Lazer Ultrax Helmet - Review

by Paul Aston
Lazer is one of the world’s oldest helmet companies, having started out making old leather hairnets for Belgian hardmen who raced steel bicycles over cobbled farm roads. Nowadays, Lazer continues to manufacture helmets and eyewear for all cycling disciplines. Their Ultrax helmet boasts a number of features: the Autofit® retention system, twenty three vents, an adjustable visor, and an integrated reflector than can be upgraded to a red, USB-chargeable LED light.

A medium sized Ultrax weighs 290 grams and meets CE, CPSC and AS certifications. Small, medium and large sizes are available, and there's five colours to choose from - flash orange, matte black, camo, matte white or cyan blue. MSRP $89 USD. www.lazersport.com

The white straps got a little grubby over time, but I made use of the ponytail-friendly retention system.

Pinkbike's Take:
bigquotesThe Ultrax's Autofit is a breeze to use as it doesn't require any tinkering - just pop the lid on and the spring loaded retention system fits to your head's size. I normally go for a tight fit with an adjustable retention design, but the Autofit system didn't quite go as snug as I'm used to. That said, I never had any issues with the helmet moving around when things got rough. The retention system is also ponytail-friendly, which is handy for any women or men with gorgeous flowing locks similar to mine. Ventilation is on par with its competition, as well as the weight. I wasn't a fan of the white straps, though, which are a bad choice as they became dirty and stained pretty quickly. Overall the Ultrax helmet was a hit, especially considering the reasonable $89.99 price tag. - Paul Aston

Cyclops from Xmen called, he wants his glasses back. @aoneal I came in looking for a business in the front party in the back mullet joke, but then saw the ponytail, damn...

The ponytail really pulled the room together, did it not?
  • 1 0
Obviously not enough room for that helmet to fit properly.

When you have pretty good dyslexia and you read "Laser Ultrahacks helmet".
On a more positive note it is nice to see a bunch of companies coming out with good helmets for under 100 bucks.

As a child I lived in a small catholic village and town people used to burn dislexic people on stake. It was said to cease build up of dick cheese among villagers

I don't think this is what dr evil meant when he said he wanted fricken "lasers" strapped onto fricken heads.

Throw me a frickin bone here, what do we have?

The helmet sits high on top of the testers head (way too high all around). Aside from thus reducing the protected area, it is rather questionable if the helmet would remain where it is needed in case of an impact. Plus the autofit system doesn't help that issue by being too loose as well.

Anyhow without testing how much g-force of an impact is soaked by the helmet, this test is as good as a bike review that doesn't involve a thorough test ride.

 blame the hair?
  • 2 0
Yeah the Bell helmet sat super weird on his head too. Gotta be the hair or a weird shaped head.

Pinkbike needs to do a helmet review for people with big heads. Very hard to find a good helmet when you have a massive noggin.

I have one of the biggest scones in the Southern Hemisphere. Bell does a really comfortable lid with an easy retention system

I have the helmet...and the white straps are a serious mistake! It seems to sit lower on my head...no pony tail!! I rate it as excellent value ....looks good enough, sits well and coped with everything Morzine/Les Gets threw my way.

Makes me think of the top part of an old Giro Switchblade. Not the ugliest hunk of Styrofoam out there, but POC & Pro-tec skid lids are better looking, better protecting & cheaper. Why look like a doofus when you can not?

Ultimate commuter helmet, I sell more of these than I do any other helmet. Only thing better in Lazer's women's specific helmet the "Kiss."

These fit better, feel better, and have better ventilation than a Trabec ever will!

All mountain helmets. For people not smart enough to protect there face.
You wear gloves? You know what else is worth protecting? Your face.
  • 4 1
Also, for people with enough skill to not smash their face on a trail ride.
  • 2 1
Are you saying you are so good you never crash? So why wear a helmet if you are that good? Why wear gloves?
  • 1 0
 read T.J Lavin's story.
  • 1 0
TJ wants you to wear better helmets then this one, me too. I've broken the front of full face helmets, I wear full face helmets.
  • 5 1
I've never crashed a car, but I still wear a seatbelt. I assume you use a racing harness, helmet, and roll cage when going to the store? I wear a full face when the risk justifies it, and an AM helmet for everything else.
  • 2 1
This helmet is for all mountain riding, not for hitting pro BMX jumps, deferent situations call for different gear. No one is racing enduro on a BMX and no one is competing in BMX competitions on an all mountain bike.
  • 4 0
I wear gloves cause my hands sweat like a crazy man.
  • 1 0
I wear a seatbelt and drive a car that is likely to survive an accident, I hope you do also. My face is worth protecting even when I'm taking it easy. I f yours isn't then ok.
  • 2 1
If you think it's worth wearing a full face while climbing a mountain because you're unable to get back down without smashing your face, that's also okay. Maybe you should learn to land on your shoulder, much better than face planting every time you crash.
  • 1 0
No way this guy's gonna wear a full face, I mean c"mon, hide the beard AND the pony?
  • 1 3
SRC, I think that it is dangerous for kids and beginner ridders to see this style of helmet being worn and excepted as ok. It is similiar to pro wakeboarder's not wearing a vest when they ride in video's. If you are representing the sport you love I think you should be doing it in a way that encourages people to stay safe. Beginners look to the pros and Pinkbike for what safety equipment to wear while ridding. Lately pinkbike has been posting video's of people doing huge drops to sketchy landings with all mountain helmets. Pinkbike needs to stand up and say they won't post videos like that.

src, Your probably a pro mtber and I just haven't heard of you. I have been riding bmx in skateparks and the shore on a full rigid since the 80's. We didn't have helmets back then. I can make it down a mountain without smashing my face. I still wear a helmet now. I wear a helmet like this when I xc. The fashion show that is mtb now is that if you ride a "all mountain bike" you wear a xc helmet. Ride the same trail on a "dh" wear a full face and a neck brace.. The real head shaker for me is that when you ride "dj" you wear a skate board helmet. Wear what you like I don't care about you. Your a smart ass.

 You're* (Yes, I am)
A pro? Naw, I'm terrible. It isn't about fashion, it's about preventing your head from cooking when you're actually pedaling and working hard. It's about comfort and practicality. Try rolling out of landings instead of face planting; as I said, I'm terrible, but I've only ever hit my head with any force once, and that was in a full face because the riding justified it. You don't see XC racers in DH gear because it just isn't practical. Saying the entire market for half shells is based on fashion is simply ignorant.

My intent was to get people thinking about protecting there face, everyone that commented did, Thank you.
