PNW Components Updates Range Handlebar & Stem

by Alicia Leggett

PNW Components released an updated version of its Range Handlebar and Range Stem today, now in both 31.8mm and 35mm options.

The Range Handlebar now comes standard at 800mm rather than 780mm, but despite the extra length, has shaved about 25 grams by changing the butting profile to use less material. In terms of the other numbers, PNW has opted not to fix what wasn't broken and has kept the same relaxed geometry as the previous version with 30mm rise, 5° upsweep and 10° backsweep.

bigquotesEverybody loves corndogs, right? Wrong! In a hotly contested debate, we learned that corn dogs aren’t for all of us. Which naturally brings us to the 31.8mm vs 35mm diameter dispute. We held off on making a 35mm bar until we could turn one out that we wanted to ride ourselves. Enter the Range Handlebar Gen 3, through a combo of 2014 aluminum and smart butting profiles, we made sure this larger diameter bar is an absolute dream to pilot.PNW Components

Handlebar details:
Width: 800mm
Upsweep: 5°
Backsweep: 10°
Rise: 30mm
Diameters: 31.8mm / 35mm
Material: 2014 alloy
Price: $69 USD
Availabile: Now

The Range Stem has been fully redesigned, and while it doesn't look all that different from the old one, it now weighs about 40 grams less. Like the Range Handlebar, it's available in 35mm and 31.8mm diameter options, with 40mm or 50mm length options. Like all PNW Components products, the Range Handlebar and Range Stem come with a lifetime warranty.

The Range Handlebar is available for $69 now and the Range Stem is available for pre-order for $79. Stems are expected to start shipping in August. More information is available at pnwcomponents.com.

2014 Alloy? I thought this was an update. I was hoping for that new 2021 Alloy

Well played. 2014 was a pretty good year for us.. But in all seriousness, we're really happy with the 2014 Alloy and think it provides a pretty ideal ride feel.

@pnwcomponents: backsweep is soo underrated. my joystick 6up 9 back feel awesome. i think im actually gonna get this in 35 clamp.

@tonkatruck: Thanks! If you happen to snag a pair we'd love to hear what you think.

@tonkatruck: 6 up 9 back should feel nice rather than awesome

@Gregmurray50: just wait until they make it in a 42.0mm clamp diameter

@Gregmurray50: dang my friend, that was well played!

I’d like 2019 COVID bar please - ride more and not work at all…
  • 3 0
@pnwcomponents: since youngs's modulus (basically elasticity of material for non engineering nerds out there) is pretty much the same between different al alloys, I do not understand how this effects the ride feel.

@Pelmenium: Maybe (and not an engineer) it is just easier to use to get a consistent butting profile? @pnwcomponents any feedback without giving away the secrets???

 $69. Nice.

Price is too sexy to be Made in the PNW, sadly........

Nice to see someone still making 31.8mm bars. Everything seems to be going 35mm and they all feel terrible, except the OneUp bars. They got it right.

What did one up do differently?
  • 8 0
 Renthal still does!!
  • 5 0
 @chillrider199: Make them oval.
  • 7 0
Everyone still makes 31.8 bars. Especially in aluminum.
  • 4 0
@chillrider199: as already mentioned they made them slightly oval to give a bit of flex. They feel fantastic. Not harsh like most 35mm bars.

Depends when you bought your OneUp bars - they've changed since their initial release...

@whitebirdfeathers: Simple. I like it. Thats pretty cool.
  • 1 0
 @bscic: how so?
  • 1 0
I really like my Renthal Fatbar 35 over my ENVE M6, idk what it is
  • 1 0
@bscic: when ? I bought some 2 years ago and a few months ago. They feel the same
  • 1 0
@chillrider199: engineer the slight flex and dampening into their 35 mm bar that everyone loves from a good 31.8 mm bar that somehow almost every other bar manufacturer has managed to not achieve. To be fair @weareonecomponents have an outstanding 33 mm (35 mm with alloy sleeve) bar that would be perfect if it had 10º back sweep (IMHO). But like OneUp they took a systems approach to the design.

 10 Degree backsweep sounds nice!
  • 2 0
About 20% less nice than 12 degrees!

I know PNW is based in the PNW, but maybe a photo or two were you can actually see the detail of the product would be good for a product launch? How am I supposed to see this black stem in this dark ass photo?

 No weight listed?

I'd much rather see multiple rise options than a 35mm option
  • 2 1
Most 35's are too stiff and promote arm pump and fatigue. Especially on rough and fast stuff. Plus these hit rise and sweep that fit me n my rig. But a lot of riders seem golden on 35's. Personal preference. Get what ya like and be stoked!

@thegoodflow - We were able to shave some weight and go a bit wider with this version of the Range Bar. Both diameters are 800mm wide and the 35mm weighs in at 310 grams while the 31.8mm option weighs in at 314 grams. Thanks for the feedback on the different rise options!

@NVJAY775 - For sure! We held off on releasing a 35mm bar until we were confident that it felt just as good as the 31.8mm option.

@pnwcomponents: thanks for the reply. 45mm-rise 31.8 please!
  • 4 0
@pnwcomponents: seconded on the rise options! I think I speak for many short people when I say a ~10mm 31.8 would be welcomed...with chop guides down to 700mm while you're at it Big Grin
  • 2 0
 @pnwcomponents: I would buy a 50mm ride option!
  • 1 0
@thegoodflow: Nice! Keeping the reach and increasing the handlebar stack! @pnwcomponents I would be in. :-)
  • 1 0
@pnwcomponents: count me in for some more rise options. ended up putting a range bar on my XC bike because it's the best bar geometry i have found, but stack wise, that bike is just not designed for a bar with this much rise.

Huge thank you to everyone for your recommendations! We really appreciate the feedback and will make sure these requests get to the right people in our team. Cheers!

 Enve M9's, they are sick
  • 1 0
@suppsy754: I wish there was a 800 wide highside. Love those bars on the dj.
  • 1 0
@Ashe14: These are 50mm rise alloy if the M9's aren't your jam.

@Svinyard: spank spike also available in 50mm rise
  • 1 0
@thegoodflow: Yeah those look nice and they are 31.8 too...which after using both, is the superior bar diameter.
  • 1 0
@Ashe14: They are out now! Woo!

 @whiteranger3: They are now! Woo!
  • 1 0
@suppsy754: yup, been running them since they were released!

The 30 rise and 10 back sweep is a really good combo and I think most riders would like it for trail/enduro type riding. I really like mine.
  • 2 1
Finally another stem available in a market that has a serious dearth of options.
  • 1 0
They used to be one of the only companies that did a 45mm length option which was a nice change but it looks like it is gone for now.
  • 2 0
 @mrtoodles: Spank... 43x31.8 and 45x35, I have both.
  • 1 0
Very nice, and dare I say...Affordable! Thanks for keeping it real in the price department. Next stop...Pedals??
  • 1 1
Is it just me or am I the only one who wants a bar with more upsweep, you all know rotating them forward just makes them stiffer right?
  • 1 0
Finally stem that looks like a stem! Thank you!
  • 3 0
Stems that look like stems are our favorite kind of stems! We're happy we were able to hit that mark.
  • 1 0
 Take my money.
  • 1 1
So do these count as a new.......Range?

I'll see myself out.
