Night Adventures With Brett Tippie, Wade Simmons and Ryan Leech

by Brett Tippie
We are celebrating Niterider's 25th Anniversary this year and we are well into the winter season, yet we have seen some of the mildest temperatures in years. With the lack of ice and treacherous conditions in most regions we've noticed people have been Niteriding more than ever. We asked Brett Tippie and some of his friends to show us some Niteriding in Vancouver, BC through his eyes.

bigquotesI've been rocking Niterider lights since the 90's and they have never let me down...from sandboarding the Sahara Desert at midnight to riding my mountain bike down North Shore singletrack after my kids go to bed. Niterider lights let me ride whenever I want! - Brett Tippie

@dyalnmtb508 I can only hope to be able to ride as good as your grandma one day! She must be absolutely amazing! I mean like jaw dropping amazing. Especially after taking into consideration she's a grandma!!

 Is your grandma Danny Macaskill?
That's really cool
  • 20 2
And knocking those three? You should be kicked off the bike forever.
  • 26 3
@dyalnmtb508 Just checked your videos and realized you can't even jump properly, wondering about your grandma...

Some of the nicest raddest boys on the North Shore, throw in Tippie's cute daughter to tug at my heart strings, a mix of urban, jumps and bush rowdy... to me that was banger.

Haven't seen Ryan a long time this is great!
  • 6 1
i think he's doing yoga or something...

Tippie laughing in the forest by night !!!! Smile So good, but maybe a bit scary for the game out there Smile

 Go Tippie's daughter! Awesome .

It was great to see Ryan back on the trials bike. I'm 29 and ridden trials about the same length of time as Danny Macaskill. I don't push myself as much as he has, and I feel i don't need to or want to. Ryan has been a big inspiration to me for many years riding trials and I would say he was one person of the few hero riders I looked upto and still do now. Plus i would be speaking on behalf of Danny who would agree. Also I noticed he's ditched the V-brake rear and gone for a disc brake. Shows hes still going with the times and trying New stuff. Would just like to see more of his ridding Smile

I'm surprised he didn't put a roll mat down and start humming at it with his ankle round his neck.

MacAskill would have ridden the chain fencing instead of hopping over it.

Maybe instead of negatively comparing Ryan Leach to Danny MacAskill, you guys might compare Ryan Leach to his former self, or better yet just realize that he still rides way better than you ever will and that you have no right to be dicks about it. RL achieved many firsts in the sport, is a great influence, and deserves respect for that.

Well said foghorn1. Anyone dissing Ryan is clearly a Joey, Noob, Grom....

Like I said, not taking anything away from it, just pointing out how fast we've progressed.
  • 20 5
..."we've" progressed... as though collectively the mountain bike community has, and you've included yourself in this by the use of "we've", surpassed the riding Ryan is doing in this brief night time edit and further generalizing the riding in this brief nighttime edit to be representative of Ryan's riding in general. I agree with foghorn 1, though wouldn;t even suggest comparing him to yourself but rather just appreciating the edit and the riding. To me riding is bigger than some imaginary socoreboard tallying who represents the biggest and baddest. Its fun. I'll always watch Ryan's riding because he is creative and has rediculous control. Further, I would never suggest I am part of something that has moved beyond what Ryan did in this video, as I beleive you did evomtb, whether intended or not. Loved the edit and always a pleasure watching legends. With icey snow here and no fatbike I haven't been out on a bike in a while and can't wait for this season so thanks for the downseason stoke.

"There are quite a few street trials riders who I have looked up to and respected for years–riders like Chris Akrigg, Martyn Ashton, Jeff Lenosky, Ryan Leech." (adventureblog.nationalgeographic.com/2011/01/21/rider-danny-macaskill-interview)

- Danny MacAskill -

Shame on the few who dissed Ryan
  • 11 1
Seriously? The people making disparaging remarks about Ryan's style...or how old these guys are...or how they can't ride...aren't over the age 30. Or 40.

It's different over here. Less to prove, more fun and fewer broken bones (well maybe not). Real skills without flash.

Our priorities shift a bit as we age, no? Cos I know I'm not gonna send it the way I used to...gotta go to work and I can't be broken all the time.

And anyway...I want to ride...everyday...and sometimes have a beer with my friends afterwards...I want to enjoy all of life..not spend time in a hospital cos of a dumb trick.

So go try and be Danny M if ya want...just don't get impaled on a piece of rebar while yer fooling yerself.
  • 12 1
All I can say is that Ryan is creating a set of amazing skills lessons so that simple Joes can get better at trails, to get any sort of start. And those trails skills will quickly translate to "Enduro" skills Big Grin . From what I've been I got quite good at wheelieing thanks to him Wink He was also an awesome integrity coach, and well I lost some lately, with parental depression involved, (what everyone can see by number and content of my dumb comments) but I am back on my way up and thanks to him I have tools to get myself up. . So... take it easy and calm your judgements a bit based one short edit... as to his Yoga? WTF - that's a gigantic part of him, why do you think Danny M is not supersticious in some way? There's plenty of people appreciating his Yoga classes and courses.

I feel stupid for defending him, because I don't really think he needs, I rather encourage you to check out what he is about these days Wink Awesome dude!

In no way was I discrediting him, or placing myself above his standard. I appreciate his massive part in trials history anyone who disputes that is an idiot. I said this riding is dated in comparison which I stand by. Sl1200 - To dispute there has been no progression in 20 years is equally stupid. I really can't be arsed getting into a full blown essay debate, but take the comments with a pinch of salt eh.
  • 6 1
anyone dissing ryan clearly doesn't remember having their minds blown when he rode the chain in the collective
  • 4 1
evomtb. Yep. Bikers now are doing things that few if any could have guessed a few years ago, however, that does not make Ryan's riding "dated" and further, just because some riders are doing some amazing things, does not mean that most riders, and more likely all riders, could a) enjoy watching Ryan's riding or b) learn a thing or two from it. But... to each their own. No animosity... just didn't agree with the belief that Ryan's riding is incredibly "dated."

flag evomtb (Feb 7, 2015 at 7:39) (Below Threshold)
So would that not make it dated...?

Depeche Mode are pretty dated but I still enjoy them, and there are a fair few bands that could learn a thing or two from them. All I was pointing out was how fast riding has progressed since ryan was in his prime.

Bloody hell, I've not been in Vancouver for fourteen years and I still recognise bits of that. Bloody brilliant video of people just having fun on bikes. Thanks PB

Every time I drive by that brick wall at the base of the waterfall fountain at 1500 W. Georgia St. in Vancouver I'm taken back to the NSE videos with Super T dropping onto it from the wall above, and someone getting a wheel caught in the gap between the angled and vert walls trying a wall ride. Brings back great memories. Fun to see it in this vid. Love Ryan. Wade's always been the king of flow, and Tippie's got that energy that makes one want to ride NOW and loud. Great homage to night riding and some wonderful people who can also ride bikes quite well.

Great video.

Urbane riding is back. I used to ride urban but crashing hurts too much. Now if I had Ryans skills................Only Ryan has Ryans skills glad to see him in the spot lite again. My fave part, The grom nite riding. That was sweet. Shooting nite rides in the forest is still terribly boring. Sorry. How bout using those poweful lites to illuminate parts of the forest. Still waiting to see a a sublime nite ride shot in the forest.
