(Casey Brown + Poppy the Dog) + Singletrack = Fast
In other words, when Casey Brown finds herself being chased down by Poppy the Dog on a trail ride, you know they're going to be shredding. Check out Casey and Poppy in the latest Sony Dream Capture episode, "Tail Gunner." Enjoy!
I had a fantastic trail dog Staffy/Lab cross. We would do a 20 mile loop and Id stop to give him a breather and some water (in case he dropped dead) and hed be fetching me stones to throw for him while we had stopped. He was a maniac, his fitness was unbelievable. Sootey his name was but I used to call him 4 wheel drive. He could run up an eight foot wall like it wasnt there. I miss him every day.
Most of it was fall and winter riding. I had heard heat can be an issue since their airway is not the best for breathing hard. I was more worried about cold on his feet, but that never came up either.
Pit bulls are the best free runners around. I've seen them take 2 1/2 story cliffs fully bottom out and keep on running. If you don't mind grabbing them by the collar and giving them some help they can scale up about the same height. You need an early desexed male thats been well socialised in case you run into other dogs though. Not that a well trained and socialised pit will start a fight but it'll sure end one. Always carry a breaking stick.
Some dogs are bred for retrieving, some for herding, others for biting hard and not letting go. I couldn't get my poodle/golden retriever mix to NOT be obsessed with birds, so be careful with any "fighting" dog. Nature vs. Nurture, sometimes nature will win. It's not the dogs fault, but generations of selective breeding will always leave a mark.
When I started riding with my border collie she did the same thing, keeping her face just an inch or two next to my wheels/ pedals, I hated it but her herding instinct was always in full effect. Then she started getting a little too close and I kicked her in the face while pedalling a couple times (an accident), and one time she buzzed her face on my rear tire. After that she started running about 3 feet back and life was good.
Dog could run for miles, 3 hour rides no problem. Sometimes if I didn't run her out on my ride she'd go on rides with friends of mine just so she could run some more.
How many have you known? Dogs not owners. They do attract some bad types but, I've known great dogs who overcame shitty ownership. Two such dogs saved my life on three separate occasions.
Pit bulls were selectively bred, by us, to be more dangerous than the average dog. That's a fact. Retrievers retrieve, herders herd, and fighters fight. Anybody who doesn't accept this when they own a pit bull is ignorant or negligent. Owning such a dog, not only pit bulls, is a much bigger responsibility than most owners seem to accept. I know that my retrieving breed will blindly sprint into traffic after a tennis ball, but many pit bull owners seem to be in denial of the fact that their dog has any instincts at all.
My dog is hopelessly friendly. He loves everybody, probably too much. The only three dogs that have ever been aggressive to him have been a pit bull mix, a Rottweiler, and my sisters little bastard of a dachshund (who was abused by the previous owners and hates everybody but my sister).
Every Pit I have known or met has been hopelessly friendly too often too much so. Pit bulls are not very loyal like people try to say they are and are very easily stolen. They have been bred this way so that the opposing dogs owner can wash them down before a fight to ensure no cheating by putting foul tasting chemicals on their coat. During a fight there are three people IN the pit with the dogs as they fight. Two owners or handlers and the referee. Any dog that turns its head towards a person and thus away from the other dog loses the fight. Rottweilers are loyal dogs and usually only bond to their pack and are very protective. Pit bulls are protective too but, the threat usually has to be obvious whereas most Rotti's I know are constantly on the lookout for a threat. I don't like Pit Bull mixes because they retain some of the pit bulls power with out all of its human bred kindness. I've known plenty of retrievers who couldn't retrieve, herders who couldn't herd and one pit and one amstaff (both desexed males) who wouldn't fight even when other dogs were snapping at them because they were too intent on retrieving. I've had two pits herd away two wild mares and an aggressive stallion that charged at me. Herding, retrieving and baiting are all just expressions of prey drive and pits have a stronger prey drive than any other dog.
Don't understand why everyone defends these dogs? The fact is the are the worlds most dangerous dog and cause the most fatality's period. And for that reason I hate them and their owners.
If you are actually interested in some facts about what makes you think they are so dangerous when generations before feared the rottweiller, dobermann, german sheperd and even the blood hound then please read this.
It contains statistics on people aggression in dogs going back to the late 1800s. The reason people so vehemently defend them is because they are being banned by ignorant politics, sensationalist media and poor representation. We have so few working breeds of dogs left in the world and none with as undiluted a blood line as the Pit Bulldog. They are in my mind the greatest breed of dog man has ever been able to produce and exhibit rare traits that when lost will never be able to be replicated. I have lived with two known many and now live in a country where I am not allowed to own one. I see the show bred versions now showing hip dysplacia useless running gaits and timid natures and realise that this is the future for all non working breeds of dogs. Nothing but cancer ridden useless stupid animals made for being pet and getting sick so the vet industry can do what the human heath industry is. If you were buying a bike you would want the most high performance, low maintenance bike you could get right? Well the Pit Bull is the ultimate Freeride Bike, The Grey hound is the ultimate Road Bike, the Alaskan Malamute is the greatest Snowmobile etc. Why make do with under performing dogs bred to LOOK PRETTY. Almost every Mastiff breed has been bred back to the Pit Bull at some point to increase its courage. If you ever saw the Crocodile Hunter catch pigs with his dog Sui you would appreciate having a good ear dog who didn't let go of a vicious boar when you got near. P.S. No Offense to Poppy. I have shot pheasant over a work bred German Short Haired Pointer and I think they are a greatest trainable breed of general purpose hunting dog.
Back in 1996-1999 my buddy and I got his dog to learn jumping doubles. We built trails in his yard and she would chase us. She even ran the berms at full pace.
I have a 6 month Plott hound/ Burnese mountain mix and 10 acres of land now.....
@anthill films are the four stills in this post also shot on the Sony ActionCam? If yes, that's impressive depth of field and crispness! If not, your placement of "Shot 100% on the Sony ActionCam" right below the photos is a bit deceiving.
I'm curious as well (point and shoot basic noob here, but buying something over the winter)....especially pic #2...is that a still from a vid and how much "work" went into it, if any?....Just wondering if a pic/vid simpleton like myself can just shoot vid and get this kind of pic quality with a few button clicks or will I still need editing skills...Thx
I must be the only one that finds it massively annoying riding trails only to have a 'trail dog' pile out In front of me. Great for the owner, shite for everyone else wanting to ride...
Ya Poppy! Where's all your gear? Oh, you don't need any? Not even shoes? Not a coat? Are you ready to go - for an hour - a day - a month? Who knows? Just jump in the truck and head out! Poppy's always in! Let's do this!! In dog we trust.
nice one little brownie,,,,, always good seeing you in vids,,, great concept and awesome angles and creative shots, that we have come to expect from the athill guys, awesome vid guys
My GSP Libby has been running the local Vietnam trails since 6mo, and loves them. Too bad Highland does not allow dogs off leash, she would be happy to ride up on a chair and rip down with the crew. Great video!
Slow mo dog ears flopping FTW!
Wish my mutt pup could hang, but she either wants to bite my rear tire or go off and chase deer and not come back. Ah, well.
Trail dogs live a sweet life. My old girl has retired to more of a hiking dog these days after hundreds of trail miles chasing bikes. Still loving life.
not sure, but if not, somebody have to make it. Some of the features could make the remote the dog, or the BARK button should be there. Damn, this is totaly Kickstarter project.
man, that has to make for some bouncy footage... wouldn't want to fall on it either. Thanks for the link. I thought it might have been a custom set up.
