Video: The Road From Karakol

by Tyler Maine

In summer 2011, Outdoor Research athlete Kyle Dempster took off on his bike across Kyrgyzstan with a couple mostly-accurate maps, a trailer full of climbing gear, and a vocabulary of 10 Kyrgyz words. He spent two months pedaling and pushing the bike more than 1200 km on roads of variable states of neglect, wading through wild rivers, dealing with corrupt military checkpoint staff, and soloing a handful of unclimbed alpine rock and mixed routes. He recorded the journey, his camera his only partner, friend, and sometimes the only receiving end of his conversations for days at a time.

In 2013, Kyle’s self-shot footage of his journey in Kyrgyzstan made it to the desk of filmmakers Fitz Cahall and Austin Siadak, who were asked to look at the footage and see if there might be enough to chop together a 4-minute climbing film. They saw a lot more potential in it, and turned it into the 25-minute “The Road From Karakol,” which debuted at the 5Point Film Festival and took home the Best In Fest award.

The film premieres online today, and we hope it will inspire you to start dreaming up your next adventure.

I just finished a 3917 mile solo unsupported tour across the US. Power to this guy (Kyle) amazing job documenting, etc. It is not easy to keep up with photos and video and still make forward progress, even on decent American roads. Traveling solo adds a level of intensity that is hard to explain until you experience it.

Sorry but at 19:14 is specialized hardrock (grip shift) and at 19:25 it is KHS ( XT thumb shifters). So I think this part is fake.

same here especially with two different handlebars and stems!

This is what Outdoor Research said: "We did take the 'Rockhopper' footage while back in Salt Lake City after the trip was over. During editing, it was deemed necessary to help round out the river crossing segment. Hope you can forgive us, but do know the rest of the footage was from Kyle's trip."

Ok so there is crucial scene where main hero say goodbye to everybody and half of this footage is fake, is this ok ?

The only thing they filmed in Utah was the shots of his face while he was "crossing the river, otherwise it would have just been him before the crossing, and then after. Like they said it was for continuities sake.

it's a cool video, i just have one question that needs an answer, does he have an extra handlebar in his bag, coz in the video i see a black stem and black flat handlebar with horns and bag, and i see another white stem and handlebar, i just can't see the point!

Interesting to see him scared to cross a waist high river (which when it is that fast flowing is dangerous, don't misunderstand me), but not climbing vertical ice faces...

The fear of something you can't control (the river) vs something you can try to control (climbing). He's pretty confident of his climbing ability.

You are right. It is all what you are confident in. From my perspective it is very hard to control ice that may shift, crack or break off at any moment. Especially when you are hundreds of feet up a face.

Saw this first hand at the 5 Point Film Festival when it premiered. Met Kyle, totally awesome guy. Badass dude, badass film. Mad respect for him and Duct Tape Then Bear for putting the piece together.

Done 4 trips now the last was 13000Km, swore i would not do another (because i miss my mountain biking) but when i watch this it makes me wonna drop everything and ride into nothingness. A lot of powerful emotions watching and experiencing that shit.
Great video Kyle

Outstanding! Such a brave guy for sure. And also want to say I'd rather struggle with the river than such a crazy climbing with all his stuff. Once again, great document and that guy.

I knew when I saw the small pic of a guy walking his bike through shin deep water that this was going to be sweet. Big respect for this man.
