Shaun Palmer's Truck, Motorcycle, & Mountain Bike Stolen & Truck Totaled in High Speed Chase

May 4, 2022 at 13:38
by Alicia Leggett

Shaun Palmer's box truck, vintage 1981 Yamaha 465 motorcycle, Canyon hardtail, and Snap-on tools were recently stolen in Portland, Oregon. Palmer's personal belongings were removed from the truck, which was then totaled in a high-speed chase, according to a GoFundMe page created by Palmer's longtime friend, Brad Holmes.

bigquotesI have personally witnessed Shaun’s generosity over the years and I have seen Shaun help many others when they needed it most. I couldn’t think of a better opportunity than this for some of his friends, fans and loved ones to pay it forward to Shaun and let us help him recoup some of those losses. Thank you so much for your support!Brad Holmes

well that sucks...however, wouldn't insurance cover this? also, assuming they caught the asshat(s) involved, you could go after them for damages. Not sure go-fund me is necessary until he exhausts other remedies.

Also...came for high speed chase video...leaving some what disappointed

Have you ever tried to 'go after' a Portland tweaker for damages? Who knows what kind of insurance Napalm had, if any?
  • 7 1
Whoever stole it, and was presumably caught, probably has nearly nothing for insurance to go after. Insurance should cover it... but I'm guessing they're dragging their feet.

Also, let's not forget that this dude has made enough money that he could live off the interest for the rest of his life without working, yet we as individuals with 1/10 the net worth (or far less in some cases) should donate to him? This has to be satire.

If he didn't have insurance for this, he can certainly afford it better than most.

Everyone says Palmer made millions, but is that true? Is there any info out there on how much he really made?

Also with the price of sprinter vans nowadays hes going to have to raise a lot more than $25k haha.

Homeless camps everywhere, and I mean everywhere (even in posh Pearl district) and driving I-5 or 84 is like going down a homeless alleyway...endless graffiti, tents and trash.

Still lots of good bike infrastructure and public transit though.

@kabanosipyvo: I think as there last year and can confirm this statement. Graffiti all along the interstate, homeless camps right on side of the interstate, in the medians of surface streets and literally blocking sidewalks and trash everywhere! 1. the health, happiness, and fortunes of a person or group.
2. statutory procedure or social effort designed to promote the basic physical and material well-being of people in need.
As one of the most wealthy nations in the world, America fails miserably in being a “welfare nation”. Pretty much the exact opposite.
  • 5 4
@TannerValhouli: God no, would you? Bit socialist isn't it?
  • 27 4
@SterlingArcher: Lol you're far from a welfare nation. Always funny to read what Americans think of themselves, while the rest of the world laughs/watches in horror.
  • 8 1
@TannerValhouli: Of course not! Especially not if asking other people for their money would just come handy to cover the cost for some toys.

In the world where children are suffering because they are hungry, or sick and while being killed by grown ups bombs it's utterly disgusting asking money for some toys.
It doesn't mean that someone wouldn't or shouldn't give you some of his money. It means that if that someone gives you the money, maybe he'll decide not to give it to someone who really needs it
  • 8 0
@TannerValhouli: No. I would be a literal millionaire (as Palmer is) and (in addition to having insurance) I would be able to replace a basic van and a couple of bikes.

  • 5 1
@SterlingArcher: *laughs in free healthcare. Idiot.
  • 40 8
@SterlingArcher: In Scandinavia we pretty much saw the USA as libertarian/fascist on the political spectrum. You have no social safety net and provide your citizens with very little for their tax, yet insist on a near worship of the flag and associated iconography. The idea of getting children to pledge their allegiance to a nation every day is genuinely disturbing to the rest of the world.
  • 17 4
I think what the commentor is speaking to is the public assistance system for people out of work in the US which is commonly referred to as “Welfare”. This is a public service department of the US that many feel encourages people on it not to work rather than to go find a job so that they don’t need assistance. Many feel it misses the mark of helping people get a k on their feet and self sufficient again, resulting in people staying on it, and/or hiding income to stay on it for generations. When people talk about the “welfare state” in the US they are usually referring to the growing number of people who use the system as a career choice and the Welfare system itself which many feel is set up to encourage this behavior rather than help people and promote actions and teach skills to successfully renter the workforce.

  • 6 5
@Jackaboo: libertarianism/fascism??? What does one even have to do with the other?
  • 6 1
 @NERyder: I assumed so!
Australia is no different, but we call these people dole bludgers.
But, the issue in America and Australia is that welfare is insufficient to actually make a difference and just reinforces intergenerational dependence. It’s not welfare, it’s oppression.
  • 6 1
@Mike-Jay: I don’t disagree entirely, but I think oppression is an overstatement. The services often help people get back on their feet and can work. The problem is like any big system that supports a lot of workers had a population tends to protect its own interests and grow rather then succeed and be marginalized.

The hardest thing in the world for humans to achieve is balance. A nuanced position maybe the second hardest thing to achieve. So most of these institutions either get rampantly abused or defeat some of the purpose of their existence based on their approach focusing too much on protecting their own institution. In either cases it’s easy to point out the flaws. However, I do think it is a tough thing to get right.

When I was a child we had to go on welfare for a couple of years as my father left and my sister was really sick. My mom had to work three different part time jobs and have my aunt move in with us to make enough to get off welfare and balance taking care of us. As soon as she started working all benefits stopped. At the same time we had neighbors where both parents worked under the table and still collected till their kids were grown.

So I can Understand the frustrations on both sides of the issue. The system doesn’t support those who want to work, and it rewards those who cheat it and abuse it. I am sure it is like this in most first world countries

  • 3 0
@NERyder: oppression might be an overreach, but this is pink bike!

It's a hugely complicated problem, and some countries have tried different things with varying success (Universal Basic Income, etc).

Your last statement pretty much sums it up "The system doesn’t support those who want to work, and it rewards those who cheat it and abuse it." You'll always get people who abuse any system (just watch the wealthy avoid paying tax), but I believe welfare could (and should) do a better job at supporting this who want to work.

Maybe you have not been to Portland. The cops don't actually arrest people there. That would be traumatizing.

@nskerb: I honestly don't understand how people keep voting for Democrats in cities like San Fran and Portland. San Diego elected a republican and eliminated homelessness in a matter of years. The whol republicans are evil psychopathy some people come out with is crazy. People actively choosing to vote against their own interests as they like to say about Trump voters....

@humoroususername: Did you see Portlandia? Before I lived in Portland I thought it was a funny show. Then I lived in portland for a few years and it seemed more like a documentary.

  • 20 7
@humoroususername: did Tucker Carlson tell you that???
  • 17 0
@stonant: um, the police in PDX are not lazy. They are understaffed by 127 positions and are working overtime in most cases. Just for context - in 2012 we has over 1000 on staff now less than 800.

Portland is a big city, leaving a box truck un attended in ANY major city (especially and un marked old truck) is a risk. Could have happened in Phoenix, Miami, LA, Oakland, Seattle, etc. Not saying Palmer is fool or dumb, but it was just a risk and some a-holes stole it.

What isn’t being said here is the a-holes fled, the cops laud sown spikes, the tuck keep going and they crashed into another car and hit to pedestrians. So OTHER people other than Palmer were either hurt (the peda) or lost their car. Palmer is not the one who took the biggest hit here.

@Corinthian: I just youtubed a few videos of him. He seems pretty annoying and partisan. Can't help but feel your description of him is OTT though. None of the videos I just watched seemed too crazy. Is he one of these guys people are told to hate like Jordan Peterson but then don't really know why they hate him? He's one of the only other people I've heard people be so angry about and basically everything they claim about him is false.

That said, this Carlson guy is a journalist working for 24 hour news so he may very well be a scumbag like most in tha industry.

Shaun, you're a marketable dude with a huge reputation. You can't get a single bit of sponsorship? I loved the Miserable Champion documentary, I can see you been through some hard times. I would pay $$$ to have a ride day with you, maybe think about some other ways to raise bucks?
  • 6 1
The guy makes nearly half a million a year and his mate is setting up a go fund page, crazy!
  • 10 8
 If anyone cares...

Shaun has struggled with mental health and substance issues for most of his career. A little respect is in order here from all the commenters. Napalm is a legend of our sport and others. He is also a human being that has fallen on hard times. Sad to see the level of care and respect he has earned from the Pinkbike crew. He is not rich and is a good person. I'm sure they could have put all that in the article but Shaun would not want that. His life has not been easy and the sports and how he approached them assisted him in managing his own personal demons.

Shaun Palmer has earned respect and a little compassion from the fans of DH/Slalom racing. If he did not need the support there is no f'n way this would be happening.

I can't imagine he wanted this to go public, that means he really needs it. Show some respect. #rantover

@C4coach My thoughts exactly, man! Chapeau!
  • 8 2
 Sorry, but this is lame!
A guy literally squandering away millions of dollars because of ignorance, substance abuse and living the good life doesn’t deserve to get money because his toys got stolen.
And believe me, mental problems have nothing to do with away a fortune. So your fan rant is superfluous at best and a slap in the face of every average Joe with mental problems doing his job and struggling everyday without doing drugs at worst.
Palmer is, in the end, responsible for losing all those bucks he made.

 To all the haters:
Insurance on a vehicle will not cover tools, motorcycles, or bicycles contained there in (especially if those things are of any value). Tool insurance is pretty ridiculous (if you can find someone who will write a policy) and often ends at your shop/garage door. Vintage dirt bikes are almost impossible to insure at their current value (especially after the last couple of years) and even harder to replace.
Finally, no one is forcing anyone to pay into this; the guy is asking for help. If you don’t want to help just walk away, no harm no foul. If you prefer to sneer at Shawn realize that your envy is showing and that you (and your karma) are still welcome to walk away. Hopefully none of you never have to know what it’s like to get cleaned out and left hanging.
