Sun Peaks
Welcome to what I think is Canada's First Ever Private Bike Park Enduro. Sun Peaks Resort is home of the final round of the OSPREY Canadian National Enduro Championship (CNEC), presented by NOBL Wheels on Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18, 2016. And we're about to smash those times, on small bikes, riding four times as much terrain. Let's Give'r!

INJURED RIDER
Mike Acton a Volunteer Medic for the BC Enduro Series, Trans BC is an all around supporter of our community. Unfortunately, at the last race he sustained a serious head injury and is unable to work for the next 3-4 months, he has just had a little girl and believe it or not, works as a nurse caring for others, likely riders too! I started up a go-fund-me for Mike, because he's too humble to ask others to not spend money on their bike, so if you have a few spare coins, please help get Mike the best doctors and a fast recovery! Donate Here

CAMPING
Parking Lot P4 (Near Kookaburra Lodge) (access to showers, room for RVs, established sites and washrooms) = $20
Overflow Camping (Dirtbag Package)
P2 (no services, but it is flat and level!) - $10

I almost didn't read this article but I'm so glad I did. Mike is absolutely the friendliest most sacrificing Canadian. When I got injured during TransBC he went above and beyond while helping me get to and from the hospital multiple times, running to the pharmacy in Trail to try to track down some meds for me, remembering my antibiotics I left in Megan's truck, administering my antibiotics via IV so i wouldn't lose my arm, gathering a group together to go visit Glen our media guy who broke his leg, and above all he never stopped being a completely awesome dude. Mike, heal up fast we need you back on the trails! -Your friend, Jeff.

Can someone explain to me.....is there any pedalling? Or they just taking the chair up each time? Those are some pretty challenging trails on a DH bike....should be interesting on an enduro.
  • 2 0
Pedal from the village, to Top of the World once, then chairlifts from there
  • 3 0
yes stage one is a pedal from the bottom all the way up into the alpine!
  • 1 0
Looks like a really fun course even though I dont really understand the lack of pedaling between stages but whatever, I didn't plan the race. Reminds me of La Thuile EWS where chairlifts were used mostly to access the stages. I just wish I could be there this weekend. Good luck everyone. Braaaaaaaaaap

I've said it before and I'll say it again: bike park enduro races, especially ones with so little pedalling make no sense. It's just deliberately using the wrong tool for the job, which is dangerous for riders, destroys gear for no reason and adds expense to an already expensive race weekend.

Races like this alienate the riders who want to get into the sport in favour of those who are willing and able to throw cash at lift tickets, days off work to practice while the park is open, parts and realistically a second no-fun, vaguely pedalable, beefed out enduro bike to handle the abuse.

I've raced some BC Enduros and had a great time - Megan and Ted do an incredible job, but I've also raced some trails that I honestly didn't enjoy at all, broken parts and eaten shit trying to go fast on trails I've barely seen before in the name of 'gnar'. Maybe it's just me but if I wanted to race blown out, high speed bike park or through piles of sharp loose rocks (I'm looking at you: Musser's Plateau in Kimberley) I'd still be racing DH.

End rant. Obviously people love it so maybe I'm in the minority here. Maybe I'm just not very good. Just my 2 cents, even though nobody asked.

Those are solid points for sure. I also don't enjoy racing the gnar on these little bikes. I don't mind riding it, but racing it (most often blind) is a different issue. It is taking the fun out of it for me. Others are stoked though and I'm happy for them. Ted and Megan do put on a great event.

I am the opposite in my thinking in that bike parks are the only place to race. Racing on trails managed by volunteers leaves locals with blown out trails. Sure the organizer gives a donation but the amount doesn't even come close to the cost of doing the repairs.

@d-man: You make a good point, and in my mind, it raises a lot of questions about the sustainability of enduro racing.
  • 2 0
You are totally right on. This sport, the successor to the Super D, was to provide a venue for riders to race their AM or trail bikes they use every day. Bikes that are meant to pedal up, down, and all around. A bike that is still fun to climb on (not at xc race speeds), and capable enough to let go on the descents.

I'll keep my DH rig for DH riding. Lift assisting to race my AM bike kind of defeats the purpose.

Tinfoil , the beauty is, if it's too much for you, you don't have to race it. It's like signing up for a 24 hour endurance race and then complaining it's too long. Not every race is for every person. There's a large group of people that want to test themselves on super tough trails. It annoys me when people complain about a race series that is the first of its kind in bc, that is incredibly run, is still super raw, and is a hell of a lot of fun. If you don't like it, create your own race and cater to those that just want to have fun. Or better yet just go ride your bike and accept your racing days are over. Peace!

I certainly didn't mean to offend you, and nowhere did I say that the races weren't well run (they are). I didn't even say they're not fun. What I said was that enduros held in bike parks are basically $100+ toonie races on pointlessly light bikes. I appreciate everything that Megan and Ted have done to create what is undeniably an incredible race series, but this particular style of course I personally don't enjoy, and in my opinion, it's not great for the sport. I don't know if you're a skier, but it reminds me of ski touring in the resort. Just doesn't seem as enjoyable as it could be. Like I said, it's only my opinion. Take it or leave it.
