The best part about doing this animation, was meeting the legend himself, Taj. I remember getting Expendable Youth VHS for a birthday present, Taj had such a sick segment, I’ve been a huge fan since

You need to tell stories on here more often

Fuck yeah, Taj is a master bike handler.

So well done. Taj wins the internet today.

I wish the same could be said for the medics who almost strangled him to death by trying to jam his feet into the ambulance. WTF its almost like the medics are just as bad over there as they are here in the U.S.
  • 4 0
Ya, this was f-ing hilarious. They probably gave him some ketamine and midazolam. Works wonders for the nerves

@scott-townes: I've had great medics in the USA. Painting with a big brush, you are.

So sending a 40 foot, rock strewn gap is OK but flying in a plane or helicopter is scary. The human mind is a strange place.

Perhaps is fear to what you can't control...

came here to say that.. LOL .. great animation too... I like the ambulance and the feet stuck in the doors LOL

As funny as this portrayal of Minnaar's crash seems, this story highlights many serous issues with the first responders and Injury protocol at these events. These issues need to be addressed before an avoidable tragedy occurs. A rider's union that stresses rider safety seems like a pretty smart thing right about now.

Totally agree but I don’t know that a union is going to be able to change much in a 3rd world country like

@eteyber: I wonder what level the likes of Afghanistan, Timor-Leste, Lesotho, Rwanda, and many others are if Italy is already at a "3rd world country" level.

Taj and Greg are national treasures! Err, I mean, international treasures? World treasures? Aw whatever, you know what I mean.

MORE OF THESE STORIES!!!! Crash stories, other race pit stories. Behind the scenes..... Any fun stories riders want to share. The animation of Gregg's feet out the back of the ambulance is hilarious. That whole scene just sounds funny amid the chaos of dealing with a potentially serious injury.

Stories from guys like Bender or Simmons from early days of freeride or the first Rampage would be amazing! Or any story from Cedric Gracia or Peaty.

Brett Tippie does a podcast.
Check it out. No CG yet but Wade has been on it, Schley and others too.

How have I been watching Greg all his career without knowing he didn't like flying!
  • 3 0
 Exactly! I had no idea
  • 14 0
That was really well done. Brave man to admit your fears like that Greg! Getting hurt in Italy sounds alot like getting hurt in West Virginia. There are places you would rather have it go down for sure! Glad your on the mend. Your my hero Minnaar! My inspiration every time my 42 year old ass rides something people say i shouldn't.

Wahaha, I hear you. WV ended my season in 21, those are some seriously solid trees
  • 1 0
@gregminnaar: Yeah man. That's tight little spot there that got you at snowshoe. I saw the first race on TV and thought they must have opened that corned up to be carrying that much speed into it. Then I got there for the second race and was like nope it's still the same as always, WC racers are just another breed.

Bike stories animated by Taj are the best! I'm not sure anything will ever top the story of Matt Hoffman and the Lars Ligament, though...

Don’t know why I’m smiling so much watching/listening to Greg telling a story about what sounds like a pretty bad day but it was great! Taj’s animation is great and have always enjoyed listening to Greg talk as well, loved it!

Can every article be animated by Taj from now on?
  • 4 0
Do not do what Greg did by riding down the mountain. Check out the video of the wrestler who broke his neck then jumped back into the ring for what can happen if that strategy goes wrong.
  • 3 0
Personally, I find the risk-to-reward ratio of riding down a WC track with a broken neck so high that it's mind-boggling to me anyone would even consider it. I guess that is part of what explains why I am not one of the greatest DH riders in the history of the sport. Glad you made it out of this with a fully functional body, Greg. And the animation is just awesome.

It's so relateable to make an irrational decision like that out of fear, glad it turned out okay

More or less what happened to me, fractured vertebrae, doctor who does not notice, too tall for the ambulance and feet out of the hatch and travel to the hospital similar to a stage of the Paris-Dakar. What can we say we hope not to fall off the bike even in Val di Sole.
  • 2 0
Cracking vid, had me chuckling and remembering that European ambo drivers are on the wild side. The ambo driver in Andorra who took my broken a*s to hospital thought he was Ayrton Senna. Good to hear you’re on the mend Greg.

On a side note: I worked on drill rigs for 17yrs and I still cringe when I see helicopters. Contraptions, pure and simple.

I see Taj...I click..... I remember him from back in the 90's BMX Plus days too....

Glad your OK @Gregminnaar and that the Swedish MIPS maybe helped a bit.

Seems like nothing much has changed with Italian medical support since Ronnie Petersson’s F1 crash in ’78

 Absolute BEAST and LEGEND.

Who knew being scared of heights would make a man continue down a WORLD CUP DH track and one of the gnarliest, if not the gnarliest tracks of them all with a broken neck. Absolutely insane.

A bit nuts but i’m glad he’s on the way to recovery and is not paralyzed!

Nice one! Get well soon, young lad. We still want to see some more crazy lines next year!!!

 Absolutely awesome!!

This has got to be the best video I’ve seen this year. Bravo. Injecting comedy into such a serious situation.

Can't relate to the fear of flying... flying doesn't scare me at all. Watching GM world cup runs POV and picturing myself going that speed = terrifying.
  • 2 0
Love stories like this, that are usually shared over beers (or wine). crazy there is so much more to the story than what you could ever imagine. glad your on the mend Greg
  • 2 0
i think Pinkbike should have Taj animate all their stories, bike tests, articles, news items... hope your feeling better Greg.
  • 1 0
What a great way of telling that story! Thank you for sharing and all the best for the rest of the recovery. Very glad it did not turn out worse. But please never ride down a dh track with a bad injury again…
  • 1 0
Amazing. Also, not sure how it worked for everyone else, but two more Taj fixes came up at the end of the video in the recommend collage. Watch them. Mat Hoffman (ridiculous!) and Roscoe (wft hilarious!).
  • 3 0
Really nice hehehe, very fun video about a bad crash and a broken T3.

Hi Greg! A great way to cure the fear of flying is exposure. Come to Norway and I'll bring you with me for a day at work - Jump seat and all. You'll love it!
  • 2 0
I want everything from now on presented in cartoon format. That was hilarious.

I had no idea how serious the injuries were. Glad the kid's gonna be OK. Great story and well told in 'toons.

Omg Taj, this is amazing, brilliant job. And Greg, I feel with you, no baskets.

 Genius! Hilarious!

Why most pros (specially top guys) not wearing neck braces? I don't get it.
  • 2 1
Neck braces have only mixed results and in some case case cause more damage when it comes to two wheeled sports where riders eject and their bodies/heads can be impacted in many different directions. In a car, where a drive doesn't 'exit' their seated position, devices like the Hans Device can help.

 Hollow carbon stem bolts. Amazing.
  • 2 0
That could've gone way worse. So glad GM is o.k.

Are we gonna start seeing lil'Minaars in the future?

I know - did he get secretly married like Gwin did?

We need more animated stories like this. Peaty and Warner in Les Gets is a top one too

Amazing how much is hidden from us?
Taj did an great job, making a serious situation, Funny!

Awesome stuff Taj. It appears Italians treat patients the same way they build cars and motorcycles.
  • 2 0
Yes..infacts the doctors saved him from getting paralized (despite Greg's irresponsible behaviour) and found a solution for getting him on the helicopter.... and you know something? In italy you don't need an health insurance to get medical assistance even if you are from another continent.

So good! Setting a new bar on DH narration on this one Taj. Greg, heal up soon bru.

OMG TAJ...that was the best GD thing I've watched in awhile...Heal up GREG!!! Two GOAT's make BIKING THE BEST!!
