Photo Epic: The Conclusion - Snowshoe World Cup XC 2021

Sep 20, 2021 at 11:23
by Andy Vathis

The 2021 season has concluded atop Snowshoe resort and much like the downhill race the day before, the venue delivered quite the dramatic storyline. We have been blessed with perfect weather all week and it was no different for XC on Sunday. Conditions were dry and fast. Very fast. The track was basically identical to that one of 2019, featuring long hardpack straights, a couple natural sections, and the man-made rock garden towards the end of the lap.

As expected, the racing was flat out. Every category that took the start made it one for the books. History was made in the U23 women’s race as Mona Mitterwallner completed her perfect season with another impressive and utterly dominant ride in front of Caroline Bohe and Savilia Blunk. The points race couldn’t have been any closer in the U23 men with it being decided on the very final laps of the season, the Chilean Martin Vidaurre Kossmann coming out on top on the day and in the standings. The overall podium was a carbon copy of the race with Vidaurre Kossmann on top, Simone Avondetto in second and Joel Roth in third.

The Elite races were plagued with flats and mechanicals as racers pushed their equipment to the brink. Evie Richards kept the throttle maxed out all afternoon to take her second World Cup win in a row as the race for the top five raged on behind her. Rebecca McConnell, Anne Tauber, Sina Frei and Anne Terpstra completed the final women's podium of the year as Loane Lecomte took the overall despite missing the final race of the year. The men’s race wasn’t as clear cut with multiple changes at the front of the pack including final laps puncture for both leading contenders Schurter and Avancini. This opened the door for two very hungry contenders in Christopher Blevins and Vlad Dascalu to go toe to toe for the first win... Rather aptly it was the American who came out on top on home soil, concluding an epic week in Snowshoe in the most perfect of circumstances. While Mathias Flückiger didn't have the race he was looking for it didn't matter, he was already the king of 2021 after taking the overall in short track.

Relive the action in the final photo epic of the season, see you next year!

How is there no photo of Victor Koretzkys wheelie along the start finish area because of a front flat front, on his way back to the tech area to get it changed. And fair dos to Blevins he played it well then when he went no one was catching him.

Everyone had flatted. I think Nino would have won, or Koretzky, or Flukinger....

Well, apparently all eyes were on Mona Mittenwallner.

Go to Redbull TV, find that moment and do a screen capture. Then create your own!!!

Evie dominating was fun to watch...but, the men's race was the best of the season (I may be biased due to my nationality and the end result).

Looks like they used a couple sections from the old 24 hour race course. I always remember those roots being the slipperiest things I have ever ridden. One year a pro (I think Trek) crashed in front of me and I thought "how the hell did that dude go down there?" then I hit the same root and had the same crash.

I think that Koretzky photo is captioned wrong, wasn't it Anton Cooper that broke the chain?
  • 5 0
Koretzky definitely did not break his chain.
  • 3 0
Correct. Koretzky had a flat I believe.
  • 5 0
 That's been corrected!

Did you listen to the end of the Redbull live feed with the Blevins season (w)rap? Legend.

Amazing photos, even more amazing crowds!

Great to see a full and noisy crowd

Props to Snowshoe, they pulled off a double DH with around two weeks notice and changed the course a bit for the two races. Also added gnarly sections to the XC course. Large and rowdy crowd and great racing, had a blast there.

dang! Some incredible photographic storytelling here. Amazing set of photos!

I'm so stoked, hopeful, optimistic, and proud of Christopher Blevins' win, but I also fear that this was a pretty 'lucky' victory. Many stars were aligned including flats for three top contenders: Fluckiger, Koretzky, and Avancini. Of course, part of winning is being present and poised for the moment when the stars align and Blevins certainly earned his place in the leading pack and rode smart. Fingers crossed for some future wins!

Great races, great photos. Thank you. Ready for next season to get here..... Well, at least we've got the Cape Epic coming up... With Annika retired it's going to be a shootout for the ladies.

Now the question is: will these young guns Mona Mitterwallner and Martin Vidaurre Kossmann race WC in Elite category next year?
  • 3 2
Personally, I'm not losing any sleep over that one.

Not seeing the Saliva Caribou-type captions I'd hoped for, but crazy photos.

 What happened to Kate Courtney?
  • 3 1
She's has a tough go lately and also slammed on the pavers near the start line.
  • 7 0
She retired from the race about midway - the crash on the pavers was in the short track the other day I think but she was still suffering the effects. Dont think she was in the mix this season in any case.

@paulskibum: Oh OK - that's right. A lot of racing on the RBTV these past few days.
  • 3 0
According to her social she is mentally and physically done with this year..
  • 1 0
 @Willikers: Can't blame her. She'll be back
  • 3 0
@suspended-flesh: she has the physiology anyway. There are a lot of holes in her game she needs to fix.

Those rolling hills of Snowshoe captioned are 4000’ tall (and up).
