POC Index Flow Gloves 2016

Swedes love safety; we only need to look as far as Volvo to see that. But, they also like to do dangerous things that require safety equipment. Protecting people from their own stupidity is where POC comes in with a range of riding kit and forward thinking products. This Index Flow glove nestles in the middle of the glove lineup, aimed at being lightweight and comfortable with basic protection. There are heavier options including the VPD padded Index DH glove, and slimming all the way down to the Index Air for riders wanting the bare minimum on their paws.

Construction

As I'm getting older, I'm starting to like more protective clothing when hurling myself down mountain sides. Not too much, though, bulky and sweaty body armor that could save some serious injuries is still a no-go, I do like lightweight protection all around. Just like Goldilocks and the porridge, these gloves seem to be just right. The silicone pads on the palm are positioned away from the handlebar grip area, as like many riders I hate pads between my skin and the rubber grip. But in the event of a crash, they are ready to take the edge off of the impact when you plant your hands into terra firma. The knuckle pad goes unnoticed too but I'm sure it will come in handy one day for glancing off of trees.

That foam pad won't make you invincible or give you the power needed to punch down oaks, but should take the sting out of trailside obstacles.

Performance

The perforated palm helps to keep the temperature down and avoid sweaty palms, I prefer the elasticated cuff over velcro fasteners and the terry cloth thumb is good for wiping a sweaty brow. Nearly two months of riding, falling off and a couple of days trail building have kept the Index gloves in one piece. There are a few loose threads, but nothing has opened up or torn yet, even the silicone finger tip grips are intact. I guess that's where the hefty €60 price tag speaks up for itself.

POC Index Flow Gloves 2016
Light padding on the palm for inevitable crashes, perforated palm for air flow and robust construction, even the silicone fingertip pads have lasted for months.

Pinkbike’s Take:
bigquotesThere are some products that you just gel with. They fit properly, get on with the job at hand and are the items you always look for first when getting ready to ride, without them you feel a little lost. That's what the Index glove is to me, and judging by their durability so far, they will be for some time longer. - Paul Aston

My POCkets are not deep enough.
  • 19 2
I must admitten, I couldn't afford that too.
  • 13 1
@stovechunin: I like that, straight off the cuff
  • 5 2
This would be acceptable is they really lasted. Fox, Specialized, Pearl, and Royal gloves fall apart in like a week. At least the Royals are cheap though. Also been wanting to try Giro, they look durable.

@sevensixtwo: I have some Giro, similar to the POC. I have them too. And I actually prefer the Giro. They were cheaper too. The POC started to stretch out and bunch up after a few months where as the Giro still fill firm.

@sevensixtwo: add tld and 661 gloves to that list

@sevensixtwo: I got two pair of these a few years ago. Alternating them between rides they lasted me quite a while. Over a session and a half. One pair I destroyed in a bad crash but I've still got the other pair that I still use albeit a bit stinky and crusty at this point, their third season.

Anyone tried FIST gloves? Ive had em for a bit now and are by far best gloves ive had.
  • 2 0
@sevensixtwo: I'm using the former model for the second summer and do all with it. Short after work ride, pikepark days and even road rides and the glove held up with no issues for the second summer. I also wash them a lot as I tend to get them really dirty and smelly ;-)

no issue so far and I have to admit, the price is high but I guess they are fine to use for an other summer and then it is like EUR 20.- for each year they are used.

Got some cheap gloves before that (like EUR 15.- to EUR 20.-) and those never lastet one full summer of riding.

@lifeofloon: like mine except that I wash mine every now and then ;-) and even that does any harm to these gloves

Pocs stuff is ridiculously over priced. Absolutely disgusting. A friend of mine has a trade account and their stuff is still more expensive than other brands rrp.

 $72 gloves? no thanks.
  • 10 1
and no earth shaking new compound like EVO...ha ha ha I do like the side pads but not for that price and again it is not in CANADIAN DOLLARS on this CANADIAN site.
  • 1 0
@madmon: that is a great point. Why no CAD love?

I also really like the stitching in the thumb. Lots of gloves I've owned dont cooperate with phone touch screens but the stitching on these is very reliable if I need to use my phone with the gloves on.
  • 3 0
I just lick my thumb to use my smartphone. Probably gross, but eh..
  • 1 0
How does the stitching help with that?
  • 4 0
I have the 'air' and find them awesome in our hot summers, expensive yes... my only issue is the sizing, even the XL does not come up very large, perhaps the Swedes have dainty hands ?
  • 5 1
Yep most of the globes on the market are for "ladies hands"...XL or XXL are short. To find a globe who suits my big hands I must test 20 pairs before. But this POC globes are the best one´s I ever own. Very comfortable and reliable, the last about 3 years of enduro,dh and all commuting rides. They suit me Ok.

I found that iXS gloves are very comfy for my big hands. Haven't tried the Poc, but I'm willing to have a look if they last a long time.
  • 1 0
Great gloves but they do run small.
  • 1 0
I was bummed about this too. Bought the XL, which almost always fits me great, and they're too small.
  • 5 0
I got a pair recently...definitely pricey, but quality is top notch and no attention to details was spared in making them for sure
  • 9 2
 My wallet said no

The review is confusing... Those pads don't seem to be positioned for crash protection at all. Instead they appear positioned to prevent blisters. And actually, that padding for the 5th metacarpal seems entirely pointless. Hamate bone padding would be far more useful.

I've had 4 pairs of POC Index gloves, in varying levels of protection.

They are simply put the best gloves I've owned yet. The fit is superb. The durability is higher than you'd expect. And they don't look like motocross wannabe gloves.

However, those little pinkie pads are bullsh*t!!! They don't do anything.
  • 3 1
These gloves were fantastic for me! Rode them 2 full seasons before they finally gave out. I have been trying to track down a new set this summer as the glove I bought to replace them just aren't as good.
  • 9 8
I bought these gloves two days ago, and after riding for about an hour in them I fell and the top fabric tore. The top part of my hand was all bloody except for two knuckles, where the gel pad is located. Least to say, I was completely bummed for paying such a hefty price tag for a pair of gloves that lasted me literally an hour.

 Have you considered not crashing?
  • 16 1
Sounds like they did exactly what they were designed to do, it's just that your timing was bad.
  • 3 3
@iamamodel: We must have different ideas of what a glove is meant to do. Other than helping sweaty hands hold on to the grips, I think a glove should protect your hands from a fall and stand up to the test mountain biking puts them through, especially for a 55$ price tag. These gloves failed at both.
  • 3 1
@Steezwhip: I'm still riding a three year old pair of these gloves. For some reason I don't think it's the gloves fault.
  • 3 1
I got the DH version 2.0

3/8" separation in a seam after a month

I'm 67 and a real bear I guess , left in the parking a few days later by mistake .

Very nice but I'm sure they need to be sewn up by now .

Home depot tool section = work gloves that were pretty much like these in a mossy oak pattern = 2 pairs for $12.99 CAD !!! I've used them for over a month, been through the wash a few times and are still like new.

 You ride with gloves? Pussy

I've been using these a while now. First pair stitching came undone 2nd ride back of hand. Bought a second pair same thing. Both pairs are like new bit the stitching snatched it. I'll probably buy a 3rd pair because that's what POC would expect...
  • 2 0
@DHdavey if the stitching comes undone, get a new pair under warranty. Used it once and was not a problem at all - that is were I expect them to be good considering the high price and I was not dissapointed

Got a pair of these from Chain Reaction the other week, seem to be very well made, time will tell....

POC may be expensive but that stuff lasts.

If the threading doesn't just unravel
  • 2 1
I have now worn out two pair and I mean worn out like holes in the palms. I am still wearing the 2nd pair but I really must replace. Great gloves super comfy and never once had stitching come undone
  • 4 0
 I like it !
  • 1 0
I bought these gloves 2 years ago and they are still in good shape. The only minor disadvantage; the stitching on both thumbs disappeared one year ago.
  • 2 1
When will glove makers put some pads at the base of the wrist again? Like ... that's the part that is the easiest to hurt. wtf.
  • 1 0
I bought these gloves and they split down the seam on the cuff after trying them on for only the second time. In future I'll stick to gloves with a velcro wrist fastener.
  • 2 1
Mine the cuffs are unthreading. And the cool thing about POC is "our warranty is handled by our distributors" great so the shop I bought them from while on a bike trip is super convenient to try and get a replacement. I'll just drive 6 hours for $50 gloves.
  • 1 0
great ideas, but stitch a little Armour on the outside of the pinky finger and you could have charged 82 bucks and called them enduro.
  • 2 1
This looks like a great glove. I am in the market for something with light padding on the knuckles, but the price is to high for this pair.
  • 1 0
Mechanix Utility gloves. I get em free from work, will last a whole season and then some. Why on Earth would people pay so much for gloves? $16 on Amazon. Srsly WTF?
  • 1 0
55 US dollars or 60 euro's, since when is the dollar worth more than the euro? I like POC products, but their pricing is waaaaaaaay off.
  • 2 0
All of you complaining about the price act like your wanna be moto TLD stuff is cheaper.
  • 3 0
$35 is the cap for gloves.. DONE.
  • 3 1
 magician's gloves!
Do they give you powers to pull off tricks?
  • 2 2
i had a pair of these and the stitching came apart on them to, nice for summer riding but for the price they could be put together and more durable!
  • 1 0
"wiping sweat off your brow" a.k.a. wiping snot out of your nose at the bottom of the rippin downhill
  • 1 1
Well, instead of paying 60 bucks for those, I'll get myself 2 pairs of Giro's DND and I?ve got gloves for the next 15 years. Giro's DND are the real deal !
  • 2 0
Do they last longer than three months............ Room goes silent.
  • 1 0
Price aside....theses glove LOOK nicer than almost anything else POC makes.
  • 4 3
Great gloves. But those gripper pads will be good for about a week.
  • 3 1
I think the same, but 3 years later all the globe was a pile of holes, but that pads are like the first day...
  • 1 0
50 ish quid for a pair of gloves??? I cringe paying 20 XD
  • 1 0
All the POC stuff I've ever owned or came across has been junk.
  • 1 1
POC is like the apple of the mtb. way too expensive
  • 3 6
I have these gloves. They're OK. I guess since I still use them they must be doing something right.
