Trails were connected, champagne was popped, ribbons were cut, chairs were spun and first dirt was claimed as Bike Big White celebrated its official opening. Hundreds of downhill mountain bikers flocked from across British Columbia to test out North America’s newest bike park.

It's not everyday that a new bike park opens. There are a lot of firsts. We're used to arriving at the mountain and seeing a network of trails laid out for us. There's a special kind of energy that you feel out here. Watching the face of the mountain transform, you see the terrain in a whole new way. Hitting the trails for the first time you're part of these incredible shared experiences with other bikers—because it's not just new for you, it's new to everyone! It's an incredible story to be a part of.

With construction implemented by Alpine Bike Parks, the trails have been built by bikers looking to create a truly unique riding destination that speaks to the soul of mountain biking.

“What makes this project so unique is the absolutely stunning terrain and the decision to develop family-friendly trails that meander thorough the alpine environment,” said Judd de Vall, Principal of Alpine Bike Parks. “There are many lift-serviced bike parks, but very few anywhere in the world that provide a flow trail experience above the tree line.”

Peter Plimmer – President, Kris Hawryluik – Bike Park Manager, Theodore Van Orman – Trail Design Lead of Alpine Bike Parks, shared in the honour of laying the final dirt as the top and bottom trail sections connected. They represent all the crews that have come together to make this bike park a reality.

From digging through snow tunnels to extremely dry conditions, the crew has been battling hard and tirelessly against mother nature this build season. It's incredible what they have been able to deliver despite the many obstacles they've encountered. We have an amazingly dedicated crew.

On opening morning of Black Mamba, Trail Design Lead from Alpine Bike Parks, was there to check in on trail conditions and took the time to chat with riders about lines and features as they hit it for the first time. They're not only excited for the design of the trails, but to see how riders of different styles and abilities actually ride it.

As we operate through this build season, the park will close during the week to allow them to have full access for trail maintenance and continued building. With the current wildfire risk in the province of BC, this means no machinery or power equipment at their disposal. Despite the limitation, they are looking to the future and staying positive with the great energy and momentum of our opening weekend.

Some of the trail crew takes a well-deserved break to soak in the village vibe and get a chance to hear what some of the first riders of their work.

We want to thank all the riders from first-timers to the pros who came out to test the first few trail at Bike Big White.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.

Went up on Monday with a buddy. Given the very late snow melt followed by extremely dry conditions, I'm very impressed with what BW and crew has been able to accomplish so far! Everything was very well thought out, from the bike stands, to the games on the grass, to the bike washing station! We road every trail that was open (3). Bumble Bee was great and the most XC trail of the bunch. One suggestion would be to put some more direction signs once you hit the road on the way back to the village. Other than that, can't wait for more trails!

Thanks for the feedback. We're definitely excited for the future of the park. We are looking at adding additional signage to Bumble Bee in a few places along the trail that were mentioned to us from riders.

Looks great! I'm racing the BC Enduro there in a couple weeks. Will there be more trails up and running for the course?

Due to the current fire risks in BC our crews are abiding by provincial orders to keep machinery out of the alpine. It's a bit of an obstacle for building the trails we had planned for this event, but they are looking at options. If you're already registered you'll be the first to received updates for this event. Hope for rain!

@bikebigwhite: cool, thanks for the update. Understandable given the circumstances. I look forward to checking out the bike park, whether in a couple weeks for the race or otherwise.
