Paul Bas - This Is Not An Injury Update

Oct 18, 2015 at 11:37
by Danielle Baker

An elite level athlete, Paul Basagoitia is a member of our community who has reached all of our homes and hearts through his riding and charisma. Paul had a terrifying crash during his Finals run at Red Bull Rampage on Friday. When something of this magnitude happens to one of our own, our immediate reaction is to want information. At this time neither Paul or his family have released a statement with regard to his situation or prognosis.

We ask that you continue to send positive thoughts and energy Paul’s way. We are a global family and in times of crisis we need the support of our entire community.

How about you begin with finding out what he needs and then calling Redbull? It's easy to find a scape goat when sht goes down to feel a bit better about yourself. Just suck that feeling in and you may become a better person. Nothing personal to you, just a general trend that is quite messed up...

camzink: Everyone send Paul Basagoitia positive vibes! This champion has started a long road to recovery after shattering his T12 vertebrae yesterday and undergoing 9 hours of surgery. He had a winning run going and may have set the record for biggest step down just before going down. Lots of tears have been shed. Keep Paul in your prayers to regain feeling in his legs. There were some horrible people spreading false news that he was OK, but he needs your support more than ever to walk again. Paul, you are the most tenacious human and competitor ever. Love you bud! You'll be back! #f*ckrampage

all I know is he lost feeling in his legs and is slowly getting it back I hope its not serious because him and bizet really shined and showed us what rampage is about. heal up soon
  • 29 2
@peanutbuter how do you know he is slowly getting feeling back?
  • 45 10
#WAKIdesigns It should be helped by "the boss", by RB. Paul was making a living as others freeriders, all advertising for RB. Red Bull make much money with the videos ... and so on. And the riders receive a reward shit compared to the gain of RB.
  • 81 1
typically on a t12 vertebrate injury losing feeling is common, and can often be rehabilitated very slowly over time. However, in the instances where surgery is necessitated there's no telling what will be regained. Nerve damage is a big deal. We won't know for quite a while what will happen, but we can only hope that Paul receives the same stroke of luck that Aaron Chase did.
  • 8 7
that's what cam mccaul said @csermonet nobody really knows the full story at this point

This. Let's honor Bas & the positive intention of Danielle's post.
We can can lend real, meaningful help by:
1) reaching out to Red Bull & encouraging them to use all resources at their disposal to help Paul,
2) contributing on a grass roots level. Right now the request is moral support.
If the call for financial help comes, we can put our Paypal dollars where our mouths are then.
Bas wasn't just laying it on the line for RedBull, it was for every one of us who watched him ride. Let's keep it positive & constructive 'till we hear from the man himself. Negative hashtag campaigns are of zero benefit to anyone right now, but flooding Red Bull with positive "calls to action" might just provide Bas with help he critically needs.

What drugs are you on bro. The man needs help and redbull had something like this happen (not quite to the same scale) 2 years ago and did nothing
  • 16 3
I'm sure RedBull has all their legal bases covered for such an unfortunate tragedy. Athletes probably had to sign liability waivers & other documents that would absolve RedBull of any responsibility. That does not mean that they cannot do the morally responsible thing & help. Thoughts & hopes for a full recovery to this young man in what must be an absolutely terrifying time for him.

#irideforpaul
  • 65 5
The athletes do sign waivers/liability forms and as part of the FMB, they cannot compete without insurance. I don't get this trend of where people think an event's title sponsor should be responsible for insurance as that doesn't take place in any other sport that I'm aware of, but maybe its a sign to finally change the format of how Rampage is held. Maybe Rampage is not the kind of event that should be held in a 2 run format with production pressure on top of that. It would be awesome to see Red Bull step up with more money given to the riders (and in supporting Paul B) because of the risk and travel but lets face it, these guys are not competing for extrinsic rewards. Also without Red Bull, the Rampage would have never existed in the first place. They only provide a venue for these riders to push themselves and the sport- that's all.

I really hope Paul heals up. At the end of the day, no one gives a shit what we think. If there's a big problem, the riders will demand a change. We're all at best, partially informed.

 @tmanb3 legitimacy?

  • 5 4
I think it definitely comes down to the coverage that each rider has for insurance. I think Red Bull should definitely step up and provide any additional funds that may be incurred by a rider crashing in one of their events. It was terrible what happened to Sarah Burke and the resulting costs that were left for her family to pay when she passed. I don't think it is fair to judge Red Bull so hard at this point though as they are one of the main contributors for the entire sport of freeride and put together a pretty banging venue.
  • 31 2
I've seen a lot of people suggest that Redbull provide insurance for all of the riders. While that sounds nice I'm not sure that something like that is possible while keeping the event the way it is, with the riders having such freedom to do what they want to do. As soon as one party (wether it be Redbull itself or whatever insurance carrier) assumes complete responsibility for the entire event the door would be wide open for all types of new safety regulations/restrictions on what riders can do. I mean put yourself in the shoes of Redbull or the insurance company. Are they going to be ok with guys hucking themselves off 50ft cliffs? 80ft canyon gaps upside down? All while most guys are wearing minimal padding and body armor? The only way to allow these guys complete freedom to ride the lines they want too, the way they want too, is to have them be responsible for themselves. Otherwise you would have people from Redbull or some insurance company dictating what guys can and cannot do out there.
  • 7 1
@pipejumper I just want to point out that Sarah's accident is in no way relate-able to this situation.
  • 4 0
 @sino428 @scott-townes

The reason I'm pushing for RB directed insurance is that I know of at least one person still paying off medical bills because their 'travel insurance' sure wasn't going to cover something like Rampage. In terms of the insurance provided, each insurer has to be knowledgeable or informed of what is actually going on if they are going to insure a rider competing in a PROFESSIONAL competition. When you read fine print that changes everything. Personally I don't have a clue how riders actually afford to pay for insurance that covers them for something like Rampage.

There is 100K in prize money, maybe if some were directed to insurance the riders would be OK with it. Its a big gamble, if PB has a permanent spinal injury the expenses will almost certainly eclipse 500K, and multiple other injuries add to the bill. It's a big gamble for an insurance company to take.
  • 6 0
Best wishes and positive vibes to Paul!
  • 14 1
@kylemciver This discussion was already hatched at the last Rampage. You need to know as an athlete which kind of insurance is specifically needed and what hospitals are within your network, and even what procedures are covered and these claims have to be filed before you do anything. Welcome to the messed up system known as the US health "care" system. Once again, it was never and is never up to the title sponsor to provide insurance for the competitors... no matter how messed up the medical system is in the country where the event is taking place.
  • 4 1
@kylemciver - I know exactly what you are saying. It would be great if there guys could be protected more than they are. My only point is that the concept of Redbull just insuring everyone is not likely feasible for the reasons I mentioned. Perhaps along the lines of what you said Redbull maybe could pay all the riders a stipend toward their chosen insurance premium, just to help ensure all riders have adequate coverage for the risk they are taking. Other than that I don't see much other option while still keeping the contest as it is.
  • 28 1
@tmanb3 Thank you for your enthusiasm in creating that Go Fund Me campaign but Paul's family will be arranging their own fundraiser so we ask that everyone please donate to the official one. Thanks!
  • 3 3
@scott-townes How can her crash not relate to the topic of adequate insurance in extreme sports?
  • 6 1
Because it was her just ripping around doing a trick that wasn't high risk and not during a comp. It was a freak accident that could happen to literally anyone. It was an extremely horrible day and sad for so many I know including myself, but that has nothing to do with this discussion at all.
  • 4 3
@scottsecco When the family opens the fundraiser opens can we get an article link?

@scott-townes Insurance is pretty much mandatory for anything mountain bike. What I do appreciate is the swift response to the crash. Possibly a focus on more medical staff and faster response time would do more good than arguing about insurance... At the point of Paul, an American thing is to treat a seriously injured victim the second they roll in regardless of citizenship or insurance or consent "presuming" all are good to go. Insurance doesn't matter here at the point of even a mild concussion...
  • 16 4
In all reality Red Bull put this event on but we all watch this event for entertainment so aren't we all responsible to help contribute with the medical bills? To put it all on Red Bull is a bit ridiculous

Stay strong buddy! You where where well on your way to a winning run and you should stay positive! You have the entire Mountain bike community backing you! #irideforpaul

Redbull already massively fund Wings For Life a charity they helped setup after a friends son suffered a spinal injury leaving him tetraplegic. They pay for a team of research scientists and help fund spinal research all over the world.
If it is a spinal injury that Paul has then I hope to god it's an incomplete injury and he does regain movement again. You can guarantee that RedBull will do everything possible to help him and with their ties to Wings For Life then he couldn't be in better hands.
I know all this as I suffered a fall separating my spine at T12/L1 last year but sadly my injury was complete so has left me paralysed from the waist down.
  • 3 1
@shakeyakey Sorry to hear man. Was it on the bike?
  • 9 1
You know, these guys know what they're getting into. And personally, I don't believe redbull is responsible. I grew up in a country with basically free healthcare. And I'm not talking about bad healthcare either. Far better than in the US. I feel for the man and hope he gets all the treatment he needs, but the system is to blame really. Redbull is already doing amazing things like organising the rampage for our entertainment. Who else does that? I don't know any of the details, obviously, but if I were a pro rider of this caliber for any company I'd definitely want a contract that includes full medical insurance. No questions.
  • 1 0
Shite @shakeyakey, keep on keeping on, glad to see you are still engaged in the sport you love.

@scottsecco Too late for me, but I'm sure the donation can will get added to the family's fundraiser right @tmanb3?

As far as I know Red Bull contracts come with a full insurance package, no clue about any others.

From what I saw the medical care on site was superb for PB given the situation and a LifeFlight is about as much as anybody could ask for. Now Rogatkin on the otherhand was maybe not so cool or safe, but thats and event thing and it isn't the medics who control that.

@scott-townes Cheers for the details. I guess given that Red Bull is the leader in the entire side of non-mainstream sport (and some mainstream to boot) they are in a unique position. I'm certainly not trying to blame RB for any of this in the slightest, as you said it is just working within the constraints of the system. Since RB is such a massive company perhaps they could arrange an actuarial service to set up insurance for all of their events. The list includes tens of thousands of athletes at at least hundreds of events in tons of sports. Just speaking out loud.
  • 4 0
RC said it in an article not long ago. RedBull is one big accident away from being shut down, after seeing how things are going with this rider, this might've been the last Rampage. Hope all comes out well for the rider.

Latest from Tippie's instagram, sounds like Pauls got feeling down to his knees now. This is absolutely excellent f*cking news, and as swelling continues to go down he has a good chance of regaining feeling in the rest.  I think the riders (pre-qualified ones I suppose?) should get together with Red Bull and try and make negotiations for what they'll be getting from the event during the event planning phase. I think they would be able to bargain for a bit more than they're getting right now, although I have to wonder how much more that would be. Maybe it would be help with lodging for the riders/build crew, compensation (royalties?) from clips of the individual riders that get broadcasted, things like that.

I'm speculating here and while it might be an unpopular opinion, I can't see Red Bull paying the riders much more or paying everyone just for showing up. I'm not saying those things shouldn't change, I just don't think mountain biking is a big enough sport at the moment to make Red Bull feel it's worth it to spend the money.

I don't think Red Bull is making some monumental profit from the event, and if the riders decide it's not worth doing the event for the current prize money and amount of risk involved, then I think Red Bull is just going to stop putting on the event and focus their interests elsewhere. To be completely honest, I wouldn't be all that surprised if there isn't going to be Rampage next year.

Aside from all that, It's terrible to hear about riders getting badly injured. Hoping Paul has a full recovery.

  • 27 9
I'm sorry but if Paul or any other rider put his life on the line just for giving Redbull some exposure it's their own fault. Paul is not even sponsored by Redbull anymore. The competitors in Rampage do it simply because they love the sport ( at least that's what I choose to believe). Just look at Fest Series, where riders do stuff that is at least as dangerous as Rampage and they do not face any pressure from big brands. I agree though, that Redbull should give the riders some form of compensation in case of an injury. If you really want anyone to blame though, it should be the American health care system. That being said I wish Paul Bas, his friends and family all the best and a fast recovery from his injuries. Stay strong, give it time and you will be able to live trough this.
  • 23 9
How the f*ck does that make sense?

1: Paul probably didn't expect a wipe out
2: Who gives a shit about sponsors at this time.
3: People go to rampage to get the bills paid, too...
4: Fest is a jam, Rampage isn't. Danger on its own is fairy dust
5: You should't just get paid if you get f*cked up or podium...
6: The american healthcare system got him as far as a surgery, so far.

Either way,
Stay strong, Paul, Herb, Tyler, Antoine...
  • 15 6

@torero Our priorities are as listed:

1: Make sure to help Paul and everyone else is healthy and stoked.

2: Make reform at rampage. Everyone should have some reward for busting their balls in Utah for a week.

3: Consider options in better, cheaper healthcare if time is still present, 2nd to better treatment techniques.

Yup. I shattered T10 and T11 when I was 16. T9-T12 were fused in an 10 or 11 hour surgery. These injuries do take time though. I was off the bike for 8 months and wasn't pain free for nearly two years. Hopefully his recovery goes well and he comes back healthy. Shattering vertebrae is pretty scary. The X-rays are crazy to look at. Seeing bone fragments where vertebrae are supposed to be and all.
  • 4 0
yep, I shattered t4 t5 c6 and c7 and compression fractured 7 lower vertebrae, i had the shattered ones fused together, also got nerve damage in the right arm and upper chest, I was also partially paralised but when the swelling went down after a few weeks I could move again but was very weak, not a day goes by when I don't think how lucky I am not to be a paraplegic, i just hope paul B can pull through this like I did.
  • 114 24
All the best Paul! Nobody needs to know what happened, nobody should expect any info, any official statement. No injury updates needed. Everyone close to him will know, internet doesn't need to. Rampage is sketchy as hell and we all know that, it's not all Facebook like, appropriate content, sht happens and those guys are going bigger and bigger. I had second thoughts and quite a bit of embarrassment following Rampage. It's gladiating of the modern age, it would not be that popular if there wouldn't be a big chance of someone getting messed up. We love it because we like watching heroes cheating death, humans raising above what seems possible, but it can't be sustainable. I guess to a great point, those guys send it so big for that reason. How far can they go and still run away with it. No pointing fingers at anyone, please no hate towards Redbull or anyone, because we pump that sht and put pressure on those guys too. Heal up man. I just hope it's going to be as good as it can be.
  • 25 24
gladiating? come on waki, you really think WC DH is safe? The same thing might happen at every stop of the world cup. These guys are doing what they want, and injuries are part of the game.
That being said, injuries suck. And this kind of injury is the worst.

Oh, yes man! You are kinda reading my thoughts.
Controll free zones are what really attracts people: dead or alive you never know for sure.
It's like casino roulette or so - a passion.

But let's imagine it almost totaly safe. No injuries possible, just may be very small scratches. What's then?
And for some reason I beleive it would be not less fun, the same and more. And would give much more progress for the tricks, etc.

I have no clue about this, I will never reach the level that allows to ride rampage or to race WC. Same kind of injury can happen to anybody who crashes hard
(i.e barel was "lucky" in chile last year, taylor Vernon in val di sole etc).
But i'm not sure blaming rampage, or redbull or anything is going to help Paul to recover

oh and please race on wet root and rocks at WC speed. Tell me how more controllable it is compared to a rampage run
  • 1 0
 @zede
Looking to the terrible crashes that happens to TOP PRO riders, it is obviously you don't need any higher level: you will crash undependently of the level.
Sooner or later.

No need to blaming someone. We need constructive proposals to them to make all the event better and eliminate crashes.
  • 4 1
@zede just to be a completely anal nerd; Taylor Vernon broke his T7 at Crankworx Europe, not at Val Di Sole.
  • 8 5
The "totally safe" version of rampage is slopestyle. Groomed jumps, everyone hits the same thing. People get hurt (sometimes badly) but you're a lot less likely to see someone get dead. That's quite a bit safer than having guys try to out do each other by going bigger, and in many cases not having the time or support to build the landing they need.

@waki i've had the same thought a few times, and it's true of other extreme sports as well. When the only way to win is to go bigger, it becomes a question of what are we asking the top 5 riders in the world to do? It looked like the podium runs were hucking in the 80 foot range off that one big drop, pretty amazing to watch them stomp that. But then how big does Semenuk need to go to top that? 90 feet? 100 feet? At what point does someone have to try something thats actually impossible to do more than the last guy? We're not that far off from a point where guys are going to have to try some pretty suicidal lines to top the current leader.
  • 1 0
@willsoffe yeah you re right, I was confused with the video in val di sole where you can see him crashing and screaming because of back pain.
  • 1 0

Your response was entirely the opposite of what he said or suggested in spirit. Go outside and take a deep breath. Breath deep, in through your nose and out through your mouth. Do it deeply and focus. Let it calm you before wishing hate on a person thousands of km away who have never and will never meet. Put good stuff out there, you might some good stuff coming back.
  • 2 0
Definitely not a sustainable format, unfortunately. Luckily thing's have gone fairly well all things considered. Someone was going to get seriously injured at some point and it shouldn't be any sort of surprise but it's still awful and extremely unfortunate for Paul regardless.
  • 3 3
 @dcm6861 agreed
Rampage is like a bad joke which is repeated year after year. I don't know who is actually to blame for that: the company making tons of money by selling a really dangerous game, the riders accepting the rules of redbull in return for patting them on the back, the hypocritical spectators (most of them pinkbike users) seeking blood and then, when something bad happens (and always happens) writing about national health systems, money donations, good wishes....

What does it have to happen to change things? Maybe a death (God forbid)?
  • 63 0
If he has indeed shattered his t12 vert then he will be in spinal shock. The next 6-8 weeks will be crucial. He may not have sensation now but depending on the damage to the spinal cord it could well return...but his motor skills may not and visa versa. Im a t3 paraplegic ( no feeling and little control from chest down ) from a cycling accident. rest, rest and rest then concentrate on trying to stay positive and calm. Take one day at a time and heal slow but well...thoughts are with him and his family.

How did this come to be ??? It is not Red Bull's fault.... The riders shouldn't be bitching either. I love how Red Bull puts on a lot of these events..

but here is the problem.... Progression.....I remember a really good rider telling me he is quiting. He said he was quiting because if you hit a 4 foot drop then you hit a 6 foot drop then a 10 foot drop, then you have to hit a 16 foot drop...but that isn't good enough you need to go bigger.....so that was one part of it, but then he said...kids are going to do 360's and flips soon....I don't want to be any part of that....because If you do a back flip on 4 feet....you will have to go bigger....think about a back flip over a 60 foot double??? let that sit in for a moment....

How about this ?? Cam you have always been nice to me, but here me out.

Cam Zink calling out Rampage and f*ck rampage...well then don't be a hypercrite because you sponsored the YT jump. Should we have #f*ckYTbikes ??? Are you calling for boycott....because then YT bikes should be boycotted too.. Can't have it both ways.

The Red Bull event is awesome. I love camping out there. Riding with people and watching the event. Like many, sometimes the judging doesn't seem right. . 2008 ??? When they started putting in ramps ...I started saying "I hope no one kills themselves" because the risk is there.....

Bottom line....Red Bull is not alone. Crankworks or any other event guys can get hurt bad or killed. The riders themselves have to decide what risks to take. It is not Red Bulls fault for putting on the event...The fault can just be blamed on progression....

Totally agree with you there. But I do think RedBull should make proper protection mandatory... It gives me shivers to watch most of the guys fly down that mountain in just a T-shirt and a Fullface, I mean Come on that's just crazy. Do hope that redbull steps up and at least pays for the hospital bill and rehabilitation. Hope you get well soon Paul and be able to ride again. Best wishes to you, your family and friends.
  • 4 0
should all riders be required to wear body armour...I wear it all the time but my friends don't wear it......how does Red Bull get them to wear armour and such.... insurance companies would dictate how big jumps would be and such...about 10 years ago Ashland was going to stage a free ride event in a gravel pit area....they had all the insurance and stuff in place....well the insurance agent wanted to look at the event....as soon as he saw it...they cancelled the insurance...no way would they insure the event with that many risks
  • 1 0
Its not their fault, but with the exposure that this event gives red bull, the minimum they could do is pay for the bills, sponsored or not.
  • 2 1
Armour needs to be mandatory for these events, given the amount of crashes and the risk these guys are taking. It's not a 10' jump anymore like the old days. Plus it sets a better example for the younger kids these days. I'm always impressed to see the riders wear atleast hard chest protectors and neck braces like Lacondeguy. I watch the city DH races...someone is gonna kill themselves on those races too. Also in my opinion who ever sponsors the rider should be looking after them, not necessarily the event sponsor, however redbull is such a huge promoter of extreme sports I'm sure they would provide some sort of support. Best wishes to Paul, Tom and all the riders who were injured. Wishing you all speedy recoveries.

When i read about this earlier today all i could think about is the dark sorrow this brings. Paul is an incredible rider and i am sure an incredible man as well. Some might say this is the nature of the sport we love but this should never be the result. I truly wish and pray that Paul gets through this and is back on his bike flying through the wind enjoying the life a bike should bring, not this deep dark miseray it can cause in a life in the blink of an eye #prayforpaul

Keep cool Bas!!!! Take it easy mang healing vibes your way.
  • 12 2
Pauls gofundme page has had his crash video removed by Redbull due to copyright infringement - nice way to profit from other peoples injuries - stay classy Redbull corporate assholes.
  • 14 2
It's also just insensitive to post the crash up at this point.

@WAKIdesigns but you admitted yourself it’s been a wake-up call. Let’s not turn this into anything other than a place to congregate and send some positivity over Paul Bas’ way.

It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt, now everyone is looking for an escape goat. Its kinda funny how all the Cheeto eating experts are jumping off the Red Bull band wagon. Imagine an extreme sport without Red Bull and the likes, we would still be waiting around all year for the X-Games. You would think most of these athletes would already have insurance for an event such as this considering most of them have competed in Joy Ride and the multiple other events throughout the year. #rideforpaul
  • 8 0
How did this come to be ??? It is not Red Bull's fault.... The riders shouldn't be bitching either. I love how Red Bull puts on a lot of these events..

but here is the problem.... Progression.....I remember a really good rider telling me he is quiting. He said he was quiting because if you hit a 4 foot drop then you hit a 6 foot drop then a 10 foot drop, then you have to hit a 16 foot drop...but that isn't good enough you need to go bigger.....so that was one part of it, but then he said...kids are going to do 360's and flips soon. (he quit the sport in 2002 when nobody was doing flips and whatnot)...I don't want to be any part of that....because If you do a back flip on 4 feet....you will have to go bigger....think about a back flip over a 60 foot double??? let that sit in for a moment....

Just thinking here, sorry if this may not be the most appropriate place to post it. Many riders are saying they want change in Rampage, and how prize money, insurance, etc, is handled. Wouldn't the best way to send a message to RedBull be just not showing up? If Semenuk, Lacondeguy, Zink, Sorge and all the other big guys didn't show under the premise of shitty working conditions, I think that would force a change. Or maybe Rampage is like MTB's Group B, cool and all until people start dying, then it dies
  • 3 0
This is exactly what I think. I doubt redbull will make a change to it unless the big guys threaten to not show up
  • 13 6
Cam Zink and Deity said it best, #f*ckrampage. The whole format of rampage needs to be re-evaluated. it could take a hit from fest, which is more rider organized and pretty much a jam session. The bike industry needs to start caring more about the riders, not the products
  • 7 1
Unfortunately I don't think redbull will change anything about about rampage unless all of the best riders in rampage stage a boycott and agree to not participate and I don't see that happening.
  • 4 0
Maybe this will be the catalyst? If even half of the top riders demanded changes, I'm sure Red Bull would listen.

Rampage needs the riders a LOT more than the riders need Rampage.
  • 6 1
Or they could just not do it. No guns to anybody's heads. This is devastating and emotional but I saw it coming a few years ago. Hitting 70 foot jumps on mountain bikes is dangerous. This is not Redbull's fault, there is no need for a #f*ckrampage attitude. Emotions should be directed toward Paul and his recovery. Healing vibes. Positive vibes.
  • 4 1
If all best riders unite and boycott not to participate, the second best riders will be there to take the sponsorship the best riders just lost, that new sponsorship will make them just as good in a matter of months. Being related to a professional extreme sports athlete I can tell you that their way of life is worth the risk they are taking and they know it and most importantly they love it. Why is that? I don't know, what I can tell you is his parent's response "if he dies, he will die doing what he loves, which is ok"
They will never unite to boycott.
  • 2 0
I agree it won't happen. At least not for a very long time. Even if the second best riders step up which I agree they would in that situation I still think red Bull would remake policies. Rampage would lose so many viewers if the big guys weren't there
  • 1 0
It would be nice if they remake policies, but leveraging RedBull to do something is kinda hard though, I just looked up RedBull alone annual revenue, 5.5 Billion Euros. The Non-transportation cycling Industry is 6 Billion Dollars. RedBull alone is bigger than entertainment Cycling from a business perspective, A couple dosen MTB riders trying to backleverage RedBull will not even tickle them. No hate comments here, i just really enjoy looking at cycling from a business perspective, it is always a very humbling experience for me, everytime. It reminds me that it is just a hobby.

Heal up man, I hope you recover well from this crash, we are with you! Not that I have ever met you or know the first thing about you personally but simply because of the sport and passion we (and many others that come here who are probably thinking the same) share and because of that I understand your feelings (granted only to a small extent), I genuinely wish you a full recovery and that you are alright. You can do it man!

I often write a message on social media or Pinikbike when a mountain bikers is injured as I imagine that you are sitting in your hospital bed recovering and not in the best mood, and I hope that these kind of messages help, to know that even random people on the other side of the world are behind you and wishing you the best. You can do it man! Good luck!

You can't blame Rampage or Red Bull. Sheer bad luck. Look at the Nicholai crash, gets up and walks away. These riders are like all of us, just trying to one up each other. But their one upping is crazy as hell!!!! Healing vibes

a company the size and magnitude of redbull should be pulling out all the best medical help as this moment in time for such a legend as paul he has done a massive amount of work in his life and at times like this he should be getting the best help he can get at this moment in time, my heart and feelings go out to paul at this time and hope he gets well soon, deepest regards to all his family as well
  • 3 0
I rescind my earlier comments from another article. Classy and timely response from Pinkbike. Healing vibes to Paul, this is an incredibly serious injury but all hope is certainly not lost. Thoughts out to him and his family, they've got a very tough time ahead.

Too much negativity here. Everyone should be thinking about Paul Bas here, not about your hate for Redbull, the event, or each other. Praying for you Paul Bas, thanks for being a inspiration.

 sending 100% of positive thoughts

If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell. ~Lance Armstrong
  • 4 1
I think what people in here forget about in their comments is that we all are a part of the problem. Why? Think about it… the whole sport is more or less an entertainment industry and the topic is “faster, higher, further…”. If an event series like the Rampage won’t progress from event to event or from year to year the media consumers would get bored. Be honest… why everybody is switching on the live stream? We want to see something new, something exciting, something we have never seen before… so the request “faster, higher, further…” comes from us and the entertainment industry does for sure the best to deliver to get as many views as they can…

There is the chance to pay back for this and help on www.gofundme.com/supportforPaulB
Take the chance.

P.S.: For all those Blame Red Bull and give advices of whet they should do… I am confident, that Red Bull helps with whatever they can behind the scenes and if they are not doing right now I am sure they will.

I remember Your segment in Your first NWD, Paul, I remember thinking "holy cow, this guy is the future". I both liked and hated You, because You were so cool but also way cooler than my reigning idols.

What are the odds, that Your segment in a niche action sports movie will influence some teenagers' decisions somewhere in a tiny mountainless land across the ocean? Well, You beat those odds, Paul. You can beat these odds too. Estoninan MTB community 100% with You.

Hopeing you heal up soon and if not I know you're the badass who'll fight every day to get where you want to be. I'm sending a bunch of healing vibes and can't wait to see what you do next. Glad to hear so many people are using this as just that extra little motivation to get on the bike, because that's what it's all about.
  • 2 0
God Bless you Paul . i really love all the times you shared with us while NWD held the world in its hands .... you are one of my all time favourite FreeRiders ! loved growing up watching you ride with kona . and Rampage's over the years ! ... i pray for you & the family . take care bud get well soon.
  • 4 2
That sucks. Healin vibes to Bas. But first blame yourself not Redbull..... we want to see this gnarly shit live and for free...so it s up to us who are pushing the riders to give us the show... And it can happen to everyone who rides bike even on a silly crash on your local trail...its not red bulls fault.... And yes i have to care about my insurance for my self...

Prayers for Paul and his family. One the issue of Redbull helping with hospital bills and/or insurance costs; It may be time riders band together and bargain collectively. We see this in NFL, NHL, NBA, Tennis etc. I am usually not a pro-union guy but I think it is time for professional riders to form some type of riders association or union.

We see similar problems in road cycling when for example the Tour of Quartar is 45 degrees C and the riders wish to stop for health and safety and organizers try to force them to ride on. I am not sure about all the legal aspects but definitely something to be considered.
  • 2 0
Don't forget we support this event. Maybe if we didn't watch.. maybe if the 100Kish pinkbike users didn't watch, maybe we have the power? f*ck Rampage but think about it. ad money comes from us. If we want change, if we want to see more edits, progression, and athlete safety.. f*ck rampage and don't support shitting judging and shit insurance. Props to Paul for chasing a dream. f*ck us for thinking this is the pinnacle event.

#IrideForPaul sad to hear you suffer a real injury. Especially this times will form you and show you who is your friend. I am sure you will find good and careing people around you. You have always me wanna go ride and I truely need to thank you for that. My son was crying when he saw your crash. as his tears are dried now, your tears and blood will keep going during a long process of recovery. All I can do is to wish you the best for the future and do not look back in anger.
You were riding on the edge and you did inspire millions of people. Not many can say such things about themself.

I ride for you!
stay strong and positive!

I do not like to say this. but the sponsors are the problem in the competetive circous......too much pressur on the ridres.....why they let Nicoli go down the hill after the crash...why they count down on the riders -> you need to go know, f**k this are risking their life, not the manager up on top of a company.....Why they don´t let them go on the sec run 4 hours later or let the riders decide when they like to go.....because of the freakin´money that´s behind.....making money out of a lifestyle for 4-5 years by now....thank u industry......go fest series....

I´m really sorry for Paul.....I hope u recover fast man.....ride on Paul

RedBull u need to get the freakin best doctors in the world to fix the problems u cause on the most different kind of extrem sports, this is my opinion...
  • 4 2
@torbenrider everyone is hating on Red Bull when we are the ones that are supporting the event by watching it. All the riders know the risks going in, they all sign waivers and no one is forcing them to ride. We all want these guys to go bigger so if everyone has issues with Red Bull then stop watching the event and supporting it. That being said I hope Paul makes a full recovery and that he gets the help he needs.
  • 1 0
Does Redbull have empathy or not? I know its not their obligation to pay shit but in my head they should
  • 1 0
@cheeverbrent : My point is not going straight on RedBull, it is more about a lifestyle is being market......I know about signing waivers and wearing less protective gear.....It was more on, what different stages mtb beeing market over the last 10 years.....what it was what it is
  • 1 0
 keep strong Paul BAS!! #rideforpaul
I mean to be honest, you're the one with Bizet and Zink that have blown my mind during this , let's say it, weird rampage. Man I stand up when he throw his run and sent that horrendous drop... That was truly mind blowing.
Get well soon Buddy, you're run was the definition of Gnar!
  • 2 1
All the best to you, Mr. Bas. You've always been an inspiration to me, and I still love watching your good ol' NWD segments. We stand and we won't fall, We're one and one for all, The writing's on the wall, We are the youth gone wild!

Would it not be safer to have nets on the edge of those ledges? He was a foot away from tumbling down a 20 foot drop after he spilled, if he'd have done so he'd have been toast.

NWD 10 segment is still one of the best segments of ALL time, such a stylish and calculated rider, from a kid who grew up watching that segment nearly every day it really shows Pauls longevity and commitment I the sport, mtb needs you back! heal up Paul, the next laps for you

With your life on the line Rampage is not all fun & games some serious measures go into making Mountain Biking the highly evolved intense sport it is today people like Paul have help in more ways then words can truly express . get well soon .

Hopefully Red Bull can show support but either way, get well soon Paul. You've inspired so many riders with your riding and have had an enormous impact on the mountain bike community!
  • 1 0
In the past I have enjoyed watching Rampage and at the end of it I let out a sigh of relief that no one got seriously injured.....unfortunately this was not the case this year. Wishing and hoping you make a full recovery Paul. #irideforpaul
  • 1 0
Paul Bas has always been a sick rider. His NWD edits speak for themselves. If anyone can bounce back from this its Paul! Red Bull should help out anyway they can. Not that they are obligated too, but because it's the right thing to do. They have the money that's for sure. #rideforpaul!
  • 2 1
We're also really lucky Rogatkin didn't get killed. If someone who doesn't wear protection like Godzyek makes that fall and we may have had another seriously tragic injury. Luckily Rogatkin was fine and we just get to talk about what kind of a soldier he is.
  • 1 0
Well, very bad that happened to Basagoitia... But I started to think mountainbiking has become a little more dangerous... Months ago a competitor has died on a EWS in Crested Butte (and years ago what happened to Tara Llanes and Tarek Rasuoli), now this, whats next? Hope to no one will continue this circle of (tragical) events but maybe knee pads and neck braces "are not enough"...
  • 2 0
Hoping with everything I've got you make a full recovery. And for what it's worth, thank you for throwing it down like a true legend, it was an all-time run and breathtaking to watch.
  • 1 0
Paul, incredible courage you have for doing what you did at rampage. No one can ever question the type of rider you truly are. Which is a rider who truly loves the world of mountain biking. I wish you a speedy recovery. Don't ever give up, stay strong and know that we love ya bro!!!
  • 1 0
What happened to Paul last Friday is the reality that I'm sure is in the back of each riders mind in some form they try to push away. I can relate to Zink's post with clear frustrated tones, being a parent changes things and seeing that happen to a friend is harder than any line. I feel so bad for Paul and his family during these times. Heel up fast and strong Paul! There is a community waiting to lift you up.
  • 1 0
This is truly shit news .Life can be impossibly unfair . Trying to do your best should not carry such a high price , but when doing your best means you must challenge and at times defy gravity. Then we / you must all prepare for its crushing and devastating consequences . Stay strong Paul and never give up sir !
  • 2 0
Wish you all the best, Paul!!

And guys, don't blame RB for it. Everyone decides on his own what to do and what not to do.
95% of the riders did make it to the bottom. It's a risky sport, that's all to it...
  • 3 2
This is not an injury update...
Send him some positive thoughts, but thoughts won't pay bills. Maybe it is time to send him some $. I mean 5 $ won't hurt anybody who is riding a 2000$+ Bike. Waiting for Red Bull to help him won't help him. We all wanted to see a grat rampage an he rode a massive line, maybe the community should take care of their heros. So somebody give me his bank account please.
  • 1 0
Paul I'm sat at home with a fractured t12 and had surgery to put in rods after a car crash,6 months off work and I don't know how long off my bike,I'm in a fortunate position to be able to move my legs and walk around,it took me a few weeks but I'm there now, stay strong and do what the professionals tell you to. heal up fast!!
  • 1 0
At the very least, Red Bull could pay the athletes for the time and money they spent going, as well as offering health coverage for the riders. They make enough money off the promotion of the event to cover the athletes for the few days they are there.
  • 1 0
Deeply sadened by the news yesterday... Paul Bas is and will always be a massive part of this sport, and I can't believe he went down so hard. So, if there is any chance you can read our messages, Paul, be sure I will keep you in my prayers. I wish you a speedy recovery, and know that you will be strong enough to fight, each and every day ! Bless you !

Moto has been talking about this issue for years.. Someone from the top of the riders group (a legend) needs to lead and form a riders union so the riders have a unified voice. Easier said than done- obviously

Get well soon.
  • 1 0
oh shit, first thing that I thought after a crash was "f**ck, he broke his back" And it came true...unfortunatly. This run was a winnig run for sure, another masterpiece from a great athlete. Hope to get well soon, it's more shred to come Paul. Greetings from Poland!
  • 1 0
Every one slating Red Bull l saying the jumps are to big it's all there fault etc. No I don't think so if any thing the jumps are not big enough! If he actually hit a decent size jump he wouldn't needed to overshoot to try and show off for the camera. Or he could of ease done a trick to style it up instead of doing a straight air dead sailor. Anyway who needs to walk when red bull gives you wings
  • 1 0
Best wishes to Paul. I think we respect the high standards that the elite riders set themselves and the camera doesn't need to be rolling for them to push their performance to the very limit. We've had a series of high profile injuries over in the UK and I 'm always personally gutted when I read of or see an accident like this. I think its dangerous to accept injuries in this way as normal and those surrounding the sport can do more to safeguard against injuries like this. Given the level of expenditure being thrown around by Red Bull - I can't see why some sort of safety support could be provided. No one is going to begrudge if a rider lands on a crash mat if they've just fallen off a cliff. It's a pretty shambolic approach by the organisers I feel.
  • 1 0
@Paul B. What a sick crash. You can be happy that the platform stopped your falling ... shocked watching the video i saw that this could have ended even deeper. I'm sure you find a way through that shit. Keep on ! Best wishes for your Reha !
  • 1 0
We enjoyed it when Paul payed us a visit for NWD 7 (IIRC). We hope to meet him here again, with his bike. Smile

With that said, I decided to look up "red bull rampage rewards", just to find out a competitor blog put up a well written opinion on the matter. The rewards vs risk is extremely ridiculous. Any sane person would see that immediately. Just an example (quote): "In 2014 Kyle Strait was awarded $4,000 for his 4th place result, leaving just $1,000 take home after his expenses for two weeks in the desert. At an hourly rate that's probably worse than minimum wage."

In conclusion, most riders probably have a day job regardless of sponsorship and Rampage is just an odd job, especially for expert bikers like Zink, Strait etc'. From another perspective, this event is prestigious and a great addition to a professional biker's resume, some riders like Strait basically make it their trade mark. That one event they are extremely known for, and therefore participating ever again to preserve their spotlight, regardless of reward size.

To sum it up, I think RB should stop messing around and increase rewards to make it worthy of these rider's lives. 1st place should walk away with $250K MINIMUM. It's negligible to the many millions RB makes from marketing the event.

Paul's back is broken, 9hr surgery they took a rib out to make a piece for his spine. He is somewhat feeling his legs again from what I was told today. Redbull lies to make there money. Redbull rampage is a joke they didn't care about a bunch of riders this year. I love building at rampage but this year it was wives of crank work. Whining f*ck in bitches. WE'RE NOT FUKEN SORRY (for the ones who know what this means (bs crys))
  • 1 1
Red bull makes money of these riders i think its time they own up! they should pay for their medical bills when they get injured, even if they never return to the sport. You ask me to do crazy stuff and push the sport its not much to ask you to have my back when i'm down, as a rider i don't want to support a company that can't help its athletes, and no one should. On a side note, I think Paul's run was Unbelievable and he would have won.
  • 3 0
Paul, I'm praying for you and hope to see you on the trails shredding again soon!

His run was absolutely mental, I couldn't believe the speed and intensity! Hope he heals 100% and returns stronger than ever.

Prayers have nothing to do with this. Modern medecin does. Stop disrespecting the people that actually make a difference. Stop giving credit to some higher being. People that care make a difference not your God

broke one of his vertebrae (t17 i think) and he might not ever walk again as he is currently in paralysis.
  • 9 0
 cam zink twitter:

Everyone send Paul Basagoitia positive vibes! ‪#‎f*ckrampage‬

  • 9 2
Zink is probably pissed that he had a podium run and got little credit for it. I don't blame him.
