Video & Photo Story: Jeff Kendall-Weed Explores Montana's Wild Places With MTB Missoula
The land trust asked us to place the trail in the areas of highest previous impact. This particular section was an old ski run that had literally been bulldozed 5 or 10 feet down to flatten it out. All the good dirt was shoved out to the edges of the run. The remaining "dirt" is probably 60/40 shale/dirt. We imported some clay from another deposit that the trail crossed, but you can only get so much without tearing the whole mountain up, as the shale is only a foot or two down below the mineral soil. The rocks come out over time, we rake them, and it's fine. The berms are laid out such that you don't have to hit the brakes, so it holds up. Fortunately our dirt has just enough clay to be somewhat tough, as long as the work is done when it's fully saturated and you don't mess with it when it's dry.

4 Ultra Small Scale Manufacturers Making Exciting Stuff in 2021
Fair point, but the other Brian's got it right 1. I'm definitely not saying this will work for every last person, but you have to start somewhere and manufacturing is hard. 2. Sitting on a bike is different than sitting in a chair, and my take is there's less variation in the width of the pubic rami than there is in the ischial tuberosities, and on a bike you're usually bearing the weight somewhere in between the two. From direct experience with the people riding them, the design has been shown to work for a pretty wide range of body types. Cheers!

Behind the Numbers: Specialized Stumpjumper EVO 29 Suspension Analysis
@WasatchEnduro: agreed, the Topaz really helped out my Enduro. The firm compression position doesn't fully calm the bike, as that shock doesn't have a preloaded shim stack, but it does enough. But the smoothness of the air spring and the rebound tune seem to match the frame really well; much easier to tune than the stock Monarch rc3, even with the debonair can added. I usually run the Topaz in the middle compression position while descending, probably due to the high and linear leverage ratio, but our trails are also faster and smoother.

4 New Materials That Could Improve Carbon Fiber
not exactly a composites engineer, but i think the fundamental problem is that most of the materials that can add toughness to a laminate are not as stiff as carbon fiber, so within the laminate they can't really bear any load under normal conditions. I'm pretty sure this is why the 90's trend of putting a bit of kevlar in everything fell away. By the time the kevlar sees any load, the carbon fiber has already broken, so why bother? By the time you've added enough secondary material to the laminate to actually hold it together in a fracture, the weight goes up considerably. Maybe something like the kalloy aluminum foil can be optimized eventually, but i'm not holding my breath. Likely better to just add more carbon and keep it from breaking in the first place.
