The XCO action in Albstadt kicked off with the U23 races on Saturday with both Line Burquier and Martin Vidaurre Kossmann taking back to back wins. Puck Pieterse and Sofie Pedersen ran Burquier the closest whilst Vidaurre Kossmann was followed home by Gustavo Xavier De Oliveira Pereira and Dario Lillo. Rebecca McConnell wasn't content with just the short track win here in Albstadt so dually delivered the XCO victory too with a calm and controlled performance in which she looked untouchable in the closing laps, pulling a 48-second advantage over Jenny Rissveds in second. Mona Mitterwallner's early step up to elites continues to go from strength to strength, she went 2 spots better than Brazil with third, ahead of Loana Lecomte and Alessandra Keller. The men's race initially had a sizable breakaway bunch fighting for the lead, it then began to get whittled down before Tom Pidcock blew the legs off everyone and span into the distance. Nino Schurter and Vlad Dascalu battled once more with Schurter coming out on top once more with Dascalu recovering from a stop in the tech zone. Titouan Carod and David Valero Serrano both had amazing rides and were rewarded with the final podium positions.

The pits have already been packed up and the XC World Cup circus rolls onto Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic for round three of the 2022 campaign this coming week. Check back on Friday for all the action from the short track race.

Great pics! Especially the one of Jenny getting distracted on the way to the podium

I'd probably get distracted by that too.

Always stop what you are doing to pet random dogs...with owner's permission.

Both races were great. It was rad to see Nino sending that stepdown "double" that everybody else was rolling.

Considering too the level of the other riders Vlad starting in DH.. and Pidcock loving to clear some gaps and drops on his spare time... you can imagine how big complicated that gap might be when no one else on the entire field even tried... Hats off, plus every single lap...

@PauRexs: that was a pretty sketchy double for sure, steep and rocky take off, landing on more steep and rocky. On a 20lbs. bike? No effing way.
Not the perfectly groomed jumps of Petropolis, that's for sure.

I was curious what Piddock was riding and none of the pictures show his bike brand, unlike just about everyone else. Coincidence? Yes... I know its not a Pinerello...
  • 6 0
Its a mismash of brands. BMC (same as Pauline FPs) with SYNCROS (SCOTT) bars and SYNCROS Silverton SL Wheels,
  • 3 0
@WRXJim: With electronic sr suntour suspension
  • 4 0
@laupe: And XTR brakes/drivetrain, continental tires.

Anyone else remember Pinarello's Dogma mountain bikes from about 2012-2013? There was a full sus, and I think a hardtail also. I saw one in the wild just once, in Aspen 5-6 years ago.

After olympics Hermida spoke about pidckock material and how he came to pick ir, apparently it wasn't just a brand thing but a "ok i fell the flow on this bike" Btw José Hermida coached him on mtb racing on the olympics prepararation and still does.
Appart from that, coments in spanish are more interesting than English commentaries since hermida was elbow to elbow nota long ago.

I don't believe Pidcock even broke a sweat. Everybody else was gasping for air and he was nose breathing.

Tom Pidcock with his aero socks and aero top - marginal gains!!
  • 10 0
At this level, those things actually matter!
  • 3 0
Clothing is where the biggest gains can be made. Full ceramic bearings will only get you a few watts. A loose top flapping in the wind can cost up to 40 watts.
Rachel Atherton would have the sides of her jersey taken in at the track to get the best fit possible. Even Phil Attwill has been tucking his jersey in( he untucks it as soon as he finishes a race run ) and almost no one rides in shorts at dh races as they act as air brakes. @bentopi:
  • 2 0
If you’re cloths are flapping . It is costing you time. Most dh races clothing is not made the correct shape for racing. It is made for biking ,standing up in and look good in catalogs. There are a few races who have sorted there kits out. But most haven’t yet.
  • 1 0
@gcrider: Too bad aero clothing (tight-fitting) isn't allowed in DH
  • 1 0
You can have tight well fitting clothing.( that doesnt flap But you cant have lycra skin suits. @therealmancub:

Think it is interesting the Sarrou is not running a brain on his Epic, twin lock out it looks like. I am sure the big S does not love that...

Are those mezcals on Titouan Carod's bike? Never seen that Red Vittoria label before, and I can't tell that tread pattern.
  • 1 0
New label was premiered with the Syerra. Treat pattern looks new to me.

 @dtheio:
Actually looking closer they are the Mezcal Tread Pattern. Also, looking through his previous IG post it seems like he tends to run the Mezcals a lot.

Would love to see more riders than the same 5-6 per category each time. Show some love to the underdogs.

@prevail no kidding, it's annoying seeing the same 5-6 riders in photo epics like this - we all know what Nino looks like
