chill with the "He's old and just wants attention". If that was so he'd do some douchey publicity stunt, not actually put out helpful content that doesn't make him look cool. He's just trying to give back in a practical way.
Gwin has forgotten more than most people here know. Everyone is acting like he suddenly sucks because he's now top 40 instead of top 10. IMO older riders like Gwin, Hill, Hannah, and Minaar probably have more actual bike skill than riders like Pierron, Iles, or Daprela. (EDIT: This is just a function of experience.) It's just that it is easier to stay in top 10 shape and risk crashing when you are 23.
@Biologybossman: No, of course not. But this is not 100% altruistic either. Do you think Remi is making content just for your entertainment, out of the goodness of his heart? Please. To Gwin's credit, he doesn't seem to be pushing product.
@ReformedRoadie: LOL. Gwin out there hustling for a hundred bucks of YouTube revenue! Funny guy.
And if you can’t tell the difference between Remy’s content and this there’s no hope for you. In fact, Remy’s content is exactly the sort of thing he would make if he was trying to look cool, which was OP’s point. Not some “boring” cone drill that actually helps people ride better.
Obviously he benefits from this video, but he had a choice between this and a LOT of things that would help his bottom line more. You can’t be like “That trail builder isn’t giving back, he’s still getting a workout and a new trail to ride!”
@Blackhat: I made no comparison between Remi and Gwyn's content...just the fact that both generate revenue. Remi clearly has talent, that most PBers dream they had, but something like arm pump kept him from racing at WC level... Gwin's accomplishments racing are unquestionable. He had a lengthy run where he was damn near unbeatable.
Gwin is just starting to build his YouTube following. He has 45K followers. Remi has 275k. He seems to be making more than the odd hundred bucks.
@Blackhat: It’s got over 120k views on YouTube alone. Which the internet claims to be worth $500-$2500. That’s huge exposure for his sponsors and his bike brand and after doing another google estimates his earnings between $750k to 1m per year.
@thenotoriousmic: I clearly acknowledged that he gets something out of this. But it’s peanuts for Gwin, and asking “is he donating the revenue” is just a petty, small minded way to dismiss someone who dares to appreciate that one of the best riders in the world is making content that helps us become better riders.
@ReformedRoadie: if you weren’t making a comparison why bring him up?
Obviously you can make good money from a massive YouTube following. That doesn’t mean it’s anything but peanuts to Gwin, nor does it mean we can’t appreciate that one of the best riders in WC history is publishing very good skill videos for said peanuts.
@Blackhat: $500-$2500 a day is not peanuts for a days work when you’re due to retire in the next five years. $750k divided by 365 days equal $2k so if the estimates are right that’s about his going rate for a days work anyway.
@Blackhat: How big do you think Gwin's next contract will be? Do you think maybe it is also part of him building a brand, bringing value to sponsors and staying relevant as his WC DH career winds down?
I brought Remi up as an example that you can generate serious revenue from a YouTube channel...and he doesn't have the cache of being one of the best DH riders of all time. I think you are naïve to think Gwin is just doing this out of the goodness of his heart. You also do not seem to have a clue about how much potential money can be made via a large YouTube following.
I respect his past racing accomplishments, but am not 'in the corner' with any of Gwin's Ivermectin promoting, closet Trump supporting, religion babbling nonsense.
@DoubleCrownAddict: you seem to use pb for in your profile words "social warrior". sounds like you don't like people that don't share your views..... good luck finding riding buddies or anyone else that share ALL your views
@jarrod801: Great point on All The Belief. Im not a fan of Gwin’s beliefs but I don't need to be - Im not here for that and neither is he… if he wants to guzzle horse meds for a disease: fine. Im here to hear him talk cornering and he does that. I could give a s*** about his horse or religious pills - talk bikes and Im good
@DoubleCrownAddict: Agreed - but I just don't care for all this BS here - I just want bikes. I see this type of medieval BS everywhere. Can we just keep it the f*ck off our bike site instead of letting it erode everything fun? Its a vid about turning - he's not a Nazi asset, he just has his own beliefs (dumb as anyone thinks they are). Why drag politics into every f*cking thing? Whatever it touches turns to shit.
PB commenters just mad he's wasting their time, because they already know more and are better riders than AG.
If Bryceland or Fairclough were putting out this same content they'd all love it though
Bryceland was beating Gwin in his prime while not even trying and sitting down in his world champs runs. So you'd be wise to fucking listen to him attentively when he gives you tips about riding a bike. You better put some respect on his fucking name
AG is putting out some of the better skills videos that I’ve seen. He breaks it down so clearly and explains things super well. Between him and Ben Cathro…I’ve been able to make more progress in a short amount of time. Better than some in person courses that I’ve taken. Thx
Loving the content Gwin! Thanks for all the great tips.
Been thinking for a while now that riding in environments like Southern California and this are probably part of the reason why he has slipped so much. Getting up to BC or spending some time in the Alps would suit him well. Although that must get a lot harder with a family.
I missed what happened at the race besides him not being close to the top. He crashed in practice and couldn't get up to speed? I didn't see much else.... Someone enlighten me please.
yup, did a big belly flop/superman onto a rock. Probably sore as hell. Ended up in 33rd, which sounds bad for him, but some perspective...The uplift was so slow it sounds like he got 2 or 3 practice laps. Mark Wallace go 40th, He beat Remi Thierion (usually a top 10ish guy), and was only 2.5sec off Minnaar.
@CSdirt: Yep. I think the lack of uplift and practice really disadvantaged some guys (Minaar and Gwin) while giving the pin it and send it youngsters a better shot. They're riding on instinct and guts whereas other riders are riding on puzzling and technique, which requires more track time.
I've listened to about 4 different post-race podcasts, and they all were pretty chafed about the uplift situation. Sounds like it was ridiculous.
There's another one that I'd say is THE #1 thing, and that's using your eyes. It's said so much that it's pretty much a cliche. "Look through the corner.", "Look where you want to go", "Eyes up!", or some variation thereof, is something we've all told beginners, or maybe even a mantra we repeat to ourself, when we're pushing the edge of our comfort zone. So simple, but yet so hard to do consistently.
Bike, skis, snowboard, motorcycle, whatever, if anyone tells you they've never ever target-fixated on a rock, rut, apex of a surprise decreasing radius turn, etc, and ran wide, blown the corner, crashed into the object they were trying to avoid, etc. you just know they're lying.
@Biologybossman: Still hiding? Why don't you have a bike? Why don't you have a face? Just another fishy smelling ghost poster, we can all only imagine how you must feel having such a hairy vagina for a face...
@Biologybossman: still afraid to show your face? Hahahahahaaaa, show us your face, oh right you don't have the balls, sad. Just another POS armchair loser... go ride your dildo, cracker. And the look in the mirror and see an internet poser,
I know Gwin has had a ton of wins in his career, but I feel like there are some new sheriff's in town. He kind of acts like he's still top dog, but the results haven't really shown that... The real winning formula? Baguettes.
How is giving advice to people are winning tens of world cups acting as if he's top dog? He's still better than >99% of people on a bike despite the fact that there are people even quicker than him now
Can you elaborate on how he "acts like he is still top dog"? I haven't heard him say anything putting himself above other riders. I've never found him the most charismatic guy but there has never been any denying of his ability to ride a bike, train or perform in a race situation. I appreciate these videos he is making and think he has a lot to share with others. If not for you- no stress- but if your assumption is that he is sharing some of what he has learned and been passionate about for a couple decades to fuel his ego- not sure I agree.
Alright alright, I am being too hard on Gwin. I think I saw a video a year or two back of him kind of trash talking Minaar and got a bad taste in my mouth since then, but that is probably unfair. Definitely not trying to take away from the success that he has had.
To Gwin's credit, he doesn't seem to be pushing product.
And don't forget to smash that downvote button!
The world isn't either 100% altruistic or completely selfish, there is plenty of nuance in between.
And if you can’t tell the difference between Remy’s content and this there’s no hope for you. In fact, Remy’s content is exactly the sort of thing he would make if he was trying to look cool, which was OP’s point. Not some “boring” cone drill that actually helps people ride better.

Another study actually came out yesterday proving Ivermectin is useless for Covid, Gwin is a typical right wing knucklehead.

Understandable that Gwin has to resort to making mediocre riding advice videos for profit now that he is no longer a competitive racer.
I've listened to about 4 different post-race podcasts, and they all were pretty chafed about the uplift situation. Sounds like it was ridiculous.
Step 2: Profit!
1) Weight your tires
2) Lean the bike over so you're on the corner knobs
That's its. The correct body position will come naturally if you lean your bike over weight tires as needed.
Actually I think Gwin has a video on that too...
