Bike Check: Erik Fedko's Single Crown YT Tues - Freeride Fiesta 2022

Jan 25, 2022 at 11:15
by Alicia Leggett

One of the most exciting slopestyle team change news pieces came last week, when Erik Fedko and YT announced a new partnership. Throughout a successful three-year stint with Rose Bikes following his rise to the top of the slopestyle game, Fedko snagged several Crankworx slopestyle podiums and other impressive results, and considering he's just 23, he is just getting started. The young German rider said he's looking forward to working with YT on his creative projects, so we're excited to see what that entails.

To kick off the sponsorship, Fedko headed south to the Freeride Fiesta in Mexico, where he spent a week hitting massive jumps and getting a feel for the new bike right away. The most noticeable part of this Tues is the single crown Zeb, which gives him 190mm of travel up front. Erik said that with how capable bikes and suspension have become nowadays, there's really no real reason to run a dual crown fork on a course like the Freeride Fiesta jumps - especially as he wanted to do barspins and tailwhips. Let's take a closer look.

The Tues is a downhill bike through and through, but Fedko is running his with a Zeb so he can do barspins and tailwhips.

We'll likely see more and more setups like this one in the future thanks to the capability of long travel, single crown forks.

I9 hubs keep things rolling smoothly. The bike's contact points are from Reverse Components (pedals), Title MTB (saddle), and ODI (grips).

Title bars and SRAM Code RSC brakes - dialed in for barspins, of course.

It's funny how there's a slow (but still marginal) trend towards double crowns in Enduro and a trend towards single crowns in Freeride.

yes it's funny, but there's a logic behind it

Freeride involves more tricks than Enduro Wink

Freeride Bikes seem to make more and more a Comback
  • 15 12
And sadly, I predict half the field in Rampage will be long travel single crown for the trick factor.

@neimbc: yead definattely, rampage definately isnt as good anymore.

we need more barspin backflips in enduro racing.
  • 6 0
 @neimbc: why "sadly"?

Prediction: in two years Fox will come out with a single crown 40 based on their DH fork. And everyone will need one even if they don't do bar spins or tailwhips.

But they will be oh so stiff on the well graded blue flow trail most buyers will use them on!
  • 5 8
@vhdh666: Because over the years it's become more slopestyle than freeride. Too groomed. That seems to be the common complaint.
  • 10 0
@neimbc: A common complaint from armchair warriors. Things have to be groomed if you are going that big. Everything out there in modern rampage is WAY gnarlier than it used to be, whether it's sending big jumps/drops or the steeps. Zink/ Straits chutes are pure madness, and the mega drops they are doing these days are bordering on stupid (in a good way... I think...). It's frankly insane that they even hit stuff as big as they do, let alone flip or spin off of them.
  • 3 0
@leon-forfar: This. Don't get me wrong I miss the old natural rampage lines but lets face it, huge aerial moves with tricks are what win rampage. If your going to spin / flip 60 ft off over the hill, that shits gonna have to be dialed in.
  • 1 0
@cougar797: Yup, I guess the sport has moved past "just" being able to ride the ridiculous things they do.
  • 4 0
@neimbc: like a lot used to ride, remember the TOTEM...
  • 1 0
@Andykmn: I'm picking up on the shade thrown at the 38mm forks that recently came out but those were legit. Hell, I only weigh 160lbs but going from a Fox 36 to RS Zeb was a gamechanger
  • 2 0
@peterman1234: not really shade at the 38s, just an observation that a)most people are suckered into being overbiked and overcomponent-ed by industry and media (and friends). And b)it seems the jump from 35mm to 38mm made sense for RS (Manitou went 34 to 37 too), but from 36mm to 38mm for Fox seems to small for anything but staging releases. Why not just jump to a single crown 40 in the first place and leapfrog everyone?

Looks great and it must feel even better to ride this. However, I dont understand why it is not single speed, especially, with single crown fork and expected turn bars. In general, having derailleur on freeride or dh bike seems redundant to me anyway. I guess it must be used on parking lot for riding to chairlift only. Otherwise it is just unnecessary part to me - extra cost, extra cable and shifter on bars.
  • 11 0
 Because sponsors.
  • 2 0
@Odinson: Interesting yeah! Old vivid, too. I wouldn't be suprised if Semenuk reached out to Sram himself to be getting a Short Cage AXS just in time before rampage.
  • 11 2
Not sure I would ever go SS on a Dh bike because.... you need different gears on a good few tracks and out the start!
  • 4 1
For bike park/FR I recently switched to the SB one singlespeed and fell in love. (Same setup a lot of the FR guys are on) I’ll never go back to gears. Unless you’re racing, there’s really no need for it. Bike is cleaner looking, quieter, easier to maintain, and easier to do fakies/half cabs if you’re ballsy enough to do them on big features of course.
  • 4 2
@jmcleod66: Some tech DH trails would be much more difficult on a single speed. I can think of plenty in Whistler where, unless you know it really well and you're going flat out, you need a few cranks in a lower gear for awkward and low speed sections. But yeah for tricks single makes sense I'm sure.
  • 1 0
@jmcleod66: I ran a similar set-up on my previous big suss bikes and agree it works very well. The only occasions I felt the need for gears was needing to put in an extra crank or two at high speed to clear big jumps, but they were few and far between.
  • 5 3
Because you still need a chain tensioner that does mostly the same thing as a derailleur, and if you need that why wouldn’t you want gears to go with it?
  • 1 0
@trippleacht: the old Vivid is wild, gotta be 10 years old tech by now
  • 1 0
@trippleacht: That is because the RS Super Deluxe doesn't come in 267mm length.
  • 3 1
@dthomp325: reduced cost, less clutter, less maintenance, better chain line, less risk of crunching gears, bit of weight saving, cleaner look, ability to use stronger chain. That's all I've got for now...
  • 1 0
 @dthomp325: are right.

I could not imagine racing; Inners, Ae, Fort William (the XC pedal though the woods is torture in too high a gear), Glencoe, old Dunkeld, Old Pitfichie without gears. Oh, that old Stinky dog track would have been murder without gears, Nat champs last year and Glencoe would be ok though SS.
Oh.... thats every Dh race track in Scotland and most nationals need gears!

But there would be a cable and shifter less!!!
  • 1 0
@tremeer023: stronger chain... go 9 speed then. Good gears dont crunch, its not a real weight saving on a Dh bike that matters is it!!!

The list is endless as it really has no start Wink
  • 1 0
@betsie: if you are racing then that's different but for weekend warriors riding for fun ss can be beneficial. Find your inner zen and embrace minimalism. I agree with your point about weight though.
  • 1 0
@tremeer023: It would stop my stupid Sram mech now the clutch has gone making such a noise!
I pedal my Dh bike up the local trails (first couple of laps or with the enduro boys)!
I could take out the enduro bike but its not as much of comfort blanket when you point the bike down the hill. haha.
  • 2 0
Derailleur on DH bikes redundant? Guess you don’t race DH then
  • 8 0
It's nice seeing people kill it with different bike configurations, this way I know without a doubt it's my lack of skill, not my setup that's the issue.
  • 11 10
Add at least 5mm of insertion depth for the steerer in that crown and I will feel much better about running a long travel single crown on what forfathers used Monster T for Big Grin May be less creaky too... RS is still doing better on that front than Fox though. The crown of 38 is plain ridiculous.
  • 4 3
What's so ridiculous about a crown that seems to holds up to everything it's thrown at? Did you break one? Did anyone else?
  • 7 2
Couldn't agree more, will be creaking after first run :-) . Don't suppose it's an issue when you're sponsored though.
  • 5 4
@trippleacht: Just for mental comfort Big Grin
@tbgd - depends solely on particular fork. Some workshops can decreak crowns with use of a pressing machine and work ethics. My friend has both. In most cases creaking is caused by uneven contact surface, it may be anything from whacky anodizing to sht like dirt. Says a lot about production and QC standards...

  • 6 1
@trippleacht: They creak very quickly and another point is the lateral stiffness:
In terms of lateral stiffness, a Zeb or 38 is soft compared to a Fox 40 or even a Boxxer.
Maybe this is not a big point if you ride freeride Fiesta, but on steep descents it is.

And the look ... dual crown looks so much better on a big bike.

 @calmWAKI: waki you're a bullshit artist.
  • 2 0
@calmWAKI: Indeed - there's a guy on youtube who will press stanchions out of the crown and re-press them in with loctite bearing compound. I did the same thing to my steerer using a headset press. Bit sketchy but it worked. Surprised loctite isn't used to begin with!
  • 2 1
@iduckett: I looked for my buddies insta posts but didn't find that one thing he posted with Fox crown looking like crap inside after he pressed the steerer out. Must have been a story. But looking at it no wonder it creaked! Just install anything with a bit of dirt between biger surface like bearings in a headset or slightest dirt between stem and a bar - it will creak!

Oh no. The king of “this product sucks” when your an average at best rider, can’t whip or do any tricks is back…. YAY!
  • 6 2
@freeridejerk888: which product sucks? Who said what. I can't whip that is true. I did not order a ZEB because I suck so bad Lyrik is enough. I apologize for using the Ultimate version, not a Select that would match my skill - IF justice existed. I see you still angry. But I am calm and have nothing to prove. Blisssss...

 @DoubleCrownAddict: Not you again
  • 2 0
@calmWAKI: You're onto something with the anodization, I think in my case it was just corrosion/use with just the two raw materials butted up against each other. The interface between my steerer and crown had darker looking spots, and pitting. FWIW it's a 2014 Pike that's been enduro raced and generally beaten on Big Grin
  • 3 0
@DoubleCrownAddict: Why though? Haven't your learned from last time?
  • 5 2
My GOD, Continental TK , he must be very loyal to his sponsors Wink And most probably run tubeless judging from the sealant leaks all over the place Wink And like 40PSI?
  • 5 0
came here to say this hhahaha.. balls of steel
  • 2 0
Yeah its funny how he's riding stuff that would be deemed to be unrideable by the average keybord warrior on those jumps.
  • 1 0
Maybe people should begin to take a look at Fork heights, then they would realize that a 200mm fork can be lower than a 180 or 190 SC fork, and then realize nothing stops them from riding single crown, or dual crown on any bike
  • 1 0
Sram's HS2 rotors are kind of hard to find when even their athletes can't have two of them! HS2 front & Centerline rear on Fedko's Tues.
  • 1 0
Let's not forget the Vivid rather than a super deluxe on the back....
  • 2 0
Does YT warranty a single crown on a Tues??
  • 10 2
Well they don’t warranty the dual
Soooo
  • 2 2
 @freeridejerk888: actually they do
