Matt Hunter Freeriding in Interior BC - Video and Photo Epic

May 28, 2016 at 14:55
by Anthill Films
In his latest Action Cam edit, Matt Hunter wanted to see if he could channel the feeling of tree-skiing, but on his bike. No trail. No path. Just quick decisions at every turn. Check out the video below with accompanying photo epic by Sterling Lorence. This is Bush Invader*.

bigquotesI love tree skiing, that's an insane feeling. I've always wanted to do that on my bike. It was pretty exciting heading through terrain where I couldn't tell what was hiding behind the brush. I was holding on tight! - Matt Hunter

"Bush Invader" - title was last seen in the 70's, an old free ride flick where they all ride hard... or was that something else??
  • 30 1
Yeah, saw that recently. The riding was great but the story was a bit thin, I mean, a burly guy calls round to fix the plumbing and takes his shirt off (plumbing is hot work) all of a sudden it cut to a holiday in whistler shredding A line and eating sushi.... like wtf?
  • 3 2
 Wade does dallas??
  • 7 2
Actually that was something else, the well known Bush the invader
  • 4 2
Slang term for the Iraq war.

70s Bush Invader was a whole different type of flick

I used to like Matt Hunter a lot, but then he sold his soul and made an electric bike advertisement. Since then, he's just meh.
  • 12 1
@abzillah: i mean if he didnt do stuff like that, i dont think we would ever heard of him, that said i didnt like that add either but a man gotta live eat and feed children so i still like him Big Grin

@abzillah: I don't care what bike he rides. HE f*ckING RIPS
  • 13 0
I have always thought Matt (Bush) Hunter was a higher level human, but that 3rd photo where he's reppin' his Jedi skills by making that log levitate is seriously NEXT LEVEL.
  • 19 11
Maybe i missed something but he just skidded his way down a hill surrounded by 3 billion cameras. Fun all the same but not what I would expect from Matt. I would not call it particulary epic. But thats just my opinion.

This is the essence of big mountain riding - just taking a bike up a bloody big hill and trying to get down somehow. Berms, jumps and hardpack have their place in bike parks, but part of the thrill of riding in places like this is the sense of going 'where no man has been before' (on a bike at least!)
  • 5 1
Yup! you missed the quote written just above the video which explains it quite plainly, i wouldn't blame you for that, as i also missed it because i was drawn straight to those beautiful images.

I think maybe I spent the while time thinking:-
"Hes going to get a stick in his mech!"
"Hes going to get a stick through his spokes!"
"Hes going to get a stick in his mech!"
Etc etc
Its the kind of ridding I do on a less mountainous level. I just keep getting sticks stuck everywhere and consider it more a short cut to better stuff.

@Stranger-Danger: Back in the day; before bikeparks and trail centers... we just called it riding.

Hunter is The Man! Lotsa great pics.

Yeah, let us all plough through the forest and hope for a good word with forest officials and land owners.

Us ‘older’ guys are ever-stoked to see Matt is still shredding. Just shredding. Hope for us all! If only vicariously lived hope.

Matt on a big bike again!!!!!!
  • 3 0
Yes, finally! That's how I want to see him. Hunter was absolutely inspirational in Seasons and ROAM and it's great to see him back on a big bike. A freeride icon. Not happy with all that enduro thing he's be thrown into. I miss now a proper edit with him shreding, shot with a proper cameras in a proper way.

Hell yeah! The only let down was the photo with the crocs...hehe

Sterling Lorence spontaneous and loose action photography is much more enjoyable than Sterling Lorence over-composed carefully-lit twenty-fifth take photography. (e.g. the POY candidate a year or two ago)
  • 1 0
Oh damm. This comment struck a nerve. Way too real!!!
  • 4 2
Loved the video, and pretty much anything Matt Hunter does. But I have to ask; Is it still considered riding with no trail when you know exactly where all the cameras are placed (where you need to ride) and where all the turns filled with roost enhancing dirt are strategically located? Or is it considered riding in a new natural style trail?
  • 5 0
they set up below and he went in the general direction blind .. they tried shooting with a few pre scopes but the footage didnt look as good so raw dawg it was.. .. not sure where that puts your question now?
  • 1 0
@farmageddon: Thanks for filling us in. Glad to know it was done as advertised and not the other way around.

@teamperil: Nice vid, great photos, awesome riding... title sounds like a bad dose of crabs...

I really want to buy the Action Cam mini since it has removable battery and GPS built into the wrist remote and a tripod mount on bottom. But they are hard to find at a good deal. Every place I look for it online just seems rinky dink, hokey, etc.
Plus, doesn't the Sony have some sort of built in vibration software that GoPro doesn't?

I'm a flipping tight wad. GoPro Session is neat, but I want to use the camera for filming my daughters basketball court time and at bats in softball and then pop on my helmet for riding. Cell phone is always dead when I go to use it for filming.

If Polaroid would have made their Cube+ have a better MOUNT, it would be perfect for my needs.

When scrolling through the daily Pinkbike feed theirs not to many videos that catch my attention, but when I see Matt Hunters name headlining one, I have to watch it. Another good one Matt, keep on keeping on.
  • 3 3
Just think how lovely the area would be if everyone started riding where ever they wish as opposed to staying on designated trails. Yes, I think Matt is a superb rider. No, I don't think what he's doing here is appropriate. That's fun, and crazy, and scary...and destructive.
  • 3 0
Excellent!!! I haven't seen Matt on a DH in a long time now, always a treat Smile
  • 3 1
No pre-determined trail - Yet knows exactly where to put cameras...... .......It's a cool video all the same, but this is almost as fake as the glider drone film he made.
  • 1 1
I note that only one comment mentioned the destructive nature of this video and photo shoot. As riders it is long past time that we can remain ignorant of the impact that this has and the negative image that it portrays to those who would restrict us from accessing areas to ride. Too bad Specialized condones this, and shame on Pinkbike for posting this and encouraging this type of riding.
  • 3 4
But whyyyy Sony action cam.... This is Matt Hunter for Pete's sake! It's obvious from the photos how jaw dropingly epic this looked, but in the video it just looked like it was shot on a potato with the eyes of a fish Frown Surely it would pay to put the time and effort into some proper cinematography for one of the most inspiring riders in the world? I guess to keep sony happy as a sponsor you could throw in a few pov shots from the action cam,

Other than that, so happy to wake up and see more from Matt Hunter... Was starting to miss his cool vibes Big Grin

"Surely it would pay to put the time and effort into some proper cinematography "
dude this is anthill films making it, the best video team for biking videos ! it is promotion of sony camera so there are limits of how this video will look like and of course it needs to be all on sony camera... Go and watch premiere of Not 2 bad and you will be happy with their performance.

I was just sued by the Sierra Club for watching this video.

Spesh pulled a blinder signing him. There isn't a racer in the DH WC as rad as Hunter. Sometimes being cool as **** is enough.

Matt Hunter is without a doubt, the best advertisement for mountain biking ever. He does what most other people wish they could do.
  • 1 0
cool pics, but I dont dig the off trail stuff. That gets us shut out of places, and fucks up the habitat that I like to ride through
  • 1 0
Does anyone know which camera was used for the making of those pictures? They look amazing.
