@kylehutch every body keeps gettin this all mixed up. it is not that specialized can't afford him, it's that they don't want to pay him what he wants. in a sense, they don't think he's worth what he thinks he's worth.
@SeaJay Yeah, I'm aware of that. He's not going to lower his asking price just because he's going to some other company. Sure you could say Specialized doesn't 'want' to pay his asking price, but that doesn't change the fact that YT simply can not afford his asking price. He'll probably go to GT or Trek in my opinion.
@Kylehutch it's not that specialized doesn't have the money, it's simply that they believe his visibility in the market is not enough so they feel they won't make a benefit out of the deal because they don't sell as many more bikes to justify his asking price. YT might see that differently. And besides, you don't actually need the cash to pay him. If you have a solid business plan every bank gives you the money and there is other ways to pay, like parts of the company. I know from a few superstars in ski business where this was handled like this...
There's a lot to support the independent Red Bull/KTM team theory, which means YT isn't footing the whole price to pay Gwin. A corporate sponsor, rather than an industry sponsor, is far more likely to have the extra cash to pay his salary. You could argue he's more valuable to them, as well: to an industry company, he's a rider in a segment that accounts for a miniscule part of their sales(even YT is probably selling at least twice as many Capras as they are Tues.) To an non-industry company, he's someone who can promote their product in a visually spectacular way, which doesn't require the audience to really know anything about bikes.
In short, a corporate sponsor may look at funding a race team as a cheap way to get Gwin to do advertisements for them, & not really be as worried about how much promotion they get out of him at actual races.

I know the one weird trick that can save you $450 on that trainer. Pick up your bike. Open your door. Begin pedaling your bike. Enjoy "training". Maybe stop and grab a beer somewhere with the $450 you saved.
Except some of us have this white fluffy stuff to deal with for half the year. I refuse to buy a fat bike, there are other fun things to do in the winter.
The indoor stationary training of elliptical / treadmill / motion trainers is for Lifetime where you can enjoy the eye candy while doing cardio. Unfortunately my bike is sitting since it is snow season, so it is eye candy season right now.
You have to buy stuff below a certain cost to avoid them. If you buy a bike though, you're screwed. i paid 12% tariff on the bike. it still was a really good deal though.
Yeah, for us canadians CRC isn't really that great of a deal once all the little fee's and things come through. I bought a roadie hat from them a while back, ended up being 50 bucks.. For a hat!
They started shipping with a courier instead of Royal Mail. A bunch of us complained, and they went back to Royal Mail. Just got an order today; no fees.
It's a bit of a crap shoot and it's not really based on dollar amount unless our spending several g's. I know a Canada customs guy and he told me you will normally pay your provincial sales tax plus $9.95 customs handling fee with stuff under around $2-$3 grand but that it's really up to the person processing it and what they want to class it as, so you may pay duty as well which seems to be about 13%. He admitted it was fairly random. I've had a wheelset from crc show up with nothing at all owing but also had a $180 order show up with tax, custom fee and duty owing. I'd say make sure it's a good deal and be prepared to possibly cough up full fees.
One of the nasty surprises you get from CRC is the way the declare the value of the items your purchase - ie FULL VALUE.
My last purchase, I bought a dropper for what I thought was a good deal - about $235CDN. But then, got nailed for $75 CDN in duty. Huh?
Turns out CRC claimed the regular price of the dropper ($587 CDN), leading to the inflated duty charge. Hey - I don't mind paying duty, but only at the price of what I paid . Brutal!!.
@dvp8 - I feel your pain. I wonder if this is how you got hosed?
Anything shipped via DHL/UPS/FedEx/Purolator/etc will get crazy import/service fees. (UPS/Purolator offer a shipping service that includes all those beforehand) When shipped via national post (USPS for USA, Royal Mail for UK) it's hit and miss. If customs inspect your package they will charge duties, if they don't, no duties.
In Canada there are no duties on bike parts just complete bikes (13%) and pre-built wheels (6.5%),if you choose standard untracked shipping from CRC you may get charged taxes and $9.95 handling fees from Canadian Border Services, but as said above you might get lucky.Seems likea 50/50 chance. If you choose the tracked service you will get charged taxes extra fees from DHL.
@goytay Once you have a nice relationship with a shop, I agree, they'll try to give you good deals, but you can't go in there expecting them to give you deals on everything all the time. Sometimes they just can't compete with online prices. I remember buying Shimano SPD pedals online for cheaper than the price they get it for.
No i agree, somethings the shops just cant match,so the online thing is the only option, its just with our $ sucking right now, maybe the exchange might not be worth it?
Just a heads up Jenson USA brokers all their own packages through the boarder, you pay the tax and brokerage fees at online checkout and they guarantee the "to your door" price. Not that I'll be buying from them any time soon due to the dollar but still.
CRC used to be amazing when their shipper transferred the packages to Canada Post when it landed here. But a little while ago they dropped Canada Post and went with DHL. DHL charges for everything! You might still save a buck or two but not anywhere near as much as before.
In Brazil we pay 60% up to 500 USD, from that it goes to something close to 90%, BUT if you get courrier shipping (fastest option) it goes well above 100%. Yay.
If you look at the Canadian customs tariff list you will note that most bicycle related parts are import exempt from tariffs. If they charge you an import duty on a CRC order, look up the actual classification number (takes a bit of work as the gigantic f*ing PDF they provide is useless) and file a challenge with CBSA. It may take an hour out of your day but I have always been issued a refund cheque.
My last order from CRC arrived yesterday , took 5 days and arrived via Canada Post with no extra charges. Its sucks CRC is randomly using DHL now as it makes ordering a crapshoot. IMO it is better to make several small orders than one larger one.
30% of the price including shipping in Chile. Hit and miss also, but lately I've been getting hit a lot haha. Still in a lot of bike components you save good money buying from shops like Bike24, they use DHL but once arrives in my country is taken by our local mail, so they don't charge extra.
CRC told me that the courier is selected automatically, still I don't know why they use DHL knowing that outside EU they f*ck their customers up with extra shit.
@tourendo they aren't ramdomly using DHL if you pick the free tracked service they use DHL if you pick the free untracked service they use Royal Mail to Canada Post.assuming you spend over $99.
@rideonjon - look at the comments above mine, CRC is using DHL sporadically even when people are choosing the Royal mail option. I even emailed CRC before my last order telling them not to use DHL . Their reply was they will use DHL at their discretion regardless if the postal option was . I got lucky and my package arrived via Canada Post others haven't been as lucky.I wonder if CRC was using DHL because of the Christmas rush?
I've had many packages delivered from CRC via DHL without any tariffs or fees. DHL told me it depends on the price of the item and whether the US has imposed a fee for that type of item, which apprently they do for bicycles.
I think PB missed the ridiculous deals that Jenson has on banshee completes. A month ago I bought a 2014 spitfire complete off them for $2,000usd. Frames cost $1800 from banshee so this makes no sense, but it shipped to me and has been riding great! Sram 1x11, ROAM wheels, Xfusion sweep. They messed up with the front rotor mount but all I had to do was take the adapter off and use shorter bolts. Tossed a dropper, minions, and proper width bars on it and it has been awesome. The build was amazing. Link here: www.jensonusa.com/Mountain-Bikes/Banshee-Spitfire-Jenson-GX-Bike?cs=Raw
It may just be where I live but it has always cost me a heap more to build a bike up than to buy a complete bike. if you are going to buy a complete then swap out half the components it isn't worth it, but if there is something you like our your not super fussy on the exact components you can usually get a complete bike for a lot less than the parts especially if you get it end of season or some other sale
You just need to build a relationship with the guy in charge at the bike shop and go on rides with them. If you aren't a total dork you become a friend, friends get friendly prices. Therefore you get the frame $1000 off and purchase components through whoever gives you a good price, or if it's close just use the local shop to help them out, and source everything else at a discount. That is why people build bikes. Perfect bike for the same or less as the MSRP
Can't nukeproof understand ?? their current dh frame is FUGLY no one wants it !!!!! Even if it was 100$ I'd never buy it. Give us the Scalp back.... the Pulse is just.. wrong.
