Canfield Brothers 2016 Balance

Canfield Brothers 2016 Balance

Striking a balance between efficient pedaling and all-out descending—an elusive feat claimed by many, realized by few. The all-new Canfield Brothers Balance is slacker, lower, faster and stronger, yet thanks to the patented Canfield Balance Formula suspension, it is an incredibly efficient pedaler capable of earning its turns.

Canfield Brothers 2016 Balance

Based on the efficient all-rounder that the ‘Bros rolled out in 2014, but calling on the hucking heritage of the original pedalable freeride rig that debuted a decade ago, the 2016 Canfield Brothers Balance was re-engineered with longer travel (165 millimeters/6.5 inches) and a lower leverage ratio for more consistent, smooth travel under hard riding, and a more progressive end stroke to swallow big hits. An all-new CNCed upper link increases stiffness, while a redesigned rear triangle improves tire clearance, and the frame is now crafted from bombproof 7005-series aluminum.

Features:
• 27.5” Aggressive All Mountain
• 7005 aluminum with an all new, stiff CNC’d upper link
• Patented Canfield Balance Formula Suspension
• 165mm travel
• 216mm x 63mm Cane Creek Double Barrel Air CS included
• 142 x 12mm rear dropouts, axle included
• Tapered headtube
• 15mm and 20mm pivot bearings
• Replaceable rear derailleur hanger, spare hanger included
• Anodized and factory raw frame options
• Available in Small, Medium, Large and X-Large
• $2099 USD, Frame and Cane Creek DB Air CS. Component packages available.

Combining the active CBF suspension with the rolling advantages of 27.5-inch (650b) wheels results in a fast, responsive ride, while handling is kept playful and confident with a slack 65-degree head-angle and even shorter 16.5-inch (420-millimeter) chainstays.

Long before the “E” word, The Bros. had their own idea of what an all-mountain bike should be—just as capable of flagrant disregard for line choice and taking big hits in stride as it is of getting you to the top under your own power. The 2016 Balance is perhaps the purest form of that yet—an unflinching aggressive all-mountain machine that’s just as at home in the bike park as it is earning it on a backcountry epic or blazing first descents.

Is it me or do the Bros constantly make awesome bikes?
  • 26 2
It's not you, it's them. I got to ride this very bike last weekend at Bootleg and they do not lie. It pedals like a mountain goat and was more than capable down the front side gnar! Such a fun bike! As with all the other frames they've made that I've ridden, it immediately made me feel like a better rider, like the bike has way more capabilities that I do as a rider, which it certainly does! Bravo Canfield Bros!

Did the bike have that MRP fork on it? Maybe it's just the graphic refresh, but it looks good. I wonder how it compares to RS and Fox
  • 12 7
They almost rune the bike. Almost I mean.
  • 9 0
@chyu, do you mean the Banshee Rune with KS suspension that came out YEARS after Canfield had been building frames based on this type of linkage?
  • 1 2
@whydomylegshurt The raw color kinda looks like it though. But yeah, the version 1 wasn't using the KS Link. I think.
  • 2 1
Banshee is running off of Canfield lets be real Smile @chyu

  • 37 0
well I have 1 bike and zero money, so..... idk
  • 13 2
It has short chain stay, I must have it.

Canfield suspension is the best I have ever had. I have rode FSR-specialised, mastro-Giant, ABP-Trek, faux bar-Kona, VPP of Intense and Santa Cruz...over bumps the Canfield suspension is active and you don't get wheel hop when lighly hitting brakes...Plus the frames last and last. I order mine and get it next month !!

Everything I want in a bike! 12x142 rear end, threaded bottom bracket, available in raw alu, 7005 aluminum, 165mm travel with 8.5x2.5 shock length, great geometry and so much more. I also like the bottom bracket height being 13.5" which is just low enough for me. I have a Nomad3 and pedal strikes happen often, even with shorter crank arms and that gets quite annoying. This will be my next bike. Unfortunately, have to look for additional funds including checking for loose change under the couch cushions.

CB is one of the only companies where I really want every single thing they make. All killer, no filler! Love these guys
  • 13 1
Back to 420 on the chainstays! YESSS!

My favorite demo bike at outerbike, rides awesome with a rear coil:

www.pinkbike.com/photo/12773922

Didn't know it had 16.5in cs at the time but that would explain why it felt so nimble and liked to go in the air.

Also being paired with DVO Suspension makes it even better!
  • 11 2
Damn...I didn't know I could still lust after aluminum!

Wow, what a bike. Everything the customers are asking for in an incredible bike. I feel as though I should slow clap this fine piece.

I was hyping up for a canfield brothers bike and been saving up all year. Now 3 days ago my car broke down, and all the savings will have to go into a new automobile. And now this post comes around to torture me - yet just imagining to ride this bike makes me feel better

What an awesome and perfect mix of all mountain/downhill. These are the type of bikes I am really looking for to buy. Around 160-170mm fork travel, and full suspension with an all mountain/downhill frame. Great job
  • 6 0
Ordered mine! Cant't wait to build it.
  • 2 0
 you lucky son of a...
  • 2 0
So is that the same Al that trek and giant use, whom have really light Al frames?
Any hydroforming done to thin areas where bulk isn't needed? Bikes looks killer-good updates!
  • 2 0
Do they plan on making a shorter travel trail bike, say around 140mm? I really like the look of their bikes but it seems like to much travel for my needs. I like a shorter travel/more playful bike.
  • 1 7
flag blinkpike (Dec 7, 2015 at 22:43) (Below Threshold)
Just put a little more air in the shock and fork to stiffen it up to how a 140mm bike would ride. Done. Enjoy.
  • 3 0
Dare I suggest but there is the Riot ... 140mm travel and similar geo, chainstays are shorter by 6mm and its a 29er.
  • 2 0
@blinkpike with that logic I may as well buy a full on DH rig and just put a firmer spring on the rear. @Zerozerozero I'm not sure if I'm sold on a 29'er either, I'm to picky haha.
  • 1 0
FWIW, as someone who stayed away from bigger wheels for a long time, going to a smaller wheeled (26" currently, but I want to get a 27.5" soon) AM bike & a 29" trail bike is the best setup I've ever had. 29 has it's limitations, especially at longer travels under small riders, but for the majority of people, I really think it's the right bike at/below 140mm.
  • 1 0
I agree that would be the real sweet spot for me. I love my Process 134 but am getting tired of constantly replacing the press fit bottom bracket.
  • 2 0
The Riot (and all their 29'ers) are the only 29'ers I'll ever ride. They are so tucked, it doesn't feel like a wagon at all. If you can, try and demo one and you'll enjoy it!
  • 1 0
Strange I've got a 2014 Process 153dl and never had an issue with the BB
  • 1 0
the more I look at the riot the more it appeals, as far as 29'ers go that does seem like it would be a fairly agile ride.
  • 1 0
65° head angle... Damn! To hear it climbs like a goat that slacked out is impressive. I'd almsot wanna see if it became that more all around if it had a 67° HTA. Could easly be the best weekend warrior race bike/ toy

.... Or I could be wrong, and as it stands, its one of the best weekend warrior race bikes... Lol

Just built up a '15 Balance in 26, now this?

Good move in going to 165.

After having this bike now for a number of months as well as my previous 165 bike with a Monarch RC3, I think they should provide options to the Cane Creek. The RC3 at least has three pedal positions. The locked out mode is more effective than the CC Climb Switch. The middle position is great if you are going up and down a lot and can't be bother with reaching down. The descend position is every single bit as effective as the CC with more ramp up without fiddling a lot with the knobs.

The Balance line of bikes is amazing, but as Super D or Enduro racing rigs, they would be better served with the Monarch RC3 plus.
  • 1 1
I didn't like the cane creek on my Balance either. A lot of messing about with air volume reducers, plus had warranty issues. I never really got it to feel right. I have a Monarch RC3+ on my Banshee right now and feel like it's a way better shock.
  • 4 2
I noticed I got down voted by a hater. Laughable. Don't get me wrong. I believe the CC is a fantastic shock, but I feel it's more gravity oriented, a little more difficult to get tuned, and could use a 3rd pedal platform setting.
  • 3 0
I've got a DVO Jade on mine and it's x10 better! You don't notice it when going up, even in technical spots. And of course is a dream going down. I raced my Balance in most of my DH races over my Jedi!
  • 1 0
The Jade is a damn good shock. I've got one on my nomad and it climbed right up and then without switching a beat drop right back in to the gnarly. Love the Balance as well
  • 1 0
Its everything the 2014 model should have been now they've gotten rid of the design limitations of trying to accommodate a front derailier. I cant really justify £2000 on a frame. I will have to stick to my obsolete model with maybe an angle reducer headset. Ive always felt it was a little too steep.
  • 3 0
That geo is sick.....420 chainstay's, long reach, 65' stock angle!!! Purfect all mountain setup!
  • 1 0
Canfield Bros keep churning out outstanding bikes but they'll pretty much remain under the radar of the masses if the do not pair them with killer videos too. Just my 2 cents...
  • 9 0
... may be I'm wrong, their Riot currently sold out till Feb...
  • 4 1
 Any idea what this weighs?
  • 3 0

Looks awesome, this or the new Delirium or maybe the Uzzi? I'm looking for something more playful at the bike park but something I can also ride up the logging roads.
  • 3 2
Awesome and stunning bike. This just proves you dont have to make a bike out of cloth and glue to make it brilliant. Nice one Canefield.
  • 3 0
They make the best pedals too!
  • 3 0
My wife is going to be mad at me AGAIN...
  • 2 0

  • 2 1
Reading all this with the comparison of the Giant ATX One, Scott Genius and Glory in mind ...
  • 3 0
 Looks sick guys!
  • 1 0
Anyone know what that build will weigh in at? Is it competitive weight wise with the latest carbon dream machines?
  • 2 0
I built up a 2015 Balance with Derby Rims, SixC cranks, Pike, downhill tires, and other burly parts. My build was around 31.5 pounds. I imagine the new frame will weigh around the same so builds should come in around 31-32 pounds. Having owned a Balance and now a carbon machine, my advice is to get the Balance and save your money to get Carbon wheels, etc. In my opinion the price difference hasn't been worth it for me. While the weight is higher the bike rides much, much lighter than the scale shows. Don't let the weight of the bike deter you as weight was quickly a non issue for me. The Canfield suspension is my favorite suspension so far. When climbing the suspension helps maintain your speed over technical sections, and when descending the suspension feels bottomless. My only complaints about the 2015 model was that I wanted the wheelbase to be a little longer, and also ditch the front derailleur, which have been addressed with the new version.
  • 2 0
Ditto. I took the same route with my Banshee Rune, which BTW, is very similar to this bike. Handbuilt carbon wheels (not really lightweight) really help it kick ass even more, but the whole rig comes in 31.5 lbs. The only downside (not really an issue for me) to my Rune is the weight, but a Nomad with top shelf spec(XTR/ENVE) weighs three lbs less and costs $5000 more. I have better things to do with $5000.
  • 1 0
Ditto^2 I imagine the frame weight is about the same as 2015 or they would have mentioned that it was lighter. I love my 2015. I went high end with light and strong parts and mine weighs 32 pounds with DH tires. The weight is a non issue, it rides great and is very durable. I like the changes they made. The front derailer mount and ISCG 03 were my only complaints and they have fixed those. Customer service is great too, no regrets.I would guess the frame weighs around 7.5 pounds.
  • 1 0
Such an a esome looking bike! Reminds me a bit like the Banshee line-up. This bike would be a beast on the descents I bet!
  • 1 0
I am hatting the great deal you are having... make me wonder how to get $1k quick!!
