We didn’t have long to wait for the second round of the 2021 XC World Cup season after the opener in Albstadt, Germany last weekend. The short track honours on Friday night went to Haley Batten and Mathieu van der Poel, the U23s then hit the track for their races the following day. Both races were wet and wild although it was last weekend’s winners Mona Mitterwallner and Carter Woods who proved to be the cream of the crop once again. Carter Woods opened up a gap of close to two minutes over Riley Amos who fended off Alexandre Balmer, Joel Roth and Simone Avondetto. The U23 women was a closer run competition with Ghost’s Caroline Bohe just two seconds back from Mitterwallner who then had Kata Blanka Vas, Puck Pieterse, and Harriet Harnden in behind her.

Track conditions hadn’t improved much overnight and with little to no rain falling through the day it began to dry out, albeit slowly. It would be difficult to read the conditions. That said, Loana Lecomte read them to absolute perfection and was the runaway winner once again pulling one minute and thirty-nine seconds out over Haley Batten who went one better than last week and finished second. Aussie Rebecca McConnell rode strong and composed to a comfortable third place with Pauline Ferrand Prevot recovering to fourth after her big crash in short track, Evie Richards rounded out the top five with her first Elite podium.

The writing was on the wall early in the men’s race with Thomas Pidcock and Mathieu van der Poel going bar to bar once again. It was the young Brit who would come out on top this time, sauntering to his first Elite World Cup win in only his second start. The gap back to Van der Poel was exactly a minute. Mathias Flueckiger slotted into third with Ondrej Cink in fourth which must be bittersweet - a home podium for the Czech racer, albeit with no fans. World Champ Jordan Sarrou took the final step on the box.

We’ve got a few weeks to wait for the next round in Leogang, but given how this season is shaping up you certainly won’t want to miss that one!

Tom Pidcock and MVDP going head to head over the next few years is going to be epic racing! The next Absalon vs. Shurter....
  • 10 0
...if they don't focus on the road only. Let's hope not.
  • 17 5
@nozes: We'll probably only see them on mountain bikes this year at the Olympics. I know that MVDP has said he plans to continue racing mtb, and he has the flexibility to set his own schedule because he has an ownership stake in Alpecin-Fenix, but Pidcock is owned and operated by the Ineos Global Destruction team. They're going to strip-mine as much positive press out of his talents as they can this year before they throw his entirely polluted corpse into the nearest vulnerable watershed. He'll be an irritatingly efficient member of the Ineo peloton smog machine for the Tour. My guess is he'll be Mikal Kwiatkoski 2.0.

If by head to head, you mean Pidcock continues to remain one podium step higher than MVDP. I never considered how freaking tall MVDP looks compared to Tom.

@Dem628: 5'7" 110lb vs 6'1" 165lb. Definitely makes a diff on a course like that. Those steep sections were brutal.

@wilsonians: w/kg rather then just weight is the key and the ability to recover quickly is very important in XC
  • 1 0
@wilsonians: Try closer to 130lbs. Pidcock is NOT 50kg.
  • 2 0
@LeDuke: Google search led me astray! You're right, 125lb give or take. Still, 40lb is a lot in the world of cycling.

Is putting grease on your chain and chainrings an actual thing? (well clearly it is as someone is doing it). Has anyone done this for a muddy race? I don't think I'd even put wet lube in my chain for a muddy race as I'd assume it would attract more crap but I guess it a makes sense that if its going to get muddy anyway you'd want a lube that would stick around.
  • 3 0
It’s old school Paris Roubaix road race thinking. Oil will get washed off by all the water and mud. And although water will provide some lubrication, if it dries out, you’ll have a dry chain. Grease will delay that for long enough.

Next year mud guards will be all the rage in XC
  • 4 0
In XC racing mud guards only accumulate mud and ultimately weigh the bike down. It also risks slowing wheel rotation if the mud is really thick. That's why most just put on some glasses and let the mud fly.

VDP is feeling the fatigue after taking his fourth elite men’s cyclo-cross world title and racing in the spring classics. Tom is probably peaking because his aim was qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. Both have 4 months of hard racing in their legs so in my view its incredible what they are both doing. The other XC boys need to step it up. The whole season is skewed because of Corona and the Olympics - which race do you peak for?

I also wonder if the short track race format gives an advantage to the younger riders who are likely to recover faster before the main XC race.

Loana looks like the real deal -she has the technical skills and fitness to compete at the highest level -will be interesting to see how everyone responds which can only mean entertaining racing.

While he's not in his best form, MvdP beat everybody who he beat in Nove Mesto in 2019; however, he is never going to beat a lightweight climber on courses with a few climbs - he can't defy physics. There must be 10-15+ kg difference in weight - climbing is all about W/Kg.

There were some big names far down the result sheet in the men's race. I cannot wait until Leogang to see who can turn that around.

And with the Conti X-king tires, he chose for more grip compared to lots of other riders. Interesting choice that worked well. Sure, they are still a semi-knob tire, but offer more bite than f.e. Maxxis Ikon.
  • 1 0
@jeroenk: Did he have X-king on the rear also or Race King?
  • 2 0
@jeroenk: I think you can compromise for increased rolling resistance if you know that you had the legs for it. More confidence on the slop, too.
  • 1 0
@PapaStone: Looks like X-King front and rear for this race. X-King/Race King combo last week. Even the X-King is a relatively fast rolling tire.
  • 4 0
@jeroenk: sometimes when it’s really wet the mud is super thin and your basically riding wet hard pack.
  • 1 0
@PapaStone: Looks like Conti CrossKing front and rear. Surprised that riders (like Nino) use the same tires (Aspen) in muddy conditions and super dry conditions. I belive Maxxis had a prototype race tire for muddy conditions a year ago, looking more like CrossKing. Has it gone missing and the only option from Maxxis is now the extreme Forekaster?

Did any of the Vittoria-riders use Barso (almost same thread as CrossKing) or did they all go with Mezcal?
