Boldly Unscripted in Kamloops Boldly unscripted couldn't be a more appropriate tagline for the
Kamloops stop this past weekend at Harper Mountain. Rider opinions were unanimous, this truly was a 'perfect course'!
This event is a fan favourite, what could be better than naked grass slalom, fifteen-minute stages, lakes, cold beer and some very fast singletrack—all this and at round four four of the
MEC BC Enduro Series (BCES), presented by
Intense Cycles.
Trail Club and Community I'm super lucky to live in Kamloops;
Kamloops is one of the few communities in BC where mountain biking was born; the trails grew organically, the riders created a style that you only get from living here, and if you look at any magazine/podium/video/other mountain paraphernalia, you'll undoubtedly see Kamloops' influence oozing from every corner. My favourite part of Kamloops is the humbleness of the community, we won't tell you how great we are, we'd prefer to just take you on a ride and let you decide.
This is highlighted by the humility of riders in Kamloops—you won't know their names, they don't have an Instagram following, yet, the fact remains that everyone in the community of riders here is an absolute shredder; I've never been to anywhere in the world where everyone you ride with is simply a treat to follow—if you can keep up.
The trails at Harper Mountain are a local gem, the area is maintained by the Kamloops Performance Cycling Centre, the weekend before the event saw a massive trail day, with over 20 volunteers coming out to prep berms, fix drainage issues, and take care of fallen trees.
I want to give special thanks to Cheryl from the Bicycle Cafe. She's always pitching in to help me out with this event, from calling in the heavy hitter volunteers (Jay B. drove from Canmore, Devin K. came from Revelstoke) to staying at the lodge until the late hours to clean up, she does it all! Also thanks to the Bicycle Cafe Crew:
• Jordan Proctor, Chainsaw and berm Wizard
• Olly, course marking machine 8+hrs!
• Lachlan/Dylan/Tyler—Grass Slalom Engineers
I also owe a couple of other big mentions:
The Helly Family, show so much kindness to the series:
• Sue is the jack-of-all-trades: registration, timing, garbage control, podium awards.
• Jeremy and Johnny. Somehow they managed to skip school and course mark with me for eight hours.
• Frank, always keen to course mark, or lend me his dirtbike to "course mark"
These guys really make these events special and I likely wouldn't be able to sleep without their help
Joel Moore—thanks for manning the road crossing on Saturday.
Kamloops Bike Riders Association—Thanks so much for helping me get volunteers and for being a great community stewardship group.
Spoke Bike and Ski—Paul, Carolyn, Greg, Mike and the shop crew have supported me chasing my dreams for years, and I'm super thankful for your confidence, honesty and for always keeping me humble on the climbs.
Local Supporter's—Thanks In addition, I couldn't do this event without the support and help from:
