Video: Bike Hockey in the 2018 Olympics?

Feb 14, 2014 at 11:28
by Tyler Maine

The 2014 Olympic Games are underway in Socchi, Russia and the view from Canada is that an important sport is missing from the medals. No, it is not moguls, it is not speed-skating and it is not cross-country snowboarding - but rather the breakout winter sport Bike Hockey.

First imagined on the fresh ice of a northerly Canadian pond, this breakout sport has seen conversion of several well known NHL players who prefer the two-wheeled bicycle to ice skates. Prompting great controversy these athletes have requested be be kept anonymous through this trepadacious time.

Red Racer Beer and Norco Bicycles are officially campaigning to make Bike Hockey an official Olympic Sport. If you support Bike Hockey in the 2018 Winter Olympics please take a minute and support the cause by signing the official petition and by talking about it using the hashtag #BikeHockey2018. More information can be found at bikehockey2018.com.

A special thanks to Central City Brewers and Distillers for supporting this amazing sport.

 Still more interesting than curling.
  • 17 5
 just googled that...wow...just wow...

you didn't know what curling was? It's the offspring of drunk janitors with rocks in a frozen area of the world.
  • 3 2
Hey great idea there, this passive style comedy has elevated me to a lofty position!

You googled Curling ? If I must be honest, I'm a bit baffled about the fact you didn't know what curling was... I thought it was like sharting your pants , you never want to take place with such an event , nor would you ever want to see it take place.... but everyone knows what sharting your pants is all about.

Yeah they're American curtisf. As a whole, we pay more attention to their shit than they do to ours. Take all your shit (in your panties & otherwise) elsewhere. If I must be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if you think Alaska is part of Canada.
  • 12 2
I have always, for some reason, found curling interesting to watch!
  • 12 2
freeride-forever, your comment was first of all totally off topic, and secondly, you sounded like an ass to about 300 million people, and tens of thousands of Americans on Pinkbike. You sounded like an asshole in general to anyone.
  • 9 2
Actually as far as I can tell, most people think Alaska is a totally separate country from Canada or the US, especially when it comes to shipping.

according the wikipedia washinton state has 3 curling clubs. british columbia has 90+. canadians seems to be more into curling. how about bandy? what the hell is that game all about
  • 4 1
i have a feeling you would go through a lot of spokes playing this.

How about Slopestlye for the summer Olympics? I mean there is also Ski and Snowboard Slopestyle...
  • 6 0
Exactly what i thought and for the olympics in rio as we saw in arrival there is potential for a slopestyle course
  • 12 0
I'm not sure its a good idea, if you look at snowboarding slopestyle there is a large part of the community that hates what the Olympics has done to their sport. Personally i think DH would be more suited to the Olympics.
  • 6 0
It also took a long time for the Olympics to recognize ski and snowboard slopestyle as a real sport, so there is probably a good bit of waiting see how we can barely get into x games

Your right guys, but i think the diffrence to ski/snowboard slopestyle is the variety of tricks. I'm not too familiar with ski or snowboard slopestyle, but i noticed that its kinda all about doing as much rotations as you possibly can! In MTB we have such a big variety of tricks, not only doing as much rotations as possible. We have of course 360's and 720's, but we also have flips (in ski and snowboard too, but i only saw 1 or 2 flips in the entire contest!) and much other tricks, especially Combinations. What i want to say is, that Mountainbike Slopestyle could be more interesting for new spectators, they would definitely see that we have much more diffrent and creative tricks than our wintersports friends!
(That's at least my opinion^^)

100% DH is worthy to be in the Olympics there is nothing that comes close. The closest thing is boarder cross and that's pretty much 4x for snow. Downhill skiing is like high speed slalom. There's not much that rivals the level of "DAMN" that wc downhill tracks and riders can provide.

The issue how will doing this change the sport that is the worry, while exposure and recognition of our sport and athletes would be great id hate the sports image and community change, I think riding culture is one of the best we have its very accepting and friendly with good characters.
  • 3 0
@DHMF I wouldn't judge a sports difficulty of creativity based on not having flips, in skiing and boarding back flips have been played out so hard that they are not worth doing to much any more and yes there are a lot of rotations but those rotations are also off axis and ranging in the 720 up range, and while there isn't any "combo tricks" they do a lot of thing in those rotations that make up the trick such as the kangaroo flip and the bow and arrow. I'm not saying that winter slope is harder or more fun to watch I like to watch both but to the common public all they will see with mtb slope is a couple rotations some legs and arms flailing about and some flips just like you did with winter sports its all about knowledge of the sport

@giveitall14: Your right, but what i tried to say is, that it's easier to see a diffrence between the tricks in Mountainbiking than in Ski/Snowboard for a spectator who watches a slopstyle event for the very first time. Of course there are many grabs and stuff, but my impression (i haven't watched Ski or Snowboard slopestyle that much) is that everybody tries to make the most rotations. It's hard to see these diffrent grabs and if the trick is backside or frontside for "usual" spectator. It's like normal and oppo tricks, many spectators won't see whether it's oppo or not. (My English is not the best, but i hope you can understand what i try to say^^)

IOC is doing good for a change. Bringing in ski/snowboard freestyle sports into the mix is one of the best things they have ever done. I never thought Olympics would include DH biking and Slope Style biking into the schedule but after watching Sochi I believe it is going to happen. Considering IOC is trying to become "cool" with the younger crowd, they need to inject some style and speed into the summer Olympics too. It's going to happen, screw the X-Games for taking slope style biking for granted. Summer Olympics will one day showcase the push bike sports. DHMF, I agree biking slope style will have much more appeal in the long run because it's a summer event. There is lots of differences in the biking/boarding/skiing slope style events. But the biggest difference biking slope style tricks have over the other two is that it is very difficult to land backwards/switch on bikes. And the mass and size of the bikes slows down any type of rotation. Ski's and boards got forgiveness with their landings every 180 half turn, with safer landing transitions (usually) too (no friction and obstacle void).

Didn't they just try slope in the X-Games? didn't work out so hot...
  • 2 0
They had a FMB event one time at the X-Games. How did it not work out? Events are planned and weather is always pending. The fact that X-Games dropped the FMB is good news to me. Means the X-Games are headed on their way to become obsolete... Duh, go figure. They dropped MTB. Olympics won't because they are trying to gain more popularity. This MTB community is small. But still world wide. And biking will always be universally appealing. It will have one of the biggest spot lights sooner or later. MTB is just so RAD.

Logistics alone will keep DH MTB out of the Summer Olympics. It would be the only summer sport that requires a mountain or significant grade to build a course.
  • 1 0
Id think if Dh was to be implemented into the games you would need to have a external venue for the event. Its not ideal but not impossible. I still think it would become like tennis though, its in the games but no one really pays attention to the olympic players its about grandslams and cup titles. I could see the same going for downhill, worldcup victories and worlds will be highly regarded as the pinnacle events. Although i still think it would be a good addition in terms of our sport development on the recognition front and as another stage for young rider development.
