bigquotesCreating expert level trails is embedded in Sentiers du Moulin's DNA and this also holds true during Quebec's cold winters. The goal is to change the misconceptions around fatbiking, proving that it can be just as adrenaline inducing as summertime trails. If a rider like Thibaut Ruffin can get down with what's to offer here, then we know we're going in the right direction.

If you've never tried winter fatbiking you can't hate on it... its pretty incredible and we ride almost as hard in the winter as we do in the other 3 seasons! When the conditions are just right it's pretty incredible... makes you feel like you were 14 again!

Agreed, snowboard Saturday and fatbike Sunday, makes for a great weekend. Those that hate on fatbikes are mostly those who have never truly ridden one in their natural habitat. A groomed trail such as this is phenomenal...Do to even drift bro! Haha!

I can’t hate on fatbikes I just look at them like that fat girl you got drunk and ended up banging at that party... you had a lot of fun and want to brag about it but....it’s fat....

@scotttherider: let's hope that girl thinks about you the same way.

fatbikes on snow are so much fun. even if you're not going that fast you're always on the edge of control, and crashing on snow is of little consequence. great opportunity to drink and ride...

@Toy: unfortunately they tend to fall in love so... I don’t think the feelings were mutual.

Agree- one of the best ways to bring winter living to life is on a fat bike and some snowy trails- just feels like winning to me.

@flipoffthemonkeys: they're actually more versatile than people give credit for, but definitely best on snow.

@flipoffthemonkeys: with the right attitude, every opportunity is a great opportunity to drink and ride.

Agreed! I love riding in the snow! no suspension, no fuss just the bike and the retain! When the snow is right it is pretty epic!

Fat biking isn't dead. A few communities are even snowshoe grooming jump lines.
  • 9 0
Marquette Michigan has a few jump trails that they groom for winter fat biking.

@matjtom90: and Spirit Mnt, Duluth MN has lift service with dedicated flow runs.

Where I live you could not find a fat bike earlier in the season, not dead here, it has become popular. I think it depends where you live, if you get consistent cold weather with snow it is another option to skiing, skating, or other winter sports.
  • 7 0
almost impossible to get one right now though. It has exploded in Quebec...

 @enduroelite:
Same here in New Brunswick, never been this popular before!

All the major singletrack networks in VT are groomed now. Snow dogs FTW. Dad life win too. Can get an hour of outside time in instead of a full or half ski day.

Did this yesterday on a couple of laps down the back side of prairie view and jewel pass - inside foot out, a little bit of rear brake and driftin' through the corners at speed. Once you get the hang of it and traction is right, the rip is just as much fun as a summer high speed run.

Cool edit. It's been a great fatbiking season in the NE USA this year. But "Thibaut Ruffin picks up some impressive speed through the deep snow"? Those look like groomed trails to me.
  • 11 0
Now let's see the outtakes where he gets 1 mm outside of the packed line and face plants in the snow a million times. Fat biking is so much fun!!! Like everyone says, you're always on the edge of control.

Here comes les haters du fat bikes! Ha ha!
I have tried one once, and was impressed by the floatation, but wasn’t really that thrilled. This winter however, with everything else being shut down due to COVID, has left me feeling so stir crazy, I’d love to have a fat bike just to go for a slow steady crawl through the woods on a nice winter day. I think the best though, wood be lift access, really long, easy downhill trails for fatbiking. If ski resorts cut some trails like that and ran them along side the ski season, it would be awesome!

For me, Fatbiking is 30% “winter training”, 30% “fun singletrack’esque riding”, 30% “an excuse to experience the beauty of winter in solitude” and at least 10% “a great excuse to have a sip of whisky in the woods at the top of a climb.”

Great video. Winters are long here and fat biking has grown tremendously in the last 3-4 years. It helps that we have dedicated trails just for FBing. It's a different type of riding than mountain biking which is hard to explain to non FB riders. It sure beats staying indoors and doing nothing.

And is so, so much more fun than trying to stay in biking shape on Zwift.

@atourgates: You actually see a lot of roadies in my area picking up fat biking in the winter to stay fit. You can tell because they blast by you open the climb in aero kit and Kask helmet...then you catch them half way thru the descent

sweet; must be nice to have groomers. Are these trails multi-use for XC skiiing too, or just FB?
  • 3 0
just fatbiking... but they have dedicated snowshoe and xc skiing trails as well...

Looks like a typical fat bike day in the Rockies. I like how they used clip edits and tunes to make it look exciting and fast. Was that at 1.25x speed. Haha. I love fat biking but it ain’t sexy, unless you have an edit team and a plaid shacket.

Where I live the already impressive trail system nearly doubles in mileage because of the winter only single track created each year. It’s a Mecca. I don’t know what I would do without a fat bike.
  • 5 1
It really is my favorite biking season, and the local cycling community really bands together to set the trail up...I wish we had that many people volunteer in the summer...Heck and who says these things are slow When the conditions are right I can PR in the winter, while having fun drifting the corners.

Watches 30 seconds of video. Stops video. Grabs popcorn. Scrolls to comments.

Good to see this. So many still think the fatty is slowly riding boring as hell roads and nothing else. Here in SLC, we have dedicated teams snowshoeing some really interesting stuff after every storm.
  • 1 0
Yeah... if everyone rode like that on groomed trails we’d need to rework the trails every hour... Just so you know, this edit is not a picture of reality. He probably crashed many times riding at those speeds. No matter what skills you have or tires you just can’t fight the wobbly physics of snow cover.

Very nice riding Thibault, nice editing and the trails are amazing at SDM. My only critic is the music does not fit the vibe of the video.

Très nice !

Fact or opinion? Fits like a glove to me.
  • 2 1
@Nicsauve: Critics about music choices are clearly only about personal opinions. Étrange question man ..
Bien content que tu ai aimé la soundtrack !
  • 2 1
@Nicsauve: can clearly only be an opinion since its in regards to tastes. My respects for the edit and all the efforts put into it.Me personally ( so my OH opinion ) Ill move the hell away somewhere warmer cant bear these humid winters with anything.

As it turns out, BIKES ARE FUN!

I picked one up last winter, glad I did because there is not one to be had this season. Thanks Covid.

I will say I am having more fun than I ever thought I would. More of winter training and better than being on a trainer or a treadmill.

- they look like crap
- they ride like crap
- they turn like crap (afraid I will develop bad habits)

My local trails are in great shape, some are machine groomed, others are rider groomed.
With that said, I cannot wait to get back on my 160mm bike and hit dirt, rocks and roots.

Ah fat biking is so much fun. I wish we had a few trails around here that we could ride like that.

I gotta get me all the bikes

Looks like the riding was fun, but the video was all over the place.

 Jump cuts make everything rad

Sure keep showing these awesome trails while were still not allowed to visit. Frown At least our annual reservations have been allowed for a future date when the world ever gets back to normal. BTW those cabins going up to wolverine are beautiful. So Jealous!

I live in a lake community so if the snow is deep elsewhere, I can usually ride the frozen lake for fitness. Beats cycling indoors

I HEART my fatbike, I just don't ride mine in the snow though. I do 50-60 mile gravel rides on it also lol. My riding buddies think I'm nuts. Those who have one know once you up the pressure they roll along.

Watches video, scrolls up to reread title, rolls ones eyes.

He's running some loooooooow pressure in those tires.
  • 9 0
I weigh 200 pounds (thanks winter!) And run about 2 psi for bushwhacking on 26x5. It's crazy and it's fun... And I've never flatted my fat bike, including a crash into a barbed wire fence.
  • 7 0
Not checking pressures with our thumbs but with our fists.
  • 3 0
I wish just one of my fat bike rides were even half of that speed

SDM, vous etes vraiment sur la coche!

What a great edit. You could replace shot for shot to any other season and tell the same story. Well done.
