Press Release: Women In Cycling Festival

Even the most inclusive cycling clubs can often struggle to encourage more women to join and get involved. In 2020, the University of Sheffield Cycling Club ran The Women In Cycling Festival, aimed at bringing cyclists in Sheffield together, students and non-students alike.

When you realise how many like-minded people there are - whether that be road cyclists, mountain bikers or cycle commuters - the idea of joining a club suddenly seems less intimidating. It becomes more about finding new people who share your passion for bikes and the outdoors, which gives access to new trails and different disciplines.

After a successful day of networking, bike riding and celebrating last year, we’re keeping the festival alive by organising a virtual competition. The competition will raise money for the Ride For Charlie Foundation which inspires and encourages young people to ride and race bikes and follow their dreams.

The point of this competition is to encourage everyone to push themselves, whether that be on their own or with a friend, to use the week of International Women's Day (8th-15th of March 2021) to get out on your bike! Set yourself a personal challenge, this can be absolutely anything; a 100km ride, Everest challenge, the process of learning to wheelie, ride every day for a week, the list goes on. The idea is to do something fun, get outside and push yourself and each other.

Everyone who enters the competition will be entered into a raffle to win some brilliant prizes from Decathlon, WTB, Velovixen, 18Bikes, Cotic, Spok’d and more. However, the best prizes will be handpicked by us; going towards the ones we find most impressive or most inspiring!

To enter; visit the Women In Cycling Festival site and donate your £3 entrance fee. You will be asked to upload some video footage, or even a photo or two, and with it you’ll need to write a short sentence or two explaining why you chose the challenge and what it was exactly.

Anyone can enter, so get the dates in your diary and get involved.
