Must Watch: 'Circles' Featuring Brett Rheeder

by COMMENCAL BIKES & SKIS

CIRCLES - the combination of Brett Reeder’s incredibly unique style and the cinematographic visions of director Clay Porter. From the initial idea of an edit at their local trails in Vernon, BC, to the final video featuring locations much further afield! Brett gives us some background and an insight into what the rest of 2024 holds.

Due to unexpected snowfall the crew had to adapt. So, with open minds, and having been inspired by Andreu Lacondeguy’s edit from Chile last year, flights were booked, and the film took a different direction. Below, Brett tells us more in his own words.

bigquotes“Initially, this project was supposed to be shot only in Vernon, BC, but it snowed after our first day, and the trail froze over, which is why you see the snow footage. Basically, Mother Nature delt us a huge curveball. We shot what we could with the snow, and then, knowing we couldn’t shoot the rest of the trail, quickly pivoted, and booked flights to Chile. After seeing what Andreu had ridden in Chile, I knew I wanted to explore that part of the world, so Clay and I explored a few spots to round out the film.”

So, how did the name CIRCLES come about? Clay started noticing a theme of circles within the making of the project, from bubbles to lens flairs to the wheels and tires of Brett’s bike. Then from the additional travel around the globe to a favourite album of Bretts - Circles by Mac Miller, it all made obvious sense in the end.

The COMMENCAL SUPREME DH V5 frame was custom designed and painted to fit the overall concept of the project and we love it!

bigquotesRecently I’ve drawn interest to psychedelic and abstract artwork. So, when I choose the colour of this bike, I scoured the internet in search for colours that blended together nicely. I came across a colour scheme of purple, red, orange and blue that looked magical, so I pitched the idea to my friends at Fresh Paints of Whistler, and they were able to put their own touch on the colours that I sent.

This latest edit has got us fired up for more Brett content, so what can we expect from him and what are his thoughts on his direction in 2024 and beyond?

bigquotesFor 4 years, I’ve been working towards finding a new way of filming and presenting media. We’ve accomplished lots of great projects, but I still strive for something more. For me, it needs to be meaningful. There are a million shred films on the internet, including Circles, and most other mountain bike content. Moving forward, expect new media from me.

bigquotesMy biggest focus this year is being kind to myself, finding happiness, learning new ways of having fun, becoming healthy and strong, letting go of things that hold me down, living guilt-free and staying true to myself and my gut feelings. Over the past couple of years, I had lots of guilt for not being interested in riding slopestyle and freeride competitions, so as I move ahead into this new chapter, I will also be focusing on riding my bike the way I want when I want, for the love of mountain biking and creative filmmaking. There are a couple more things I’m excited to share but can’t just yet. Long story short, I’m looking at 2024 with a great perspective and can’t wait to get underway once the snow melts.Brett Rheeder

We cannot wait either!

And ofcourse Endtroducing (and also Anti Theft Device by Mixmaster Mike) when we were at home.

Love me some Organ Donor - hilarious & hypnotic at same time.

That last long shot was so lush... perfect ending, with the tires and pedals sliding out of frame and the gravel settling back into place. Can't imagine the forethought it takes to put that together in real-time.

That paint job on that commencal is so sick!

Rheeder was so smart to take a break and then come back to the spotlight. The fact he came up riding on flat farmland makes it even more inspiring.

This Clif fella is pretty good.

Pure bliss of rad riding. Minimal tricks just cool spots with just single or dual angles. Well done Clay Porter and team. Even has credits with locations. 90s ski movie vibes.

 Yellow bike is and FRS

No branding on the suspension. Hmm. I thought he made a big deal about choosing Ohlins
  • 2 0
I think it was a filler bike, he also didn't run title which there is zero reason not to since he owns the brand...

No suspension sponsor. That's pretty normal for guys at his level or even below. If they're not getting paid by a brand they're not going to give them free space. Ethan Nell did that for all of his Rampage events. Bienve reps the tuning company that builds his stuff for him, not Fox. Etc. He chose online for his rampage bike and it worked. My guess is that they didn't want to pay up so he's riding what comes with his commercial builds. I was confused about the lack of Title stuff though. You don't usually see people that have a finger in a company NOT placing them whenever possible.

I think he's been on unbranded RS for a little while now.
No idea why/ when Ohlins fizzled, but it seems like RS is the squish of choice in the interim.

@daniilx0: are you sure he owns title?
  • 1 1
@no-good-ideas: unclear as it says founder or current owner . He also isn’t using them anymore it seems.

" Brett Reeder’s incredibly unique style" not sure about that. Filming was great, but I can't say anything stood out riding wise.
