Carson Storch shared on Instagram that he fractured his tibial plateau trying a 720 tailwhip to an airbag.

He wrote that his MRI showed no ligament damage, but imaging did show a compression fracture to his tibial plateau, the top of the large bone right below the knee joint.

Luckily, the break is minor enough that Carson expects to be back in action in a few weeks, and says he's on a mission to land that trick on dirt this year.

We wish Carson the best and hope to see him back in action soon.

Optimism is great, but PTs say this injury takes 3-4 months to heal..

15 years later my wife's still dealing with what are essentially life-changing issues from a 10mm depression of the tibial plateau. Costs a solid 1500/year on physio/RMT and she'll probably be into a knee and consequential hip replacement by 50.
Fingers crossed it works out well for Carson though.

Treating a number of these over the years as a PT, minimum 3-4 months is accurate.

Unfortunately, that is more like it. Adding to it is that it's a weight-bearing injury, so you all know what that means......

@RayDolor: sorry, i'm daft - what does that mean? longer recovery? more issues due to muscle loss during recovery?
  • 1 0
@RayDolor: every doctor visit, maybe another 4-6 weeks...
  • 1 0
@shredddr: Most of the time, they specify "no weight bearing" for 6-8 weeks.
In such cases, is a drag. Then there is the question go pain. Chronic pain. No bueno.

@juanny: i‘m sure bikers like him have more things to be replaced by 50. they push too hard.

I had this without compression, and it took six weeks, but after a year there is still a little pain now and then. But with a compression it is a lot more difficult. Arthrosis etc.

pro's get back on their bikes waaaay too early. I forget who it was but I remember one rider having surgery shoulder surgery and then racing in the same week.

I fractured my tibial plateau a couple of years ago, I was determined to get back out but it was 3 months before I could even start on a turbo and another 6 weeks before I could ride outside.

@boogereater42069: depending what it was you maybe can get out soon. A plated collar bone break with no ligament damage can bear the weight of riding, but yeah probably not ideal. I'm 3 weeks out from shoulder surgery to repair a grade 3 AC separation with a fractured collar bone. It happened the last week of March and I'm not even thinking I'll be on a bike until late June if things go really great.

I did mine and I wasn't allowed on an MTB for 11 months and then I really got going again about three years on. I still have problems with it...

Shit dude... I fractured my tibia plateau back in the first and only race I ever did back in 2014... You will make it through, just focus on rehab a bunch and listen to your doctors!

It’s a crazy injury. Really, everyone’s injury is different. My tpf meant surgery repair to a bunch of stuff. I still habe nerve damage 1.5 yrs later but otherwise back to full health and function. The key for me was pt followed up by time on the bike and crossfit. If Carson is patient does what the physicians tell him to do, he’ll be good to go in not too much time.

how strong these guys are that muscles protect ligaments from bad twist when contracted and ends up as a compression fracture from the force of the impact.wow

OOF. I bruised my tibia plateau and sprained the tissue surrounding it while skiing, and it was so painful. Can't imagine fracturing it.

Although knee injuries are never nice, I'm glad to hear that it wasn't too major. Take it easy and heal up!

Aw that’s cute, just a quick few week recovery. Really sucks, definitely going to take a touch more time than that Frown

You'll be fine. Mine was WAY worse. 12 weeks, then your knee will be sore for 8 months.
