now have the snowboarder on a DH track.
  • 47 3
I feel the mtn biker could have tucked into a more aerodynamic position on some of the straights that he wasn't pedaling on. Other than that I am stokd, didn't think he had the win
  • 40 0
it was pretty flat at the bottom.. I'm not totally sure it was fair that he could be pedaling.. I'm happy to see the win though.. and yeah, turn the tables and that snowboarder would get demolished.

When I saw the DHer I thought he could have used a more efficient bike for this but then again the snowboarder's tuck isn't so good and I bet he doesn't have a boardercross killing machine either. It's just for fun.

Lets see a BMXer V.s a bag of Doritos at 4:25 int he afternoon, gonna need slow-mo to catch that action.

  • 6 0
Wow! I did not thought they would be so close, didnt think the mountainbiker would keep up. very exciting to see! One thing i didnt like was that the mountainbiker started a little bit before the snowboarder and i think thats why he was after the mountainbiker in the beginning. I think the reason it was flat at the end was that they thought the snowboarder would have an advantage in the slope and the biker on the flat. (: Real cool, not dumb at all no-ah !
  • 2 0
Anyways in biger snow rider cant ride, or will ride slower than snowboared, on small, and hard snow he is better, without big turns oufcourse,
  • 6 0
The ending was to flat. not fair for the snowboarder. now put a foot of powder on the track and see how the biker does..
  • 2 0
thats all fine and dandy but im not bing my mtb to slopes anytime soon, in powder it would be usless jsu like how snow board would be useless on dirt.
  • 3 0
As a biker and a snowboarder I feel that this was not fair. I'm better than that snowboarder so obviously they didn't look too hard to find him and the snowboarder has no way of propelling himself forward on flat parts. Both use gravity and momentum to advance but the biker does have and advantage with his drivetrain
  • 2 0
its like a biker racing a chainless biker.

the biker had to do so much more work than the boarder. If he didnt win i would of been pissed
  • 42 13
People! Its kind of a joke! Its not meant to be taken seriously! Also, notice that the snowboarder didn't start tucking till the second half? He didn't think the bike stood a chance at first.

Most importantly, a Skier would have kicked both their trash

  • 22 11
Skiing is much more fun than snowboarding!!! i do both and if i would have to choose i would choose the skis every time.
  • 17 1
Both are fun and very different. Depends on what you like.
  • 45 2
I snowboard and i will admit that skiing has every advantage over snowboarding. No blind spot, way faster, more control, you are able to ride way gnarlier stuff on them, you dont get stuck on flat spots, bigger tricks in free skiing. Downhill skiiers have among the biggest balls in the world. I havent seen any snowboarders race down a mountain at 150kph. Calling skiiers "wienies" shows how ignorant you are.

MTB is still my favourite by a long long distance.
  • 5 0
Fair play for saying that i agree in every point except i find snowboarding more fun don't know why it just feels more natural to me. Skiing seems a bit tame unless your amazing but really enjoy both! And I love Dh more than anything Smile
  • 5 0
Hey Sanchez, I used to snowboard but now I ski and don't look back. I find it a lot more like riding DH, as you are facing forward and is one of many reasons why I like it better. Can't say I've ever been accused of being a wienee on a bike, snowboard or skis, but if you're putting out the challenge come on up to Whistler and I'm pretty sure we'll find a good crew of people to crush you in the summer or winter, no matter what they ride. "that simple."
  • 10 3

  • 1 0
Another one of THOSE arguments!!! They are different sports! Its like roller blading vs skateboarding, sure you can throw a 1440 on rollerskates and not a skateboard but its STILL rollerblading. Not saying skiing is in any way shape or form like fruit booting but you just cant compare snowboarding and skiing.
  • 2 0
I do both. In fact, I teach both. I think they are equal.
  • 4 1
Skiing is significantly faster than snowboarding, no question, and a skier would've easily won. In terms of what's more "hardcore", they're all action sports, and you can take them as far as you want in terms of skill and how difficult the stuff you do is.
  • 2 3
@samsemtex. Not every advantage. Skiing is rad and definitely faster, but IMO snowboards take the cake when it comes to shredding pow. It's no coincidence that powder skis look more and more like snowboards every year. Lack of control and getting stuck on flat spots betrays some inexperience.
  • 2 1
@Dirtesanchez - Skiing is for guys that can't ride snowboards? If snowboarding wasn't easier this joke wouldn't exist:

Q: What is the difference between a snowboard beginner and a snowboard instructor?
A: Three days.

Having said that, you'll pry my Burton Frontier from my cold dead fingers (probably VERY cold fingers).

You want a real joke, slap this on for size.

A man sits is a court room for murdering his wife, and his wifes lover. The judge reads "You are convicted to one life sentence for the murder of your wife with a hammer" . . . . immediately a man stands from the back of the courtroom and yells "YOU a*shole F*CKING C*NT" and sits down.

The Judge with a disgusted face then says to the man on trial, "You are also convicted of a second life sentence for killing your wifes lover, with a hammer"

Once again, the man stand up and yells "You F*ucking a*shole sh*t C*nt F*cker"

The court room in silence, the judge says "SIR, please be quiet in this court room" and the man from the back of the room says. "Every weekend for the last 6 months I have asked to borrow this pricks hammer and he told me he didn't have one"

And just for the record, the MTB guy and Snowboard guy both shredded one for all the homies
  • 2 1
All action sports are rad- trying to say one is better than another is a waste of time because it's so subjective. We should open our eyes and realise that we should be stoked for eachother that we have all found something that brings so much to our lives.

Whilst on the topic of jokes though-

2 spastics go up to an ice-cream van and say, 'Can we have 2 ice cweams pwease?' to which the driver responds, 'Yeah of course, what flavour would you like?'

'It doesn't matter, we're gonna drop them anyway.....'

  • 14 1
There are a lot of factors that could have pushed this one way or the other. Like the comment at the top says a snowboard isn't gonna do well on a DH course, but then again a DH bike isn't gonna fair well dropping into an AK heli line or even a course with some turns. I agree that race should have ended before it flattened out and that pedaling def helped the guy on the bike, just like poles and skating would have helped a skier. In the end though this doesn't prove bikes are faster than snowboards (or skiers) on snow. What it proves is that there are still ways this sport continues to surprise us and THAT is F'ing cool.
  • 14 0
Haha at all these people trying to analyse this and shit, it was just a bit of fun stop taking it so seriously. Great video
  • 10 1
lol.. i am german, so i understand what the commentator is saying. "The Snowboarder has much more grip than the mountainbiker" Thats such a Fail.. in reality the snowboarder got nearly no grip (otherwise he would be stuck on the snow) and the biker got enough grip, otherwise couldnt steer or accelerate the bike.

But hey its a saturday evening show, about bettings... so the last flat part was put in to give the biker a chance to win the race. B'cause he bet on winning the race.
  • 3 0
Who the fuck neg propped the above comment, it makes the most sense out of all of them!

I think you're confusing grip with 'friction'... Mountain bikier has a lot of 'friction' so rolls slower, snowboard has very 'little friction' so slides quickly... The snow boarder does have more grip, long strip of sharp metal edge vs small patch of knobbly rubber. On foot, on ice would you have more grip with rubber sole shoes or ice skates? think about it :-)

The Video was based off a bet. The rider won his bet, congrats, all of you who are like "it should have gone this way or that, who cares both guys prob had a blast doing it, had a few beers later, high fived and probably agreed on one thing.." they should follow a skidoo, down with a tow rope and launch the gaps/rollers/step downs/step ups and wedge airs and high 5 after having one hell of a blast going as big as they could on the course...Btw all the boarding vs. skiing stuff..Its all good and all in the eye of the beholder..

Have a BLAST RIPPING downhill on BIKES, SNOWBOARS OR SKIS!! CAUSE THEY ALL RULE!
  • 6 0

  • 2 0
Cool! But Gian Simmen won the Olympic Games 1998 in Halfpipe and not in Snowboard-Cross, if they'd have gone down a pipe the winner would be Gian! But still epic that the biker won Smile
  • 4 1
try it chainless. that flat section on the bottom was an unfair advantage to the mountain biker. all in all was a great race to watch!
  • 1 0
yeah but he will have a hell of a lot more drag: brake rub and wheels digging into the snow
  • 2 0
on hard packed snow like that theres more drag on the snowboarders base then there is on that bike. pedal power can trump the drag, all the snowboarder can hope for is to tuck
  • 2 0
In the test run the snowboarder was faster. I think it was a fair competition because the biker had to put much more effort into it.
  • 1 0
I think the last long flat straight away to the finish line was kinda unfair to the snowboarder since he has no drivetrain and couldn't pedal the entire time like Andreas did.
  • 1 0
makes you think tho.. is the board professionally waxed? is the bikes tires studded like if the board wasent waxed any the tires are studded thats why the biker won u gotta think about that shit
  • 2 0
That was so dumb, obviously the mountain biker is going to win with a 100 yard flat at the end of the race. A snowboarder obviously can't make his own speed.
  • 1 0
The bike rider gains more speed in the air, because with the bike he is heavier. The end wasn't very fair i agree. A skier probably could have beaten him. Sweet article and what a ballsy biker
  • 1 0
That snowboarder was dumping speed the whole way down the hill. Plus he was riding a p-tex base board. They should have a had a Pro SBX rider instead of a pipe rider. How ever it is much harder to ride a bike down that hill.
  • 4 0
i would like to buy a beer to the man who came up with this idea

BIKERS FTW! next we race seadoos on water.
  • 1 0
we could race a wakeboarder on water...but nobody gets a boat
  • 1 0
Get rid of the flat at the bottom and it would have been fair. You could see whenever either one didn't land smooth, momentum was lost. Put skis on the bike and it would have won by a long shot. Good stuff either way.
  • 2 0
Couldn't give 2 shts who won?

Of course they had some jibber jabber race him on a twintip board... probably not even a sintered base. If that boarder was actually a racer instead of a park rider the board would have smoked the bike.
  • 2 0
The only reason the MTB'er won was the last straight, they were together till then, Bit lame i reckon to be honest
  • 1 0
LETS PUT THAT SAME SNOWBOARDER OR EVEN A SKIER ON DIRT THE MOUNTAIN BIKES TERRITORY AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS...BIKES RULE SNOW SPORTS DROOL WOOOTWOOOOT

  • 1 0
Snowboarding is still sicker though. Pretty unfair at the end with the flat, but close race no matter what!
  • 1 0
Who knew pedalling a bike down a hill would be faster than sliding on a greased plank of wood
  • 1 0
Info: In practice the snowboard guy always won, but before the final run it snowed a bit, which slowed him down.
  • 2 0
Wetten dass? --> watched it on TV ^^...great !
  • 6 4
"The winner may surprise you!"..........No, he has a f*cking chain
  • 4 1
He's on a FR bike, on snow, the snowboard being designed for the snow, the FR bike being designed for dirt. The bike would have too much drag to cope with if he couldn't pedal, so the fact he had a chain, only made it a little more fair.
  • 1 0
Okay well well you "surprised" simple as that. That is all I said. I wasnt surprised about it as he had a chain - In my opinion quite a simple race. The bike could have pedaled in many places but chose not to, to make the race closer at the end. Obviously with your superior knowledge of bikes VS snowboards, this was an extremely surprising outcome. How foolish of me to imagine it would be simple, I better hang my head in shame!
  • 1 2
Your initial comment implies that, in your opinion, it would have been a different outcome if he didn't have a chain, this is obvious, as if he had no chain, gravity alone would now be able to overcome the drag created by the tires needed just to maintain grip =)
  • 2 0
In reply to your last comment, thanks for basically agreeing with me
  • 2 0
This was my exact thought - a snowboarder relies only on gravity for propulsion. The cyclist has gravity and the additional "boosts" of pedalling. Fun race no doubt, but not a surprising outcome in the slightest, especially with the flat finish!

Also, when you consider the size of the jumps, they're designed to be hit at a certain speed - too slow and you hook up, too fast and you risk overshooting (anybody remember Gee from a few years ago?).

So the speed for the majority of the race is dictated to within a few mph by the track, but the MTB has the advantage of pedalling out of the gate, when the speed drops and again on the flat finish.

Like I say; fun, but not a surprising outcome.
  • 1 1
I know I do agree with you, it was just the manor in which you said it to start with, I was expecting the biker to win, but he still had to work hard =)

Kind of pointless if you ask me, mtb = summer and snowboard = winter. Two entirely different seasons and different sports, still a neat idea and it was fun to watch!
  • 2 0
Thats way off, mtb is on the snow, Many people don't even understand how good a full suspension bike is in the snow, even jumping on snow. I wish more resorts would make courses like that here in the usa and allow mountain bikes on parts of the mt in winter and summer.

They already did a real speed race btw bike vs ski vs board. The ski was first, then bike then board its science not skills. I think a good skier would have won this race. Boddie Miller vs Aron Gwin at Mammouth this weekend?????
