PRESS RELEASE: YT Industries

Like big hits and can’t lie? If so, it’s good news for you - there’s a method to this Uncaged madness which appeals to the gravity-greedy big hitters out there. Featuring a robust no-nonsense specification including a Fox 38 Performance fork, DHX Performance coil shock and cable actuated SRAM GX drivetrain, this bike ticks all the burly boxes. It’s time to have your cake and eat it too; coming to a bike park near you in both aluminum and carbon fiber MX options, everyone please welcome the Capra Uncaged 10.

CAPRA UNCAGED 10 CF

Frame and Features

Both aluminum and carbon versions offer 170mm of rear travel in an MX mullet configuration with size-specific seatstays of 433mm for S-L and 438mm for XL-XXL. ‘Hold my stuff and give me water’ was a theme when developing the Capra MK3 platform, hence why both frames include tool strap mounts and Thirstmaster 6000 water bottles as standard. As with all YT frames, attention to detail doesn't stop at the ride quality and looks. The noise-canceling program cuts the chatter, providing extensive frame protection and comprehensive internal cable routing to prevent chain slap and cable rattle on the trail.

Specification

Riding up front on the Ashen Green colorway frame, the FOX 38 Float Performance fork features a GRIP damper and floating axle chassis for a buttery feel in the chunk. Out back is a FOX DHX Performance coil shock with an independent two-position lever, specified with increasing spring rates as you climb the size range (350lbs S, 400lbs M, 450lbs L, 500lb XL, 550lbs XXL). Shifting is handled by SRAM with their GX drivetrain while Code R brakes cover stopping duties. Connecting with the ground is the timeless combination of Maxxis Assegai and DHR II tires – this time with a Double Down casing out back and EXO+ up front. Crankbrothers Synthesis Enduro wheels with front and rear specific flex characteristics keep things rolling, and the spec rounds out with an E*Thirteen chain device, Renthal cockpit, and YT Postman dropper with SDG Bel Air 3.0 saddle.

Well done yt for injecting a bit of value back into this ever increasing costs sport.

YT, Propain, Vitus, and Marin are the true innovators in mtb at the moment. Id rather have more money in my pocket than some special linkage or an underpowered light eeb.
  • 3 0
@succulentsausage: so true. My buddy has the Marin ebike and he loves it. It was such a killer deal compared to others out there.
And I have a Marin Rift Zone 29er. I've been riding it pretty hard for a few years and I've got nothing to complain about. I couldn't believe the price it was selling for and the performance I get out of it.
  • 1 0
@Leppah: you like the Rift Zone? can you compare it to anything?
  • 78 2
Not a fan of that color scheme, but that's a heck of a spec (at least in the more permanent parts you don't replace every year-ish) for $3500

Havent we had enough of the orange mtb?
  • 7 0
I saw this bike in the Mill today, the frame is a lot less green than these photos look, looks more like wet cement color. The red is actually a bit more vibrant, almost pink in real life. Way less Christmas than these photos make it seem.

Just imagine a red Zeb on that....
  • 7 2
Whats with the red zeb? Something new coming out?
  • 4 2
@noplacelikeloam: every one just thinks it looks sexy
  • 7 0
@noplacelikeloam: Mr melamed has one on one of his bikes, it was on his insta stories a few weeks ago, so just anticipating i guess!
  • 1 0
 @MartyMcfly2810: Verner has one too.

Hopefully this is more red than orange in person

drop the lowers on your zeb, give them a good clean, pop the dust wipers out and give them to your local friendly automotive paint shop with a case of beer and a wink, Red Zebs!

Actually goddamn criminal that its grey

 Zeb is dead Smile
Seriously, read some Zeb reviews, you will find that it's a mediocre fork. It's main advantage would be being red. I curently own a red Lyrik and would change it to whatever colored Fox any day.
  • 2 0
@lkubica: need to try a coil in there. Best fork ever once you ditch the air spring!
  • 5 0
@lkubica: or do better and change it for a Mezzer - it will most likely transform you into a Manitou-lover! Smile

@noplacelikeloam: its red and its sexy AF

@noplacelikeloam: They were one-offs that RS did for athletes to build hype for the new boxxer from my understanding. I trust the person that told me that bit of info, but I hope both of us are wrong.
  • 1 0
@noodlewitnosteeze: But then just yesterday Kaz showed one on his insta feed. Review coming tomorow?
  • 29 0
This price is so good for what you are getting. Compared to Commencal you'd have to pay another $1k for an enduro bike with a similar spec.
  • 17 0
Commençal stopped being competitive with these direct sale companies, about 10y ago
  • 3 0
@Uuno: I'm sure once they started getting more athletes on podiums and became more widespread it all went to their heads.
  • 4 0
You have to fund all these race teams somehow.
  • 25 0
That's an amazing spec. $2999 in Aluminum is such a good deal. Also props to YT for actually using all GX parts (minus cranks) instead of slapping a GX derailleur on with everything else SX or NX.
  • 5 6
To be fair... really the only crap performing part of NX and SX is the derailleur. The other parts are just heavy, but solid performers. So if they knocked off another couple hundred and mixed up the GX/NX/SX spec.. I'd be ok with that. As long as the derailleur was GX.

And honestly... an NX derailleur is a $25 B-Bolt away from being pretty much as good as a GX anyway.
  • 6 0
@islandforlife: I agree to an extent, but I'll add in the NX shifter onto the crap-list. I'm definitely not the only one who had the shifter break in no-time-flat, from minimal shifting force. I'm not sure where you find the upgrade B-Bolt for $25, but the cheapest I could find one was $40 CAD, and since the clutch is actually the component that failed on my NX derailleur (2 week's worth of riding), I don't think the cost of the bolt is worth patching the NX mech.

No complaints at all from me on NX cranks/ring/cassette, all those have lasted me a really long time.
  • 3 0
@islandforlife: NX clutch becomes/is too weak to prevent chain slapping in rocky descents. Otherwise it works fine with x01 B-bolt uppgrade.
  • 2 0
 @mammal: here's b-bolt set: www.bike-discount.de/en/sram-x01-eagle-rear-derailleur-mounting-bolt.

It's a great uppgrade for gx derailleur too.
  • 1 0
@JAK79: That's $30 CAD plus shipping, so probably about the cost of what I found as well. Not worth the $ IMO, since the clutch is also garbage (as we both mentioned above).
  • 3 0
I recently bent my NX cranks, though the hit I took might have bent or broken most others anyway.

I’ve had good luck with the NX cassette and shifter, and cranks till that hit, though the derailleur constantly needed to be adjusted and bent back into place. Definitely agree that full GX is a good choice for a bike intended to get beat on!
  • 1 0
@mammal: Actually found one on Amazon a couple years ago.
  • 1 0
@islandforlife: I would agree to a point, GX cassette is a good idea to reduce headaches for riders later on.
  • 14 1
Awesome value, great spec and looks real nice as well!

For the same spec, it seems pretty nuts to be adding 1/6th to the price just for a different frame material. Unless it really adds an equal amount to the quality of the ride.
  • 44 1
@vinay: $500 to bump from aluminum to carbon is pretty damn cheap. If its not worth it to the buyer, just stick with aluminum
  • 3 2
@sb666: Are they clear about what's the particular advantage of carbon over aluminum in this case? Back in the days many brands were selling it as a higher strength and/or stiffness over weight ratio but this isn't necessarily the case anymore. Sometimes it is about compliance, durability (if used with a tougher resin) or another advantage. So yeah, whether it is worth it depends on the qualities it brings. And indeed, if these are considerable then it could very well be worth it.
  • 2 1
@sb666: Interesting that they went to PF BB for the carbon frame. That alone is a deal-breaker for all of the anti-PF-BB crowd, which is shockingly large.

I'd still lean toward an alloy frame since that's $500 saved. $3k is darn good in this economy!
  • 4 1
@TurboDonuts: You have to bond an alloy insert into the shell to use a threadfit bb on a carbon frame, which adds cost/weight. Better to just go pressfit and if you have creaking issues run it with some retaining compound.
  • 2 0
@vinay: it used to be that only the carbon Capra frames were rated for a DC fork. That may have changed. I'm on an 8 year old CF Capra LOL.
  • 1 0
@suspended-flesh: Ah, considering the number of people complaining about creaky fork crowns, this could indeed be a quality that might nudge people towards the carbon option. I'm not sure what it is like today, but back when the Fox 40 was introduced it could be lowered a whole lot. It could be different nowadays with those dual air sprung forks as they need to top out for the equalizer port to open. Or can they still be lowered?
  • 9 0
Damn, this is a great value. I'd love to see more bike companies including regular cable drivetrains on new bikes. The new Transmission stuff looks kinda cool, but I'd rather keep the money in my pocket. I've been running wired GX for years, and it shifts gears when I press the shifter – what else do you really need?
  • 6 0
So that's the real price of a bike when there isn't much marketing, that the R&D is paid for, as well as the molds.
  • 6 1
So...I was looking for a new bike, stumbled across their website by accident and ordered one right away! Such a great spec for the money!
  • 7 0
without cable tourism we don't have good reason to complain.
  • 2 0
Al for Al YT are really competitive! I compared similar build at commencal and it’s around 1500$ Canadian more. Great job from YT. Couple years ago price were equivalent but now a commencal cost as much as big brands in store.
  • 3 1
Commencal has to warranty a lot of frames which adds to the pricing
  • 4 0
Can’t argue with the value of the bike so fair play to them for keeping it in check
  • 2 0
I got an email this morning about this new bike from YT and I thought the $2999 price was wrong. Parts spec was better than normal for this price point. I would buy this if I already didn't own a 21 Capra.Great job YT!

I just wish the seat tubes on the larger sizes wasn't to damn long
  • 2 0
These are a great deal. I just received a Core 1, for frame + wheels (swapping the rest). If these were out then, I'd have considered spending a bit more.
  • 3 0
Reasonable bike overall. Considering what many others companies are doing might be even outstanding.
  • 3 0
YT, take my money. a similar spec'd alloy propain tyee is plus 3700euros and there is no dropper post included.
  • 3 0
How is it so cheap? My buddy has a YT and they are great handling bikes. It’s hard to not buy one.
  • 3 0
I grab my water bottle off my mount with my right hand, any options to have the frame built for this?
  • 1 0
Wait.....What the hell is the Uncaged 9 Capra ebike w/ Ohlins!? Is a Capra ebike in the works because that looks sick!
  • 1 2
 Sorry, Decoy Uncaged
  • 3 2
Wait, “uncaged” means no bottle cage? Learn something new everyday they say..
  • 4 4
YT still believing that a CF frame must have a PF bottom bracket like a plus for the rider. We stepped from cable tourism in some brands to PF bottom bracket in others.
  • 2 0
Really cool frame color, I like it
  • 2 0
So sick to see YT being a big value brand again.
  • 2 1
Kudos to YT for adding some value to this sport, where costs have been continually rising.

  • 2 0
 nice bike and nice price
  • 2 2
 I like my derailleurs caged.
  • 1 0
 Sorry, sold out :-)
  • 4 5
Has the water bottle been photoshopped in?
  • 3 3
What makes you think so? This is the "uncaged" model which I think implies it doesn't come with a bottle cage, so they had to choose an alternative way to attach the bottle. The right side brace probably gets in the way when using a Fidlock mount (which requires you to twist the bottle in order to release it) so my best bet is that they used the Fabric bottle with their mounts. They'll probably also release a "caged" version where you'll get a regular (side-loading) bottle cage. Either way, I don't think it has been photoshopped in. Sounds like more of a hassle than just installing the bottle before you take the picture.
  • 2 1
Has this entire release been generated by AI?
  • 1 3
@marrrty: Would that be a bad thing? I use chat gpt at work all the time, it's frickin sweet

That's a one-sided frame bridge, and the bottle mounts are slightly offset to the left. I just received a Capra Core 1, it came with the same bottle/cage for free, and it fits with room to spare.
  • 2 0
@vinay: that's not what uncaged means. the bottle cage costs like a nickel to make and every new Capra can accept one. Uncaged is just what YT calls their 'limited' release models, versus the Core models that are always available.
  • 2 0
@vinay: I run a Fidlock Bottle in My Capra without any Problems. There is enough room to twist it out. The Fidlock 750 Compact was the only available solution for carrying a 750ml Bottle.
  • 2 4
I quite like YT's bikes, but the only one I would own is a DH or Dirtjumper from them. Need more water bottle space....
