Red Bull Rampage 2014: Looking at 34 Bikes

RED BULL

THE BIKES OF RAMPAGE

RAMPAGE

It is as simple as this, without the bikes we would not have Red Bull Rampage. They are an integral piece of the puzzle. They are the tools that have evolved along with the athletes, and our sport, to make it what it is today; an extravaganza of amazing feats and style dropped into a barren Utah canyon.

Sterling Lorence tracked down the riders and their steeds over the last two days onsite. Some were shot in the morning light when energy is high and smiles are easy, others were taken in the midday heat, while riders took breaks and tried to hide in the shade. Today, with qualifiers happening, the bikes have brought the energy in the whole canyon back up to an exciting level as we all anticipate the show we are about to see.

Unreal. I can't believe they do this.
  • + 30
fuck yeah godziek, rock that x7 rear derailleur!! respect bro
  • + 7
Does semenuk make them take his picture in the same place every year?
  • + 4
 McGazza did it first
  • + 4
Yah he went to the old site to take his pic
  • + 5
Semenuk be like “ Hurry up and take the damn picture"
  • + 6
Norbs photo is awesome! great light, why do i want to believe he had something to do with the photo setup.
  • + 4
...and the bike with the sickest paint job goes to.....Tom Vansteenbergen'sTrek. me wantz
  • + 3
I really wann see the godzieks freakin basterd on rampage, he is sick Smile
pozdro ziom

Makes you wonder how crazy this will get in the years to come. 5 years time? double back flips 100ft canyon.....haha

I want to be invisible like howey.

no giant bikes ? what a surprise .... they will always be the bikes of 29er and mugs riding there mountain bikes to work lol. as they sponsor nobody decent
  • + 10
^^^So you're saying Sorge is not decent.....you sir are a douche!!!
  • + 2
Danny Hart is pretty handy too. I think we all remember the 2011 Champery world champs.
  • + 1
I was gonna mention him and the guy that's so strong in the world city downhill races....Gutierrez I think.
  • + 97
Looking at McGarry's bike, is like looking at pictures of Miley Cyrus before she went crazy...
  • + 10
 hahhaa lmao!
  • + 6
The question is: Will it blend?
  • + 3
 I think it already did!
  • + 58
Why aren't people running chain guides anymore? I mean, I'm sure clutch derailleurs are really good and all but I wouldn't trust an entire rampage run on it.
  • + 68
 Neko... Mulally!
  • + 14
I'm very surprised some are not running guides , imagine coming up to a jump and going to put the gas down and there is nothing there cos the chains off , fuck that. Infact I assumed they all did run guides and didn't notice that some didn't
  • + 11
Was thinkin the same..would hate to see someone dorp in an have to back off cause there chain fell off! Even tho theres not much pedalin ? Lppks like YT an TREK are dominating! YT for the whole podium haha!
  • + 29
 narrow wide chainrings
  • + 2
haven't seen any recent bikes on the last year? haha narrow wide, technologie used on the xx1 1x11 drivetrains...im also using it on my dh rig but I do have a chain guide... although im using no chainguide on my xx1 on my new nomad...0 issues till now Big Grin
  • + 1
Neko broke a chain, not a guide...
  • + 12
Risk vs. Reward man... what is a few grams to have an upper guide. I mean, I get the premise behind narrow/wide + clutch derailleur but a guide is just cheap insurance.
  • + 4
And a skid goes a long way too
  • + 40
If Lacondeguy and Aggy can both do a 76foot drop into the dust without chainguide and problems, I think we don't have to be afraid about that new "technologies". Smile
  • + 3
@simcik But it's easier to lose the chain and throw down a sick run Wink
  • + 19
Kelly's chain was stayed on.... even when his wheels blew
  • + 4
It's a testament to the quality. I cased a 30ft double on my trail bike at the loc spot (cracked rim, no mcgarry, but still) and my chain didn't come off my 32t chainring
  • + 2
haha I was going to post that to see if anyone else found that strange. the future is awesome.
  • + 1
 And that's what's up
  • + 4
The point i'm trying to get at is that there is still the chance , remote chance maybe but still a chance the chain will not be there when you need it , with all the dangers present I would not add one that could be avoided.

Though as Voxran says they are the ones running the kit and wouldn't bring some thing they don't have faith in ( or they are being paid a little extra to show how great this narrow wide/clutch combo is to boost sales ).

Some don't even have a bash guard/plate/slider thing , that's pretty committed to...
  • + 10
34 bikes that'll change our sport sunday
  • + 5
Sram's 'X-Sync' chain, chainring, cassette and derailleur (its got special jockey wheels) combo is actually pretty damn amazing. Zink ran his bike last year without a guide and if these guys are putting everything on the line, says a lot about the equipment they're using. In the woods with stumps and the like, some bash protection would be preferable, but if anyone knows the product demands of an event like this, its these guys.
  • + 2
@Kleinblake Kelly run a Shimano drive-train. So he has a complete chain-guide. Look at the photos correctly!
  • + 0
if the chain comes off or stays on, it still makes the bikes look prime
  • + 1
I have yet to drop a chain with my 1x10 setup sans guide. I even snapped a stay this season without losing it. That's good enough for me, although I'm still not sure I'd chance it in an event like this.
  • - 22
flag laynehip (Sep 26, 2014 at 13:19) (Below Threshold)
Regardless of if it works or not, chain guides look so much better. Having no guide at all just looks super weird and gross.
  • + 4
I suppose my only question is why not? A dropped chain, however unlikely, would still be such a let down after months if not years of preparation. They must be pretty confident in their gear.
  • + 3
Even with a guide, Danny Hart lost his chain.... in a race run.
  • + 4
So far in the last few world cups, there's been more chain guide malfunctions than dropped chains.. Maybe they're safer without them now? Narrow Wide really is pretty damned reliable
  • + 5
These guys are obviously comfortable with it. They would know after all.
  • + 2
I really wanna say it's just marketing by SRAM (damn good marketing at that) but none of these guys would be willing to risk losing a rampage run due to a dropped chain. I'm sure SRAM pushed them to do it, but obviously they are all comfortable with it.
  • + 3
Thats a big trust in X-sinc. All enduro pros and even lot of XC racers use a top chain guides...
  • + 3
I could count 22 bikes with some kind of chain guide.
  • + 2
The chain isn't going to come off if you don't pedal
  • + 0
I would assume that their sponsors (primarily SRAM) are somewhat forcing them to ride with no chainguide to promote the reliability of the N/W + Clutch Mech combo
  • + 2
It's an interesting point. Approx a third of the bikes appear to have no chain guide - which is a lot. I've been running a 32t narrow wide ring all season for dh with just a top guide - not a single chain dropped.
  • + 2
If you look close, all of the guys without guides are riding SRAM drivetrains. It's not just the narrow-wide and the clutch that makes for the security but also the parallel motion of the new rear derailleurs. Without that, I wouldn't trust it either, but it seems to work as an overall package.
  • + 1
Not Carson Storch and Mitch Chubey
  • + 1
@kleinblake... guess I should have said most.
  • + 1
 i saw 23 chain guides.
  • + 49
Soooo... if you don't have a Chromag saddle can you still hang out with the cool kids?
  • + 8
I can't believe the cool kids run cromag saddles. I know it's size helps with getting around it and doing seat grabs, but still. That thing is hideous
  • + 5
@kleinblake chromag overtures are the sickest saddle out there
  • + 2
couple lynx's on those bikes too.
  • + 1
definitely love the chromag seat gang but you've got to be kidding me those little things are retarded on a big bike
  • + 30
so since when is banshee darkside called a morpheus?? good to see many YT bikes under pros
  • + 98
Will White and Mitch Chubey ride for Morpheus but we did not have bikes ready in time from Rampage so we gave them the opportunity to ride whatever they wanted to make sure they are safe for the event.
  • + 11
 good on you guys!
  • + 9
 Wise move @Morpheus-Cycles
  • + 22
I think you guys will be very please with what is coming next. It will be a departure from the proto you have seen kicking around this past year or so.
  • + 34
Love when companies give a good honest response!
  • + 3
fair enough. appreciate the honest response.
  • + 6
solid move, morpheus. now if only you hadn't gotten yourself caught by agent smith and made me come in and rescue your ass...
  • + 13
Thanks @Morpheus-Cycles to picking up Wil White! The kid deserved it
  • + 23
glad to see Wil White with a new rig the guy has deserved it
  • + 4
Ya looks like a banshee(on my phone) good on him. Darkside is awesome
  • + 2
And Spinergy wheels....interesting that they are up for the punishment of Rampage....a little surprise.
  • + 21
 No 29ers?
  • + 12
I think Ropelato should do it on the enduro 29er!!
  • + 14
 Ropelato clipped in! FTW
  • + 1
Yup, I saw that. Mental. I cannot think of any logical reason to be clipped in at rampage!
  • + 1
I prefer to be clipped in when going for big drops so I don't blow my pedals or sprain my ankles. Sketchy goat paths next to sheer cliffs, or doubles in windy conditions? Not so much. What pedals are they I can't tell?
  • + 1
 Mallets DH
  • + 1
Cheers I thought so but couldn't see the eggbeater in the pic and my Mallet1 look different.

ROCK SHOX gets my vote. Stick your Fox where the sun don't shine with its overpriced rebuild parts and snobby customer service. ROCK SHOX FOR LIFE. (ON THE FRONT OHLINS FOR THE REAR)

  • + 5
Yeah, those silver forks are X-Fusion.
  • + 2
i saw one suntour rux and three x-fusion rv1's
  • + 2
surprising number of air shocks too
  • + 3
"... and there snobby customer service." True that.
  • + 3
 p-dub-4
FUX charged me for service parts, back ordered them after telling me they were in stock. After six months I asked for a refund and they refused. In my experience FUX has the poorest customer service and want to charge $150 for a few O-rings and a few oz"s of oil. What a joke.
  • + 2
I've had similar issues as well. Unfortunately.
  • + 12
My favorite is the morpheous darkside....
  • + 8
Looks like Brendan Fairclough is running 26" wheels using FR600's instead of his usual 650b FR Gravity's. There is also plenty of space under that fork arch. Hater explosion imminent.
  • + 1
With 3 destroyed rims so far, I've been wondering why most of them are running alu rims. Isn't carbon supposed to be so much better in every aspect? Honest question.
  • + 1
I don't think it would matter what rims were being run out there they would more than likely get destroyed. Now the riders have had a "free reign" around the new site we've seen just what goes through their heads when given a blackish canvas and space to build. So many heavy hits in runs something is going to give up somewhere along the way. More often than not rims first as Kelly and Makken can testify to.
  • + 1
I'd say alu would be a better choice. Due to carbons failure type I'd sooner have a rim that can flex rather shatter.....
  • + 3
@nojzilla That's my logic behind getting alu on certain components but the industry has been claiming that the failure point of carbon parts is usually much much much higher than alu so if your carbon rims shatter, your alu rims would have exploded into infinity long before that point so you might as well go for carbon... Which is why I'm asking. This looks like the perfect application for carbon yet almost everybody runs alu.
  • + 1
Hmm it's a tough one.. I'd say in certain applications these claims are true, like a frame for example. Where the shape an design can be used to a high level to fully take advantage of carbons strength. But a rim... It has a limit to its desighn to function properly. Also factor in tyres flatting out on harsh rocks. An ally rim could dent an stay true an hold its structure as a wheel, where'as the carbon If it shatters... The whole wheel fails Guessing thats the last thing these boys want on harsh landings halfway down a cliff face
  • + 1
What rims is Aggy running? Doesn't look like Eastons anymore. Looks like they say raptor on them but can't find them in a google search.
  • + 11
IS NOBODY GOING TO MENTION HOW MANY AIR SHOCKS ARE BEING RAN, PRETTY COOL.

  • - 1
How many bikes besides the new demos are 27.5?
  • + 6
I can now look at my YT Tues and happily know it will take ANYTHING I could ever possibly through at it without even thinking about it Big Grin

Rheeders ride looks absolutely nuts as well love it
  • + 2
I'm guessing most bikes will be toast after this event , at least the ali ones , I doubt many of them will ride the same frame after. A few years back on the Atherton Project Gee's commencal only lasted one run down the hill , he commented on how it couldn't do another run cos it was falling apart.
  • + 2
Way to make him feel good about his bike! Wink
  • + 5
Yannick's bike looks like it has huge bb drop... Rheeder's trek looks really sick, same as aggy's kona. Props for Makken for running single speed! As a dartmoor rider, i'm proud to see Godziek riding Roots on Rampage! Just can't believe my eyes...
  • + 1
I think Yannick's bike is the new 650b thus the huge bb drop.
  • + 1
His front wheel is lower than his rear making it look like it has a larger BB drop than it does.
  • + 2
Yannick has a shorter shock installed then on the original Tues. That's why there is so much bb drop
  • + 9
No love for Doerfling and Buehler with the Knollys?!
  • + 4
 I killed a man with a trident.
  • + 4
I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safe house or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder.
  • + 8
aggy, rheeder, hopkins for nicest bike
  • + 3
 couldnt agree more....nice, clean, simple

Yeah! War is just so exciting...
  • + 6
You know, there are uses for camo other than war, man.
  • + 15
yeah, have you never been to an abercrombie and fitch?
  • + 0
Surprising coming from a person from Switzerland
  • + 0
Toms camo, Brandon and Gully's are my three favourite paintjobs. Not in any particular order. The only bike I don't particularly like is Will White's, but only a little bit. I'm sure it is awesome like the rest of the field. Cannot wait for Sunday. Reckon there's gonna be shitloads of craziness!
  • + 3
I haven't been to abercrombie, nor have I been to fitch. Are they towns where lots of people hide in the bushes?
  • + 0
Except hunting or wildlife photography/observation main application is war. It's even what the pattern has been invented for!
Maybe Semenuk's goal is to give us the illusion he's flying down the hill?

@Bikerguy: What do you mean with Switzerland? Just curious, not offended at all - especially as I'm not from here!
  • + 2
Just given the historical neutrality of Switzerland, I thought it was ironic to be commenting about war
  • + 1
I want to make it clear that it wasn't intended to be taken personally
  • + 0
We're now deviating really a lot from the original topic (bikes) but just two "peaceful" comments Wink and I'm done.
Having an opinion on war is not related to a country being neutral or not. I actually think being neutral is an illusion, or wrong wording. I don't think one can be neutral by deciding to actively ignore or negate a conflict.
Secondly war is sometimes a necessary evil, but one that shouldn't be praised and that was my initial reaction.

Back to bike designs I find the one of Rdawg really really neat.

It wasn't that long ago trek didn't have a proper DH bike. And nobody here even knew Scott made bikes.
  • + 1
Big question is are those session park or session dh?
  • + 1
Session parks - you can see by the alu seatstay and chainstay and they use old fork bumpers. Makken and Hunziker have a 2014 models tho. 26" all of them.
  • + 6
My girlfriend just said "So....is the new Demo kinda like the Lefty?".
  • + 2
good on her for knowing the lefty to start with! haha itll look good together!

Am I the only one who thinks the new demo looks shit?

 yes.

I think it looks shit aswell mate :p

It's still nicer looking than the old one

I think its a beautiful machine - excited to see how it rides at rampage!

Hopefully Norbs keeps this one locked up..

 Few posts up:
Morpheus-Cycles (4 mins ago)
Will White and Mitch Chubey ride for Morpheus but we did not have bikes ready in time from Rampage so we gave them the opportunity to ride whatever they wanted to make sure they are safe for the event
  • + 1
 thats awesome
  • + 1
YT, new Demo and Treks are just beautiful machines. Scott Gamblers have a lot of pivot hardware for a bike that I have never heard anyone rave about. That Rocky Mountain that Gully is rocking appears to be a non-hydroformed throwback to the four bar technology of 2002 - it is a company I want to root for, and I will admit that the bike might ride just fine, but they don't produce any drool-worthy bikes!
  • + 1
for a second, i thought gully rides for someone else. so i guess it the new DH sled from RM eh?
  • + 1
The bike looks completely standard as well.
  • + 2
I would say the RM Altitude is a very drool-worthy bike. But I'm biased because I have a Flatline.
  • + 2
Imagine the payroll that Trek and Scott have.
  • + 5
Why Cam McCaul and Vanderham aren´t riding ?
Where is Doerfling?
  • + 3
notice mitch repolato is running öhlins internals in the boxxer. no rebound nob in the bottom and gold lid on top like seen earlier in the season.
  • + 5
A freeride competition and only one Kona. Times have changed...
  • + 1
Brendog has some pretty fly looking parts. I hope he gets on the podium. It's been a while for him hey, and he deserves it for being such a boss player. Tell thee what, I wouldn't fancy riding down that course on enve rims given their propensity to snap!
  • + 3
Wil's on a frame labeled as a Morpheus, but that sure as hell looks like a Banshee Darkside to me.
  • + 3
Aha - I saw the reply from @Morpheus-Cycles above.
  • + 4
Yo man I'm Kyle J, I love this shit
  • + 3
Kelly McGarry using shred ski goggles, I like him more now he's relateable Big Grin
  • + 1
I wonder if his picture was taken before or after he exploded his bike Lol! Too stoked for this weekend!
  • + 1
And stealth tyres. What are they?
  • + 1
First off the type 2 with the clutch and a narrow wide ring up front is just as good as a chain guide and way more quiet. I have been rocking this combo for some time and it's amazing. Never dropped a chain once.
  • + 20
 And second off?
  • + 4
 Sooooo muuuuch biiiiike porrrrrrn
  • + 3
Sooo many Scott, YT and Trek bikes - those three brands make the half of all bikes at rampage.
  • + 3
Mitch ropo's demo gave me a insta boner better go look at some road bikes
  • + 3
one (two actually) word: YT TEAM....
  • + 4
 Sexy Norco
  • + 1
Yea, speaking of that Norco, is that a new frame design?... Straight top tube and less swoopy down tube, more angled lower seat tube... Looks better than the current Aurum.
  • + 1
Yeah its design changed for 27.5 wheels. Looks very cool.
  • + 2
Only 1 bike running Enve!! Am I reading too much into it, or does that mean there is little confidence when things get big
  • + 2
So Norbs and Mitch get the new Carbon Demo, but Rogatkin is still on last years model (and paint scheme?)
  • + 0
I think he is on the new 650b aluminium 2015 bike
  • + 1
I don't believe Rogatkin is on a full factory ride, he really just blew into the sport and was probably just on some sort of low level sponsorship with just production bikes. I'm sure he will get the good stuff next year.
  • + 1
It's interesting to see all triple crown forks, as I'm pretty sure some of the guys ran single crown in past years? So no tail whips and barspins this year Frown
  • + 4
 No Karpiel this year? :/
  • - 1
Hahahhaha how is that even an option
  • + 2
would be interesting to know what wheelsizes they are running for this event.
  • + 3
I count 10 out of the 34 bikes on 650b wheels.
  • + 1
Lots of YT's. Treks and Gamblers this year. No one is running a single crown this year cause the course is so nuts!
  • + 2
Geoff's new Flatline looks the business.
  • + 1
I have no preference of Man or machine for this event, they're all awesome, just can't wait to watch it.
  • + 1
is anyone running 650b ? brendog looks like hes 26 on his gambler , the tire clerance looks big

It's good to see Wil White with some sponsors
  • + 2
 Brandon's bike is awesome

Fairclough and vink is the only one with the new gambler design? Wonder why most are using the older frame?

carbon demos, pivot, one trek, brendon's. I counted 10 out of 34 but not 100% sure
  • + 1
 And only one running Enve!
  • + 1
norbs looks like a saint with the light behind him haha!! Hopkins Norco is the sweetest ride!!
  • + 2
This is what we've been waiting for!
  • + 1
Why are some riders running larger rear wheels? (i.e YANNICK GRANIERI)? (or am i just looking at it funny?)
  • + 1
Bigger wheels roll better over the rough section thus giving you the extra speed to clear those massive jumps/drops. I think Yannick is on the new 650b YT.
  • + 1
No single crown forks this year?
it seemed pretty crazy anyways...
  • + 1
I'm curious to see what the pit bike pulls off the gopro step down.
  • + 1
will white using the new dt swiss rebar spokes, eh? shiza.
  • + 1
 Norbs looking like god...
  • + 1
Will White got an upgrade Smile

Aggy's Kona is so dope. Cant beat all black.
  • + 1
So, it's Scott vs Trek this year.
  • + 0
Wish Giant would pull their head out of their ass and start sponsoring some people.
  • + 1
They got Sorge, but he got injured before rampage.
  • + 1
The bikes are great but who's rims will win?
  • + 1
What bike is rheeder running? That's thing is sick!
  • + 1
 That's a session dude?
  • + 1
Is yannick granieri running a shorter shock than normal on the yt?
  • + 1

  • + 1
No the others ride for Scott Wink
  • + 1
R-dog always has the coolest looking bikes in my opinion!
  • + 1
This is the real shit bro Red Bull.
  • + 2
 Where's Doerfling

Looking at the rear suspension on those Scott bikes makes my head hurt.
  • + 1
Where's the single crowns shredders this year
  • + 1
Look like a Trek Session ... armada. Sorry, it's legit this time.
  • + 2
RDawg session looks like ... a race car. Nice paint.

 go MCGARRY!
  • + 2
 Trek out all the bikes
  • + 2
 Scott me surprised
  • + 2
 What's Gully riding?
  • + 2
Appears to be a bike from a land and time before machining, hydroforming and carbon. A high-pivot, four bar suspension like bikes from 2002...and Mike Levy is arguing that innovation is dead? Wink
  • + 1
 I'm pretty sure that's aluminum.
  • + 1
It is...machining and hydroforming are metal technologies. I was just joking around, I would guess that it is a geometry prototype and not a production rig. Either way, it is a throwback suspension design.
  • + 1
this is new dh frame from RM but I dont remember name
  • + 1
Its a prototype so it is super rough just to get a rideable geometry. They will make it look sexy once the angles are decided on. Part of the R&D process.
  • + 1
So if that rocky has throwback design, trek does too? Count the pivots... doesn't look so different from driveside...
  • + 0
If you could have one bike..... Cam zink
  • + 1
 Great article Beer
  • + 0
Gully on the proto Rocky DH bike. Looks nice.

 27,5 for freeride ! YEAAH
  • + 2
Significant number of them this year whereas the past two years it was only Logan Binggeli (who proved you can at least still pull back flips over and over with 650Bs).
  • + 2
Eh? As in 3,4,5 out of 40 is now significant?
  • + 1
 I count 10 out of 34.
  • + 1
 Prototype pivot?
  • + 1
 damn.. trek and scott
  • + 1
 Andreu bike is so rad
  • + 1
 #teamYT
  • + 1
 Doerfling?!
  • + 1
 What is that morpheus?
  • + 4
I think that's actually a banshee darkside that was rebadged
  • + 3
 A banshee darkside
  • + 4
It's not. That is a Banshee Darkside. Morpheus stated that they were unable to get Wills bike ready for Rampage so they gave them free reign to pick up any frame they wanted so they could safely ride the contest. Pretty rad of them to do that if you ask me.
  • + 2
 Banshee Darkside Big Grin
  • + 3
I noticed that is what it looks like. The morpheus team in one of my local races were riding stickered up giant glorys because they dont like the morpheus carbon proto.
  • - 2
New SWORKS carbon Demos are the hottest of the bunch (at least top 3). Haters gonna hate though...
  • - 2
ROCK SHOX seems to be the choice for the front. Id take a Rock Shox any day over FOX!
  • + 1
Uhm cause most of the guys are Sram sponsored?
  • + 0
Or Fox is more of a fashion statement than performance. Also their OVERPRICED service parts and CUSTOMER SERVICE BLOW!
  • + 0
 Where is Brendan Howey?
  • - 2
even its not visible here, vink's bike is awesome too....
  • + 1
Yeah, and why is only Brendan riding the new frame?
  • - 2
