Bike Check: Josh Lowe's Custom Hardline YT Tues is Painted with Real Rust

Sep 7, 2022 at 10:56
by Alicia Leggett

As we roll into the this year's Red Bull Hardline, riders are showing up ready to throw down, and maybe none so much as Josh Lowe, voted last year's Rider of the Week.

This year, YT surprised him with a custom Tues, painted with a specific paint and technique that actually incorporates real rust - that was the only way to make the color and texture look authentic, said Dennis Dastig, Senior Graphic Designer at YT.

The process involves applying a paint that contains metal particles, then adding an oxidizing agent to rust the metal in the paint. Then, it needs to be lacquered over to stop the process from continuing. The method can be used on a wide variety of surfaces - hence the rusted carbon fiber bike.

The result is pretty unique.

Ready for Hardline.

Josh was surprised and over the moon to check out his new bike.

Drivetrain: SRAM XO

bigquotesI actually couldn't believe it to be honest. When the team pulled it out of the van I thought it was for somebody else, and for it to look that good too was an absolute dream come true. I can’t wait to send it here at Hardline.Josh Lowe

The paint job is obviously the central focus of this bike, but it would also be a dialed machine with the stock coloring.

Josh is running a Fox Factory DHX2 with a 425 lb spring paired with his 40 up front.

Lowe. Custom AF, with a seven-speed XO drivetrain for the pedally bits.

The Crankbrothers Mallet DH 11 and Fox Factory colors go nicely with the bike.

Up close and personal.

We look forward to watching Josh send the massive course.

Looks terrible IMO. But funny as hell. Came down to comment the same.

The irony is there, but in terms of paint work it looks amazing. I like it.

Looking forward to seeing someone on a rusty old clunker with a carbon fiber finish next year.

Loving how well it turned out. Not only the rust look but especially the wear marks. Those too worried about resale value will probably have to look elsewhere Wink . In a Cranked magazine from a good while ago I read an article with Ralph Richardson from Ra bikes (ra-bikes.com) whose frames were actually covered in rust. They looked amazing too, can't find any pictures on the web though. My previous frame (DMR Switchback from 200Cool also developed some rust around the headtube area from cable rub and it never became an issue. My daughter still rides it. I don't think surface rust is as much of an issue as people seem to think it is.

To think all they needed to do was give him a white frame and rub some Georgia red clay on it. Rusted for life.

I love bikes that look like urban decay but are actually in perfect working order. I know the look isn't for everyone, but I always loved the sleeper hotrod cars that looked like a bucket of junk at first glance, but would blow your doors off.

@pixelguru The rat rod fad is annoying as crap to me.

Daughter's team had a car show fund raiser and all these guys brought old rusted out pickups with the original engines but then had beautifully upholstered bench seats & high end wheels.

They were just rust buckets to me. Feels like a poor man's way of taking short cuts and feeling like he's got a custom hot rod. It's not...it's budget and unfinished. Beer

@blowmyfuse: As a car guys 1st ( bike hipster 2nd) I couldn't agree more. And them rat rod owners spend mo-ney to make em look like shit/ be a danger to everyone on the road. I'd kinda like to add pin striping on my bike to ape that rat rod style but at the end of the day I'm nauseated by my flaking clear coat with rusty scale...looking like a rusty shipwreck now, and can't wait to strip it down and have it powder coated.

wow..a real heartbreaker here..just another beautifully painted frame absolutely tarnished by the infamous, most revolting, orange fork. a shame truly. rip
  • 41 1
Imagine this with the limited edition 38 root beer colour
  • 21 1
I painted my wife’s bike and now the fork lowers match the frame. A silly amount of people are blown away that the fork is not black or “brand colour”.

“Wow, you painted the fork!”
Yeah, and the rest of the bike too.
“But the FORK, dude. It’s… It’s the same colour as the frame!”

Why is this so shocking to people.
  • 3 0
@Lookinforit: That root beer color was on the 36. The 38 was pistachio.
  • 13 0
@Lylat: probably they are confused because you painted the lowers on her USD fork?!
  • 1 0
@gbones: Cane Creek had a beauty root beer colour.
  • 1 0
If the RideWrap or other companies would make fork protection in custom colours, that would be so good.
  • 1 0
@Lylat: I have a 40 with black uppers and just bought new fox decal kits to kill the orange amd match the rest, get lots of questions about my custom fork, lol.

Another beautiful paint job ruined by Fox orange lowers
  • 11 2
"The Fox Factory colors go nicely with the bike." yeah, nah.
  • 2 0
It's kind of ironic that the standard YT blue frames are one of the only colours that work in the fox orange lowers.

And yet the fork was left unouched, sadly its orange.

Cool idea but can we please ditch the orange lowers? They don't go with everything people.

White, with rust/poop dribling out of the seals would have worked.

Looks like someone dubbed their drunk friend home from the put on the handle bars and they shat themselves.

Paintjob looks like rusty bones. I like it.

Yeah the rough white is cool even without the rust, I bet it would be tough to keep clean long term though.

Could have had any color, but went with white so when the guy in front of you rips ass in practice you’ll know your on a good pace because the finish goes from white to fart dusted rust.
  • 4 2
I respect the craftmanship, but this is not for me. It's like buying jeans with holes in them, I just don't get why you would want to make something nice look like junk and go through a lot of work doing it.
  • 3 0
Now that is unique. I hope he has a riding kit to match.

"that was the only way to make the color and texture look authentic"

I think many many model painters would beg to disagree.
  • 2 0
@justinfoil: And not only model builders, car guys have been doing the "Fauxtina" thing for quite some time now!

I even remember seeing a '33 Ford Coupe that was actually a fiberglass reproduction body, and it was so well done that most people were astonished when told it was FRP. But when it failed "The magnet test", they finally got it.

I love the feeling of rusty spoons........
  • 1 0
I'm sure the same could be done to the spring? Just get a raw steel spring, oxidize it, and apply the varnish? It would also be appealing for many other bikes.
  • 2 0
I hope he's had his tetanus shot
  • 1 0
Appreciate the paint job, but it would be way more interesting in some straight tubes chromoly frame
  • 2 0
The rust trend will die soon

Hopefully.....
It needs to ; )
