Ty Dillon

Every day we bring our readers the latest and greatest from within the mountain bike industry. Today we're expanding that reach to introduce yourselves to Ty Dillon, a NASCAR driver, who loves mountain biking. Ty discovered mountain biking as a way to stay out of the gym and really explore the woods and trails in different towns as he tours around the country and needs to stay in shape and have sharp reactions for race day. Just like the rest of us, Ty has found our sport and loves it, too.

Got a cool late birthday gift from @generalmills I'm on a @wheatiescereal box such a cool present.

Who is Ty Dillon?

I am a professional stock car driver for Richard Childress Racing, an avid outdoorsman, mountain biker, sports fanatic, and family man.

Where are you from and where do you live?

I am from and currently still live in Welcome, NC with my wife, Haley.

You're a driver in Nascar, tell us who your race for?

I race for Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. RCR is my family’s business founded by my grandfather, Richard Childress. My racing is supported by Bass Pro Shops, WESCO, Rheem, VF Imagewear, General Mills, and Pfizer (Nexium).

We hear that you are big into mountain biking, tell us about that.

I do love mountain biking – it’s a great way for me to feed my passion for the outdoors, stay in shape for racing and also build friendships. I have had some of the best times on a mountain bike and have seen a lot of God’s creations. Mountain biking is one of my favorite activities.

Doin some riding in Sedona the trail names are never comforting!

Where are you happiest?

Probably when I’m with my family. I have some of the best times with my wife, brother, parents and grandparents.

What’s been your favourite race/contest venue over the years?

You know, I don’t have a favorite race track, but I do like tracks that are unique – Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a great place because of its history and uniqueness. That may be the closest track to my favorite.

I also love the Daytona 500, I’ve had an opportunity to race it in the past 2 years. It’s the pinnacle of motorsports.

Where are your favourite trails?

We do a lot of riding here in North Carolina, and the trails are beautiful. But I’d have to say the trails in Sedona, Arizona are my favorite. It’s very pretty out there and always a challenging ride.

Tell us about what got you into mountain biking?

I was looking for different ways to train for the NASCAR season – I really do not like the weight room and doing a “traditional” workout, though it’s important for what we do as drivers. A big part of driving is being in shape and doing a lot of cardio workouts and being able to push through temporary pain. Mountain biking is the perfect crossroad of that. Some guys at the race shop were already avid riders at the Charlotte Whitewater center, Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, NC, and a few others. It was easy for me to just tag along and try it one day. I was hooked. Now, I try to ride at least once-twice a week or when we travel. It’s a perfect workout for me and I would encourage all NASCAR drivers to do it.

What are your strengths?

Being a good teammate, friend and family member.

What’s been your worst crash over the years - in the car and on the bike?

You know, I have had a few, but I’ve always been able to get up and get back on the bike. Same goes for the race car.

Which bike from over the years, conjures up the best memories?

Ha. I’m not sure. Maybe my first ever Huffy bike that I learned to ride without training wheels when I was like 4.

What bikes are you riding right now?

I have got two right now, an Intense Tracer T275 and a Scott Spark 900 premium.

#throwbackthursday to my first career #DAYTONA500 start last year. Glad to have my family there to cheer me on! @haleykdillon @cheerios #nascar #tbt #daytona

Who or what inspires you?

Winning inspires me. In the race car, and in everything else I do in life.

What do you enjoy doing away from bikes and cars?

I play a lot of fantasy sports, (baseball, football) spend time with my wife Haley, hang out with friends and family.

What are you listening to right now?

Man, I listen to literally everything. From Jay-Z to Justin Timberlake to country music, rap music, you name it. My phone is crazy diverse with songs.

What’s your favourite movie/ TV show?

Last man on earth, Friends, and Breaking Bad.

What’s your favourite non-bike or car website?

Probably any fantasy sports website – Yahoo fantasy, FanDuel or DraftKings.

What’s your favourite motto or saying?

Ask questions later.

What makes you happy?

Hard work paying off. Seeing my team succeed. My wife.

If you weren’t a pro race car driver, what would you be doing?

You know, I’m not sure. Probably working in some sort of racing at a different level. I do love sports and would love to work in a front office of a baseball or football team.

If you were in charge of the sport of mountain biking, what changes would you make?

Get the word out about how great it is! We need more people to ride!

When you hang up your driving shoes, how do you want to be remembered?

I want to be a legend of our sport. But more importantly, someone that gave it his all every single race. I also want to be known as a good teammate and someone that is good to work with. I learned to work hard at a young age, mainly from my grandfather. So probably someone that works hard.

What does the future hold for Ty Dillon?

Continue to race and give it my all every weekend.

Best of luck on the oval and the singletrack Ty. Check out Ty Dillon's Instagram to follow his adventures both on and off the track.

He has a better chance winning an xc race than the Daytona 500. I guess making millions to finish 20th all the time is better than free bike parts.

Ted ligety (don't know if I spelled correctly) us dh skiing gold medalist also rides mountain bikes. Would be cool to hear his thoughts

I want to see an interview with Tim Commerford, the bassist from Rage Against Machine. That dude has been shredding trails forever and thanks his mountain bikes in the fine print of the albums. Please!!!!

A few years back, Sedona on an Autumn mid-week morning(Ah Sedona), caught up to a guy taking a view break, 'George', seemed like a local, super cool demeanor, dialed bike and all. We trailed each other for the next hour, good skills being exhibited where we split trails at another view break( Ah Sedona!). Exchanging handshakes, I said my full name for some reason, with a "damn glad to ride with ya' George" handshake. "George Lynch" he said mellowly. It didn't even hit me until I read an article about George( guitarist- Lynch Mob, Dokken) living in AZ! I knew he "seemed like somebody". At least when I ran into Ricky Carmichael, I knew him right away! I think a "Guess Who Rides MTB" section would be kind of eye opening.

Also, Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters is a hard core rider... He's putting in miles almost any day he isn't on tour.. Super cool guy..
  • 3 2
Yep, that's the one we need. It's cool that a Bible boy what drives a car in circles likes real sports too, but IDGAF.

@lpcunity Brice Minnigh and Anthony Smith did that in Bike Magazine about a year ago. It was really well done, Look up Renegades of Fun.

Overly-polished interview typical of big-money sports. Makes me appreciate pro MTB interviews even more!
  • 14 0
I'm genuinely sorry you have to compete with Ricky Bobby
  • 11 1
I absolutely respect the difficulty of driving a car on the edge for 500 laps, but damn you can not call NASCAR the pinnacle of motorsports
  • 16 9
"Man, I listen to literally everything. Jay-Z to Justin Timberlake to country music, rap music, you name it. My phone is crazy diverse with songs"... Listens to literally everything? That's about as diverse as the turns at a NASCAR track. I was expecting him to say "14hr long fart soundtracks, cats singing christmas carols, NSA recordings of drugged convalescents humming Vivaldi, all the way to GG Allin and Tiny Tim"
  • 10 13
Expected him to list every band, eh? And road courses man, they're awesome and diverse. If you understand NASCAR, you'll know the diversity overall is not in the direction of the turns.
  • 9 0
Dude if he said GG and TT, he would've had a fan for life.
  • 4 4
@scott-townes: I was just poking fun. You can't expect much out of someone who uses the term "literally" incorrectly. "Diversity in NASCAR" is laughable, unless you are talking corporate sponsorship. They have the most diverse insurance, hot dog, lite beer and corn product endorsement on the planet! Yeeehaw!!
  • 2 1
Most people who say they listen to a little bit of everything really mean that they just flip through the radio stations
  • 3 2
@nfontanella: 'a little bit of everything' = country + not country
  • 10 1
I think Ty is rad. I don't even follow NSCAR....but he is rad cause he knows riding is rad. That is all that counts.
  • 13 5
Oh my. The Daytona 500 is absolutely not the pinnacle of motorsports.
  • 10 2
Yeah. I would say it's the pinnacle behind

This guy never had a chance with these shite questions. Get Vernon's lazy old ass out of the coffee shop and into proper gonzo journalism mode stinkbike editors.
  • 1 0
He would ask him " yeah, but how does it ride?"
  • 3 0
There's some good interviews with MLB pitcher Daniel Norris who lives in a van in the off season. He grew up with his family owning a mountain bike shop in TN. And driving down to Spring Training in FL, he would live out of his van, and surf down the East Coast. Would love to see an interview from a mountain biking perspective, seems like a super rad dude.
  • 4 1
Despite the fact that this guy races NASCAR and happens to ride, this article really didn't offer anything interesting. I think asking an average rider the same questions would have been more interesting. I understand that society appreciates celebrity - but this interview missed the mark for me.

Jimmie Johnson is a great mtb rider. Good to see other NASCAR folk riding as well.

I remember Matt Kenseth talking about racing his Scalpel in XC
  • 3 2
Very cool. maybe interview Drivers/riders from other series as well? This could be a really interesting series, a look at our sport through other athletes eyes. Indy, Rally (Travis Pastrana's Crankworx Air DH backflip fail ring any bells? Lol), moto X, Moto GP, etc. On another note, It is also how I stay out of the gym! Well, no, I just stay out of the gym...
  • 1 1
I think the purpose of the interview is to get more Mtn. Bikers to watch nascar.
I hate nascar but just saw a commercial and wondered if that Ty guy would be there?
Still hate nascar; regardless his job is way better than mine,
