on a scale of 1 to Cam Zink how gnarly is rampage going to be this year
  • 50 1
hopefully Cam Zink. I've heard about the course from the boys and it's gnarly.
  • 72 5
do you think Norbs got robbed?
  • 53 1
 haha
  • 6 2
 Does he ?
  • 22 0
I think both Norbs and Cam McCaul got robbed last year. Watching Cam hit the canyon gap in person was absolutely unreal. Question is, who will be the first to flip it?
  • 50 1
Any chance of a Bearclaw Invitational Rampage with only natural lines??
  • 241 0
I'm working on it. I might have an announcement in the next year, stay tuned.
  • 5 0
 Sweet.
Should make it the vancouver island invitational , and hit a few spots. Smile
  • 4 0
yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
  • 6 1
Holy crap... that's amazing if that happens. Big mountain def. needs another event.

Will you be at the Bit and Spur "rehabbing"?
  • 7 0

MTB is one of the best sports we have... don' t have aything special to ask, but i' ve never seen a football player or motocross champ doing this, glad to see someone being famous and accessible at the same time Smile

sorry for my horrible english and get well soon Wink
  • 40 0
 thanks, you all rule!
  • 6 0
minipaint, why are you apologizing for your English? That was pretty much flawless actually in terms of understandability...
  • 6 0
because when i write something i' m trying to be clear but the half the time i don' t know if it' s correct or if it' s totally nonsens ^^
  • 41 0
How big is that huge drop off the sender, and I don't mean in Pinkbike feet!
  • 38 0
Not as big as everyone thinks it is, it's a few feet bigger than last years.
  • 127 1
Dude I think I speak for everyone here when I say how cool it is that you took some time out of your day to talk to us. Super rad, thanks!

Would you ever consider making a new film possibly a sequel to Where The Trail Ends?
  • 64 0
We're working on the concepts now, stay tuned.
  • 9 0

  • 2 0

And hope you Get well soon!
  • 1 0
Wil you come back to Gobi Desert for WTTE II?
  • 31 0
Sorry to see you're injured Homes, can you get a judging / commentating position at Rampage instead? They need some guidance after last year's results. Get well soon
  • 40 0
I do agree with you on that they need some guidance and I will lend my loud opinion. But doctors orders are keeping me off moving around the mountain.

how many pounds of kale and wild salmon do you think you consume in a week?
  • 100 1
3 pounds of kale, 5 pounds of salmon when at home. Cause I don't eat farmed salmon, that shit's gross.
  • 34 0
 you're like a grizzly bear!!
  • 20 0
I've read the article that Cam Zink wrote "sometimes it's bigger than you", you also seem ready to put yourself beyond limits for the sport (you told people to ride).
But what is your opinion about the Xgame that happened in Munich, I mean a lot of riders crashed, the weather was bad and the huge features didn't helped...

Does MTB has to go bigger with only a few rider able to finish the track or should the builder have something smaller with more riders (and therefore more different style etc) ?

PS : rampage won't be the same without you... sorry for you Frown heal up quickly !
  • 23 0
XGames we all struggled mainly because of the wind. In terms of going too big, I think there is a place, as long as it is built properly.
  • 1 0
 thx for your answer !
  • 1 0
It was said that you had some input into/advice on the building of the X games course but they just ignored it, are the organiser's aware of their screw up in that regard, and do you think they'll sort it out for next year? It would be sick to see you guys show X games what freeride is really about (shame it's not in Utah).
  • 2 1
there is no x-games next year
  • 21 2
Hey Darren, I recently had a pretty bad break in my foot and will be out for about 2 months. I wanted to know how you handle injury, what keeps you going on the day to day grind of being wounded? Also how do you transition back into riding? Can't wait to see the finials this Sunday! Go BIG!
  • 25 24
Was Just introduced to the (freestyle mountain bike) scene this last year.went to my first Crankworx event. got to see you and all the boys compete..was awesome...just wanted to say that it sucks u are not able to compete at rampage. hope to see u compete in upcoming events ..stay strong and dont give up! Cheers!
  • 40 1
When you get hurt enough, it doesn't seem to faze you as much as it did the first time, I kind of enjoy the down time, not look at it as being bummed out. Cause sooner or later, I'll be back on the bike.
  • 7 0
Agreed! Great time to spend playing some downhill domination on the ole PS2!
  • 24 1
demo or status ? whats your favorite ?
  • 64 1
demo carbon if I was allowed to ride one.
  • 7 1
wait, you say you dont have a carbon demo ?
  • 22 1
you shred to hard for carbon ? Wink
  • 91 2
 I guess so..
  • 8 2
they will let you ride a cabon demo if you stop hitting everythink Wink
  • 25 2
Why are you Not allowed to Ride a carbon Demo?
  • 8 2
I think he means with his injury.. if he were allowed to ride a bike it would be a demo carbon
  • 6 5
I think it's because spec. has made status for freeride, and demo for downhill. What spo sor said must be done, or ridden in this case. Sorry for my english.

carbon dh bike in slopestyle? I think Specialized would shit bricks if a freerider somehow snapped Spesh's first carbon dh frame during a huge competition in front of the MTB world to see. although judging from how prepared they were for the world cup season this year i wouldnt be surprised also (e.g. changing frame sizes and chainstay lengths, not in the same week)
  • 18 0
Something i've wondered for a long time is when you take trips to places such as the Gobi desert and Nepal what do you take in the way of spare components? I imagine for you guys trashing something such as a rim isn't too uncommon so i was just wondering what you do to deal with this in far out locations?
  • 60 0
To be honest, the parts on my bike are pretty solid, I rarely go through components or parts, but definitely tubes/tires/rear rim abd maybe a spare derailliur and rotor. In Nepal I lost all my barrings out of my headset in the middle of no where. Took me 3 hours to find all the barrings..
  • 5 0
There is a Specialized Bike Shop in Urumqi now,so you can get their full support if you need.
  • 19 0
Noticed you did a DH race this year... Any chance you will race any more next year, like any of the NW cups? Underworld cup?
  • 39 0
Yes, love to. I love racing, I grew up racing, it's one of those things I wish I could more of cause it's fun.
  • 25 4
 Your my hero.
  • 21 5
I'm 44 sit behind a desk over 50 hrs a week, but ride prime freeride / dh in sunny Wales at the weekends... what's my chance of a wildcard on rampage next year and getting a shot at the title???
  • 24 0
Come on out, let's see what you got!
  • 15 1
 Hey Darren,
Watching what happened to Washington's park what do you think of Coastals Park plans? Think its feasible with a ferry ride and such a small population? Its pretty expensive to maintain and run lifts etc though. Hope it works. Any insider scoop on the biz plans?
  • 34 0
It's an amazing idea, it's the future.
  • 15 0
Whats your take on Zink wanting to flip the sender stepdown? If he does it will it be as big to the sport as the 360 in 2010? Is it possible? Wish you the best recovery, you are a true inspiration!
  • 30 0
It's super badass, Zink is an animal.
  • 2 3
Zink's 3 was off the Icon sender. Icon is a bit bigger now so I think it goes without saying a backflip would be a much bigger deal haha!
  • 14 0
which style of riding do you prefer: more big mountain freedride/ dh stuff or more fluid dj/slopetstyle stuff
btw get well soon
  • 71 0
I love both and I struggle all the time looking into my garage at my 8 bikes and deciding which to ride today.
  • 48 0
It's nice when that is the hardest question of the day...
  • 34 0
mmmm as do I. Then I realize 7 of them don't exist so I just hop on my Status and go hit the xc trails, haha. You're a legend and you've earned everyone of those bikes (and a carbon demo if you ask me).
  • 10 0
What are the 8 bikes you have?
  • 5 1
@claw could u give us a list of all the bikes you have
  • 10 0
are there any disaplines of biking that you haven't tried? which ones would you like to do the most? are the more recent slopestyle competitions becoming too much like DJ courses or are big bikes not needed as much because of top class building?

thanks,
  • 12 0
I've done most everything, I have a bike for everything. It's hard to find the time to ride everything though.

So u even have a cyclocross bike? And I don't know if u got a chance to read the article today about how we (us cyclists) need CX but i was wondering if you agreed with Mr. Wragg in his opinion/ idea of what CX really should be, I race enduro and even at 15 I know that CX isn't the best it could be, and I know that I would love to one day be a big mountain rider......
Thanks for being a huge champion in my eyes and a hero to us kids and adults alike keep up the good work and mad healing vibes your way brotha!!
  • 14 1
In your opinion, whats the hardest trick to learn, the most fun trick to do, and the coolest looking trick?
  • 15 0
I'd say front flip or tailwhips are the hardest.
  • 9 1
Hey Claw hope you feel better quickly! My question is do you think Mountain Biking will ever be as big as the main stream sports we see that get so much coverage like baseball, football, basketball? We've seen MTB move into the Xgames, NBC has now picked up Rampage, it can only get more noticed from here right?
  • 12 0
yes I think it will continue to grow, but the accessibility for the public is difficult because we're so far out from the city. Also the sport is pretty expensive for everyone to get in to, where a bat and mitt are pretty cheap..
  • 1 0
More people in the sport = more bikes sold = better prices = more bikes sold. It can only be a good thing!
  • 12 0
Why'd you break my parent cd player so many times in high school?
  • 25 1
Because the Yanny CD was always in there..
  • 2 0
Claw, God that was funny, hehehehe Smile
  • 8 0
Do you think that rampage is being too built up with wood and not enough natural lines? Also are there too many riders for the amount of space on the mountain causing people to destroy other peoples lines during the competition?

By the way sorry to hear about the injury, I hope you recover fast.
  • 11 1
Personally I prefer dirt, but a little bit of wood helps in certain situations. I like the amount of riders it adds flavor to the competition so it's all good!
  • 6 0
Sick thanks man, I can't believe that you actually responded. By far one of the coolest riders out there!!!
  • 7 0
Claw, heal up fast. Wish you were able to ride Rampage this year. I always enjoy watching you there.

Year round lift access, Where is it?
Why don't you and I open one up in Cali? Sounds like a good project right? Ill move the dirt you can do the planning and heal up.

Hit me up if you know of anyone one needing some IT work in the bike industry.. I need to get more involved. I write software, websites, anything you need my man.
  • 17 0
sounds great, let's do it. I'm trying to open up a bike park in the dominican republic actually...

Bummer on the injury, wishing you a good full recovery...
  • 7 0
 Hey Darren-

where else do you see or hope for the Rampage to go? Is the current location still inspiring you and your peers? It looks scary with endless possibilities watching as a fan but are you and the other riders ready to try another location?

thnx and heal up well.
  • 17 0
Yes we're stoked to find a new location. We're actually looking for another location for next year.
  • 3 0
thnx for takin time to answer. that is seriously exciting news. hope it all comes together! can't wait. lookin forward to seeing u competing next year.
  • 1 0
I‘ve got an idea, the riders all over the world build the trail where the mountain is located in and ride it ,and then show them to Red Bull Rampage. It gives all the ride a chance to be one of Rampage.
  • 8 1
What's up Claw, any thoughts on the contest leaving the second rampage zone next year, anything specific you were hoping to get done or see there before the departure? Also, as it's obviously a necessary thing to switch it up at some point, and i assume you're a part of the committee choosing the next zone, are you guys looking for anything drastically different than what we've seen thus far?

Rough luck with the injuries man, good luck and see you at Joyride course testing next year haha.

Dustin
  • 10 0
Love to see someone flip the canyon gap. I personally would love to see a new site, lots of rad zones on BLM land which makes it very hard to get approval. We've looked at places that are drastically different.
  • 7 0
How much harder is it for you to try to stay healthy competing as many years as you have? Has your preparation and routine during the off-season changed that much in the past several years?
  • 13 0
I hit the gym super hard. My diet has completely changed. I train as much as I can, this summer getting injured 3 times in a row screwed me over.
  • 2 0
Thanks for the reply...I am getting to that age myself where I can no longer eat what I want and just show up and ride hard without some other type of preparation both mental and physical...you are an inspiration!...keep it up!!
  • 9 0
Does 'the fear' ever go away? Or does it just decrease till its not a problem?
  • 30 0
fear is a tool that never really goes away, you just need to learn to direct it in a positive manner.
  • 6 0
 Hey Claw,

Bummed for your injury bro !

Stepping aside from all the Rampage questions

Whatta ya think of lil old NZ down here in the southern hemisphere ?

Have you been here in the last year or so ? The MTB scene is getting better every year ! Farm Jam and the Not Bad vid gives you a heads up of the south island goodness, north islands getting pretty sick too ! Come for a shred some time soon eh ? !
  • 4 1
Was just about to ask this!
  • 14 0
I think the NZ scene is awesome, when I was there it was super fun and rad and love to come back and play with all you rad folks.
  • 1 0

Last year you ran a Crossmax SX front wheel with a Deemax rear. I've seen some WC racers doing that as well during this season of racing. What is the logic behind this wheel choice?
  • 11 0
front wheel super light, plenty strong. But in the rear I need the strength.
  • 2 0
 Thanks!

As far as i know you broke your back two times already? Unfortunately I broke my back pretty back almost two month ago now. But I got away pretty good considering what could have happened. Through surgery one vertebra had two be stabilized with bolts and stuff in 4 other vertebras, which will be removed in one year. Did you have material to stabilized your broken vertebras too? What would you say are the most important steps to get back on the bike after such a major injury and which tips do you have for me to recover from it and build up my muscles again? Cheers for the answer and heal quick bud!
  • 26 0
I was lucky on my back breaks in they were fractures with no displacement. So no bolts. But my advice to get back riding, is to pound the crap out of your core and legs at the gym and lose the extra pounds from sitting around watching NWD and eating chips.
  • 1 0
thanks for the answer! any particular exercises you know from your back recovery, which were extremely helpful and important. Which non extreme sport would you suggest until get back out there in a year? Super determined to do whatever it takes over the year to get my body where it needs to be and save a ready for riding BC again
  • 3 0
wish I could give more props

A while back, you came out for a comp in Snowshoe, WV. Do you ever plan on coming back to the east coast (Snowshoe or anywhere in the region) to help us boost our scene or change it up again? Although it's exploding, we still need all the help we can get, and you have a ton of fans here. On a side-note, watching your dedication, discipline, and straight up talent inspires thousands of us to ride our bikes. THANK YOU, and good luck with your recovery this fall.
  • 7 0
I'd love to come back east, we just need someone to put on another rad event and I'll see you there!
  • 4 0
Totally un-rampage related, but I'm still curious to your answer

If all things I've heard are correct, and you grew up in Qualicum Beach you have to admit is one of the best places in the world (I grew up just across the water on Lasqueti Island). My question is if you could live anywhere in the world, would Vancouver Island still be your final choice?

I've done very limited traveling, but I have yet to find somewhere I like more then the Island, just wondering if you've found a place you like more in your years of touring the globe.
  • 13 0
to be honest I can live anywhere in the world and I choose to live on the island. It's honestly the best place there is, I can explore the island the rest of my life and still never explore all the fun things there are to do.
  • 1 0
What's one of your favorite MTB destinations in the states? Not including Virgin?
  • 2 0
Well I'm pretty young (1Cool and this just confirms my thoughts! I'm so grateful for living on the coast, heal up soon and keep shredding, not many people get me as stoked to ride as you do!

Darren, just wanted to say I am a 31 year old Mountain Biker still ripping and I probably never would have done it without seeing how you killed it at Rampage 2. I am glad you are still ripping as well. I think you have the most dialed table 3's in the business and the sweetest Superman Seatgrab Indian Airs. Just wanted to say thanks for being an inspiration.
  • 6 0
 thanks man.
  • 5 0
Is there any jet not existing big mountain / freeride event you´d like to see added to FMB world tour? like a B.C Rampage or even a Alps Rampage?
  • 3 0
I will be watching Rampage on a no doubt slightly un-reliable internet connection, the same way I watch most MTB events, what is it gonna take to make this sport a live TV event like so many other far duller sports ??!!!! ps get well soon Darren.
  • 6 0
Thanks man, appreciate the love. It's difficult because we are in the middle of the desert, if we were able to get our sport into a coliseum, we'd be able to get more fans out live and get it on network tv. It'll also be on NBC December 21st.
  • 3 0
You were taking big part of evolving professional freeride to the level where it is right now. What do you think about the future? Bigger features, faster lines, more tricks, or at some point the "evolution" will slow down, or maybe stop?
  • 4 0
I'd like to see more technical riding combined with big tricks and big booters. I think it will continue to accelerate with rider progression.
  • 3 0
Hi Darren, I heard your out of rampage this year. I would have loved to have seen you race at rampage, since you were the one who inspired me to grow a huge passion for DH/FR. I have a question that i've always wanted to ask you and it is, How did you get to where you are today? How did you afford to buy your first DH bike? how did you attempt your first big air tricks? Im about to buy my first DH bike and would you recommend a status 2?
ill be rooting for you next season Big Grin please make another epic film! Big Grin
  • 5 0
right on man. appreciate the love. Status 2 is an awesome affordable bike. I just was determined at a young age and loved doing it. Don't really know how it happened, I kept having fun and things fell in to place. So follow you dreams and keep having fun. I got my first bike halfers with my parents. I had a paper route to make money back in the day.
  • 1 0
Hey Darren, sorry I'm late haha, not sure if you'll still see this, but I was wondering whether you prefer the demo 8 or the specialized status as a freeride bike for big hits and stuff, picked up my first demo recently and love it since most the stuff around me is tech, but was wondering what your thoughts are on the status once built up with nice components for freeride? Thanks!
  • 8 0
 Do you hate Protour?
  • 2 0
As a guy riding natural lines exclusively, how do you feel about the manmade stuff?
Do you agree with people saying that we wouldn't be able to go as big without it? Or are you more on Brendog's side (he's the one who tried building a canyon gap out of dirt, if I recall correctly)
  • 15 0
Manmade has its place, but my opinion for Rampage, it's not my favorite. I personally love the natural big mountain stuff. You probably couldn't go as big without machines, but natural big mountain lines are gnarlier.
  • 2 0
This may be a question that you get a lot, but when you go freeriding in Utah, what zones do you go to? I just moved here from Bolivia and i wanna go to Utah sooo, bad but i don't know where to start. Any tips to a downhill rider who wants to start doing some freeride?
  • 13 0
Start with legal old Rampage site on Kolob Res road.
  • 3 0
Awesome! Thank you a lot! Hope you recover soon and heal completely!
  • 3 0
hi Darren , fran here in ireland . i`ve watched you at rampage for years . do you think you dont get high enough marks because you choose big mountain lines instead of the slopestyle stuff that the judges seem to look for
  • 17 0
yes I feel in the past I've been a little robbed of points, but at the end of the day, I choose those lines cause I love them, not because they will get me on the podium.
  • 6 0
oh no... Claw got robbed as well!
  • 2 0
Hey Darren, I'm not going to ask you anything, just want to wish you a fast recovery! Bearclaw Invitational Rampage or not, as soon as you get back on it, keep it pinned and send me a signed photo of you on the podium after winning next years' Rampage. Wish you all the best, you're an inspiration to all of us!
  • 5 0
Are you allowed to pick the colors of your bike's paint job and/or components?
  • 10 0
I used to, but nowadays we run the stock colors, because it's what they want.
  • 8 0
That sucks tell the bike company we won't buy their crap until you get your colors.
  • 3 0
Your a hero to the sport Claw, thank you for pushing the limits and helping mountain biking become what it is today. Do you have anything new planned for the next Berrecloth invitational
  • 2 0
Yeah, hopefully additional events and sites. stay tuned.
  • 2 0
Darren, any possibility of you going down to South America and do some urban DH races? Quito-Ecuador has a 3 race circuit that I think you'd enjoy. Just throwing it out there maybe future filming possibilities down there, scenery is beautiful and health care is good and efficient hahaha
Best to you on your recuperation from the injuries and into next year's season.
  • 2 0
 Claw,
I am a massive fan of yours. I am 14 and really hope on going pro or at least getting pretty far. I know downhill isnt your specialty, but is there any way that you could give me a few tips? I would really appreciate it. You are my inspiration.

same f*cking thing happened with Steve Smith.

Hey man! Its a bummer you wont compete... :/ Do you do have another job other than biking...? You're a Legend! Keep it up and get better soon!
  • 10 0
This is my full time job, so in terms of me getting bummed out, I don't see it that way, it's a good time to reflect on all the positive things and get motivated to come back.

  • 12 6
what does the fox say ?

haha, just came across that song yesterday...
  • 4 0
On a scale of 1 to Rob Warner and Nigel Page at Champrey, how stoked are you that rampage is going to be every year?

First of you are a legend. But second last season I had an accident in which i managed to break my back in 3 places. Seeing as you have also had experiences with injured backs, How does one come back from such an injury? do you feel as if your riding has been altered at all from before breaking your back?
  • 4 0
What did you mean when you said "a carbon if I was allowed to"?
Is the Carbon version for DH racers exclusively?
  • 3 0
 i guess so
  • 4 3
it means specialized is not as confident in their frames as trek..
  • 5 0
I think the fact that Specialized offers a lifetime warranty on their frame and Trek offers 2 years pretty much scratches that.
  • 3 0
i think what it means is they build it (the carbon version) with a race purpose and not freeride , they are probably scared the big hits huge airs might end in a crack that will be highly publicized if people heard "Bearclaw cracked a carbon demo oh nos they suck now" its just a business move imo
  • 1 0
hey darren I remember that the last year you rode the rampage with your back injury my question is this new injury that you have was in the same spot than the last year? and how do you feel about injury a week before rampage?. i hope you comeback pretty soon
  • 1 0
Constantly dealing with injuries you are always able to get back on the horse, do you have anything in the works that is just fun and enjoyable to you and not so competitive and consequential? (movie segments, new events, PARKVIDA Building?)
  • 7 0
Yeah I'm huge on the outdoors, google red bull playground Darren Berrecloth.
  • 1 0
I just want to thank you for getting me into DH sport I remember it was you the first rider I saw on a movie that got me so into this whole thing I have 6 years riding not one bit close to you and hats a lot to admire Thank you.
  • 6 0
That's awesome. I hope you're enjoying it as much as I do.
  • 3 1
Hey darren, im 16 years old, and my biggest dream is to become a redbull athlete, how do they take you under their wing do the notice you on the races or how does it goes?

Thanks!
  • 15 0
Red Bull has their thumbs on all upcoming athletes, but it's not just results, it's riding, personality, charisma. In other words they'll find you.
  • 2 3
So all i have to do is up keep proper forum and be me ( a generally nice kid) and always be polite and talk to everyone and post good race results and they grab me!?!?!?!?! Awesome!!!!! And could u see if red bull would look into maybe making a drink for kids like me that have extreme ADD and take meds that when combined with red bull will cause heart attacks?
  • 1 0
Biking has always been a huge part of my life but I've never gotten to fully pursue it, and being graduated and a quarter of college under my belt, I think it's time. Any advice on where to start? I'm heavily debating on moving up to sechelt to help build the coast gravity park.
  • 1 0
Does your school have a bike club? Do they go to races? Collegate racing is mad fun super laid back and a great way to keep riding. If they don't have a club start one, go to races, thats where i would start.
  • 1 0
na, it's a smaller school. Thanks man!!
  • 1 0
Ohh that sucks we only have 3.5k grads and under grads but it's in upstate NY so a lot of outdoorsie ppl and we have trails on campus which is sweet.
  • 1 0
 Ha Claw !

Could a Moutinbike movie ever make it into the cannes film festival ? Film that peaple out side the sport could watch and appreciate.
I thort a movie that followed a rider from Rampage to Rampage A year in the life of documentary, the ups the downs the the love and the hate would be cool ...your probly the man for the job. Smile
  • 1 0
Firstly healing vibes regarding your injury itl be a shame not to see you at Rampage. Secondly, you say 'if you were allowed' to ride a carbon demo, why is that? Do the big S have a big say in all that stuff? Must be a bummer not being able to ride exactly what you want no? Thanks.
  • 2 0
I am 18, bought my first DH bike (a 2007 Kona Stab) 4 months ago and my biggest dream (since i was 13) is to become a pro DH racer.
Do you think it's possible, considering I'm combining University, working and hard training?
  • 1 0
i've heard other rider saying that utah's spot for rampage has been used in all it's possibilities, do you imagine another place for rampage to be held? Greetings from argentina, we met here a couple of years ago during wtte shooting,
  • 1 0
Hey claw, greetings from the UK!
Have you done any experimentation with bigger wheel sizes? Think they'll make their way into freeride?
Can you do a vid where you do some crazy shit on an Enduro 29er just to show what can be done?!

(Yes I mentioned 29ers, so can see this getting negative props!!!!)
  • 3 0
Loved 'Where The Trail Ends' Especially the Nepal segment. You are by far one of the best riders, but is there any where can get one of those specialzed bearclaw T-shirts?
  • 1 0
you are a hero of mine! it sucks so much that you, sorge, atherton, hannah and smith are missing out on rampage.. wont be the same without you!!! i was wondering if you did autographs? i would be so happy if you did! get well soon pal! rampage next year yeah? and please make another where the trail ends! that was the f*cking best!
  • 6 0
I do lots of signings at events, come by anytime I'm around and love to sign anything dude.
  • 4 0
i got a reply Big Grin omg this has made my year Big Grin the claw is the f*cking man!
  • 1 0
hey claw sorry to hear about your injury. i was really excited to see you this year.

ive heard talk about more big mtn events. Is there any chance of there ever being one for amateurs? thats always been my dream to compete in something like that.
  • 7 0
tough one...bringing amatuers into a big mountain event is scary for the organizer because of liability. My best advice is to keep following your dream and progressing to the point you're able to ride with the big boys.
  • 1 0
 Hi Darren.

Can you please take over running the bikepark at Mt. Washington? You might laugh at the idea, but Im kinda not joking. Someone that knows what they're doing and actually cares needs to run that place. Cut costs by giving volunteers who are willing to put time in on the trail maintenance a deal on lift passes. I'd sign whatever waivers are necessary. Really miss riding there, but dont miss how poorly the place seemed to be managed. Your event is a success because you care and you take pride in what you do. Thats whats missing from the general operation of the park.
  • 5 0
Thanks for the love, I think you have some solid points, the boys at mt wash are working hard to get it back in action. Those guys are a passionate bunch.
  • 2 0
Thanks for answering Darren. Respect to you and everything you do.
  • 1 0
The 'road to rampage' series made a big deal about how you haven't won rampage. When you look back on your career so far, do you consider that a gap in your achievements, or if you never manage to win it do you think you would be happy with your career anyways? Obviously it would be great to win, but at this point would it be more of a feather in the cap of an all-time great career?
On a personal note, I'm sorry to hear about your injury and I hope you recover soon, your riding was a big inspiration to me when I was younger (and still!)
-Bevan
  • 10 0
For me it would be awesome to win, but not the end of the world. My career hasn't been solely focused on winning, but more on having fun and showing people that's it's not just about winning. Although winning would be bitchin
  • 1 0
I want to change de bike: I currently have a Stumpjumper FSR Carbon 2010 and 2008 sx trail. What Specialized bike can bring these two bike: I hesitate between a Stumpjumper EVO 26 "or 26 Enduro S-works ? I want a lightweight bike with a freeride spirit....
  • 1 0
Darren! You're a champ mate! Wish you the very best! I'm always stoked seeing you ride!
MTB riding in South America is growing, it has some amazing places to discover. How important do you consider a bike park for the development of the MTB community? Thanks!
  • 2 0
Would you recommend or allow your kids (if you have any; not sure right now) to get into extreme sports like freeride mountainbiking or other stuff (FMX, freeride skiing etc.)? Get well soon! See you next year at Bergline!
  • 5 0
absolutely. It's the best way to be active in the outdoors and learn the ways of the world.
  • 1 0
Hey Darren. Heal up soon. Backs are a bummer but ur a tough dude. What is your take on the number of rider withdrawals this year? I appreciate you would never speak badly of another rider and I'm not asking you to. More do you feel that downhill is becoming more professional and sponsors don't want their prime racers (Stevie Smith and Gee) risking themselves? I don't know but I feel there's a Suzuki/Pastrana relationship starting to brew with top level racers now.
  • 2 0
the sport can be harsh at times and it's just the nature of the beast.
  • 1 0
Who would you put your money on for next years FMB world tour win?

Do you reckon you could help get an allowance for Europeans to enter the Oakley drop sender design contest?

Who is your favourite rider in terms of style and to be around?
  • 2 0
Only just heard about the injury. Heal fast!

Do you think rampage has become a best trick competition? 3ing the sender for instance rather than a creative line with multiple tricks?
  • 2 0
 Claw,

Any inside tips for old guys that are still looking to push the limit? More park/shuttle? Increased strength training? Without that safety net of a 17 year old's bones the price of failure is a bit steeper.
  • 1 0
its was cool to see you race PNW this year, we also saw either mike hopkins/Agassiz race sea otter.last year a couple of DH based riders rode rampage, with Brendan competing this year.
do you think it's important for MTB pro's to get involved in other disciplines? obviously there is a certain element of danger through injury, however its great to see pro's out of familiar surroundings
  • 2 0
I personally think it's awesome to ride different disciplines myself... I don't think riders should be pressured into types of riding they're not comfortable with, but if they're into it then it's great for the sport yeah.
  • 1 0
Just wanted to say I love your Hornby Island video. I watch it almost every time before I go for a ride. I gets me so fired up, I get goose bumps just thinking about it. Totally encapsulates the feeling of what it means to connect with mother nature with a bike. You're the man.
  • 1 0
Hey Darren! Just wanted to say thank you for all these years in which you never gave up on pushing the sport further everytime, despite the injuries. I'm sure a lot of us grew into mountain biking watching you doing 360 drops in New World Disorders, etc. Keep inspiring people, because even though the sport always needs new tricks every now and then, it needs more people that take the scene on their shoulders and make it their life like you do. Ride on man!
  • 1 0
claw i am an amateur rider from a small island Smile . on 2011 i had a bad accident during practice before a local race. i was reckless during those practice sessions with very good times and i had total control of the bike. i had to quit from DH for 1-5 year and now i am back on the bike. The question i have for you since i know your injuries from the past is how to get back that confidence to shred the trail and dont think twice a drop before making it happen ? any tips or advises ? i am practicing on the bike almost 5 times per week but still cant get that loose and comfy feeling i had before .
  • 1 0
Yo Darren my name is Pedro Lomeli from Mexico and were trying to open a bike park over here just across the border in TJ, theres a small town called Rosarito and its only about 20 mins away from the border, the bike park project is sponsored by a couple of small companies in Mexico and were trying to get some cool peeps to come down and ride the trails, hey beach, sand, great food, great beer what else can you ask for? the truth is I want to know if pros like yourself would be interested in Riding in Mexico, theres a lot of misconceptions with insecurity and all that stuff, we actually live great lives down here, well anyway the point is I know ur trying to open something in DR in the caribbean what would be some tips that you give to us who are new at this to get some cool sponsorships and some sick riders to ride in our park?
  • 1 0
Bummer about the injury. Would have been nice to see you ride at rampage for sure. Your attitude in light of the disappointment is commendable.

A few years back you were a prominent athlete in the collective films and freeride films at the same time. Then, you only had a small role in follow me and nothing in strength in numbers. Was this a choice you made, to focus on NWD? Why? If it wasn't your choice, maybe you can't go into it, but if it was your choice, I'm very interested in why so I will be stoked on you taking the time to answer.

Historically, has there been any one person who you've had a bit of a rivalry with on the slopestyle scene or the film scene? Friendly or otherwise...

Cheers.
  • 2 0
I would have loved to been in SIN, but I just didn't have the opportunity. IN terms of rivalries I'm happy to say our sport is awesome in that we all get along and party and have fun on the battlefield.
  • 2 0
Glad to hear it about the rivalries. One of the coolest things about our sport is how down to earth and friendly the people are- I see it on the trails and it always seemed that way in the media with you guys at the top.
  • 1 0
What do you feel is more gratifying: participating in an event such as Rampage or Joyride and performing a successful run in front of tons of fans live or nailing an insane line on film in the back country with only your friends and a film crew?
By the way I wish you a speedy recovery! Can't wait to see you back on the bike!
  • 3 0
Putting together an all time film segment is the most gratifying thing for an athlete because in 10 years people will still be watching that segment and be just as stoked. But who wins a contest people forget in weeks time.
  • 2 0
claw, how do you feel about the sx trail being scrapped from specialized???seeing you on your custom sx in the opening scene of "Roam" is what got me into mtb !!! I would of thought this was your favourite bile to ride??
  • 1 0
Too bad, I really wished he would have answered your question.
  • 1 0
Hello Darren! First of all, I'm a huge huge huge fan!! As with everyone Big Grin In Europe especially in the Alps, a lot of freeriders are into big mountain riding. Not the typical rampage type but mountaineering and mountain biking at the same time. People climbing big mountains up to 3000m (~9843feet) or even more, and descent trails that aren't typical freeride trails or not even meant for mountain bikes. Maybe you know it already. It's called Vertride/Vertriding. I guess the best video to show this is www.pinkbike.com/video/165568 and many other videos from big-col. What do you think of this? I'm just curious what you think. Smile Thanks! You're the best!!! Big Grin
  • 1 0
Hey Darren your nwd 10 segment is still the best movie segment of all time, got me stoked to go ride the local quarry every day as a kid and think of it as rampage haha, Is filming where the trail ends, nwd, follow me etc as fun as it looks or do you step up your riding to a whole new level for the camera?
  • 1 0
Hey man sorry about the injury, healing vibes being sent your way for sure. I'm about to finish my mechanical engineering degree and would love to get into suspension design or work for any component or bike company. Any words of advice to break into the industry? Know any engineers at specialized I should contact?
  • 1 0
First, thanks for all things you do for the sport. With your legendary parts in many movies (NWD, Where the trails end...), your unique style and your huge freeride lines, you're just a big source of inspiration for me.

Second, what do you think about FMB World Tour, especially races which composes it? Don't you think there are too much slopestyle contest for a "Freeride" cup?
  • 1 0
how you guys handle the fear? i mean when you're afraid of a huge drop you never did before or something like that? how you handle the pressure? you broke your back when i remember me right, how you did it to ride like before?
greets from germany
  • 1 0
When I was younger, I watched the "Stunt Junkies" show on the Discovery Channel and I remember you riding the blue Demo with the Manitou fork on it... think it was 2005. I've been watching you and this sport since then.

Healing vibes from eastern Europe!
  • 1 0
Hope you heal up soon. Ive been dealing with a herniated disk in my neck, from a head-first crash (either that or its been there all along). Are you off the bike completely while healing, or is just pedaling around to stay in shape ok? My doc told me mellow riding is ok (which ive been doing) for now. i am very lucky that im not paralyzed!
  • 2 0
U gonna come join the Alaska Downhill Brigade with Aggy and others next summer in Alaska? Would love for you to come see what we are building and get your input man... There is a BIG future here...
  • 1 0
Hey, looked through most of these, don't think anyone has asked it yet; are you going to be doing any more movies any time soon? I know your last one, "Where the trail ends" did a lot for the sport of mountain biking in terms of exposure which is awesome to say the least!! I'd love to see this sport grow and be more widely accepted. Basically wondering if you'll ever do a movie that focuses more on reaching out and exposing mountain biking to people unfamiliar with it than just how big everyone's tricks are, (though those movies are SICK and I'm sure we don't have to worry about more of those coming out).
  • 5 1
How'd you get the disc extrusion?
  • 11 0
multiple impacts from throughout the summer lead up to the injury. It was a creeper.
  • 2 0
And how long do you recon you will be out?
  • 3 0
 ^^ three months
  • 4 1
Has being raised/living on the island influenced your riding in any way? Any different from life on the mainland?
  • 3 0
Absolutely. I love the outdoors, i love to go big and I love to go fast. The freedom from the amount of terrain, so much available land to go out and build anything you want.
  • 5 1
What stuff did you have planned on your lines this year?
  • 11 0
I was looking at the pre built stuff from last year and a konger drop that I had lined up at the top. So a bit of digging, and using some older stuff. Keeping it big mountain, not slopestyle lines.
  • 1 0
Bummer on the injury. Just watched WTTE and was looking forward to you killing it at Rampage this year. Keep your head up. There's next year!
  • 3 0
How long is the rehab for your disc extrusion?

Hope it's not too painful dude!
  • 5 0
Unfortunately it's 3 months, but it'll be a 100% recovery. And even going to tap in to some new technologies for my rehab.
  • 2 0
Rest well man! Hopefully you'll be back shredding before you know it!
  • 3 0
Hey, as a young rider I want to know how you got started in biking? Did you just shred all day everyday?
  • 3 1
Bummer to hear you're out, you're always great to watch. If Rampage could be held anywhere else, where would you like to see it? Healing vibes you're way amigo.
  • 3 0
I'd love to bring it one of the zones we found in China, but the logistics are a nightmare..
  • 1 0
Haha, I guess they would be. Cheers!
  • 4 1
Do you ever ride Bmx anymore Darren? I remember first seeing you on drop in I think riding a wee bike

Thanks
Josh
  • 2 0
Yes I do. I bring a 20" to the skate parks and on dirtjumps.
  • 2 0
I remember being blown away by you riding a BMX on those dirt jumps in Whistler for Red Bull Elevation, back in 2007 i think it was. Those were the days!
  • 2 0
do you still get in time on the BMX? ever think about competing in another 20" DJ comp or is all of your competitive focus on 26"?
  • 2 0
Do you think a stiffer suspension setup would be better for the features this year, or is a plush arrangement more suited for this year's terrain?
  • 1 0
it depends on the line you're doing. Stiffer better for jumps and tricks, softer willl be needed for the rowdy technical line.
  • 2 0
what has been your biggest accomplishment? and looking back and how you have helped carve out our sport would you change anything sooner or differently?
  • 2 0
Being able to ride my bike and travel to all these amazing places for the last twelve years, not have a day job and still loving every minute of it with a smile on my face! Life is too short have regrets so I wouldn't have done anything differently...
  • 1 0
thanks for the response! i think its really cool that you, stevie and others probably do these things, inspirational atleast for me.. i just asked the person i wish to be a question and got an answer..thats so rad. i wish i could just drop everything excell in biking to get to the top. would you say thats a good risk?
  • 3 0
It's hard to pick a top three athletes going into a comp like rampage, but who favorats so far, based on bug mountain skill?
  • 8 0
that's tough, but I'll go with Zink, Semenuk, TMac
  • 4 0
How often do u ride pump tracks, do you use them for training/cardio?
  • 3 0
absolutely. Super fun and a great work out.
  • 1 0
claw you rock..for starters. but how did you get so far into riding. i mean you are riding xgames, building your own lines up at washington. riding utah how did it all start.
  • 6 0
Same way as you. I had a bike early on and I loved it and followed my dreams and was determined to get rad.
  • 4 0
 Biggest gap you ever hit???
  • 16 0
 taylor swift
  • 14 0
in France, NWD 8 I think, probably 40 down, 50 out. First take overshot it, 2nd nailed it.
  • 2 0
 With mt. Wash closed.
Is that going to effect the invitational? Is it a go for next year?
And is there a plan or pressure to move it to another location.
  • 3 0
It is a go for next year. Same place, the course is still all there.
  • 3 0
I know you and Specialized are basically one, but if the big S would not exist, which bike would you chose?
  • 3 0
Stevie Smith told me you're a buddy of his. Did you celebrate his victory with him ?
  • 5 1
yes we crushed a few wobbly pops.
  • 1 0
I'm watching "The collective seasons" and I really like part at the end where all the riders ride together.
And I don't really have a question but it's still cool you might read this. Big Grin
I hope you get better real soon man !
  • 1 0
thanks for the kind words, see ya on the trails.
  • 1 1
Firstly ; congratulations on your finish at the FMB however my main point why i'm here is i would like some tips please. So you might have guessed that i am 14 and want to become a full time pro further up. I would love to know the thinking pattern of who has actually achieved it. I have never entered a race however i am pretty fast and experienced. I have everything i would need therefore as of equipment theres nothing holding me back. (Maybe money...) I would just like to know what i will have to do to achieve my goal also how you did it. Is there anything i should definitely do. I could go and race danny hart as i have a mate i know who knows him very well. (Try my luck against him. I might win...) Just watch out for me!! When i get heated up i will be on your tail. After all theres only a few years separating us. Thanks for taking the time to read this all mighty FMB racer.
  • 2 0
Wow, I can write to the Legend. Don't know what to ask.. Good luck man, hope u will finally get gold! Cheers from Russia, the bear country!Smile
  • 3 0
cheers for the words brother bear.
  • 2 0
Thinking about Oakley gap this year, makes me remember gaps like jaw gap, and all the Bendering stuff. Do you think it can go much further than this?
  • 3 0
Yeah I think things can go bigger, but they just need to be built properly and safe.
  • 1 0
 Hi Darren,

Have you been back to China since you were out there filming where the trail ends, is it somewhere you love that much that you have taken your buddies to show them?

Rest up and get well soon dude!
  • 1 0
I've been there three times and would love to go shred with my buds but it's three days of travelling to get there!
  • 1 0
obviously rampage is renound for the big mountain riders taking the wins but can you see some of the more Dirt jump/slopestyle orientated riders causing a upset this year or in the near future
  • 1 1
Have you ever ridden a blk mrkt?! And also any tips for learning to flip (use to FMX till I flipped and f*cked up, a little sketchy flipping now haha, and it's not a few hundred pound bike lol) big ups from the east coast though! I'm glad to see biking is staying pretty big here up north! ~ Rikki Ross over in Fredericton New Brunswick!
  • 1 0
How do you feel about the future of 26" wheels?additionally, what can you say about your bike setups and your reasoning for the setup?
Keep pushing the sport man, you give us all something to work towards! -omid
  • 2 0
For some people bigger wheels will suite them but for technical tricks like 3s and flips it definitely doesn't help. I run stiff suspension for responsiveness in tricks and getting into trannies, that's the main focus of my setup.
  • 1 0
A non-industry-fed-response, gotta love it! also, the neck brace you signed back at the Where the Trail Ends showing in Santa Cruz has come in handy (kept my neck intact) a number of times, must be the signature!
  • 1 0
Do you think there are enough zones around the world to support a 'Rampage World Tour'-type event schedule either within years or between years? If so, anything I can do to help it happen?
  • 2 0
Do you keep up relationship with Tyler Klassen? Krankded 5 is still one of my favourite movies where you and Super T. do so big freeirde stuff.
  • 1 0
Yeah I do, but I don't get to see him as often as I'd like.
  • 1 0
Greetings, sir. Where's the rest of that video where you go Mr. Miyagi on Cam's shoulder at 2012 Winterberg? It ends about 1 minute too soon.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpJUT-qVrT0
  • 1 0
you've been riding and active in the sport for a very respectable time, hope you keep shredding for atleast twice as many years Smile

so what bike have you had for a long time that you would never get rid of ?
  • 1 0
Is there any particular bike that you had a lot of input on for specialized? It seemed like the sx trail was pretty much made for you, but I could be wrong. It was a pretty cool bike for sure.
  • 1 1
Do you ever see FR or Slopestyle evolving too far? Is there a limit in your mind where contests will no longer be practical because the jumps and consequences are too big? Every once in a while an edit will come on PB and the banger at the end is more or less a one time deal because it's so dangerous. Do you see the sport headed in that direction?
  • 1 0
Missed ya on the original time slot, but just wanted to wish you the best in your recovery Claw. You guys all seem to heal up quickly so I know it will be soon when we see you back again....cheers bud.
  • 1 0
Not Sure your still on but I really like the natural lines at Rampage. I felt you got it right. Please keep it natural it's amazing when you ride like that. If you want a rehab spot come to Hawaii we'll help you kick back!
  • 1 0
How do I get in contact with your guides in Turpan. I am planning a trip to china next fall. Any info would help. Give me shout when your in AK I have what you are looking for Harookz has my number.
  • 1 0
What drives you to do the insane tricks, lines and jumps that you accomplish? and what goes through your mind just before you hit them? i hope you have a quick and peaceful recovery!
  • 3 0
how do you feel about theirs so much man made stuff this year?.
  • 4 1
Who is your favourite to take the rampage crown this year?
  • 3 0
What's the worst crash/ injurie you have had?
  • 2 0
Worst crash was filming for Kranked 5 in 2002 when I tomahawked through a dense forest and ricocheted off a tree. Worst injury was blowing my ankle in New World Disorder 6.
  • 2 0
 Fark!
  • 4 1
Working in another movie like Where the Trail Ends?
  • 14 0
We are working on the concept right now, hoping to have more information soon on that project.
  • 5 2
Dude, who's your money on for the win?
  • 14 0
If Zink flips the sender, it'll be hard to beat, I hope he builds some cool stuff into it.
  • 3 0
Flipping the sender!!! That's fucking insane! I hope he does, that will be awesome to watch. Healing vibes dude
  • 2 0
Here's a judging question... Sorge had a solid linked run top to bottom last year. Do you think one BIG trick could win it this year with a lesser degree overall run? Or are they looking for progression from last year's winning run?
  • 3 0
Is there anywhere you've wanted to ride but never had the chance?
  • 2 0

If you could change one thing in your career/life, would you and what would it be?
  • 5 0
to have learned to have no regrets sooner in life.
  • 1 0
When I see them jumping, It always amazes me how pro riders seem to defy gravity much longer than other riders. What does it feel like to 'fly' on a bike?

  • 2 0
it feels awesome actually being weightless is a unreal feeling.

Darren, how do you keep motivated in the off season? I find it hard to go biking when the weather turns bad.
  • 2 0
off season is when I'm most motivated. cause I have less obligations and free time to explore tricks and stunts and just push my riding without outside pressure. So being injured at this time sucks cause I can't push myself to my limits.
  • 2 0
HI Darren ! Huge fan of you riding style ! Are you planning to shoot a new MTB film ?
  • 2 0
Not counting the custom paint, do you wear a stock Dissident helmet, or do you have any custom sizing done?

What you think?
  • 1 2

I mean come on, it was your gap to hit first, lets kick his ass if he really did Wink )
