Forces and Motion Assembly

by Tyler Maine

The Specialized AllRide Tour, in conjunction with Cog Wild Mountain Bike Tours... presented the first ever Forces and Motion assembly for Obsidian Middle school 7th and 8th Grade science classes in Redmond, OR.

We have some work to do to refine the presentation, but we're on our way to getting more bikes into schools using relevant curriculum!

I feel like with a little more preparation and public speaking lessons on the riders part this could make for a very good presentation.
The way it seems right now is that the riders pulled the ol college "cram the night before" and weren't really confident in what they were trying to teach.

Simply;
The riding was there, but the real point of the whole presentation was lost due to their inability to effectively convey the science behind it.

I had the same impression. For example when the teacher asked what would be different if they had a gravity drop in. The rider response was that they would be less tired. I think the teacher was going for something more in the context of physics. Either way, getting the young people excited about education is always a plus.

As you can tell by listening to them talk, they are riding AND answering questions about the riding. Its like asking a sprinter to do mental math after a sprint. What do you expect?
The teacher WAS trying to get a real nice physics-related answer about a drop in, BUT, to a rider its all the same, equal amounts of speed, no matter what the force used to get there, ie. drop or pedal. So maybe lets just support the fact these kids were watching and school for once WAS interesting, thats the REAL POINT of this presentation, and it was far from lost.
Go out and ride.

stanction vs lowers and rear shock shaft vs shock body interfaces. in and out, in and out, in and out.....

pretty sure you can!!!! physics is just the start!
how 'bout economics? social justice, labor relations as it relates to bicycle production in asia vs US/Canada? (electro)chemistry and bike production? engineering for production planning and execution? thermodynamics and the need to fuel before, during and after riding? biology and metabolic/catabolic processes? health class/PE and fitness/exercise? foreign language and competing in world cup events? learn french so you can understand CG? spanish to kick it with Andreu? photography class and snapping pics/video for promotion/marketing/creative content//? typing as it benefits incessant trolling on PB? Wink bring it on - the examples are EVERYWHERE!

I teach middle school science, and I really want to use my DH bike as the perfect example of multiple simple machines all working together. Perfect tie-in to the curriculum!

was he gunna eat it at 1:45?
  • 1 0
 ya i think so
  • 2 0
yeah that 3 looked a bit squirly especially for that steep wood landing
  • 12 0
I 450'd to my ass and slid down.. yes it was squirly, but it was completley in control hahah. Jumping at 8 in the morning is harder than it looks.
  • 3 0
oh, i guess it looked worse because they cut it just before you bailed.
  • 1 0
Also, the rider in the red hoody at 1:45 is about to bite it on his 360 when the camera cuts out. Looks like he over rotated.

ha ha. it wasn't until my physics class that i figured out why Yahama called one of its bikes VMax, or why Cannondale called one of its bike series Delta V. skool's cool.
