Yesterday was the 14th annual Bear Mountain Challenge in Mission, BC and over 300 DH racers converged on the course to see if anyone could best Stevie Smith's course record set a few years back. While no one bested Stevie, there was still a ton of fast racing that went down.
^^ private road with nowhere for two vehicles to pass means authorized shuttles only. Many people I spoke with were there at 8am saturday and easily got in 4 runs before noon. Don't blame the organizers cause of a situation they can't control.
Um, last time I did the numbers we all paid the organizers 65$x295(racers)=19,175.00$ before all the 1.50 bottles of water... Maybe they could rent an excavator for a whole 300.00 per day and spend 2 days building a pull out half way up the road to allow for a 3 rd shuttle? Or maybe they could haul more than 25-30 riders per shuttle? There were easily 75-100 riders in line several times... you do the math. Situation they can't controle? The article said this race has been going for 14 years? Seems to me we all paid them to control it.
If you are throwing numbers around to do the math let's complete the equation, if you can. How much is sanctioning costs, insurance, porta-potties, timing, cash awards, shuttle bus drivers and bus rental, cube vans, trailer builds, trail maintenance costs for tools, PA system, MC, is there land costs to use the tree farm in Mission, how many racers are going to show so they can budget the expenses and I could probably keep going. I have an idea, put on a shuttle access race and see if you can one up them. The best thing any of us can do, instead of bitching on the internet, is organize our own race of the same level and raise the bar. Go for it, I will show up for sure, maybe, if its not raining and I can find a ride there.
the organisers were limited by the shuttle route, could have paired 2x cube vans/truck trailers and bus's but it would have been damn tight at the top and probably slowed things down.
I was happy out with the runs I Got in 5 on saturday and 3 sunday without pushing it too hard. sure there are better uplifts at other venues but you have to take it as a case by case basis. the next 2 BC cups are lift access anyway so game on there.
as always you can nit pick and pick holes in the organisers job but everything ran on time, most people got enough runs in to be happy the track was so much fun in practice (bit more fittness on my part would have been nice for the race) well worth the money spent.
It was a super fun course and great video!! To bad the shuttle lines were a minimum of 1hr+ and the average number of runs for the whole week-end was like 4 plus the race run... It wasn't just us either, I was in line with pros who only got 4 practice runs in an 8 hr riding day on sat. Shit, I met a guy who stood in line for over an hour on Sunday(race day) only to be told that he wouldn't even get a warm-up run before his race... I was there at 8:30 on Sunday, did 1 warm-up, stood in line for 45 minutes and then was told to go and wait almost 2 hrs for my race run because I wouldn't even make the last shuttle... So me and the 3 other guys I was with got 5 runs for a 65 dollar entrance fee thats about 13.00 per run. It didn't help that they had the shuttle route closed to private vehicles or we all could have easily bagged 7-10 runs per day. The last race wasn't much better. A lot of people were choked. Again, fun course, but very Poorly organized transportation in my opinion...
Did you look at the road? Its a one lane gated logging road for both those courses. If you have suggestions for the organisers you should contact them. Shuttles have been a problem for both Arduum (4 years) and Bear (14 years). Given the situation of the road, I think they did a great job. I was there for the first shuttle on Saturday and left at 2:00 and bagged 5 shuttles and I hiked up once. I was on the first shuttle on Sunday and got two runs in and then my race run. I thought that was pretty good. At Arduum, I got even more.
Ya I got a couple more at Arduum as well. I dunno, I just didn't find it that well organized for that particular part of it(transportation). Easy fix might be a 3rd round of shuttles? People would be less likely to complain waiting behind 15 people at the top than behind 125 people at the bottom... Some guys got more and great for them... Even you stated you only got 8 runs in all week-end?? I pulled in just as the first shuttle was leaving on sunday, so that means you were prob one of the lucky few who actually got 2 that day... We hiked our last run of saturday as well cuz we got fed up with waiting in line. I think I might consider camping at the race venue next time to save some travel time but that also means I won't shower for 48hrs... YUK.
thanks for the positive comments as anyone who has put on a race can attest to how much work goes into it......... by alot of people. Too bad CJL1 really has no idea of the costs and liabilities of putting on any type of event. Just to throw this out there that all of the race organizers except for one DO NOT even race downhill. They put the event on for the love of the sport....period. None get paid and even use their own vehicles to tow there own trailers up that we modify so no bikes get damaged like they so often do with shuttling. No we can not compete with chair assist mountains, but this type of race offers so much to the racers, families that come watch and cheer, the local economy and, the BMX group that did the concession to raise money for their track for yet again more riders to use. So don't complain about the cost of a bottle of water when you can bring your own if that breaks you...do it for the kids. Oh yeah, cycling BC requires that we only provide you with a minimum of 2 pre-runs, so we actually doubled your pleasure 8^)
-how do you suggest we get more people on a shuttle (did you see length of truck and trailer)?? no bikes damaged though -where can i rent a bulldozer for $300 a day?? -yeah, race on for 14 years and we still do not OWN the hill or the road we use -come anytime and ride the hill for free and hike up in 40 min -open to any constructive ideas- but no bullshit complaining -people who step to the plate are usually lending a helping hand and not just making it sound like we have not tried to be better each year. you try to run a BC Cup XC and DH race on the same weekend, with volunteers and your own wallet to make it happen and hope you get enough people -if you were not bitching you would not complain about$1.50 water and making up your own math to make it seem like we walked away with thousands $$. I made not 1 cent, but had fun. Donated money back to FVMBA. Are you member.........? -thanks again to all who helped out and all the racers and fans that showed up
WOW, I seriously connot beleive what I am hearing... I also work in a very customer oriented feild where a largeportion of my business comes from word of mouth referrals... You know what the first sentence out of my mouth when one of clients has a legitimate complaint? "THANK YOU FOR BRINING THAT TO MY ATTENTION". Because if one person feels this it's highly likely others do as well. You worry about attendance at your races? Do you think anyone would recommend to any of their freinds to drive 5.5 hours and spend 400 bucks for the week end to stand in line for hours and maybe get to spend a whole 30 minutes on their bike for all that effort? The funny thing is you actually made my point for me when you stated that it takes 40 minutes to walk up the hill. Thats exactly what we did for our final practice run on Sat because we(all 4 of us) were completely fed up with waiting in line for over an hour each run. And there you have it; it was litterally faster to walk your bike up the bloody hill than wait in line for a shuttle...!!!
you answered my response.................a legitimate complaint.I drive 10 hrs to a race and do a few runs and 1 race run because I choose to do a race series. If you want 20 runs in a day, come a week early when no one is around this race or any other. If that is the only way you look at it you shouldn't race. Look at other races that don't rely on ski hills to do all their work. Fluid ride(Port Angeles)and many others around the globe. Same issues when no chairlift is being used. Spoiled is the only word that comes to mind. If you go back to your original rants you hear nothing but complaining. Nothing legitimate about any of your wants and complaints. Definitely no answers for your own questions. You are welcome to be on the committee for next year as it was the biggest race around..............again. Doing something right with our limited resources. cheers
Ok, I know there are costs involved. That most people there were volunteers. That there is some thought that goes into these evnets and that nobody is perfect... However, I was a paying CUSTOMER at this event and as such I am entitled to my opinion. My OPINION is that a little more thought and effort could have gone into the transportation part of the event. THATS ALL. I am not "bitching" about this, I am describing the issue I observed and recommending solutions... I had fun at this event and it was well put together overall as I stated in my original comment. I just didn't like standing in line for over an hour for a 4 minute run. Jeesis if nobody ever steps up to the plate and says that it could use some improvement, then how the hell is it gonna get any better?
The course does not offer a lot of vertical, so there a lot of sections where the riders simply are not flying, but are going as fast as one can on the course.
Maybe it was just me, but did the course look mini dh-ish and almost a little tame? I'm sure someone coulda come on with a mini dh and be right up there.. just a personal observation.
so much even tho i had a crap run it was so fun and chilled one of my fav races good work all u people that make it happen !! looking forward to next year
