Photo Recap - Bearclaw Invitational Practice
Aug 23, 2014 at 10:53
Ale Di Lullo
All the way from Poland Szymon has tricks and could be a dark horse for the podium on this kind of track.
Sam Reynolds looking relaxed.
Brandon Semenuk, a favorite as usual also likes the course so it looks like there won't be much room on the top spot.
The Claw shows off some steez.
Little Anthony was looking really focused today.
Another solid day of great tricks for Brett who is definitely a top spot contender.
This is a super technical course and it's not easy to pull tricks onto this step up.
Anthony pulled together a bad ass run in the seeding run.
The steezy frenchy is looking like he is in great shape.
The claw works hard to keep his creations in shape.
Thomas Genon channels a deep, dark force on the hike up...
He liked the course and pulled together a lot of solid runs today.
Paul was throwing down a lot of tricks and seemed pretty confident in the track.
Front Flip no hander.
The last jump of the course has seen some of the best tricks today in practice.
Stay tuned for more action from the finals today!

pretty much always my favorite slopestyle course of the year. claw is the truth.
(Aug 23, 2014 at 11:55)
Yeah this event still feels (looks) rather like a jam than a competition, wich is awesome!!
(Aug 23, 2014 at 18:27)
The Claw is life, The Claw is love.
(Aug 23, 2014 at 21:48)
The claw is the law.
(Aug 25, 2014 at 15:44)
The Claw is our master. The Claw decides who will go and who will stay!
(Aug 23, 2014 at 14:41)
Too bad it takes place on a Mountain that doesn't give two shits about riding or riders. They closed the bike park due to expenses. They installed covered escalators for skiers and boarders so they don't get snow on them when going up... Spending millions on something so skiers and boarders don't get snow on them rather than put any money into a bike park. Props to Claw he is the man and does wonders for the sport. Hopefully the mountain sees what he can do and changes their tune towards bikes, or sell it to someone who does.
(Aug 23, 2014 at 15:54)
They spend money on people who spend money on them
(Aug 23, 2014 at 16:47)
So basically, they are a bunch of cunts
(Aug 23, 2014 at 17:08)
They really missed it. In a sport that's growing all the time they chose to give up on it. I echo your sentiment in hoping someone who gets it buys the mountain. That being said, it was a wicked comp. Wish I would've gotten the bail out on the step up on video. Hopefully someone did. Rider on the step with no bike, nice!

BurkeW, here is some business 101 for you. Lift excess Bike Parks loose money, they only operate because of revenues from their winter seasons.Whistler is the only park that could survive on its own. Washington has had some shit seasons because of snow and had to make some hard decisions. If they kept the Bike park there would be no more Mt Washington, period. Its a Business! if the money out doesnt equal the money in, then changes need to be made, or the business will fail. i was as disapointed as you were when they closed the Park, but i understand the reasons. The Bike Park wasnt the only aspect of the Mountian that suffered.
(Aug 23, 2014 at 17:34)
I agree with you, but like any other business it needs to be promoted. Most people I talk to around the Comox Valley had no clue you used to be able to go and ride lift access trails on Mt. Wash. And not once did I ever see/hear of any promotion trying to get more people to come check out the bike park! Sure they had the learn to ride week, but the only place that was advertised was Pinkbike, and most people on Pinkbike know (at least somewhat) how to ride. So sure it didn't make sense to run it as a business, but that is only thanks to years of mismanagement and trail neglect. So I hope they have another shitty snow year this season, and start looking into how to make a bike park a profitable venture!
(Aug 23, 2014 at 19:26)
Fair comments, i cant comment on their shitty marketing and promotion but if it was non-existent, then they will defiantly fail! i knew some of their trail builders and they didn't even own Mountain bikes?????
its funny that Panarama has a shitty snow year almost every year and they seem to make a good go of it!
(Aug 23, 2014 at 20:35)
Highland Mountain Bike Park is 100% biking, no other sports. They can survive because the place freakin rules.
(Aug 23, 2014 at 20:53)
its a bummer, I really enjoyed riding at Mt. Washington sketchiness and no lines.
(Aug 23, 2014 at 22:33)
heard that sun peaks bought Mt Washington..?
(Aug 24, 2014 at 22:40)
panorama is close to calgary and, while it competes with fernie and kicking horse for calgarians, it still has a big centre to draw people from. Mt. Wash has islanders to draw in obviously, but that's not a lot of people. They need to get folks from vancouver over there but how do you compete with whistler? Not only is it the sickest bike park around but it's closer! The same could be said for winter time, but maybe there's more skiers than DH bikers on the island?
(Aug 25, 2014 at 11:54)
Mt Prevost/Tzuhalem/Cumberland go to those places on the island and tell me there is no riders. There are riders lots and lots and even more coming up. Two of the biggest names in riding live and ride on the island. The Claw and Steve Smith, not to mention the up and comers which are many Tennant, Stirling, Remi, just to name a few. All I've ever said regarding the closure is they could have TRIED. This is the age of marketing there are numerous free ways to get people in the know. They could have gotten some statistics easily from a site like PB with a questionnaire "How many people plan to make the trip/buy seasons passes." They still have a chair going for tourists who want to hike around the top of the MT. So hikers get a chair to go hike that seems stupid. They barely get anything per person but some how they make it work... Biking tickets gotta make more... Anywho the vids and pics look great from the event. Done ranting about it haha.
(Aug 25, 2014 at 15:10)
Exactly. There is already not enough DH on vancouver island (the island cup DH series has been dying off for years) and with the closure of our only lift access bike park, I think it won't even occur to lots of Van Isle locals to give DH a try. And
. The main thing that keeps people on Vancouver Island from riding whistler is the ferry! Sure its not a very long drive, but when the ferry ride is $100+ each way, it gets real pricey real quick. And I truly believe if the marketed themselves correctly, Mt Washington could find enough riders on Vancouver Island to make a bike park work!

As one of the two people building this year getting all lips and landing re shaped and raking everything in 40 hours to get this course running was crazy amount of work for two people getting this done. B and a shovel kids!
