by Christie Fitzpatrick

Neko Mulally posted an unfortunate injury update to his Instagram this weekend, including a video of a crash whilst training for the Tennessee National. He'll need surgery in the next couple of days, and we're wishing him a speedy recovery.

so gutted for neko, heal up bro! for anyone looking for coverage of the tennessee dh race check out vitalmtb!

This is just... such a bummer. Hate to see anyone get hurt. Especially as we've just started spring. Also especially with Neko's story in particular designing and racing his own frame. Agh. Get well soon, Neko.

Bummer for sure. He has done a lot for cat 2/3 amateur and kids DH racing. Thanks for that and heal up soon.

What are the chances that PB will care a bit more about grassroots racing and slow the focus on MTB influencers and heavily sponsored events. Thanks Vital and Neko for keeping the weekend racer involved in what we can actually afford and attend.

"I'll live to die another day" - that's well put

@RevedOut: Been an avid PB reader for decades now, but Vital will always have a special place in the sport for this reason.

 @phastlikedatnascar: WORD

PB covers mountain biking
Vital is mountain biking

@RevedOut: they've clearly chased the cake. Not sure why I even look at this website anymore. It's just a big commercial.
  • 3 0
@dirtbagluvin: why do you hate cake?!
  • 2 0
@tbmaddux: it makes you bloated, and unwieldy, kinda like PB.

I was so stoked to see Neko on the hot seat throughout the last Crankworks DH, then ending up on the podium less than a second back from Loic Bruni!

Really sucks to go down and cut the season short right after that high. But at least Neko probably has plenty to keep busy with Frameworks till he’s back in the start gate
  • 11 0
I was thinking the same thing... I was stoked that we were going to see Neko pushing towards the top again this season. Now there is one less reason to deal with the UCI BS and follow the world cup season...

Neko has one of the best story lines in MTB right now. Gutted. Heal up man. Can't wait to see your comeback.

heal up Neko sheeeeesh brutal looking crash. After a shattered pelvis a few summers back all I can recommend is delaying that first bowel movement as long as possible and not watching anything that might throw you into a fit of laughter early on in recovery days..so painful
  • 25 1
Maybe Neko can get an up & coming privateer on his bike this season and he can crew chief, for a number of races, while he recovers? Would hate to see all that R&D put on the back burner.
  • 4 0
I believe he has a couple guys riding the bikes already so I’m sure he will keep the effort going while down
  • 16 0
He’s already got Asa Vermette on the bike and helping him along the way and helping him progress as a racer! Way rad to see! Asa’s seeding placed him third at TN Nationals. I think he’s America’s next top talent for sure! And after seeing his 3rd at the US open last year with some heavy hitters there, there is no doubt that kid has top level speed already
  • 2 0
 @stormracing: that’s awesome!
  • 6 0
@stormracing: Asa is sick and he is a great humble kid too. if you pay attention to the DHSE footage you will see Neko has a few young guns on that wicked bike from the more local scene.

Back to Asa...check him out on roots and rain...this kid is no joke smoke.
  • 1 3
@stunnanumma1: I don’t know who it was, but I watched someone at Collegiate Nationals on a frameworks bike throw a fit and throw the bike at the ground. Not a great look.
  • 4 0
 @ShreddinThePig: kids do stupid stuff
  • 2 0
@stormracing: holy cow, I rode with Asa last spring and he is on another level. And I think he's still too young to race Jr's at World Cups!
  • 2 0
@stunnanumma1: yeah he definitely has a great head on him! Very humble and just a genuine upbeat fun kid! I remember seeing in one of his videos some other groms shredding his frames. Can confirm that bike is incredible from riding it! It’s definitely cool seeing him let a handful of kids test/put it through the paces for longevity/durability.
I do know Asa is actually on the frameworks team with Neko now which is so sick!

Oh most definitely! Nothing that kid can’t ride. I’ve taken snow laps with him, sand tracks on the moto, you name it.. that kid can shred it!
  • 1 0
@ShreddinThePig: you remember who it was? I helped a little on the slalom build at collegiate champs this last year at purg and I also was lapping DH every day too/know a bit of those kids.. I don’t really remember seeing a frameworks? You sure it was a frameworks?
  • 2 0
@BetterRide: Gene! Been a bit. Good seeing BetterRide pop up. Hope you are well!
Yeah he really is something! For his age and just in general, he is on another level for sure. Just turned 16 and was too young. He’s currently racing anything SE in the USA, possibly some NW Cups, and all of the crankworx series. Next season will be the full junior World Cup season. I’m definitely stoked to watch him get after it!

Sounds like an awesome idea! Put me in coach!
  • 11 0
Noooo. Heal well bro. One of life's lessons is never forget how to heal its an art we all need to keep practicing especially as we age. I am 65 now and am a bit of an expert in the process. Stay positive although I know that's just how you are anyway

I herniated a disc in my neck in one of the most boring crashes you can imagine. Degree of injury and impressive nature of a crash don’t always correlate.
  • 1 0
@GnarAZ: look at his legs just after he hit the floor - before the other rider passes him.
  • 9 0
Damn. Sorry for Neko to see the season go down the drain like this. Crash looked weird, wonder how that fron wheel suddenly went down
  • 5 0
Yeah kind of a weird buck
  • 4 0
Not sure his season is already down the drain. First world cup isn't even for another 11 weeks.
  • 1 0
@sino428: Let's hope that's enough for him to get in good shape again!
  • 1 1
@ak-77: even he’s not by the first race I would assume he will be back for a good portion of the season.
  • 3 0
@Dogl0rd: the dirt was really soft right before that set of rocks so the compression went down faster/further than anticipated and the rebound came from the much smore solid rocks.
  • 4 0
@sino428: 16 weeks is the standard before weight bearing with a pelvis fracture....
Ask me how I know!!
  • 2 0
@scstrail: yeah I don't know how you could quickly come back from that when you can't even walk. You lose so much conditioning. But pros seem to come back faster than mortals somehow
  • 1 1
@Dogl0rd: I would think it all depends on the severity of the fracture and how it’s treated. If he’s getting surgery I’m assuming that means plates/screws which could mean he could start weight bearing sooner. Just speculating though.

Looked like such minor crash too? Shitty luck...
  • 31 0
Minor? Dude got absolutely bodied by that berm
  • 5 0
Doesn't take much to break a pelvis. I broke mine in a criterium, on the road.
  • 1 0
@AppleJack76: definitely more commonly caused by cycling than many folks realize. Friend's wife broke hers crossing over wet railroad tracks on a tandem, another broke his while crashing to avoid a deer that ran out in front of him on the road.
  • 11 1
I don't understand all the downvotes, that crash wouldn't get a single comment on a friday fails reel! With you on just shitty luck more than a brutal crash.
  • 4 0
I think it was less the crash than the feature looks like something that a rider at Neko's level could ride 1000 times, barely think about, and come through perfectly fine 999. But the 1000th got and slammed him.

it looks that way because he's a professional and not a 15 year old thrashing a poorly made jenk ramp. Want to get a better judgment of his speed, watch the bike after the crash. Ever see minor crashes where a bike flips light speed thirty yards down trail. That's why all the down votes.
  • 7 0
Ignore the downvotes - I agree. Sometimes somewhat simple crashes are the ones that hurt / injure the most.
  • 3 1
@pink505: I think a lot of the Friday Fails crashes result in injuries, not permanent (assume they would not show those) but for sure a lot of broken bones from sudden deceleration over the bars type crashes, off drops etc.
  • 3 0
@gramboh: Not permanent? Not sure about the integrity and assumption here. Someone sends it they show it.
  • 3 0
I broke mine in 2 places at Duthie. It's how I learned you are not supposed to lean way back on a step up. It hurt like nothing I've ever felt. Healed nicely and quicker than I imagined so I can only hope the same for Neko....
  • 1 3
I also thought that it didn't look like such a major get off. I was wondering if his buddy running over him was the real culprit?
  • 7 0
Best wishes for a quick and full recovery! If only FTW could weld bones!
  • 2 0
Wow such bad luck. Looked like he was slightly off line to the left...back wheel snagged the slight rock lip and OTB he went. Rider following rode the line slightly to the right...
  • 1 0
There is a small dark crater just before the rock lip on the left. His back tire sunk in that first contributing to the buck. The other rider totally avoided that small wet crater then hucked to flat. I think Neko fully intended to casually ride the drop and carve into the turn to maintain some speed unlike the other dude who would have braked hard regardless of Neko rolled up in the trail. Freaking blows. Positive thoughts to heal up fast.
  • 1 0
Bummer. Neko's entire program has been so cool to watch, and really seemed like he was hitting his stride. I was really looking forward to watching him this year. Get well soon!
  • 2 0
Been there mate, wishing you a full & speedy recovery. A broken pelvis will give you a superpower though. You'll know when a cold front is blowing in before it hits.
  • 2 0
Bummer what Nekos is doing is one of the most interesting parts of DH racing at the moment! Heal up for fort bill please so I can see your bike in real life.
  • 3 0
Neko is NC's pied piper. we love the dude and what he is doing around the state. Heal well bro!
  • 3 0
 That sucks... heal quickly!
  • 2 0
Dang what a drag he really looked like he was on world cup podium pace after crankworx!
  • 2 0
A shame after that 3rd place in NZ against the heavy hitters! Good timing at least as the WC starts so late...
  • 1 0
Gutted...one of my faves to follow!! Heal up quick and keep the frameworks project moving forward! so cool
  • 1 0
Heal up fast Neko! Love everything you're doing for the sport. The southeast would not be the same without you.
  • 1 0
it's always the mundane feature that you've hit 1000x that somehow gets you that one time you're just cruising.
  • 1 0
Ouch. That has got to hurt. Kind of thing that will hurt when it rains when you get older. Oosh. Heal up !
  • 1 0
Ouch, heal up and take your time!
  • 2 1
Dude cannot catch a break, no pun intended.
  • 1 0
That sucks big time, all the best in your recovery Neko.
  • 1 0
Hate to see it. Heal up Neko!
  • 2 1
Good to know that even the best of us get bucked out of nowhere.
  • 1 0
And run over by our homies
  • 2 1
Damn, that prototype 40 damper seems a bit heavy on the rebound!
  • 1 0
Gutted. Heal up Neko we’re still with ya!
  • 1 0
Heal up soon Neko. Extra gutted for you after you went so well in NZ.
  • 1 0
One of my favorite riders... Heal up quickly
  • 1 0
There was so much carnage at this event, it was wild.
  • 1 0
Wishing you a quick recovery Neko!
  • 1 1
Shit! Don't ride slow, this creates the worst crashes. Just ride fast in the normal flow.
  • 1 0
Crashes you never expect are the scariest.
  • 1 0
Heal up Neko!!!! One of the best people in the game.
  • 1 0
Ahh shit that sucks. Heal well Neko!
  • 1 0
Fox really can't get rear shock rebound right.
  • 1 0
 Bro takes care.
  • 1 0
 Heal up Neko!!!
  • 1 0
 Zut!!!
  • 1 0
 damn.
  • 1 0
 Ouch!
