this might be too much LOL.
  • 7 0
I ride bmx 114's as my primary shoe, and they're a lot stiffer than regular vans. They have a little bit of toe protection that's probably not enough for park riding, but for the trails that I ride, they work great. I'd imagine since they were designed for bmx riders, they'd be really good for dirt jumping/skatepark riding as well.
  • 4 5
 No clipless version. I'm out.
  • 2 1
No they’re not suitable for mountain biking really if they’re the pro BMX range. They’re just an overbuilt version of a regular vans with a pop Cush insert. Amazing for BMX but not support for DH at all.
  • 2 0
@thenotoriousmic: We don't know what these are but I race DH DS and END in 114s and they are fine. I'm not a pro or even an Expert, really, though.
  • 1 0
@suspended-flesh: they’re usable at best and pretty sketchy if your ride anywhere wet a muddy. I mean I’ve done it a bunch of times when I’ve forgotten my five tens because the chances are I’d be wearing a pair but definitely would not recommend for DH. A impact pro would be a huge upgrade over a pair of vans in a DH race.
  • 1 0
@danielfloyd: Do they told up longer then Vans Pros?
  • 1 0
@93EXCivic: they’re as hit and miss any always. Same issues with the sole coming away from catching the cranks. I’ve got a pair of skate mids bmx which have been my main riding shoes that are solid after two years I got another pair and the sole came off after 6 months. Still the best for BMX though even if they might instantly disintegrate.
  • 9 2
That old man is who I wish I could be.
  • 7 0
Same. Ever since the search for animal chin.
  • 5 1
@jojotherider1977: Right? Put some respect on Caballero's name
  • 3 0
 That's Mr. Steven Caballero!
  • 16 1
@everythingsucks: Legendary skater, but also ultra legendary hater of bikes. Bloke is a massive hypocrite and is happy to take money from bike related revenue but complains about bikes a lot and threw a hissy fit when he learned about bmx riders using the term "half cab" for the trick similar to the skate trick of the same name.
  • 3 1
@Stuartkbmx: I don't think cab hates bikes, dude rips moto all the time and has a line with fasthouse.
  • 7 1
@TrevorAZ: as a moto enthusiast myself, I wouldn't lump moto in the same category as bmx/mtb. There are numerous podcasts, interviews, videos etc where he HATES on bmx and bikes, he still thinks we're in Dogtown in the 70's and it's really sad. I don't hate the guy, I respect him for his skating but just find it sad and bizarre after all this time he stills has this F bikes mentality like a child yet is happy to take the $$ in these and other colabs if it benefits him.
  • 1 0
maybe I'm old but I associate Caballero with Etnies still.
  • 2 0
@Stuartkbmx: That's a bunch of BS. Cab is a really down to earth and all around cool guy.
  • 4 1
@Stuartkbmx: can't speak on past hate on bmx but he rides emtbs a lot nowadays - all over his instagram
  • 5 1
@dchill: He does push Team Jesus pretty hard like Hosoi does - not my thing.
  • 3 0
@dchill: You're right, he is. I met him at the Big Day Out music festival in Australia in 2000, he was doing vert demos on the Red Bull ramp. Not many people there knew who he was, I'm not even a skater but I recognised him and had a quick chat after he finished a demo. Super nice guy and humble. That being said, it's a fact that he's on record talking shyt on bmx
  • 1 0
@djyosh: That's cool, I hope it's genuine and he enjoys it, and not just for the money
  • 4 0
@Stuartkbmx: He rides a YT Decoy, he's in this edit riding.
  • 1 0
@Stuartkbmx : Maybe he hates skating bowls and parks when bmx are there.
  • 5 1
@everythingsucks: maybe he does, maybe he should learn to share the park like everyone else? I would hope that in his older/wiser years having that Dogtown mentality is a thing of the past. I heard numerous times over the years (could be BS for all I know) that he was a high contributing factor for not allowing bmx into Vans skateparks for many years. Even Vans pro bmx riders with signature shoes weren't allowed to ride the bowls in in Vans skateparks up until very recently.
  • 2 0
@Stuartkbmx: agreed don’t buy his Vans shoes. Spend your money elsewhere. Support signature shoes from riders who aren’t dicks.
  • 1 1
@Stuartkbmx: bmx is hated in skate parks because they go way bigger and faster, and when they bail they send 30lbs of steel randomly flying. "No bmx" is generally a safety thing.
  • 1 1
@RonSauce: Exactly, I'm not against BMX in bigger parks but when you're in a small area there's not a lot of room for error.

The bmx in guys username makes me feel like he's had this beef for a long time.
  • 2 0
@everythingsucks: no beef here. As I said, I've got nothing against Cab, just calling it as I see it and what I've heard from him in interviews.

Getting off topic now but maybe it's a geographical thing. I grew up in Australia, have been fortunate enough to travel the world with my bike and now live in Canada. The only place I've ever encountered hostility towards bmx in a "skatepark" was in the US. I've always been respectful of skaters and other users in parks and enjoy watching skating as much as I can't do it at all. Not a fan of scooters at all but give them their deserved space and try to educate the youngins on park etiquette. Only time I've ever had "beef" was from American skaters who always instigated it.

Rarely has so little been said with so many words- shoes look great, text is cooperate gibberish ... I think we lost YT to the ChatGPT word soup.
  • 4 0
That shot of Aidan and Caballero is pretty dang rad!
  • 2 0
YT , why you do this to meee Frown I already have almost new Semenuk Etnies. Now I need to go down my pockets to match my Dirtliove and Red Tues.
  • 9 0
Talk about a first world problem
  • 2 0
Love YT and love Vans but where is Dylan Stark in the promo?! If anyone represents this colab it would be Stark. That’s some bullshiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!
  • 3 0
 I might have to get a pair . . . .
  • 2 0
Good luck, I tried. Can't find US shipping. NM. Go to the YT USA site, not the link.
  • 3 1
I wear vans. The times I’ve worn them riding have been fairly brutal. Too floppy
  • 8 5
 that's what she said..........
  • 3 0
Cab made this happen. He rides for both.
  • 2 0
I like them, but aren't a lot of mtb shoes designed to look like skate shoes?
  • 1 1
Exactly, they look like half of the flat pedal shoes out there, so not really a new angle taken there..
  • 1 0
 That's the point.

I think most of us that have been around for awhile used vans before flat pedal bike shoes were a thing.

I used to use them back in the day and I started making my own shanks to run in the shoes to add rigidity to them.
Most BMX guys are still on them.

So this is a bit of a full circle situation...

This is a situation where they can both test the waters... does YT drop a BMX bike? Does vans make an MTB specific shoe?

So you can wear an MTB shoe designed to look like vans or you can wear vans....
  • 1 0
If they keep on sponsoring this way, they can change the brand name into "OL Industries" (old legends) soon. Anyway - nice move to get Cab on board!
  • 1 1
Has any company done this before?

I honestly can not remember if they've done this before. This to me is huge.
Also... Imma need a pair of those white ones. I can't be wearing all red shoes where I'm from.
  • 7 0
What is huge about a MTB brand printing their logo on a pair of existing BMX shoes?
  • 1 0
There was TLD x Adidas shoes
  • 1 0
There was a GT Vans collab as well for GT’s 50th. Not sure they were available on the market though.
  • 2 0
 they need a Mush-edition insole........
  • 2 0
Was really hoping to see Cab shredding trails
  • 1 0
Same. Kinda surprised they didn't include some MTB footage.
  • 3 1
Nice to see they have done them in black and YT
  • 1 0
47 comments and no one has made a BMX Background joke - what's happening to the PB comments?
  • 2 0
Hopefully that died in 2023 along with the dentist jokes, looks like a session, Yt being run by neo nazis etc.
  • 1 0
@Struggleteam: The YT stuff was written by one person with an axe to grind, the rest you still see.
  • 2 0
Dang they already sold out on the US site. RIP
  • 2 0
I heard Dylan Stark's voice but didn't see him ride did I?
  • 1 0
Did they only have one pair per size or something? Basically sold out in a day or two?
  • 2 0
 Sick collab
  • 2 1
 Steve Caballero=f*cking Legend
  • 2 1
hell yeah. Heard he's quite the ripper on MTB and moto too...
  • 2 0
 Steve Cab!!! Legend!!!
  • 1 0
Gutted they didn't do a hi-top. Love hi-tops for DJ and pumptrack duty.
  • 3 4
Can’t tell if core, or cringe.
  • 1 0
