JORDIE LUNN
Been there, done that.Who was the fastest Canadian at Mt. St. Anne in 2003? Who was the highest ranked North American downhiller in the 2003 UCI World Cup Standings? Who was the first person, in 2006, to land the corked 720 that Brandon Semenuk and co make look so damn easy these days?
Jordie Lunn.
Originally from Parksville, B.C, the longtime racer turned freerider has done it, he’s been there, and he’s been in it. Jordie has competed in World Cup downhill races, Crankworx slopestyle events, the Red Bull Rampage, he’s been the star of films like “The Collective,” “ROAM” (“The snake just went into his snake-hole”), and of course for those that know: “Ride to the Hills.“
After all these years he hasn’t slowed down, and in 2016 you’re most likely to catch Jordie in the air at one of the Fest Series stops, or at home in Victoria managing and coaching at the Bear Mountain Bike Park. (Intro by good friend, Ross Measures.)
Who is Jordie Lunn?A rider.
Where are you from and where do you live? From Parksville, now living in Victoria. Both on Vancouver Island, BC.
Who do you ride for?Myself and all the kids that scream "
do a backflip!".
Where are you happiest? Most places, haha. Lately, it's been out in the woods, building new jumps and lines, eagerly anticipating the first attempts of each section! I'm happy there.

Ian Hylands What’s been your favourite race/contest venue over the years?I guess it's pretty hard to beat Whistler as a venue... though some other places have really stuck with me. Worlds in 2003 at Lugano, definitely one, if not the most gorgeous place I've even been. And I've always loved the events in Norway, Days of Thunder and Hillbilly HuckFest were great events and venues. Also, Norway reminds me of home.
Where are your favourite trails?Coast Gravity Park, Retallack, and home.
Tell us about what you are doing at Bear Mountain on Vancouver Island.Well, in 2014 we worked with Bear Mountain as a new venue for JumpShip, an event that had been held in the inner harbour of Victoria in previous years. Shortly after it was decided that Bear Mountain had such great riding potential, as well as the ability to connect with many surrounding trail systems. This grasped the attention of Canadian Mountain Bike Team coach Dan Proulx and we began to work with him to make Bear Mountain the new home and official training centre for the National and Olympic Cross-country MTB Teams! With combined efforts from The Nature Trail Society and my bike park crew we've now put in a bunch of great single track and "flow" trails and soon we'll be opening our first downhill specific trail! Along with all of this, the bike park crew and I have put in and have been operating the Jump Park up here. With jump lines of berms and table tops, all the way up to big step downs and ramp jumps, an airbag, and a mulch jump. We've pretty much just been going full steam ahead here, and only developing more trail, and bigger, better ideas for the program up here at Bear Mountain!
What are your strengths?Core and Triceps.
What are your weaknesses?Chocolate, Pesto, and Tailwhips.
What’s been your worst crash over the years?Maybe the time I hit Casey Groves' back wheel in the air... Sent me over the bars to my face. Silly mistake of just following a bit too close, but I ended up knocked out for some time, with a separated shoulder and a
shattered wrist with a bone sticking out. But really, I just think that the ever increasing amount of concussions over the years has been the worst thing for me.
What’s been your luckiest escape?Probably the time that I took off of a big step down in the woods of West Van. It was a pretty big gap, with a decent drop, trees on either side of the run-out and not much room for error. I guess I got excited and misjudged the speed. Overshot by about 20 feet, then rag-dolled for another 75 or so without hitting a single tree!
Which bike from over the years, conjures up the best memories?I wouldn't say any one bike relates to my best memories. Sure I've done some memorable things, on some different bikes, but it's always been more about the friends I've made along the way. So many that I've made through the race and freeride events, who I may only see once a year now, but always relate back to the "
remember that time!?" Now the Fest Series events are just creating more and more of those unforgettable times with the best crew at every event. You can't beat it.
What bikes are you riding right now?- Rocky Mountain Maiden
- Rocky Mountain Altitude
- Deity Cryptkeeper
Who’s your favourite rider?DMX.
Who or what inspires you?My brothers. They're both so much better than me but in totally different ways. We grew up riding together and they both had different strengths on the bike that I lacked. Now growing up, I see them use those strengths in the different paths they've taken and succeeded.
What do you enjoy doing away from bikes? Most sports, hockey, snow, skate and attempting to surf and golf. Playing some softball this year too, hahaha. I still try to drum a bit as well. And I guess I've got pretty into some fitness stuff over the past few years too. Then combine any of the above with a camping or road trip... even better!
What are you listening to right now?Bieber, wait, anything but Bieber. Mostly a bunch of iTunes playlists lately, a good mix of rock, hip hop and metal.
What’s your favourite movie/ TV show?- Movie: RAD
- Show: TrailerParkBoys
What’s your favourite non-bike website?eBay.
What’s your favourite motto or saying?Worst case Ontario.
What grinds your gears?Unexpected vehicle maintenance.
What makes you happy?FaceTime's with Lucy (my niece).
If you weren’t a pro mountain biker, what would you be doing?Your guess is as good as mine! Haha, it's always been about bikes for me. I tried university for a few year to have a "
back-up plan", but was gone too much riding to pass anything! Then I spent some winters in the oilfields of Alberta, but basically working so that I could spend the summer riding! Might be a good PB poll, though! Hahaha!
If you were in charge of the sport, what changes would you make?Discontinue Fat Bikes.
When you hang up your riding shoes, how do you want to be remembered? As much as I know that day will never come. I'd like to be remembered as a fun, approachable guy, nothing more.
What does the future hold for Jordie Lunn?Hopefully, the future pulls through and brings me the reverse aging machine that I've been waiting for. If not, we'll see how long I last. More bikes, more fun!

Side note, has anyone tried watching roam back again these days? One of my ultimate fave bike films but really shows the difference in quality of filming...not that I don't love the old films
Also really impressed by his work outs. A great and really dedicated way to keep your body strong so you can keep riding for many more years. Something I'm sadly familiar with, need to take my core training and yoga very seriously to be able to ride my mtb.
Seems like a cool guy, and obviously a super sick rider. One of the legends for sure!
Indestructible \m/
I am old an confused
