bigquotesI still think back to when legends like Tomac, Insane Wayne and Myles Rockwell were nailing Mammoth Mountain runs and clocking 60+ mph on hardtails with rigid forks as one of the original downhill races in MTB history. The history of the Kamikaze holds an allure few events can match in North America, and we are honored to be able to bring our brand of media coverage to the Kamikaze Bike Games! - Julian Coffey, Pinkbike

Bill Cockroft, Senior Vice President at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, is also excited about the partnership,
bigquotesPinkbike.com has amazing coverage of events that is second to none. This partnership will help give everyone access to the Kamikaze Bike Games. We are looking forward to a long lasting partnership.

Opinions are free to give and free to take - when opinions are not free then you should worry. So express yourself as the song says.

LOL that received a whole lot of negative feedback. Started off as a joke got out of control. My Bad . what I meant to say is that even though we started it and still are the best we have the best research and technology and the best companies. ( TREK, Specalized, FOX, Intense, Santa Cruz ) It will all come back as the mecca. Whistler watch out...

Of course you have some of the closed minded morons on here who want to bash on peoples opinions, mojojojoaf said it best, " Opinions are free to give and free to take - when opinions are not free then you should worry."

@drewloring, youre an clown bro, why do you have an american flag if youre bashing america? be grateful for the freedoms men have fought and died for that not everyone in the world has.

bring on the neg props Wink

All the men and women who have died for our country didn't do it so you can bash it they did it protect our freedom!....on a happier not this looks like it will be really fun I'm hopin to make it up for the enduro or dual slalom or both.

Hey Pinkbike- If you are going to delete comments, at least unsubscribe me from the thread.

I must rally the forces of public opinion and neg prop to death those that oppose. HAHAHAHAHA. On the other hand- yeah for Mammoth bringing back an American Race Classic. The Dual Eliminator!
  • 4 1
@rublefish225 - as someone who spent years in the US Army I can tell you right now we have not fought to "protect our freedom" since 1775 and 1860 during the Civil War. The government utilizes the cliché catchphase "fight for our freedoms" in order to get all the patriotic, national-pride-filled citizens rallied up so we can invade whatever country we want.. We aren't fighting to protect our freedoms in Afghanistan - we are there to protect Afghanistan from threats such as Al Qaeda and the Taliban, so really it's just like how we occupied France and Germany to protect the jews from being slaughtered. yes we are doing great things for those docile citizens who do need help - but we are not "protecting our freedoms." stop being a sheep.
  • 2 1
@angry nipples - as someone who has spent time in the US Marine Corp, 0351, I can say that you are only partially correct. If you recall an oath you, I and every service member swears to uphold during intake, we fight to protect american's civil liberties and to protect this country from foreign and domestic enemies. You sir should be ashamed of yourself, out of all the young immature kids on this site, I would expect the one who has served to know what privileges we have and what our brothers before us fought and died to protect. Apparently you were never taught honor courage and commitment, its because of that ideal that this once great country is going down the drain. Pity.

 Thank you prestonDH.
  • 3 0
prestondh - I wholeheartedly agree that this country is going down the shitter and that's the main reason i'm not very proud to be an American, it's why I'm so cynical about Americans in general. I have plenty of battle-buddies down range at the moment and I keep them in my thoughts daily. They are making a direct change in the dynamics of other war torn countries' governments. but you and I both know that we're not doing it alone.. we have Australians, the UK, German, Afghan militaries etc on our sides fighting with us. I just get sick of how pompous we come off and really wish that the American ego would deflate a bit. but kudos for your service.

I'm not even going to get into this debate but to say your are not very proud to be an american sucks. You can go 60 miles south in TJ and realize that you have a great thing and should be proud. About my comments earlier they were intended as a joke. The reality is since we are the greatest country we have the greatest technology and set the trends in mountain biking by the extensive research and development and the technology that no one else has. Prove to me we don't. I'm just excited that we have a great place to ride that will have a great contest close to home. I am half way to mammoth from you, stop by and we can shred the local trails and have a beer. And talk about how good we got it.

everyone just shut up, lighten up, and realize it's the internet. nobody means what they say, so getting upset won't change anyone or anything. as Rodney King said, "can't we all just get along?"
  • 3 1
Rodney King Overdosed on drugs and drowned to death in his own pool on witch the tax payers ( myself ) bought him. Just a little FYI....
  • 2 0
i'm glad you caught my joke. Rodney King encouraging civility is like Kim Jong il lecturing about international diplomacy.
  • 2 2
How many Americans does it take to hijack a Canadian's funny comment about dinosaurs and turn it into a debate about war, freedom, and how great their country is?
  • 17 0
Great work Mammoth and PB - this place is iconic.
It was all so different back then.
My first-ever run there (in the mid '90s) was on a Giant ATX hard-tail - in lycra and an egg shell.
Went over the bars at about 70km/h and had to race it the next morning...
I like today better
  • 3 0
That first picture of JMC racing Myles Rockwell... well it was the race (or two races) that put McRoy on the map, got him signed to a proper team and made the legend. Cracking memories. Bring back the Reebok Eliminator!
  • 17 1
 2 things

1.Tomac needs to come out of retirement just to do this race.

2. DUAL SLALOM!!! F*CK YEAH!!!!! USA! USA! USA!
  • 3 0
i completely agree with both things
  • 3 0
Both you're ideas are spot on man!long live slalom
  • 6 0
Would love to see Kovarik in the Kamikaze. Right up his alley...
  • 1 0
Tomac has already come out of retirement before for this race in 2005... Kovarik was there so was sam hill. www.usacycling.org/results/index.php?year=2005&id=2016&info_id=5268

Time for missy to start wooing her probation officer into letting her leave the state to participate.
  • 7 1
I dont think anyone wants to be wooed by Missy!
  • 1 0
I feel totally uninformed... what the f*ck happened to her??
  • 1 0
Angrynipples -- Missy was convicted of drug trafficking after being arrested while trying to move nearly 400 lbs of weed across the Canadian border a few years back.
  • 1 1
I'm all for pro mtb athletes being allowed to smoke - weed and mountain biking go hand in hand - but 400lbs is a bit excessive. sucks to hear that she got too reckless with it
  • 2 0
Yes but the weed wasn't for junkies, it was medical grade pot for medical users who needed it. Many US states don't have medical marijuana laws and those that do often have crappy distribution systems that don't take into account the impoverished state of many with chronic medical conditions. The judge took that into account when she was given time served and five years supervised release as a sentence. She wasn't sentenced like a major drug trafficker would have been. Canada as a whole has medical marijuana but the distribution system is terrible. The government was SUPPOSED to implement its own growing system to distribute medical grade weed with a constant THC level and all sorts of quality controls but never actually did so. The courts have struck down various parts of the law as is which is why most users have court ordered exemptions and grow their own currently.

They should have a retro class for old bikes. Ya know, ones with 80mm of suspension, v-brakes, 120mm stems, bar ends and 26" wheels.
  • 16 2
 26" is NOT retro
  • 3 0
Yeah, but, that kevlar disc is truly retro
  • 2 0
+ cantilever brakes that are purple anodized. yes!
  • 1 0
took the thought right out of my mind there, a retro class would be awesome and bloody hardcore too!
  • 2 0
oddly enough I have the perfect frameset to build a bike for the kamikaze... a Verlicchi DH (the frame Cully used to win the 1992 world dh title on) with matching marzocchi xc500 fork.
  • 13 0
Bringing DH racing back to its home, thank Mammoth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 4 0
It would be good to get a mention for Jason McRoy - the guy chasing down Rockwell int he main pic. His was an inspirational story - local ripper in NE England, his family saved up so that he could cross the Atlantic to ride THE big DH event of the day. A bit of David & Golliath battle ensued and McRoy eventually finished 2nd to Rockwell, but got him big kudos and a factory ride with Specialized.
  • 8 0
 Hell yeah
  • 2 1
indeed! my buddy and i did this race back when were first got into dh; had to have been 2000 or 2001 iirc.
  • 3 0
Cool that they bring the event back, I remember watching in awe in the 90's but now that trail just kinda looks like Mt Fire Road. I'm sure there must be more interesting ways of getting down that mtn. *gets ready for the shower of negative props*
  • 1 0
When the Kamikaze first started,it was the place to see unreal bikes and amazing tech, like 1 inch travel, and the tioga disc drive.I wonder what we see at the upcoming event, bars mounted to stanchions, moto g.p style, for the classic Kamikaze tucked look.hmmmmm....maybe not.
  • 2 0
this will always be the ONE race that got me into mtn biking. Tomac back in the early 90s on a fully rigid bike just mobbin down Kamikaze with cantilever brakes, narrow tires, narrow bars, long stem, bar ends, purple ano.
  • 5 0
When you're running cantilever brakes, full mobbin is the only option you have.
  • 1 0
 Nice one...
  • 4 0
I'm definitely going to race that on my cruiser
  • 2 0
It would be epic to see Tomac (John) and Herbold do a lap. But John did just break his arm and dislocate his opposite thumb trying to keep up to his son on a training ride
  • 4 0
Too bad I have a 2013 Fox 34 CTD. No high speed turns for me!
  • 3 1
Kamikaze is the only place I've been passed on a bike when going faster than 50mph. Love that trail/road.
  • 2 4
Obviously you're not a roadie... 50mph is pretty common anyplace with actual mountains.
  • 4 1
 No we obviously aren't
  • 1 0
Funny, I feel like riding the kamikaze is safer than riding on any given highway.
  • 1 0
Unless they've fine stone dust covered the fire road and packed it solid all of a sudden, I don't think its safer given the crashes that used to happen during races on it.
  • 1 0
I still prefer sticks and stones over steel and texting.
  • 3 1
If its like the old days with smoother dirt shorter travel 29ers would be perfect, l would imagine.
  • 2 1
It's funny how your from Nebraska and know this without riding it. I rode my DH bike there and it was way over kill. That trail is too smooth and slow for an 8inch bike. Bet u a smaller travel bike wins.
  • 3 0
I know more then corn and football. (-:
  • 1 1
i think he's referring more to the fact that Mammoth is notorious for being a barren moonscape.
  • 1 1
No, they should burn in hell.
  • 1 0
 what?
  • 2 0
good thing they have the sign to tell you which gravel road is for cars, and which is for racing bikes on
  • 2 0
Please tell me this isn't a cruel joke!??@?!? The KAMIKAZE is back?!?!?!?!?! Can I get a f*ck Yea!?!?!
  • 1 0
It's great to see a comeback of an event that I could only read about in chronicle articles Wink
  • 1 0
Yes!!! Race the NORBA nationals there in the 90's. I did 55+ mph on a Foes Weasel with v-brakes. Ha! Love it!
  • 1 0
Good Lord look at the width of those bars.....those were the days
  • 1 0
that was wide for it's time too! and they rocked like 100mm stems too.
  • 1 0
And rubber skinsuits, tension disc rear wheels, and 60T chainrings. Yes kids, times have changed.
  • 1 0
The short stems were 135. Usual length 150 mm
  • 1 0
thats right, 120mm was considered "DH"
  • 1 0
Haha, how times change, now 35mm is short and 50mm is usual.
  • 1 0
 try 135mm stems.
  • 1 0
HELL YEAH! I've been making plans to ride out there next month!
  • 1 0
Hell yeah I'm going to race the legendary kamakazie
  • 1 0
60+mph on a hard tail is much easier than a full sus
  • 1 0
Looks fun as fuck though ha
  • 1 0
See y'all there... I wouldn't miss this one for the world. Smile
  • 1 0
Rode it on a fatbike and wetsuit!
