Caroline Washam's Liv Racing DH Bike

photo

Caroline Washam is carrying over a lot of her set up from last year into this year. After some time off the bike with a shoulder injury after the Snowshoe World Cup, she's had plenty of time to recover and is ready for the season to get underway.
Rider Name Caroline Washam // Liv Racing
Instagram: @caroline.washam
Her bike is a Giant Glory frame custom painted by Liv with the same paint that Liv's enduro athletes are racing this year and is outfitted with SRAM and RockShox componentry and Industry Nine wheels.

At 5'5" tall and 150 lbs, she's on a size Medium frame and is using a 350 lb. spring on the RockShox shock. Her Boxxer fork has 109 psi, no tokens, and one click of compression damping. She's also running Flat Tire Defender inserts and Joe's sealant, keeping things nicely sealed up through the rocks.

Dakotah Norton's Devinci Wilson 29

photo

Knoxville local Dakotah Norton is coming into the season strong, taking the win at Windrock this weekend in dominating fashion after putting down some impressive results last season, including an 8th place at World Champs.
Rider Name Dakotah Norton // Unior Devinci Factory Racing
Instagram: @daknorton

He's rolling into his third season with Devinci's factory team. This year, the team has swapped over to Fox for suspension and then Shimano drivetrains, marking a significant change from the other S brand.

Dakotah is a set and forget kind of rider and is still running a very similar set up to when he first joined the Devinci team back in 2018. At 5'11", he runs a large frame with a +7mm headset to get the fit just right. On his tyres he's running 23psi in the front and 28psi in the rear with Cushcore inserts both ends. He told us his spoke tension on those wheels is 'about to fold'.

photo
Dakotah runs 260psi in his Fox Float X2...

photo
...And 100 in his fork. Those bars are 780mm wide with a 35mm rise.

Rachel Pageau's Pivot Phoenix 29

photo

Canadian Rachel Pageau has made a steady track upward toward the DH world, coming from XC racing, then to enduro. She's made her home in the Southeast, attending Brevard College and getting plenty of training time in at Windrock.
Rider Name Rachel Pageau // Pivot Cycles USA
Instagram: @shellpageau
She's been back in Canada up until the last couple of weeks due to COVID restrictions but was able to get back to warmer weather and good riding recently.

She's 5' 2" tall and racing on Pivot's Phoenix 29 DH bike. At 112 lbs, she runs 62 psi in the Fox fork and then 155 psi in the Fox Float X2 in the rear. The bike is rounded out with some color-matched Nox carbon hoops and a RaceFace / Shimano Saint drivetrain

On the Green Giant - a Mary in soft on the front and an ultrasoft on the rear - could someone explain this weird combo to me????? Maybe a preference to front wheel breaking away?
  • 22 2
 What maniac has that preference?
  • 19 3
@Mayzei: A sponsored rider that gets tires for free?
  • 11 0
Yeah that's surprising to me too. Must be something that works well for her. I run the ultra soft up front and the bike park edition in the rear for that super grip in the front and wear resistance out back. Works so well.
  • 2 1
 Sponsorship has its privileges
  • 1 1
Getting on the front brake really effin hard
  • 5 5
The off road grip is better on the ultra soft so it is a better tire on tree roots. at 150 lbs she is running tire inserts so she is likely running a bit lower than standard pressure to ensure there is no sliding on roots and the fine dust on the rocks. She might be running the slightly more durable tire up front, instead of matching the ultra soft in the rear, as I would rather have a potential blow out in the rear than in the front for control purposes.

I imagine with this set up she burns through rear tires quickly but if you get them for free you end up taking the best possible performance option rather than the longest lasting.

Another possibility: She only had an ultra soft tire left and had to replace here rear tire. LOL

Offroad motorcycles typically have this combo. The front is harder compound and run at higher pressure. For me, it keeps the front casing from folding during cornering and allows the front knobs to dig into the terrain rather than fold and squirm. "Super sticky" or "gummy" rear tires have become very popular. Of course, there's a bunch of other factors at play (system weight, tire sizes, speed) but I can certainly see how this may apply in a DH setting where there's more weight on the front and speeds/loads are higher.
  • 13 0
Races are won and lost on the climbs.
  • 6 0
@vjunior21: There's no reason not to run the softest compound up front, that is why OP is asking the question.
  • 6 0
I found some soft compounds up front 'squirm' too much, especial with tall aggressive knobs - could be that's why
  • 66 0
To end the debate: I got a nail in my Ultra Soft front tire and just swapped front wheels which already had a Soft.
  • 3 0
@InTheLoo: ye but motos have engines , n a lot more power through the rear wheel Smile
  • 1 1
that's how it's supposed to be since it's easier to control a rear wheel sliding versus the front
  • 20 0
@SpokedLLC: Boooo, this thread of speculation could have gone on for days!
  • 6 0
@dingus: Right?! Why ruin the day for us speculative bike nerd trolls? Now I have to go find something productive to do...
  • 2 5
My thought is the soft magic mary only comes in supergravity, whereas as the ultra soft comes in dh casing as well. So while the compounds make no sense, the casings do (beefier rear, lighter front). And maybe she'd prefer a soft dh casing rear for better rolling resistance.

Also @seismicninja I run the same combo and its amazing
  • 1 0
Maybe she naturally overloads the front and so wants to avoid losing the back too much.
  • 1 1
Thats a red logo, not orange Red seems to be a new compound
  • 2 0
@sundawn: lol she explained what happened in a comment above. Just look for the one with lots of upvotes
  • 1 0
 @seismicninja: oh ok

i just hoped there will be a new compound soon ;-)

I love that Devinci found a design that they and their fans liked, and kept with it for years.

@bman33: ah checks out, surprised more companies dont invest in a wrap for the team bikes like that

  • 5 0
another candidate for story of the race: Isak racing his homemade bike to 3rd.
  • 1 0
 @shredddr: agreed. Very cool!
  • 4 0
Honest question, can someone give me the low down on why the WC riders tend to run low spoke tension? I guess as sort of extra suspension or lateral deflection, but run a stiff rim to keep it tracking straight and things in shape? Obviously at expensive of the longevity of the wheel but I'd like to know.
  • 8 0
 Because they get free wheels
  • 2 0
@kookseverywhere: yeah I get that, I'm asking what the performance benefit actually is, regardless of cost.
  • 13 0
@BrigadierBuege: Free traction. An overly stiff wheel bounces off of roots and rocks, whereas a looser wheel tracks through and finds grip. Same reason you want tires to be soft enough to grip. World Cup mechanics will add spoke tension for high speed/hardpacked/ high impact courses like Leogang, and take out spoke tension for slippery, loose, off-camber, or slower tracks like Lenzerheide. That stuff never shows up in bike checks, so it's cool that Dakota mentioned it. Apparently Nico Voilliouz was a psycho about tuning spoke tension for a specific track.
  • 5 0
@TEAM-ROBOT: Thank you for explaining. That's pretty much what I thought but wanted to be sure. I follow WC close enough that this isn't the first time I've heard it, apparently Troy Brosnan also runs some pretty loose spoke tension on some tracks. Also I recall seeing some WC mechanics tie the spokes together where they cross, I guess to add some sort of rigidity in the middle of the wheel to a loose set of spokes and keep them from getting too out of shape. I like all the small details, it's something to learn from I agree.
  • 5 0
@BrigadierBuege: Kirt Vories told me "Wheels that are losing tension feel better and better, right up until the moment they blow up." It also helps explain why world cup guys still get flats and blow up wheels, despite the best tech in the world. They will run stuff as soft or as loose as they can get away with, but it's a gamble. When you gamble, you get bit sometimes. Super interesting stuff.
  • 1 0
@TEAM-ROBOT: Yeah, for sure. I think the quote from Troy I was thinking of was he said if the wheel is still rideable by the end of the run, the spokes were too tight. F1 mentality right there
  • 1 0
@BrigadierBuege: That's a cool quote, I hadn't heard that. That's a lot of trust needed between rider and mechanic.
  • 9 3
I can't image riding a 29er DH rig @ 5'2" - must be all legs and really good at staying centered
  • 8 3
That is crazy. The definition of being a passenger on the bike. Kudos if it works for her but I think a mullet would be the way to go.
  • 2 3
@NotSorry: Just take a look at that front-center length compared to the rear! She's automatically so far forward in the bike compared to the guys, because the chainstays just cannot go any shorter. Like you said, kudos if it works, but the entire industry has been moving towards longer front ends and allowing a more neutral front-rear position instead of hanging off the back, but short riders on 29ers are going to end up sliding towards back because the fronts are relatively too short.
  • 2 0
 @NotSorry: Mullet...yep, 27&26
  • 2 0
 @pinkknip: Haha, yeah possibly!
  • 5 0
No mention of the custom cable routing on Dak's bike? Half of the built-in guides are empty and there are holes drilled into the shock-mount butresses.

@dexterfawkes remember, act you're another race other than white. Then they think you're funny. #triggered

Or maybe act like it's an obscure Michael Scott quote. From this point forward, everything is offensive because you probably had something to do with that whole redlining thing and since you got a head start in this race called life, you should not take advantage of it and sprint your ass off to keep ahead. You should wait to be ran over and trampled by everyone wanting to catch up. Then...you and all your dreams will be swallowed up as you're forced to hand over your bike that you worked so hard for...from your vantage point of privilige...so you can be "equal".

Then...we'll divide up all the rice and corn and grain and milk equally among all the citizens that the government deems fit whilst we all go to equal paying jobs and labor for the greater dominance of the overlords of all...one dude with all the oil and weapons and armies.

@dexterfawkes: Bro, systemic and institutional racism is no joke. It defines the livelihood millions of people and makes it unequal, especially in the US. Based on what? what shade of skin you are born in. That is mental, and it only exists becouse a small group of white rich usually men decided it so they could amass more power for themselves and less for everyone else.
I know i will not change the way you think, but maybe read a little or even watch some comedians like Dave Chappelle or George Carlin so that you can begin to understand what all the fuzz is about.
Be part of the solution, not the problem.

@blowmyfuse: Here in Mexico racism is deep in the roots of our culture
When the spanish conquered, they instituted the system (shool, art, knowledge) so that the indigenous population was racially antagonized and their culture abolished. But the fight right now is not in mexico, its in the US and my young internet clickbait 13 year old brain makes me want to express my ideals through this pinkbike thread in order to aid the change.
My genealogical roots come from Mexico and Spain.

@alex-morales: Kid...you don't even know the facts about your own country. Bet you didn't know you have a massive racial divide. Here you go...read, study, report back.

I'll give you just 1 study, then you do the research. Then...go work with your neighbors to make a better world where you live and keep your fingers off my prostate.

"The data paints a much less rosy picture. Race, it turns out, has a greater impact on a
Mexican’s human development and capital accumulation than any other demographic
variable. Our results show that Mexico’s “skin-color gap” is two times the achievement gap
documented between northern and southern Mexicans, which is an inequality more often
cited in Mexico.
It is also five times greater thanthe urban-rural divide reported in the poll. We even found
that skin color has a significantly greater impact on wealth and education than does ethnicity
– that is, indigenous versus white or mixed-race Mexican."
www.vanderbilt.edu/lapop/news/121317.mexico-theconversation.pdf

I'm going to show you that one article, but you can find plenty.

Folks, there are bad people in this world. There are good. People hang out with people who look like them because it's quick and easy to look up, spot a similar face...and go. Models gang up, nerds do, hillbillies do, bloggers do (in group chats), tall people even hook up and hang. Frat boys, etc.

The entire human race just stands next to somebody they mirror.

When bad stuff happens to good people, it's the action of the person, not the society. Sure, hate based on visuals can be taught, but the seed has to be there. I've never programmed anyone to hate in my family. Some of us just have it in us.

Treat others with respect regardless of visual cues. But NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR BEING IN RACE OF SURVIVAL and keeping your head above water. If you're holding your kids on your shoulders to keep them from drowning, you don't reach out and pull someone else up and risk your children drowning in a sea of humanity.

@alex-morales: No you insulting little jerk. You jumped up and accused an American of being a racist and then you threw our whole country under the bus. You don't speak for my country no more than I do for yours.

You don't live here and you don't swing the broad stroke of a racist brush over the users of the Pinkbike community like we are some ill informed and poisoned society just because of the flag logo next to their name.

When I speak about other countries, I do it in TWO WAYS:

1. Factually based on the easy stuff like "China is a communist country stripping it's natural resources to push it forward as a world power." That's no guess work. They are doing that. I'm not throwing a citizen, community or town under the bus.
I make no mention of racism there, death squads, cultural differences, or their view of the world because I DON'T KNOW THEM!!!

2. 2.Satirically (sarcasm) - I would make offensive statements or silly assumptions as layers of either simple or complex jokes about basic Asian stereotypes that could offend any and/or every person in every country that may or may not be Asian. Punchlines, jokes...obvious stereotypes that everyone "assumes" but are only humor. Humor of ANY kind can offend, inspire or make a crowd laugh. It's up to the recipient. It is a form of Freedom of Speech. We have that right in the US.
Perhaps you should watch all the young black people facing off and insulting the living crap out of one another using stereotypes, race, region & faith and dying laughing on the wonderful "Dad Jokes" youtube channnel. Jokes aren't terribly universal. They offend each other.

So don't jump in the face of an American mountain biker making what is OBVIOUSLY a satirical joke that everyone can CHOOSE to laugh at or be offended by. Let him say it and move on. Look inward.

David Cross said it best: "I don't come down to where you work and slap the..."

  • 1 0
@Ajorda: i don't think any bike manufacturers grind down their welds. that would probably add another $500 to the cost of a frame with the time involved to that on a mass scale. i'm sure the welds are strong, but they are out of line and thick then thin..
  • 1 0
@novajustin: Some companies do grind the welds, like trek on their emonda alr road bikes. Cambodian labour is cheap, those bikes are not very expensive. Other companies will do a second pass without adding filler material just to smooth the weld and improve appearance. I'm sure the welds are strong and passed QC, even if they're not the prettiest, and that's all that counts in the end.
