| United Kingdom of Dirt, Ep. 1 | Swinley Forest

Welcome to Swinley Forest, 1,000 hectares of prime riding land in the sunny south of England. Okay, it's not the sunniest place in the world, but when compared to the rest of England it's not too shabby. Located just off highway M25 which circles London, Swinley is one of the best all-around riding centers in this part of the country with trails ranging from beginner-level to intermediate. Olly and Brendan (aka, Bren-Dog) have hit Swinley during a scorcher of a day by UK standards -- they're actually sweating -- and they are tearing up the trails. They even establish a new park challenge, a tabletop-to-tabletop transfer dubbed the Wilkins Leap.

Just outside London it's a very popular trail center and for good reason

That Wilkins leap is enormous, god knows how you get the speed to do that through those narrow turns before it.
  • 12 0
what a way to feel slow! wonder how many pringled wheels will happen trying that....
  • 3 0
I've seen someone attempt it before and fail. Didn't think it was possible and yet they make it look so easy!

The amount of pop that Ollie and Brendan have is actually ridiculous, seeing the speed they run in at i'm tempted it hit this, reckon I can get the speed in no problem, just the pop required will be insane... ah well guess the 29er will have to learn to fly
  • 3 5
that last photo is great for correct pop technique. There was one of wynn masters boosting the step down with no kicker in hafjell last year. im going to visualize that next time I try a gay-ass tabletop

Bren's grin @ 4:57 after that scrub. That's why we ride bikes. It's fun!

Title should be "How to make a rather boring trail center look fantastic"
  • 14 7
any "trail centre" is a fun trail centre, there only boring if your not creative, if your not creative then i think riding a bike would be boring anyways
  • 16 5
No really, it Is a boring trail centre.
Its 90% flat and the trail builders were given so many limitations that what constitutes a Swinley trail feature is a berm or small bump. The video shows what adds up to about 30seconds of the entire trail network (the few good bits), watch it again and its the same sections from multiple angles repeated over and over.
Its such a shame because Back on Track who built Swinley also built Bike Park Wales. It could of been so much more but goes to show all that can be achieved when the build team are limited by land owner politics ever step of the process.

doingitright232 - not all trail centres are boring.
The one in the vid of mine has been done by the same team - granted they had more elevation to work with, but it's brilliant:

Swinley is a rather weird place, the blue section is probably more fun than the red extension as a whole. I'm not saying it a bad place to ride, but to make it as fun as possible you have to with lots of speed on the downs. And the sand stone mix is horrible in the wet (grinding paste and slippery)
  • 3 0
Back in 2008 there used to be some proper gnarly (albeit short) downhill runs with big dropoffs and steep rough berms, but those were miles off the corkscrew, jump trail and flow trail, so I guess they weren't legalised properly..

I wonder how much olly influenced Brendan to hit that gap at rampage?
  • 6 0
I'm now really stoked for summer riding.
  • 6 1
Amazing place to ride. Well the first half is, perhaps one day I'll finish the trail without going to A&E

Dear Bikepark-owners (Swinley Forest: do not feel addressed), in case your park offers flow trails similar like that, please note that it is a necessity to maintain flow trails (eg removing brake bumps). Sincerely, every bikepark visitor

Dear rider (and that does necessarily need to apply to you todesegenel) : bike parks are not money making enterprises, they are built and run by volounteers who often pay a lot from their own wallet to make those trails happen. So how about you stop whining and fix it yourself, everyone will appreciate your work. Somebody should do something mentality barely applies even in a supermarket.
  • 5 2
WAKI... seriously? How do you imagine a guest rider coming halfway of the hill up, with a shovel, to pimp a trail? It would cost him at least few hours of riding, for which he probably paid by buying a lift ticket and travelling there. And would a bikepark owner lend a shovel to a strange person? Or maybe we should create a kind of tool rental? Hey, no dig - no ride guys! You gotta first lend a shovel, repair the trail and then you can kindly pay us (lift staff) to ride these trails.

And I'll not believe that bigger bikeparks, like ex. Winterberg, don't earn enough money from these huge ques of riders waiting for the chairlift you can see in the season.
  • 3 0
Swinley doesn't really have any braking bumps which is a surprise given it's high usage, Cannock (I would guess one of the UK's busiest trail centres) however is horrendous for braking bumps
  • 4 0
@WAKIdesigns not quite sure where you are from. but most bikeparks in europe charge 25-40.- €/day and are therefore def. "money making enterprises". You wouldnt expect Skiers/Snowboarder to maintain their pistes, would you? IMHO there is no difference between summer and winter business for a cable car owner. Both seasons require maintance!

todsegnel... and the lift is run for free right? People running the lifts do it free? People selling tickets, working at bike rental, they all do it for free? Taxes for the land paid annualy all that stuff, in general running costs for the park in the summer are not much lower than in the winter, yet there are 10 if not 20 times more skiers in the winter than in the summer. Brooce - so you think that for instance Arek Perin gets paid lots for building Stoze bike park? So I tell you something, most people building trails in the bike parks do it free of charge and some of them need to beg the ski resort to allow them to do that and promise than maybe in 5 years they will get the money back for runinng the park.

Meanwhile a bloody whining btch comes and demands stuff because he paid some shtty money for a place in the chalet. All I ams saying is: be grateful that there is something to put you above the brake bumps and that the brake bumps are on something. Most people do not know how fortunate they are. Show some bloody appreciation, if you are not helping to dig the at least don't whine.

WAKI, I'm not sure if there is the same situation in renowned foreign bikeparks as in little polish ones, but anyway, lets leave this matter as I have no expertise here. How do you imagine people coming to a bikepark from different parts of a country and fixing their trails? I'd rather spend this time digging my home trails (which I do) and when I put my money and vacation to go riding on awesome tracks, I want to use it to the maximum. So how can I not whine, when I cannot enjoy the track after investing my savings to be there? I don't invite people from all around the world to ride my trails if they are not ready. It would be okay if we were talking about a nearby local bikepark, but not when you have to economize all year for this one trip.
  • 1 2
I talked of Hafjell... No I do not imagine visitors doing it. I imagine them not being anal about the brake bumps. Having trouble with brake bumps in a bike park is like having problem that cars run on fuel and break down sometimes. If you put your money on vacation then you either deal with it or you stay at home riding your home trails. And well fixing brake bumps is a tough job as you can't just fill them in. You must take the whole layer and fill up with new one. That's why larger bike parks decide to use concrete - nice! isn't it?

brake bumps and haggard trails are part of downhill MTB. accept it, or quit, because they are never going away. even XC has haggard sections
  • 1 0
Yeah, but I was thinking about flowy trails that you could easily ride with a hardtail. They don't have to always be smooth and shiny of course, but huge (keyword) braking bumps can ruin all the joy unless you have over 160mm of travel (roughly), while there's no point in using a big travel bike (not talking about Hafjell now, as it seems to be a typical mountain trail either way).

Didn't look quite like this last Sunday - very, very wet. Alot of work has gone into Swinley and this needs to be recognised, but bar the start of labyrinth (where Wilkins is) it is an xc spot.

Great Edit of our local trail. Memories of summer and that double was fantastic.
  • 2 1
There is quite a few fun sections to ride at Swinley if you look around, but much better on a weekday, as last time i went on a Sunday there were families pushing baby buggies up the downhill trails!

I just moved near Swinley Forest , haven't rode it yet but soon I will be there hucking everything on my Hardtail.. I will have to get some films made there but don't know anyone to ride with Frown

Great video! Park looks awesome. Is that really the UK? The trails are dry, even dusty. They must have shot the video on the only sunny day, ever?

The video just says loading but never does and I have some others that do this too. Anybody having the same issue? Just started a few weeks back. Thanks

Unfortunately, many videos won't play on PB or are low res, especially if using mobile or ipad. Go to the source site instead. This one's on EpicTV.

 lol or the zombie apocalypses

Just so you know, Swinley forest is really flat. MOST of the red is flat XC riding and the same with the blue. Only 5-6 sections are actually DH. If you really want to have fun, ride the area around the baby maker, and on the otherside of the steephill you ride up to get to babymaker, there is a really good short freeride track with a huge jump when hit at speed.

 Hot damn ollie shreds!
  • 1 0
what frame is that they are riding?
  • 2 0
One I assume is a DMR Bolt. The other is a scott of some kind. 29er or 650b. Looks like a 29er to me which would imply it's a 900 in some form or another.
  • 2 1
Sweet thanks. Ya I was curious because I did not see any full suspension on the DMR website and I kind of like the look of that. Even though their like rentals in this or something lol. Is the bolt still in production?
  • 2 0
...and I see it now. Wow sick bike I like it.

It's only available as a frame.

Problem with flats, go tubless, simple.

Do some of you guys who are calling swinley boring know that 3 black runs are in the making? Trail team swinley have just got insurance to build 3 black trails with wall ride, drops up to 8ft, tables upto 7ft and gap jumps up to 10ft.

Swinley forest is just about to get a whole lot more fun and crazy!
  • 4 1
Clown sections, fuck all to do with MTB.
  • 1 0
Oh yeah because everybody who rides black route is capable of hitting stuff like that. Why would you want wallrides on black route anyway?
  • 1 0
Did anyone else notice how Olly's irises are different colours?
