Urge Cabo Verde - Vouilloz and Moseley win it!

Urge Cabo Verde concludes after 4 separate runs through out the past week and sees Vouilloz and Moseley on top of the stacked field.Arrival:


Seeing where the support will go:

Tuesday the 8th of February: The team went to the Pedro Gomez School and the riders were able to meet two of the four associations that Urge Cabo Verde will support. They were able to exchange with the children and to get a accurate vision of the way the funds will be used on the Santiago Island.


Few hours of a rich human interaction, finished by a meal all together… a nice way to celebrate in the middle of the kids the 35th birthday of Nicolas Vouilloz!

Then direction the port to wait under the sun for the boat that will bring riders and bikes on the Fogo Island.

Few words from Sam Péridy:

“3 hours on an agitated sea… seems a bit of vomit… this is it, the third chapter of Urge Event has started!”

It’s indeed by coasting the Fogo Island that the sporting side takes off. As soon as they landed on the volcano, the riders will climb until the middle of the caldeira to spend the night there…

Program for Wednesday: training in the lava of the volcano, then night (very short one…) in the crater.


Program for Thursday: early start to climb with the bike on the back the slopes towards the peak of the volcano, then a bit of rest before the first run out of four! Goal: to go down in the lava until reaching the sea and all of that without a pre-ride…


Last news: Hans Rey should get his lost bike only when the team will arrive on the Santo Antao Island. He’s probably going to ride Fred Glo’s bike on Thursday for the first run.

Tonight the riders will spend evening with Cesaria Evora, the Godmother of the Urge FOR Cabo Verde program and tomorrow, boat to Santo-Antao for run 2 in the afternoon and runs 3 & 4 on sunday...

Thursday the 10th of February: riders, photographers, cameraman and staff rolled up their sleeves for the three and a half hours climb to reach the base camp on the peak of the Fogo volcano, few 1000m higher.


Chris Gallo, also known as Poulet, keeps building his legend by arriving first on the top and wining the “Pep’s Trophy”!

From the top, the view on the archipelago is fantastic, the sun is right on time, everybody is tired, but ready to go. Only down side, Fred Glo, while walking the track, realized that the run is a lot worse since the last pre ride check…

Riders are then warned to stay alert regarding their security in the first place, they’ll ride without checking first and rescue could be tricky to organize in case of troubles…


Around midday, the Urge’s Run 1 started and, we’re sure of it, will be kept in everyone’s memory for a long time. Start in the lava and gravels on an extremely steep terrain, crossing through a village on a track section, then diving on a single track in the jungle to reach the sea… and the finish line.

Punctures, falls, every kind of surprises, but every rider finished in one piece, exhausted, but delighted! The most serious fall was Sabrina Jonnier’s who stroked a rock and went OTB! Scarier than painful, she finished with a big bruise, but got her good mood back immediately. René Wildhaber who was following naturally stopped to help her and the organization decided to give him a time bonus of 1 minute for this nice gesture. The riders are more than ever there to protect themselves and help each other in these isolated spots.


This first run was won by Jey Clémentz for the male and Tracey Moseley for the female.

The day ended with a meeting between the female riders and the Cape Verde women that Urge FOR Cabo Verde will support with their charity actions on the Fogo Island.

Friday the 11th of February: Liaison day when the riders will be able to recover a bit with a boat trip and 2 transfers in a row with the TACV planes.

Goal: To arrive at the end of the afternoon in the town of Mindelo on the Sao Vicente island where they’ll meet tonight the immense Cesaria Evora, “godmother” of the Urge FOR Cabo Verde programs. A night full of emotions in prospect…

Mindelo will be the departing port of a cargo that’ll take the team to the Santo Antao Island where the last three runs of this Urge Cabo Verde will take place on Saturday and Sunday…

A good luck / bad luck day…

Friday the 11th of February: so the team board on a boat around 8.30am to reach the Santiago Island. Nice weather, quiet sea, everyone make the most of it to recover from Thursday run.

> good luck: when arrived at Praia, Hans Rey got at last his GT back that arrived from the US!


The riders then board two small planes which will take them to Mindelo, on the Sao Vicente Island, by going through the Sal Island.

During this time, the bikes finally all there will have to be boarded in a special plane that will leave them at Mindelo airport. There, the riders will be able to get them back and to have them for the cargo that will take them to the Santa Antao Island on Saturday morning…

.> bad luck: when arrived at Mindelo, the team got news that the cargo plane couldn’t take off… So the bikes are stuck on an another isle and riders… on foot!

A B plan needs to be found…

> good luck: in spite of these setbacks, there’s still time to join at her home the singer Cesaria Evora, “godmother” of the Urge FOR Cabo Verde program. The riders are very warmly welcomed and the meeting is a really rich exchange. Anka Martin and René Wildhaber, both big fans of the famous Cape Verde voice, are delighted.

> bad luck: during this time, the organization can’t find a satisfaying solution to get the bikes back on time. Too much delay would compromise the already really tight schedule of the week-end.

> good luck: during the night, some of the bikes could be taken in a another flight…


> bad luck: only 5 out of 15 arrived…

> good luck: another plane can board the remaining 10 bikes on Saturday morning…

Summary of the day: the 3 runs scheduled this week-end will be difficult to do if the time lost on Saturday is too much. The organization will take a decision Saturday, depending on how things work,, even if it means to cancel a run…

Saturday the 12th of February: the riders will board towards Santa Antao with the 5 bikes already there, while the Pep’s team stays in Mindelo to wait for the other 10 bikes…

As soon as they’re unloaded out of the plane, the bikes will be loaded in a pickup truck and driven full speed ahead to the port to meet the team on a fishing boat that the people of Mindelo made available to us…


At 10am the chances to be able to run the afternoon run at Cova de Paul are estimated at 5%.

Around midday, the horizon got a little bit brighter, chances to follow the program are up to 40%...
