Start List for the Nove Mesto XC World Cup 2021
@bohemi: Thanks, I'd forgotten to mention there's a temporary, different UCI points allocation system being applied during the Olympic selection period due to Covid - ie it's a total nightmare!

Final Results: Nove Mesto XC World Cup 2021
@dolores: Lets hope he gets a place! The road worlds were held in Harrogate in 2019, less that 10 miles from his house - so he was always going choose that over MTB worlds TBH.

Results: XCC Short Track - Nove Mesto XC World Cup 2021
@enduroFactory: Olympic MTB qualification rules are ridiculously complicated, but if I've read them right; so long as Pidders gets another decent result in XCO this w/e (on top of 2nd in XCC), then GB men will have moved high enough in the XC world rankings to guarantee him a place. ie he'll have ridden himself into the Olympics, rather than being reliant on spare unused places of other nations.

Start List for the Nove Mesto XC World Cup 2021
@Lolo-the-frenchie: That's exactly how it works (I looked it all up the other day!) Top 40 riders in current World Cup standings get to race the XCC on Friday night - start position is based on their current world cup standing. For XCO race on Sunday, first 24 places on the grid are determined by Friday night's XCC results, then for all other riders, their gridding position is based on their UCI standing. For example - Gerhard Kerschbaumer is ranked 17th on current world cup standings, so he was allowed to ride the XCC race and started in 17th position on the grid (ie 3rd row). He finished 28th in the XCC race on Friday night - ie outside the top 24 - so he hasn't earned a place on the front 3 rows of the XCC race start this week. However, he is the highest UCI ranked rider in the rest of the field (4th in UCI standings), so he gets the 25th start position in XCC race. Stephane Tempier is the next highest UCI ranked rider (11th in UCI standings) so he starts in 26th position etc etc.

UCI rule 247.7654435786 iiii c states: Roadie beats MTBer, MTBer beats CXer, CXer beats Roadie - with exception of VdP* variation. (*VdP beats all).

Tom Pidcock May Miss Out on the Olympics & 4 Other Things We Learned From the Albstadt XC World Cup 2021
@Starch-Anton: Yeah, it's something like 50 riders at the Olympics - maybe have a qualifying heat to get in the final, like other Olympic sports? That said, expanding XCO would probably mean reducing budget for other Olympic cycling disciplines, so depends on how much IOC prioritise XCO - less than track and road I suspect...

Tom Pidcock May Miss Out on the Olympics & 4 Other Things We Learned From the Albstadt XC World Cup 2021
Good point - Covid and his first year riding Elite have largely created the problem, but it's not like he wasn't trying to race MTB last year: after global spring lockdown he spent the summer racing MTB in Europe (before baby Giro and the road worlds), then rode and won all 3 top level U23 XCO races that took place in 2020 (2x Nove Mesto + World Champs). Designing a selection process that's fair on everyone is nigh on impossible - especially at the moment - but there's definitely something amiss if it's not possible for a top medal contending athlete to gain Olympic qualification during an Olympic year. Any which way - Nove Mesto is gonna be one hell of a battle this weekend!

Photo Epic: Hardpack Soundtrack - Albstadt XC World Cup 2021
@nozes: They are hoping to get an Olympic wildcard slot for Pidcock, like Sagan received for XCO in Rio. Behind the scenes, they're bound to have sounded out the UCI on the odds of getting this, before deciding to commit half his season to chasing MTB at the Olympics rather than the road.
