Just two years on from its inception, the Crankbrothers for Others initiative has raised over $45,000 for an array of cycle-centric charities and non-profit organizations around the world.

Highlights include over $7000 raised for World Bicycle Relief, $4000 for the Steve Peat Syndicate Scholarship Fund, and $2000 for the Ride for Michael Foundation. Other beneficiaries include the Stevie Smith Legacy Fund, Wheels 4 Life, Prochorus Community Development, Riding Forward, Team Rynkeby, I Ride for Paul, Little Bellas, Pablove Across America, CoppaRide, Griggs gOgirl Initiative, and Wings For Life.

From the Cape Epic in South Africa to the UCI Downhill World Championships at Val Di Sole, Italy, participating athletes have helped raise money for their charity of choice by sporting the Crankbrothers tattoo and engaging their fans through social media using the hashtag #cb4others.

World Bicycle Relief mobilizes people through the power of bicycles

“World Bicycle Relief is thrilled to be part of the #cb4others program,” said Katie Bolling, business development director, World Bicycle Relief. “Not only does it drive deep impact in our programs through fundraising, but it also drives an amazing amount of awareness through these athletes sharing their support for the Power of Bicycles at their races and events.”

“The #cb4others program gives me the unique opportunity to work with a brand I love while fundraising to support the next generation of female mountain bikers! I am so grateful to work with Crankbrothers because they are committed not only to helping their athletes succeed in the sport but to making positive change by promoting charities we care about,” said Kate Courtney, U23 XC US National Champion.

For 2017, Crankbrothers has announced additional charities and athletes to the program. Downhill up and comer Miranda Miller and enduro star Yoann Barelli join the existing roster of more than 50 athletes dedicated to giving back. A full list of participating athletes and charities is available at cb4others.com

“We founded Crankbrothers for Others to give back to the bike community in a meaningful way,” said Kellen Trachy, Global Marketing Manager, Crankbrothers. “The support from our athletes, fans, and the larger mountain bike community has been tremendous, far exceeding our expectations. We’re thrilled with what we’ve accomplished together in such a short time, and look forward to making an even bigger impact in 2017 and beyond.”

I just reviewed WBR and their financials and now I'm not too keen on them. They spend ALOT of money on fundraising (34% of their money in fact goes to "fundraising") yet 98.7% of their cashflow comes from donations OUTSIDE of fundraising. Their board of directors is a who's-who of global power. Peter O'Hagan is the devil himself. He orchestrated the Goldman Sachs debacle and the large handout from our government to allow GS to be a bank (meaning they can now create money). He currently works for the infamous Carlyle Group; killer of nations and makers of the finest ordinance the world has ever seen. It seems quite wrong to see such a man on the board for a large charity. His day job is killing people with efficiency (gov/military ordinance) and he moonlights as savior to Africans? Srsly?

Sadly this is seen a lot. Ina much less extreme example, Cadbury has a bikes for school kids in Africa program. They state the bikes are for school kids in Ghana. I've been to Ghana, many of the farms where Cadbury sources their cocoa from are utilizing child slave labour. Yet they put up nice displays in grocery stores that imply they are helping the kids of the exact country they harm. Don't look into Unicef, it'll ruin your day too.

Corporate social responsibility, sadly, is frequently a facade.

I've always thought it would be cool if you could buy one of the buffalo bikes that people in third world countries get through world bicycle relief. They could be a cool conversation starter, but the more of them that get sold, the lower the price per unit becomes, so eventually your dollar will go further through WBR. I would ride one around town for sure

If a charity is started every time a mountain biker gets injured or dies then in 10 years from now there will be so many charities that people will just ignore them all. Do you know how much of the money you donate actually goes to helping people? If I know someone personally and they die it affects me, if I never met them it doesn't. If a famous person dies does that mean more than a child who dies that you never hear about? Think about this before you act like sheep + jump on a bandwagon with everyone else.

No matter how many people complain about their pedals and wheels, they are able to raise money for a good cause. Keep it up!
