Words: Competitive Cyclist

Decorated MTB racer and 2022 Leadville Race Winner, Hannah Otto, recently completed Moab’s famous Whole Enchilada trail (climb the fireroad and descend the infamous route) on 10/11/22 in a blazing time of 5:50:38. This is the fastest know time recorded for both men and women!

FKT Stats:
-55.27 miles
-8,011 feet of elevation gain
-Lowest Elevation: 4,004 feet
-Highest Elevation: 11,146 feet
-Finishing Time: 5 hours 50 minutes and 38 seconds
-Previous Fastest Known Time on this route (Male or Female): 6 hours and 47 minutes
-Route: https://www.strava.com/segments/33042217

At 16 years old Hannah claimed her first World Champion title in the sport of triathlon, but at age 20 she transitioned to the sport of mountain biking. She went from World Champion in one sport to the back of the starting grid in another. Marking incremental improvements and dreaming big has always been the key to Hannah’s success. It’s taken her to World Cup competitions and the Olympic Long Team on the mountain bike. Hannah wants this video to show anyone that views it that they’re stronger than they realize.

I don't get the whole point of this enchilada thing... My fastest known time for an enchilada is less than 5 minutes. Even while riding a bike I think I could do it under 10...
  • 61 0
It doesn't count as finished until you complete the descent, obviously.
  • 94 0
It depends on the fork you are using
  • 6 1
@tbmaddux: and depending on tolerance levels it could get messy..

 Comment Gold!!! Thank you.

@abueno: just get in attack position and use your legs to soak up the big hits
  • 7 0
If you can stomach it, I'd send the whole thing in 1 go!
  • 4 0
@tbmaddux: depending on how much hot sauce is included, the descent might be prompted to go a bit faster if there is a bathroom at the bottom
  • 3 0
 @Dem628: fire in the hole
  • 8 0
@Dem628: Think the descent he's describing occurs *in* the bathroom...

Does it come out in less than 6 hours?
  • 1 0
You'd need to specify red or green to fully spec out the categories.

@tbmaddux: an you use laxatives or is that considered doping?

I was like "why haven't I heard of Hannah Otto before?" Because she's the new Mrs. Otto. Her maiden name was Finchamp. Former BCBR, Leadville, Midsouth, Pro-XCT winner. Also on the Olympic MTB team. So even though her "new name" came out of no-where, her reputation did not.
  • 21 4
With a new last name like Otto can't blame her. Hannah Otto. My OCD is giddy.
  • 15 0
@DirkMcClerkin: oh my god her new full name is a palindrome!!!! Sweet. Good odds. I wonder if she chose him for his last name. Smile
  • 15 0
@chubby5000: not impressed. She should have married Mr. Annah for a true full-name palindrome. Hannah Annah.
  • 8 0
@DirkMcClerkin: She was on Otto-pilot for this whole ride
  • 1 0
This comment actually made me make that connection haha.

My name is Otto, I loooove to get blotto

@SnowshoeRider4Life: I'm VERY mad for laughing so long at this.

But who has the climb up the single track and go down the fire road KOM?
  • 30 1
I thin this must go to Braydon Bringhurst...
  • 54 1
@betobi: Bullshit, dude dabbed and didn't start over. Mark it a 0 and start over from the beginning.
  • 5 3
@William42: I was really hoping his challenge would be do the whole thing without putting a foot down at all. That'd be next level
  • 2 3
@az-shredder3: gotta wonder if he rode down after the climb. Lol
  • 3 0
@az-shredder3: personally I prefer this Big Wall single push style approach. It let's the crux sections stay really hard, whilst keeping the total surmounted effort collosal.

Every gymrat on instagram with their keto probiotic pre-workout versus this absolute badass that kicked off game day with pancakes and whipped cream.

That's the right way to start a ride like that! MTB food for sure
  • 4 3
Nice! With that one you should be in the running for Comment of the Year.

  • 42 0
 Wow. Thats fast...
  • 2 0
Considering I average around 6 miles per hour on 1 hour up/down loops, that is most impressive.
  • 32 1
Super impressive. After that brutal climb, the dh times are blistering even compared to what I've done on a shuttle using a bigger bike. Well done.
  • 21 0
Wow, truly impressive from an endurance aspect alone. Throw in the ability to clean the "whole enchilada" without a single fault after all of that fatigue from the climb is mind-boggling. Great work Hannah and team!
  • 20 0
I see videos of people on much bigger bikes making a big deal of the chunky parts on this loop - quite impressive she crushed the downhills on cross country bike.
  • 16 0
A very impressive ride! With a few miuntes of looking at Strave, I found a ride by Ben Sontagg in 2017 that did the Whole Enchilada from town, added in Jimmy Keen and all the way back to town in 6:16:48 (www.strava.com/activities/1297196944#3207606602Cool . Ben was an absolute beast!

2 liters of water?! I carry double that when shuttling it
  • 11 0
That's what stuck out for me too. Don't care if it's fall and cool, lack of humidity is death out there.
  • 15 0
Ripping downhill tech when you are totally knackered is terrifying....what a feat!

 ...while wearing XC gear. respect.
  • 12 0
Two liters of water!?!? Bad ass
  • 9 0
When I did The whole enchilada a few years ago.
It took me about 9 hours.
And I took the shuttle to the top!
Good for her. That’s amazing.

Good eye - I like that kind of stuff. She def rode it like a RACECAR

Badass. Glad they caught one technical section on film, but would have been cool to see the others. Logistics would be nuts though. But I'd take a "re-enactment, professional rider on a closed course, not actual FKT footage."
  • 7 0
Headline on the front page has the wrong time 6 hours 47 minutes, should be 5 hours 50 minutes or so.
  • 5 0
Man, that was rad. Great video, great effort. I've ridden that bottom section in Oct, needed 2 liters of water for probably 1/8 the distance.

"Something to be said for letting joy propel you." Rather liked that bit.
  • 6 0
Wow! She smashed it! 6hrs just to go down is fun. Up and down in that time sounds like death
  • 4 0
Exactly! I was told to to expect 8 hrs for descent by the locals before we headed up there...about right.
  • 11 4
I don't get it, I go way faster when I ride the shuttle up.
  • 3 0
 Ride smarter not harder
  • 4 1
did the "vegan enchilada" ride once, by the time I got to the top she would have been sipping champagne at the bottom for an hour. granted I stopped and smoked several spliffs on the way up.

Can an ebike do 8,000 feet of climbing with a fat american (not me, my friend) on it?

Is there any other kind of American on an EEB?

@DetroitCity: that Lane dude reminds me of the male Karen that told the adaptive MTBr that he isn't allowed on the trails LOL
  • 1 4
@formerbmxguy: how much money did he win?
  • 5 1
@DetroitCity: you should keep sharing this video. It's not stupid and pointless at all. Although it does check out, I lived in southern Michigan for a year and the trails were boring and chocked full of morons. The dude on the ebike is a jackass for ignoring the rules and the guy holding the camera is a useless a*shole for harassing him and calling ebikes motorcycles.

@formerbmxguy: That Lane guy is well known in Michigan. Complete asshat and an embarrassment to the MTB community. Glad he moved away from SE MI, all he ever did was start shit on the forums.

@dudegetabike: ya hes such a bad person. He said he was faster than everyone on a forum of fat old dudes. Who got butthurt, because they are fat old dudes.

He moved from Downtown Detroit with no trails, to Tucson Arizona in a house he paid 380k for in 2019 that is worth 1 million now. He know owns another house on 2 acres across the street from the Dragon Trail.

Hes such a bad person he spends all day riding his bike, and making fun of fat old dudes on forums.

Lock him up!

Thys whole situation reminds me of this guy that used to belong to our sail club. He would casually be a member until he got on the club board, then he would become a huge PITA and if people didn’t appease him he would try to find ways to expose us, either through the 503c or other means. Typically he was making things up but always ended up causing us some sort of trouble. He did this at three different clubs before clubs starting communicating and not allowing him to join, at which point he would then try to start trouble for other clubs. Some people just have to be part of the problem.

Pretty cool. Interesting to make this a press release. Every time I've asked folks to do this loop I get denied. People just don't see the point of it when you can so easily shuttle and make it fun rather than a sufferfest. Maybe I'll have more success when all these old dogs are on ebikes and have a full day at their disposal. Maybe I'll never get to do the loop. If I do I'll make sure to post up my time because STRAVA!!!!!

By the numbers, I do a similar loop in my area (50 miles and 8000') and was planning on doing this same loop when I go out to Utah someday.

The loop I am referring to out here is actually where Hannah does a lot of here winter training. Palm Canyon Epic in Palm Springs. She took my KOM on the climb a recently, and I am not motivated to try and take it back (out of shape).
