The first issue of Beta’s second volume is out now—and, at 132 pages, it’s meatier than before, packed with columns, profiles, feature stories, and a huge section devoted to the craft of trailbuilding. Leading it all off is longtime North Vancouver-based photographer Dave Smith, with his image of North Shore mainstay rider Steve Vanderhoek, a photo that may seem unconventional for the cover, but one that perfectly captures the spirit of the issue: “In Good Company.”

bigquotesHow can things change so much and yet remain the same? The question of permanence is something that is imbued into the trails and the mountain biking community in North Vancouver. Every day, newer and more aggressive trails are built over the mossy remains of once-famous artifacts. Or old trails are rerouted to find faster lines. But the dark, brooding nature of the Shore remains.

Carried forward by improvements in bike technology and inspired by history, riders like Steve Vanderhoek—who grew up riding the North Shore’s rough and tumble trails—are now speeding in a new age of mountain biking. While I document these riders, I’m often reminded that the defining features of the trails may change, but they’re still just as challenging as they’ve ever been. As if to underscore that sentiment, tattooed onto the digits of Steve’s right hand are the lucky charms he carries with him while riding every white-knuckle chute and monstrous rock feature that he’s punched into the landscape. To him, these simple lines of ink are personal reminders of his passion for mountain biking. And for us, at this ever-changing intersection, they serve to remind that the North Shore is forever the Shore. Shrouded in mist, the trails continue to leave a permanent mark on those that ride these mountains.

Love Vital and check it daily, but have to say, in-between the races, the articles are few and far-between.
  • 1 0
@thingswelike: The reason for lack of substantial stories and features on online media is that generally they don't pay enough for freelancers to make a loving from, whether that's Vital or any other, so the amount of content is much dependent on staff resources. It's why most online is full of much the same content, supplied by the brands —it's just the model we have all helped create, by turning away from print (that paid contributors properly), to ever increasing demands for free content.

@DanMilner: Well as one of the best freelancers, I'm sure you'd know. Reviews still seem to get good coverage, but long-form adventure articles must be a much harder sell online. That's why I'm still a subscriber to the print edition of Singletrack, even though I hardly get time to read it - I appreciate what they try to do and see it as a payment for the value I get from the forum.

Thought my filter wasn't working. Would rather this be lumped in with the sorta beta snippet posts but whatever. I won't fight a losing battle.
  • 6 1
They accidentally made people associate Beta with paywall, so now Beta is like Russia on PB. Bad marketing move. Paying for internet content and print in one subscription is also not exceptionally smart, some people don't want print, some cannot have it. This simply excludes all people Outside the North America form subscribing to Outside ... for me it's a clear massage to go f*ck myself.

We kept this out of the filter because it’s free and I figured there are probably people who don’t want to see stuff they’d have to pay for but would enjoy seeing the free stuff. Honest question, would you like us to include the occasional free stuff from Beta (like this magazine promo or last week’s free film, etc) in the filter? Like is it the Beta brand and what it represents that frustrates some folks more than the fact that a paywall exists? Not really a big deal to me either way, we can do whatever people want here.

@lkubica we have options for international print shipping being announced in the next week or two.

@brianpark: Maybe a separate filter, BETA:Free or similar; if so much could happen, I think it would be a good idea.

Also, the filter doesn't seem to work past the first page or so, if you're going back to check out what articles one might've missed.

@brianpark: I can't speak for everyone (although they seem to be fully capable of speaking their minds anytime Beta is brought up). But it's definitely the actual outlet and content type, not the nuance between paid online, free online, paid print, etc.

I would hazard to guess the people who went all the way out of their way to find the (relatively) hard to find profile option to filter out a newsfeed for Beta stuff are the same people who actually don't like Beta content in general. I mean... When you think of the prices and what not you have to presume there's a bigger reason. We are in a community where people are paying 5k for aluminum bikes or 15k for carbon electric bikes. It's gotta be more than a money issue. It's the content itself.

And the reality is the same people who say "if you dont like beta content just dont click on it and/or ignore it" are offering no more valid advice or criticism then the people who say "i dont like the beta content and I wish for my pinkbike experience to be clean and void of it".

My issue is more a logical thing. I thought the filter was for any Beta posts. So, to then see a Beta post after going out of my way to filter it out I feel like the filter setting had a problem. Like I had just presumed it was incorrectly tagged on accident and 'slipped through'.

The Beta posts are still going to get to a LARGE portion of PB users because the LARGE majority don't care, and then there's the sadomasochistic community who refuse to filter it out but actively want to bring it up in the comments as much as possible cuz it makes them feel good inside. Me personally, I just want website functions to work as I assumed they intended. (Former web designer sounds intensify)

 @brianpark:
HI mate. Just saw your mention of international print shipping? I am hoping it includes Australia as, if so, I will be the first Outside+ Aussie member to sign up for it! Cheers, JW
  • 1 0
@lepigpen: what exactly about the beta content do you not like? The mountain bike content? Or the mountain bike content?

@brianpark there's nothing wrong with beta content, I was a bit against the changes early but beta has good stuff. I dont subscribe but I see value in it and I definately see value in a free print version with 132 pages of MTB content.

@JW1970: I'm 99% sure there will be an option for Australia, but I've just asked the fulfillment folks to confirm.

@JW1970: just confirmed there will be an Australian option. Cheers!

Oh my god, you bunch of precious pinkbike whiners. I’ll let you into a secret, it works on pb and everywhere else on the internet. If you see a link to something you don’t want further information on, don’t click it, and certainly don’t comment on it.
  • 5 2
So, the right way to do it is to comment on the comments of people who shouldn’t comment?
  • 1 0
 Just my .02$
  • 2 1
@FuzzyL: You got it. Now we have a comment on the comment about the comments. How deep shall we go?
  • 4 0
@deadlyhifi: We need to go deeper; site-wide subliminal messaging so people dream angry thoughts in their sleep about angry comments to whingey comments on PB...

I think all the top content should be grouped together under the Beta name for max effect. They could use a catchier title maybe like Beta-max....that has a nice ring. Then the average non-pay content could fall under the very-homogeneous-stuff or 'VHS' part of the site. For fun the two sides of the site could even compete for views to see which one wins out.

I have all the Beta issues from last year. Its pretty sweet to open up a paper magazine. Excited for the incoming issues this year!
  • 7 2
Picked mine up yesterday! Drop In and BIKE magazine were what got me into biking. I've always loved the photos these guys publish. I guess that necessitates me becoming a Sterling Lorence fan.

Everyone should be a Sterling Lorence fan.

I bought the Beta online thing when it was on sale. Not super impressed with the digital issue. Cannot read small print at all. It's quite blurry. I have to use the zoom tools on every page. Not sure if it's my old macbook or what but using the pinch-to-zoom command doesn't enlarge the screen, rather it just skips like 80 pages forward and I have to fumble my way back. I tried to get through a couple of articles and lost interest. I like the content on the Beta site so far but the digital issue is a thumbs down for me. Blister does a decent job with the buyers guide with a similar "magazine feel". Easy to flip through, zoom, click on links to reviews, etc. (Update: I just went back to the Beta issue and realized you can download the PDF and use Adobe or whatever to read, which is crystal clear and not blurry. Still not as smooth as Chrome but overall much better).

12.00 for a mag is out there a bit to far for most of us with so much content free online. it looks good , i picked it up by accident as there was nothing on the cover that looks like a bike mag , if the subscription is priced better for canada i might have another look
  • 4 3
It's the name..every time I hear beta meta ect ect just role my eyes and look the other way..what was wrong with just keeping the bike mag name..what the fck does beta even mean .. doesn't it mean ...weak.its lame regardless
  • 1 0
I think they weren't able to use the BIKE mag name because of the publishing company who owned BIKE not being keen to let them. I could be wrong there, but that was my understanding.
  • 1 0
@JW1970 yep that's right. Outside tried to bring over the BIKE name along with the journalists when A360 shuttered the publication and let everyone go, but A360 weren't willing to sell it at the time. I still think we could take another run at it sometime though...

@brianpark: A belated thank you mate for the update.

Beta = meta: ruining good things although fb sucked from the get go. Ista was solid at first but also got got
  • 6 2
You can’t blame Beta. They made a business choice. It’s those who sold to them that made the decisions that lead to whatever is is you think is ruined.
  • 1 0
@no-good-ideas: Im aware of how businesses work. Just putting the opinion out there. Also those that sold to Beta are no longer making any decision on where PB is headed. Beta is behind that wheel

I thought I had this shit filtered out.
  • 3 3
Nice. Behind the cover is free? is it supposed to be a bait? Or you simply decided to be generous to the cycling Comunity you liv of?
  • 4 1
I fail to understand the Beta hatred here. Is this "Behind the Cover" post not interesting (and it's free right?) ? Is it the fact that the Beta team are highlighting the kind of content their mag runs, in case you missed it, and letting you decide if perhaps you might be interested in either diving in deeper or passing it by? How else do you get to see what the magazine has in its pages? Go to a library, browse it in Barnes and Noble perhaps?
I cant see what the problem is here - the two media (one free and paid for wholly by advertising, and the other paid for advertising and subscribers) occupy different places in the media world — they offer different content, different types of stories, and a different experience (one looking at a screen, the other a physical item held in your hand).
We are at a point where making a living as a freelance contributor (you know, we people that have filled the mtb media with interesting stories for decades) is almost impossible thanks to the low rates offered by online media (due to ad spend being spread too thinly across hundreds of online media), and the fact that the world now expects endless free content. But we have to ask who pays for that content to be produced in any quality way, or do we just settle for brand-backed content that is shared across every platform?
I for one am super chuffed (or 'stoked') to be working with Beta - they have given over serious space in this latest issue to my story that could never go into such depth online on a site like PB.
We are what we make, so we need to be careful about the beast we are creating by our choices. In years to come, I wonder if we will be lamenting the absence of deeper, thoughtful, inspiring stories after insisting that we want everything for free.

 @DanMilner: here, here
  • 7 5
Why is this not tagged properly? It makes filters pointless.
  • 7 6
 Fuck Beta!
  • 1 2
Will beta become the “art culinare” of mtn biking?
  • 4 2
No, Art Culinaire is an independent publication. Beta is part of an ever-growing massive corporate conglomerate.
  • 1 1
@cyclocrossmonkey: the inevitable Beta NFTs in the “Outerverse” are going to blow your mind.
  • 1 2
 Sorry, it is: art culinaire
  • 6 8
why has this come up on my news feed when I've blocked all beta mtb shite
