Kurt Sorge's Polygon XQuareone DH - Red Bull Rampage 2018

Oct 25, 2018 at 4:32
by Paul Aston
Kurt Sorge

Kurt Sorge is the King of Rampage with three wins packed under his huck-belt. The only riders that come close are Kyle Strait and Brandon Semenuk with two wins a-piece, although there's a sizeable amount of time between their wins. Kurt's amassed his victories in a relatively short amount of time, which means he's won 50% of the events over the last six years - incredible.

Kurt Sorge is using a production Polygon Xquareone DH frame which is a full carbon fiber chassis with alloy rocker links. It uses the stanchion-based Naild/R3ACT 2Play suspension system that appeared last year on Polygon's and Marin's trail bikes.

Kurt Sorge Details
Age: 30
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 145lbs
Frame size: Medium
Wheel size: 26"
Tire pressure: 35 psi
Fork pressure: 60 psi +4 volume tokens
Shock pressure: 250 psi
Handlebar width: 800mm

Zip-tie traffic light color-scheme on-point.

Compared to other setups he has been using on this bike, Sorge has increased suspension pressure and stiffness and slowed down the rebound for those XXL hucks that riders only find themselves sending at events like Rampage and the Fest Series. Sorge says he has been on this rig since August and has been playing with different setups for all different kinds of disciplines, but his Rampage/Fest set up is similar.

Sorge also uses the good ol' inner tube system for this reason: pinching a tube on the Utah rocks will result in a slower and hopefully manageable puncture, where landing a huge drop and burping a tubeless tire could have faster and uncontrollable consequences.

Sorge uses a complete Deity cockpit with an 800mm wide handlebar.

"Can we use smaller rotors to save weight?" said nobody ever at Rampage...
...as well as "I need more gears to accelerate me faster down this cliff..."

Hope's DH wheels are clad in Schwalbe's Addix Ultra Soft Magic Mary's and inflated to 35psi, with tubes.

26" downhill forks are nearly non-existent in 2018, so there's plenty of mud clearance that will not be needed in the Utah desert.
Suntour's downhill air shock has still not made it into production, so Sorge uses a Fox Float X2, and you can imagine it is packed with spacers and pressure for Rampage.

Does not look like a session, will not be ridden by Randy, and has finally dethroned Ellsworth as the ugliest bike of all time. I'll show myself out...
  • 14 11
I understand there is an innovative suspension linkage on this bike. Unless the consumer is absolutely 100% a geek for that innovation, it's difficult to choose this bike aesthetic over other completely capable whips, with complex kinematics, that push aesthetic boundaries, that would inspire me to ride based upon the sexy simple cosmetic design principals they employ.
  • 68 4
Ugliest bike ever goes to Redalp. Not even a competition.
  • 12 7
@twhart20: The thing is, the suspension linkage really isn't all that innovative. It's equally as innovative as Yeti's switch infinity and just utilizes a sliding rail instead of a linkage, which when you analyze the difference between that and a regular rotating linkage, there isn't a ton of difference. Ugly as sin just to be "innovative"
  • 5 6
It's the swingarm that kills it for me. Whereas this one I'm okay with...

  • 10 7
I disagree. The eBike look is all the rage now.
  • 18 4
Polygon does not look that much different it's just that the majority of the industry looks all the exact same
  • 8 5
@tgent: it isn't close to the yeti switch infinity. And in my opinion it works so well that it worth it.
In addition, in person it looks really well
  • 12 2
@shaked: Nope, still just simple physics: linkagedesign.blogspot.com/2017/12/polygon-xquare-one-ex9-2018.html

Marketing told you it is innovative, engineering reveals it is not.
  • 24 1
I gotta be honest I really like it, then again I like chubby tattooed girls with glasses, beauty is in the eye of the beholder lol
  • 11 2
I think it looks awesome, which is about as useless as saying it's ugly. Because subjectivity.
  • 5 1
@tgent: Right, another blogger with an opinion who's never ridden it in meat space. Whatever.
  • 6 5
@tgent: THANK YOU. I'm glad people are finally seeing through the marketing whirlwind of this product's launch. It set a dangerous precedent that wild - and false - claims may be believed.
  • 2 0
@tgent: Antonio’s convo with Brandon about Vital lol good job both of those guys do
  • 4 1
@tgent: Hello pedal kickback. What the what Polygon?
  • 3 0
that inward bend on the seat tube bugs the $@/& out of me. it's like looking at an ingrown toenail on a bunion.
  • 6 0
 Looks like a grasshopper
  • 2 0
 @conv3rt: Thanks for the compliment!
  • 1 1
@thuren: yeah man. Saw you on the 'gram. killin' it
  • 4 1
@R-M-R: Right, have your ridden this suspension platform? Numbers on a page only tell one part of the story and completely lack context relative to how the system is executed. Comparing numbers only works if all the systems work the same, the Naild system works differently. If living in an echo chamber works for you, great, however it's also limiting and having an opinion isn't the same as having experienced something first hand.

 Put a Message on it
  • 1 2
 slow clap
  • 2 1
 @sewer-rat: beerholder?
  • 4 1

.... eye of the beerholder......
  • 2 2
 @sewer-rat: eye of the beerholder.....
  • 1 2
@R-M-R: Sounds a bit like a fake news argument. Everyone in the industry is raving, therefore they must be paid off and have an agenda. That sounds a little more implausable than its actually rides well...unless you believe global warming is hoax.
  • 1 3
@pellegrinimtb: lmao it really does. I just had another look to try and stay positive and hopefully say " ahhhh its actually pretty cool..." but its ugly AF and that's all there is to it.
  • 1 0
@gticket: stink bike would never take advertising money 4 something that wasn't true
  • 1 0
 @sewer-rat: *beer-holder
  • 1 0
@RBalicious: not bothered as long as she goes like a rattlesnake
  • 1 1
Such divas here...... also, I don't know if anything can be as ugly as an Ellsworth.
  • 68 2
 Needs a trust fork
  • 10 2
Came here post the exact same comment. That fork would look right at home on this bike.
  • 7 1
Then it will be the ugliest bike ever made.
  • 4 0
@Sshredder How is this not top comment?
  • 4 0
Meanwhile in Utah... Sorge uses this ugly as sin bike to claim win number four
  • 33 2
What is this new wheel size he's running?
  • 35 3
25.99" I hear it's more playful, more agile, and lighter than that 27.5 shit
  • 24 0
@tgent: and stronger. 2019 the year of the 25.99er
  • 24 2
These 26" wheels looks rad. Must be so playful and much lighter then 27,5" or bigger. Someone knows when this will be available? Hot stuff out there Big Grin
  • 4 0
in my rattled-up brain, it oughta be easier to land a flip with 26"
  • 16 1
26" wheels, check. Tubes in the tires: check. 800mm bars: WTF?? What year is this again, I'm getting vertigo. These bike checks need a headshot of the rider to look for mullets--it's the only way to anchor these bikes on the rocker-to-emo timeline.

"50% of events in the las six years" - thats some quality math
  • 11 0
60% of the time, it works every time...
  • 2 0
 50% of events in the last 2 years also! I’m a math-magician !
  • 6 0
Wait hold on....*breaks out calculator*...Yeah I got the same result
  • 2 2
 Quick maths
  • 1 1
Two plus two is four, minus one that's three.
  • 1 0
@jaame: your meth is...right on right on...
  • 10 0
Sorge's taking that 26''inch wheel ambassador money straight to the Bank $$$$$$$$
  • 1 0
I thought Aggy was also an ambassador but it looks like he's on the big wheels for this Rampage.
  • 10 2
I don’t know... It looks good to me????????‍♂️ If no one likes it I would take few of them... hahahah
  • 9 0
Damn, my cat weighs more than 145 lbs,...
  • 3 0
So, you have a cougar then? Nice.
  • 8 0
Stop. That ain't no traffic light colour scheme!?
Dem be Rasta colours of red, gold and green!
  • 3 0
I was going to make the same comment. Any mountain bike writer worth their salt should instantly recognize a rasta theme!
  • 2 0
Careful. SJWs going to lynch you for cultural appropriation
  • 3 0
@VelkePivo: Nah. The Kootenay dwellers and the Rastafarians have much respect for each other. Many similarities between them! #fourforsorge
  • 8 1
Unpopular opinion time: I think it looks sick and would definitely consider getting one if it weren't plastic
  • 10 8
Popular opinion time: it looks ugly and carbon fiber is not even close to plastic.
  • 10 1
@hmstuna: Carbon fiber is just plastic with bits of carbon woven together
  • 7 4
Snarky opinion time: Chuckling as the trend-followers say it's ugly only because it's popular to say it's ugly. I'd also consider buying one if it wasn't plastic. All carbon bikes are useless after 5 or 6years of solid use and since they're not a re-usable material, they'll end up in a land fill or on the bottom of the ocean to pollute the planet for decades to come. YAY Carbanz! MOAR CARBANZ!
  • 3 1
@NYShred: I agree with all of that except for people calling it ugly only to follow the trend.

This thing looks like LEGO is trying to make a bike, but they only included the ugly pieces. I want to ride this simply so I don’t have to look at it, since I’m sure it rides just fine.
  • 2 1
@vtrace, @NYShred: carbon fiber and plastic are still fundamentally different. They perform in entirely different ways and have different limitations. Saying they're the same is like saying iron and steel are the same. Yes, steel is mostly iron, but behaves totally differently. That's why there are no bikes made of iron, but plenty made out of steel. Just like there are no bikes made of plastic, but plenty of carbon fiber. Because they are different materials!

This doesn't mean I support carbon fiber, I'm not a fan of the whole breaking and throwing away part either and my next bike will definitely be metal. It just annoys me when people call it plastic.

And I still think it's ugly. That's not me jumping on the bandwagon. The reason most people think it's ugly is because most people find it ugly.
  • 1 0
It looks the same, it feels the same, it sounds the same when you flick it. I guess that is enough for some people. Iron and steel, well they are both metals. Enough for some people.
  • 1 0
Ya that’s what I was thinking. Rebirth of the mountain cycle DNA
  • 6 0
145lb rider. 60psi in the fork. With 4 tokens. 250psi in the shock. Rampage is a beast of a competition.
  • 6 0
I new this would happen , as soon as I sell my 26er they come back into fashion
#27.5forlife !!!
  • 5 1
 26 aint dead
  • 2 0
twenty sicks for life !! woohoo!
  • 2 0
 @Kimura: it's Halloween, maybe 26 is undead?
  • 13 6
 26" ain't dead!!
  • 5 0
The 90s called and the first generation superVs want their swing arm back! It's sick and I love it.

"Please stay together, please stay together, please stay together..."

-Polygon engineers, fingers crossed.
  • 1 0
Rampage will make that decision for them
  • 1 0
That lower part on some trails where i live, it would not be useable. It would have knocked on those rocks everytime. Maybe even stopped the rider. Its barrely my current bikes go over them. Def not for everywhere. But only on the gnarliest of rock gardens i ride sometimes.
  • 3 0
Looks perfect for Rampage? I.e. it looks likes it's half way bottomed out standind still?
  • 6 1
 26 ain’t dead Big Grin
  • 3 0
riding this bike it's gotta be like having sex with a girl that you hate but that's amazing at sex..
  • 4 0
Why isn’t anyone talking about how ugly that saddle is?
  • 2 0
would you rather mash your balls on a big, soft arm chair or a razor thin hard roadie seat?
Big Grin
  • 3 0
35psi in tubes? How does he not flat?!?
  • 3 0
lots of talcum powder in the tire truth...... it stops the tire an tube sticking together so the inner tube can move inside the tire. I once had a 4 inch nail go in the top of my tire an out the side wall an the inner tube did not puncture! an extreme example yes, but, it does work to help prevent punctures an snake bites.
  • 2 0
I am confused, do you think 35 is too much or too little?
  • 4 0
 sooooo, 26" ain't dead?
  • 1 0
i wonder if the guys out there riding/competing with him give him crap for having the ugliest bike... especially since he keeps winning, i bet the trash talk is flowing!
  • 2 1
Can't say it looks nicer than previous Poly. I'm sure it works just fine though.
  • 3 2
I love the design of the Poly Siskiu, but this? No thanks ... Maybe works, and works great, but in aesthetics?
  • 3 0
 26 aint dead
  • 1 0
hahaha... I believe most of us here only type comments without see, touch, or even ride the real bike. Shame.
  • 1 0
First time I saw this bike for fleeting sec I thought it was one of the kids fake full suspension bikes you can buy Targay.
  • 1 0
Look how much stack has been added through spacers and bar height. Crazy!
  • 3 4
Is so slack, it seems specific for just hucking and not much else. Why not just take a motorcycle dirt bike, remove the motor, add pedals and use for Rampage!
  • 2 0
 Because those couldn't be sold.
  • 1 0
Looks like the Batmobile and the blind swan had a baby afterall.
  • 3 2
Sorge riding Rampage on an eBike! Oh wait no its a Polygon...
  • 2 1
 Is this thing gonna snap?
  • 2 0
 looks flexy
  • 1 0
It looks better if you tilt your screen 45 degrees.
  • 2 1
I hate that suspension name so much. Naild/react2play wtf?
  • 2 0
  • 2 1
everyone who says this bike ugly is just envy as f*ck
  • 1 0
Kurt Xquareone, send it to me.
  • 1 0
Don't run a rear mud guard at Rampage, please!!
  • 1 0
instead run an stone guard at your carbonfiber rear end at rampage, please! ; )
  • 1 0
 My eyes!!
  • 2 3
 No water bottle cage? Pass.
  • 4 0
nah, this is more of a "hold my beer" type of thing.
  • 3 0
I would love to see some big air tricks that involve a water bottle! One handed seat grab and take a drink with the other hand? No hand backflip with a bottle toss to a fan?
  • 1 2
 Haters everywhere lol..
