Inside We Are One Composites: Hand Laid in Canada

Dec 21, 2019 at 15:17
by Andy Vathis

There’s a saying that goes, "If you want something done right, do it yourself." That is exactly what’s happening in BC with a small yet passionate group of people going by the name of We Are One Composites.

The company’s humble beginnings started with owner Dustin Adams’ decision to leave a job in a similar industry that wasn’t up to his standards. As a result, the "proud-to-be Canadian" brand was born, with Adams laying up carbon fiber strands by hand to provide quality wheel building from his hometown in Kamloops. The vision was set, a business plan drafted, and the product was officially put into motion in early 2017. Since then, We Are One has grown as a company that now offers multiple high-end carbon wheel options and most recently a bar and stem combo.

Dustin’s history on two wheels spans a few decades, with him entering his first race in 1994. The competitive journey began with a local race series in Kamloops, which eventually took him all the way into the top spots on the NORBA circuit in 2002 before a fourth-place at a World Cup. His experiences as a top tier athlete arguably put down a solid foundation and helped form the mindset for his transition into entrepreneurship.

After an earlier failure to lay up carbon wheels at a high standard and consistency in China in a previous partnership, Dustin's hunger for success naturally drove him to the creation of We Are One Composites. In pursuit of the do it yourself process, Adams left that manufacturer to create his own brand that does everything in-house. This allowed for 100% ownership of the process, proper quality control, and prototype testing which could be done whenever need be, within the same facility, for immediate feedback. It was a huge benefit to the entire operation and a luxury many other companies simply don’t have.

bigquotesThe biggest differentiator for a company our size vs others is our ability to create, pivot, and produce at a much faster rate with pinpoint accuracy. We behave like a rapid prototyping house, but also have the tools to scale a project into production really fast. This allows us to prove out concepts and to determinations quite quickly – not wasting time on something that isn’t going to become successful.Dustin Adams

Moving forward, Dustin and his team have secured a much larger workshop up the road as they’ve outgrown the current one in just under three years. The added space will be an asset to their expansion and offer a long list of benefits for the employees, including a pump track.

bigquotesI set out to design a molding process where we could remove more than 50% of the labor and any environmentally damaging additions to the process that were being used. Our process needed to be able to sell rims that were ready to use right out of the mold. No chance for repairs or patching.Dustin Adams

bigquotesWe do not paint, sand, fill, patch, or doctor any of our rims. The rims come from the mold to the drilling room for the spoke holes to be drilled, and up to the wheel building shop for assembly. We cut down massively on our environmental impact with no added VOC's or chemicals for painting, and keep the costs of production lower due to the reduction in labor needed post-mold.Dustin Adams

The We Are One Dealer Weekend

As a form of dealer appreciation and wanting to meet with some of the people that make their success possible, the crew at We Are One hosted a weekend of riding, camping, and good times in Kamloops. It began with a shop tour and, to no one's surprise, ended with a sketchy hill climb complete with kegs and other obstacles.

So a comment on the quality and customer support.

I’ve been running agents for 2.5 summers now. Stiff, responsive, handle great. In that time I have smashed the hell out of them. Bc enduro series, Pemberton and whistler trips. Beatings. I’ve dented and killed a set of BA30 chromags to the point of needing replacement in that same time on the spare bike. The agents have been straight and true. I did crack one when I cut the face out of my tire mid rock roll, lost all air pressure and rolled out the bottom on straight rim. I sent Dustin a picture, he called it still structurally ok. I threw in a tube and rode out the day no problem. Monday he had me a fresh rim laced up by noon.

Short take, I’m sold on their rims for life.

My buddy broke one and they had a replacement shipped in less than a week. Solid dudes.
  • 6 0
I was looking to get a set of their rims just based on the price and the fact that they're made in Canada. I sent them a few questions and was impressed with how responsive, helpful, and friendly Dustin was. Can't wait to build up a set next year!

Just got my pair this year and while haven't had a chance to truly thrash them, they have honestly been a dream to ride at this point! So far they've mostly seen winter riding in the Rockies on a hardtail but are barely showing any signs of wear. I guess I have to pickup Da Package now too Wink
  • 4 0
Ditto, had mine for almost 2 years now but have not had a single issue. Absolutely flawless craftsmanship out of the box. Still straight and just a couple minor scratches. Haven't needed to contact customer support which I cannot say that about much anything else on my bike. I see Da Bar in my life soon.... I'm sold on their rims for life.

Exact same experience. I'm quite a torture test for my rims. When I cracked one, the warranty turn-around was so fast, I was able to abandon my backup bike plan and keep riding my primary. Depending on what comes on my wife's next bike, I might give her mine and order another set.

I love the versatility: I've used them to create an ultra light climb setup and I've used them to offset the weight penalty of burly tires.

My only beef is that I prefer quiet DT 240 hubs over noisy stuff from I9, so I'll have to make that custom order change again.

Do carbon wheels ever go untrue? I thought they just crack
  • 1 0
@elephantintheroom: yes they can, due to uneven spoke pressure from something getting jammed in the spokes. once re-tentiioned correctly they are back to arrow straight unlike alloy.
  • 1 0
@elephantintheroom: my DT Swiss XMC 30 rear wheel came out of true when a stick jammed in between the spokes and the seatstay and stopped the wheel from turning at about 20mph. Surprisingly, no broken spokes. A few turns of the spoke wrench and they are true again. So, yea, it can happen, but its pretty hard to get it to happen.

I got my we are ones this year to go with the new carbon bike. Im a full darkside convert. Used to be aluminium all the way but these really are some fantastic wheels. Stiff, strong, light and (relatively) cheap. You really can have your cake and eat it!

I have a set of Agent rims from one of their first batches 2 1/2 years ago and they're still great. I broke 2 carbon rims in just the summer before. Super impressed with how the still look and they handle great.

Awesome, I would like to see what the quadrants look like and then how the layup is done to combine them.

I bought a set this year. Perfect wheels. Appreciate Canadian bikes/parts and my New Years resolution is to not buy anything made in China for 2020.

Anything bike related or just anything? Cuz the latter sounds impossible
  • 33 0
@knightmarerider: anything at all. I may not be much of a consumer this year. Let’s see if it kills me????

@Jvisscher: Good luck and god speed!

Yeah a friend got these wheels about 18 months ago. He rides a lot on the mostly harsh Arizona trails. Not one problem. He loves them. I have had and seen other carbon wheels break, which any rim can, but these seem to hold up to the challenge. Good for them for developing an efficient process, reduce negative outputs in the process, and end up with such great product.

Waiting for my Agent I9 101 wheels to get here. Stoked!

@dlxah: Good for you then. I don't have a preference on the origin of a product, I don't see too much outside the physical nature of the product/
  • 11 1
@knightmarerider: To each their own, but I personally put some value in knowing my money isn't going to a tyrannical government with virtually no environmental regulations. I'm also fortunate enough to be a little more selective with my purchases, which I understand isn't the case for everybody.
  • 38 9
 @dlxah:

'a tyrannical government with virtually no environmental regulations'

Isn't that your current government? Wink
  • 5 0
@dlxah: That's a rather hypocritical statement you just made since China banned import of foreign garbage not long ago and we are sitting on waste mountains right now.
By the standard of shipping garbage far away so we don't see them we are very environmental friendly.
  • 7 0
@PilchardTV: While the US government is far from perfect, I think it's quite a stretch to call it a tyranny.
@knightmarerider: Fair point. I'm aware of that issue and I think it's despicable. (Much respect to We Are One for making a serious effort to minimize unnecessary waste!) Again, the US definitely isn't perfect either, but if you think China's environmental regulations and enforcement of those regulations is on par with the US's (or in this case Canada's), then I really don't know what to tell you.
  • 2 2
@dlxah: in this case the very best we can do is buy these wheels. Maybe Chinese wheels will be better later, or maybe their politics. But for right now both are better in Canada. I lived in the USA for 10 years and there is so little structural difference between the two countries because of Canada raises taxes we all move south. If we lower them a lot it won’t attract many people since most Americans can’t find Canada on a map. So many things stay effectively similar.
  • 4 2
@Jvisscher: One time in SoCal I went into a bike shop to get Intel on trails. The girl asked where we were from and we said Canada. She said 'oh I had to take a ferry there once, I think it was called Columbia of British or something?' LOL

@PilchardTV: You Canadapersons sure do get arrogant after hundreds of years of the USA protecting you. You're like the little yapping kickme dog hiding behind the legs of its owner.
  • 8 0
@JohanG: Which is why I moved to Canada. I get free healthcare for the same tax dollars that I used to spend on military living in Guam. When the benefits change, I’ll move to where it is most advantageous for me again. And we are sincerely sorry for burning down the White House during those hundreds of years you were protecting us!
  • 5 0
Same here. I've been trying not to buy anything from China for around 6 months. If you take your time, you will discover many options that are made in Europe/Canada/US. With bikes, it's quite easy to build a 100% european bike at least. With computers, it's super difficult though.
  • 1 0
@nowherenear: even other countries like Vietnam and Thailand worst case. It's fairly easy to avoid China. Just don't buy for cheap and buy for quality.
  • 1 0
@nowherenear: What did you get for fork/shock/drivetrain? I can only think of Intend, EXT and Rohloff or Pinion. Once you add Japan and north america to the mix a 100% bike build is easy indeed (at least with Swiss purchasing power ;-) )
  • 1 0
@Ttimer: most of that is Taiwan which isn't part of China.
  • 1 3
@PilchardTV: All of these Canadians virtue signaling. Have you not been to the oil sands? or to any of the massive clearcut operations? Good luck finding any old-growth in a few years...
  • 4 1
@SvenNorske: have you been to the oil sands? Old growth in Canada is documented and protected. The u.s. is way worse at regulating their oil industry and forestry industry. Go and do some research before shitposting
  • 1 0
@Ttimer: I'm planning a 100% european bike at the moment. Your correct, Intend, Ext, Rohloff and Pinion are good choices. Rotor make a 1x13 drivetrain in spain and Ingrid will come up with a derailleur soon.
There are some more European suspension brands such as BOS, CR Conception, FAST, Bright Racing Shocks, German Answer and so on.
  • 3 0
@PilchardTV: The way most of the world operates is on a whole other level. It isn't safe to live in a lot of places that make most of our stuff, just on air pollution alone. I don't think it's an exageration to say that the majority of people and companies on the planet dump their waste straight to the nearest river, and on to the ocean. River = garbage + toxic waste dump. The concept is hard to swallow. We are just totally blind to all of this in our comfortable little bubble, and have uncompetitively high standards considering the lengths we go to here. I'm surprised to see this startup, and I really do wish them the best considering what they are up against. I'll be lining up for a set of Agent 29er when the time is right. The biggest difference a person can make is to vote for what is important with their money, and keep it as close to home as possible.

I go through 2 rear rims per year. Wondering if getting a $450 carbon rim will ultimately end up cheaper than buying $200 worth of alu rims per year.

The answer is probably yes, especially given the lifetime warranty. Seeing all the positive feedback on PB and reading this article and positive comments section has me thinking of buying a We Are One rim next.

I killed 3 alloy rims last year. Got We Are One wheels at the end of the season (Outlier model) and haven't had to touch then once. That includes riding in Whistler bike park and then a month long road trip riding almost daily in the US, then getting a flat yesterday and riding the rest of the way down the trail (it was technical and chunky) with nothing but my cushcore to protect the rim from being trashed. Still perfect.

I have a pair of Agents that are a few years old. I recently shorted a drop and hit my rear wheel so hard on a sharp rocks that it made my immediately get off my bike to examine the damage.

The photographer there was sure the wheel was toast too.

Nope. The noise was the wheel actually breaking the rock, not the other way around, as a rim shape groove was left in it. The wheel was true and the tire didn’t puncture. Also a special shout out to Cush Core!

Sent them my hub and had a new wheel laced in less than two days from when that arrived, just had to pay for shipping. Zero downtime... impressive!

We Are One and their rims are the real deal! Broke a rim landing on a pile of rocks (my bad - low tire pressure), Replacement rim came out within days - no questions asked. Since then zero issues including riding out the last stage of a race with a blown tire. I didn't even need to true them up. As if you needed anymore reason to buy these rims. Keep up the good work!

I love these wheels and the stickers are awesome too... on my toolbox. Didn’t last one power washing on the rims! Much preferred to the RaceFace clown face ???? stickers on the wheels that came with the bike.

Congrats to Dustin and We Are One on a killer year! Great products and super rad people who support the local riding community. All the best in 2020!

Best upgrade I’ve ever done to my bike. I was not expecting an improvement in ride quality. Improvement was night and day. It feels like they dampen vibration but track better compared to alloy wheels .

Would love these wheels but right now it’s just not in the budget. Maybe one day I’ll be able to ride these sweet wheels. Haven’t really wanted carbon wheels till I saw this a few months ago

Let the rumours begin...I foresee a WeAreOne co-designed high-pivot enduro bike with Forbidden Bikes (Druid) handlaid/built in Canada.
  • 1 0
Felt obligated to comment since the agent's have been so good to me. At 250 lbs kitted up... never had an issue with these at the bike park or anywhere else. Excellent product, service and price.

After hearing that Canadians took Donald trump out of home alone movie, that is the most childish thing I’ve heard of lately, That will show him ! It sux paying your fair share huh!

I hear these guys are really into the e-bike scene........ Hopefully the come out with an e-bike specific rim soon! and anodized oil slick bars!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow

Put a set of We Are One Agents on my Guerrilla Gravity Smash with a Push ElevenSix shock. Badass wheels on a badass bike.

with an MRP fork? ...any other components produced in N. America? Wink
  • 1 0
@chacou: I wanted to go for the MRP fork- but decided to go for the Lyrik instead. I also have an I9 A35 stem on the bike.
  • 1 0
@chacou: Also looking at the WA1 Da Package bar/stem combo.
  • 3 0
@timbrewolff: Ha, yeah I was just looking at Da Package on their website right now. Looks very nice only I wish there's a 35mm rise bar option
  • 1 0
@chacou: can confirm the Ribbon/WR1 Agent combo is a pretty sick ride.

Something magical happens to my bikes when my 29r insiders go on... Maybe they are laced with Maple Syrup and some serious Canadian awesomeness ????
  • 1 0
Agents on both my MTBs-the Yeti 29er and the Chromag 27.5. Amazing wheels, amazing ride, and proud to support Dustin and the crew. Can’t recommend them enough.

Similar boat as you DrPete. Insiders on my Druid and Agents on my Honzo. About to throw down on some Unions. We live in good times.
  • 1 0
@mtnbkrmike: True true. It’s never been easier or more fun to vote with your wallet. WR1 wheels are a total no-brainer.
  • 1 0
C'mon Dustin. We are all waiting for a We Are One/Forbidden hand laid in Canada, longer travel, joint venture... Perfect 1-2 punch alongside my Druid...

Best bike related purchase I’ve made! Total piece of mind when it comes to my agents. and my wheels aren’t shaped like a stop sign at the end of the season!
  • 1 0
Made in Canada. Nothing g but happy customers. Or made in Asia. Cross your fingers quality control was on top of things that day.
  • 2 0
I'd love to hear about the newer Union rims. Are they that much better than the Agents?
  • 3 0
I was hand laid in canada once. I can attest to the high quality.
  • 1 0
What'd that cost in American dollars?
  • 1 0
I just went to their website. I'm blown away they can bring a wheelset of this quality to the market at this price. I'm definitely buying a set of agents.
  • 2 0
Such a sick company. 100% true and loyal.
  • 2 0
One big family , epic work , well deserved praise

Are these available in Europe? Cannot find them. I always like a company like We are one. Like this article.
  • 1 0
Yes check out We Are One UK for European sales
  • 1 0
 @creationcycles:
So, effectively, by the end of next month, they are not available in the EU any more.
  • 1 0
@hubertje-ryu: no not at all, the UK may be leaving the EU but doesn’t stop sales to EU countries does it? Unless you know of some ban on selling that no one else does...
  • 1 0
Love my Agents too. Can’t work out why they don’t seem to have caught on in the UK ‘cos they are the dogs bollox.
  • 1 0
Heck of a reputation on here. Now and in past articles. Guess I need to build a new bike worthy of your wheels
  • 1 0
Have the bars & stem. Very nice. Would love the wheels too..... Saving.

Hand laid - unfortunately the story of my life at the moment.
  • 1 0
Still rocking my Agent rims with more than a year of use. One of the best products I've bought and used for my bike.
  • 1 0
Honest building, fair price, and apparently all happy with their products, a very rare exception in industry.
  • 1 0

Finally an article for the WAO fanbois!
  • 4 0
Yeah, small rider owned companies that make great products at competitive prices suck.
  • 1 0
@DrPete: Ah, sarcasm. I like WR1 and their products.
  • 2 0
@JohanG: Sorry. Broken sarcasm meter this morning. Haha.
